Apple, Tesla Ask California To Change Its Proposed...

Tesla and Apple have asked the state of California to change its proposed policies on self-driving cars to allow companies to test vehicles without traditional steering wheels and controls or human back-up drivers, among other things. Reuters reports: In a letter made public Friday, Apple made a series of suggested changes to the policy that is under development and said it looks forward to working with California and others "so that rapid technology development may be realized while ensuring the safety of the traveling public." Waymo, the self-driving car unit of Google parent company Alphabet Inc, Ford Motor Co, Uber Technologies Inc, Toyota Motor Corp, Tesla Motors Inc and others also filed comments suggesting changes. Apple said California should revise how companies report self-driving system "disengagements." California currently requires companies to report how many times the self-driving system was deactivated and control handed back to humans because of a system failure or...

Stealthy Mac malware spies on encrypted browser...

A new malware program that targets macOS users is capable of spying on encrypted browser traffic to steal sensitive information.

The new program, dubbed OSX/Dok by researchers from Check Point Software Technologies, was distributed via email phishing campaigns to users in Europe.

One of the rogue emails was crafted to look as if it was sent by a Swiss government agency warning recipients about apparent errors in their tax returns. The malware was attached to the email as a file called Dokument.zip.

What makes OSX/Dok interesting is that it was digitally signed with a valid Apple developer certificate. These certificates are issued by Apple to members of its developer program and are needed to publish applications in the official Mac App Store.

Legal war with Apple hits Qualcomm's revenue...

The legal fight between Apple and Qualcomm on licensing modem technology is turning uglier every day.

Apple has filed lawsuits against Qualcomm in countries like the U.S., U.K., China, and Japan, accusing the chipmaker of using its dominant market position to overcharge licensing fees.

The iPhone maker itself doesn't pay licensing fees directly to Qualcomm. The fees are paid by partners like Foxconn, which makes the iPhone and iPad for Apple.

Qualcomm is now accusing Apple of interfering with the licensing payments owed by those partners. Its revenue forecasts for the third quarter are affected, Qualcomm said.

The chipmaker on Friday revised its revenue projections for the third fiscal quarter. It is projecting revenue to be between $5.3 billion and $6.1 billion. That range runs between a decrease of 12 percent and an increase of 1 percent, compared to the same quarter last year. The forecast removes royalty revenues from Apple's contract manufacturers...

Qualcomm Says Apple To Stop Paying Royalties

San Diego, California-based Qualcomm also slashed its profit and revenue forecasts for the current quarter, to account for the lost royalty revenue.

That didn't take long. About two weeks after Apple gained permission from the State of California to test out its Project Titan autonomous-car technology, an "anonymous source" provided Bloomberg with pictures and an animated GIF sequence showing the vehicle on the streets.

iCloud.com gains dynamic wallpaper

Do the Bokeh Pokeh: The iCloud.com login screen

OK, so this isn't big news, but it's actually quite interesting. iCloud.com, which has displayed a static, blue-to-yellow gradient background for the past three years, now has a dynamic wallpaper on both the login and "home" screens.

The backdrop features what I'd refer to as "floating bokeh," referring to the blurred, out of focus patches of light seen in the background of photos that are focused on a foreground object. Those blobs of light actually react to where the mouse pointer appears on the screen, changing direction to head towards the pointer.

Go try it out. You know you want to...

∞ AirPods, song skipping, and volume

I love my AirPods. I am happy with the sound quality and I love the convenience and the cleverness of the design. Clearly, a tremendous amount of thought has been put into the many and varied use AirPod use cases:

  • Open the case near your iPhone and you are connected automatically.
  • Pull an AirPod out of your ear and the music or video you are playing pauses.
  • Drop the AirPods back in the case and they charge automatically.
  • Double-tap to interact with Siri.

There are two use cases, however, that just don’t work for me.

  • Skip to the next song (something I do reasonably often)
  • Adjust the volume (either due to a song being mixed loud, or my circumstances/environment changing)

In either case, you either need to pull your phone out of your pocket, fire up an Apple Watch app, or you need to ask Siri to help. While these are all fine solutions, they are far less efficient than the solutions I’ve long had...

Apple Music + Musical.ly = Love

Musical.ly

Musical.ly is a fun music video app that lets users create their own music videos, then share them with others. Re/Code reports that the app, which now uses song snippets from UK-based provider 7digital, will start using Apple Music content in addition to that from 7digital beginning this weekend.

The deal is a win-win for both Apple and Musical.ly: Apple gets to promote Apple Music through the Musical.ly app, while Musical.ly will be expanding from 30 countries to 120 thanks to the depth of licensing deals Apple has.

Musical.ly has been in service for almost three years and is just now becoming extremely popular with teenagers. If Apple can attract part of that teen crowd to Apple Music, its subscription service may see an increase in...

Apple to hold Q2 2017 conference call on Tuesday,...

Come next Tuesday, Apple shall once again reveal where it stands where units of currency are concerned.

Apple will hold its Q2 conference call on Tuesday, May 2nd in the early afternoon at 2 PM PST.

Last quarter, Apple’s revenues shrunk for the first time in recent memory. At the time, Apple suggested that its next quarter would generate between $51.5 and $53.5 billion in revenue, which would make it a second straight quarter of slight year-over-year revenue growth.

