Apple: some iCloud users get erroneous message about...

On Jan. 10, it was reported that Apple will hand its China cloud operations over to a state-owned partner Guizhou-Cloud Big Data Industry Co. (GCBD) on Feb. 28. This was only meant to affect customers in mainland China, some users outside of China also received an email telling them their data was affected and being given to GCBD.

As reported by TechCrunch,  Apple now says that some customers received that message in error. The tech giant has informed users that these emails were sent in error, reiterating that only users with their Apple ID country set to China will have their iCloud data migrated to GCBD servers.

China law requires companies to store customer data collected in the region locally. With the handover, photos, documents and messages uploaded by Apple users throughout the country will be stored...

Apple's China iCloud Data Migration Sweeps Up...

Yesterday, it was reported that Apple's iCloud services in mainland China will be operated by a Chinese company from next month. What wasn't reported was the fact that Apple has included iCloud accounts that were opened in the U.S., are paid for using U.S. dollars and/or are connected to U.S.-based App Store accounts in the data that will be handled by local partner Guizhou-Cloud Big Data (GCBD) from February 28. TechCrunch reports: Apple has given China-based users the option to delete their data, but there is no opt out that allows them to have it stored elsewhere. That has concerned some users who are uneasy that the data migration is a sign of closer ties with the Chinese government, particularly since GCBD is owned by the Guizhou provincial government. When asked for comment, Apple pointed TechCrunch to its terms and conditions site which explains that it is migrating iCloud accounts based on their location: "The operation of iCloud services associated with Apple IDs that have...

CES – RhinoShield Shows off “Mod” Modular iPhone Case

LAS VEGAS – At CES this week, RhinoShield, makers of thin-yet-strong iPhone cases, was showing off their new “Mod” modular case. In each configuration we tested the case was strong and felt cohesive. Holding my phone with the bumper+backplate on it felt like I had one, solid case on my phone. With 11 feet of drop protection, this makes sense! Priced at US$34.99 (or $31.99 plus shipping on Amazon), you can choose different colors and patterns for both pieces of the case. And if you want to change your style, just buy a new backplate and pop it in! RhinoShield mod comes in sizes ranging from iPhone 5 to iPhone X, with everything in between,...

CES – Netgear adds Waterproof Orbi Outdoor Satellite...

LAS VEGAS – Netgear’s Orbi is one of our favorite wireless mesh systems available, and they’ve been doing a lot to update it over the past few months (see our “How to Choose Mesh Wireless” article for more details). The most recent update came at CES in the form of new hardware: the weather-resistant, AC3000, RBS50Y Orbi Outdoor Satellite. The only product that can be paired with both the consumer-grade Orbi and pro-grade Orbi Pro, the RBS50Y is a fully sealed, outdoor mesh point that can be added to an existing Orbi system. Just plug in power and go. Netgear wisely chose not to add Ethernet ports to it for security reasons – an outdoor access point gives people easy (and perhaps unwatched) ability to plug in. The Orbi RBS50Y is available immediately and...

As we discussed when we reviewed Fiio's X3 MkIII, using a digital audio player can be a significant lifestyle choice. In an age of convenient streaming music services and Bluetooth headphones, using a discrete music player that requires you to not only maintain a music library but also manage its files manually requires commitment. If you've jumped into the DAP life with one of Fiio's players, the company has a niche-but-useful accessory for you: the K5 desktop amplifier. For $109, users of Fiio DAPs can instantly integrate their device into a desktop system; it's not for everybody, but it delivers on its promises. {/exp:char_limit}

PC Market Still Showing Few Signs of Life

An anonymous reader writes: It was another rough quarter for the global PC market, as fourth quarter unit sales dropped 2%, according to preliminary results from Gartner. In the U.S. things were even bleaker, with sales down 8%. HP was the only big name maker to post a sales increase in the U.S. and globally. It also passed Lenovo to grab the top spot globally and increased its lead in the U.S. over Dell. Apple saw Mac sales globally up 1.4%, but in the U.S. sales were down 1.6%. Dell gained less than 1% globally but fell more than 12% in the U.S.
Lenovo sales dipped slightly globally, but its market share increased slightly, to 22% of the worldwide market.

When Beam announced its app-controlled OLED smart button last month, it struck me as a fun – if relatively pricy – idea.

What you get is a modern-day take on a button which you can wear on clothing or attach to a bag. Instead of a fixed message on metal, you get a 400×400 pixel AMOLED screen on which you can display anything you like …

Apple met with AR component suppliers during CES

During this week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), representatives Apple, Facebook, and Google met with suppliers “that make the nuts and bolts required to power AR glasses,” according to Bloomberg, quoting unnamed sources.

All eyes are on Apple, which considers AR as potentially revolutionary as the smartphone, the article adds. “Put simply, we believe AR is going to change the way we use technology forever,” CEO Tim Cook said in a recent earnings call. Apple aims to have technology ready by the end of 2019, Bloomberg claims.

Apple is more interested in AR than virtual reality (VR), because the former connects people whereas the latter is often an isolating experience involving a headset that renders the user blind to the real world.

Apple has applied for multiple patents regarding AR and scooped up some AR-related...