During the conference call, some things to watch out for will include iPhone sales, Apple’s growth in the Chinese marketplace, what revenues Apple’s services are generating and a general idea as to how the Apple Watch is selling (even if Apple has yet to release specific sales numbers).

Users will also see how Mac sales are doing and if they’ll continue to trend upwards and whether the iPad turnaround has begun following the introduction of a stripped-down $329 model and the updated iPad...

Lexus RX450s SUV spotted using Apple’s self-driving...

Less than two weeks after snagging permission to test it test its autonomous-car technology in California, Apple appears to be testing its software on California’s public roads.

A white Lexus RX450h SUV was seen emerging from an Apple facility, complete with a battery of attached sensors. The sensors included Velodyne Lidar Inc.’s top-of-the-range 64-channel lidar, at least two radar and a series of cameras. The sensors appear to be products bought off the shelf from suppliers, rather than custom-made, according to an industry expert who saw the photos.

An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles cleared Apple to test its software with three vehicles earlier this month. Apple’s “Project Titan”, as it’s been internally dubbed, seems to be an autonomous car project headed up by Apple veteran executive Bob Mansfield. Mansfield took over leadership of the project in 2016 and is said to have reined in the “Apple Car”...

Duty Calls Popular Shooter Back to World War II

Call of Duty will return to its World War II roots when the latest title arrives this November. The franchise has been a steady hit maker since its 2003 debut. Various titles in the series have become regular staples in e-sports tournaments and Major League Gaming. Call of Duty is one of the most popular series in video game history, selling a combined 175 million copies -- second only to Take 2's Grand Theft Auto franchise. The game has passed $11 billion in total lifetime revenue.

Here’s how Apple could easily solve its Touch ID ‘...

I’ve been giving more thought to the issue of how Apple might embed Touch ID into the display of the iPhone 8. So far, the various reports and rumors have focused on two possibilities: one hi-tech, one low-tech.

The hi-tech approach would be to embed a fingerprint reader beneath the display. We know from the sheer volume of Apple patents that Apple ...

External Link: FCC Chairman Pai Seeks to Reverse Net...

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has released a 58-page plan that would reverse most of the Obama-era net neutrality rules, most notably one that classifies ISPs as common carriers. His proposed rules will face an initial vote on 18 May 2017, and the FCC is hearing comments until then. Last time the FCC sought public comment on net neutrality, it was flooded with 3.7 million submissions in favor of requiring broadband providers to treat all traffic equally, rather than selling preferential “fast lane” access to the highest bidders. Any bets on how many comments the FCC gets this time?

Apple Patent Hints At Wirelessly Charging Your...

According to AppleInsider, "Apple is experimenting with medium- to long-distance wireless charging technologies that could one day allow users to charge up their iPhones with nothing more than a Wi-Fi router." From the report: Detailed in Apple's patent application for "Wireless Charging and Communications Systems With Dual-Frequency Patch Antennas" is a method for transferring power to electronic devices over frequencies normally dedicated to data communications. In its various embodiments, the invention notes power transfer capabilities over any suitable wireless communications link, including cellular between 700 MHz and 2700 MHz, and Wi-Fi operating at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. More specifically, the document's claims apply to millimeter wave 802.11ad spectrum channels currently in use by the WiGig standard, which operates over the 60 GHz frequency band. Theoretically, the proposal opens the door to wire-free charging from in-home Wi-Fi routers to cellular nodes and even satellite...

Why peer-to-peer Apple Pay is a great idea

Even in 2017, paying for things is still mostly terrible—even more so now that a multitude of options seem to confront us every time we step up to a register: Do I swipe? Insert my card? Enter a PIN? Sign my name?

When Apple Pay launched in 2014, it came with the promise of reducing much of that complexity. Just tap your phone or Apple Watch to the reader and you’re done. That hasn’t exactly panned out, thanks to both the fragmentation of payment methods and less-than-universal adoption of Apple Pay.

Still, given the inroads that Apple has made in paying businesses, it’s somewhat surprising that the company hasn’t yet jumped headfirst into person-to-person payments. However, if a report in Recode this week is any indication, Apple may be eyeing just such a move. And the benefits for its users could be tremendous.

Apple updates iCloud.com wallpaper from static...

Apple likes rolling out changes to iCloud.com at seemingly random times throughout the year. Today, it’s updated the iCloud.com background from a static blue-yellow seaside gradient to a moving animation that tracks your mouse cursor and mimics the blue Dynamic Wallpaper on iPhone and iPad, which Apple quickly ignored after their introduction in iOS 7.

Purported iPhone 8 clear case lacks rear Touch ID...

The latest iPhone 8 leak is an image of a purported case for the device, via KKSneakLeaks. This (admittedly) bare bones clear case gives some clues as to the device’s characteristics by the shape and cutouts in the accessory. Most prominently, the case includes a camera cutout that would snugly fit the vertically-stacked dual camera that we have seen so much in recent weeks.

It also has a noticeably longer power button and notably lacks any hole for a rear Touch ID sensor to reside. This again supports the idea that Apple will successfully integrate the fingerprint scanner into the display, rather than an earlier leak which placed the sensor below the Apple logo on the back. The general proportions of the part also confirms that the physical size of the device is...
