Review: Microsoft Surface Precision Mouse – Thinking...

I have never been particularly fond of any of Apple’s mice. I appreciate the company’s dedication to simplicity when it comes to their products, but for my uses which include design and gaming, Apple focuses entirely too much on form over functionality.

As someone who frequently has multiple apps running at the same time, I find Mission Control (formerly Exposé) to be one of my favorite and one of the most useful features of macOS, and I like to use a third-party mouse that has extra buttons with my Mac so that I can program them for Mission Control’s window commands (specifically, Mission Control, Application Windows, and Show Desktop).

This makes switching between Photoshop documents or getting to a file on my desktop as simple as a mouse click. That’s why I decided to go against the grain, so to speak, and try the Microsoft Surface Precision Mouse. ...

Apple has issued a fix to a vulnerability that allowed unauthorized control of accessories, including smart locks and garage door openers. "Our understanding is Apple has rolled out a server-side fix that now prevents unauthorized access from occurring while limiting some functionality, and an update to iOS 11.2 coming next week will restore that full functionality," reports 9to5Mac. From the report: The vulnerability, which we won't describe in detail and was difficult to reproduce, allowed unauthorized control of HomeKit-connected accessories including smart lights, thermostats, and plugs. The most serious ramification of this vulnerability prior to the fix is unauthorized remote control of smart locks and connected garage door openers, the former of which was demonstrated to 9to5Mac. The issue was not with smart home products individually but instead with the HomeKit framework itself that connects products from various companies. The vulnerability required at least one iPhone or...

Rumor: Apple to acquire the Shazam music recognition...

Apple is close to scooping up the popular music recognition app, Shazam, according to TechCrunch, quoting unnamed sources. It’s used by more than 100 million people each month to identify music, get song lyrics, more.

Apple and Shazam would be a great match. Shazam is one of the world’s most popular apps. One source describes the deal to TechCrunch as in the nine figures; another puts it at around $401 million.

Shazam launched in 1999. Last year it noted that it passed one billion downloads.

Since iOS 8, Shazam has been integrated into Siri; it powers the ability to let Apple’s personal digital assistant songs that are playing aloud. Also, Shazam is integrated with Apple Music; subscribers who Shazam a song can then tap to play it directly in Apple Music and can add it to a Shazam playlist.

Apple Is Reportedly Buying Shazam For Nearly Half a...

Apple is close to acquiring Shazam, one of the most recognized services for music recognition. While the exact amount is unknown, the service may be purchased by Apple for around $400 million. PhoneDog reports: Apple is close to acquiring Shazam, say sources speaking to TechCrunch. The deal will reportedly be signed this week and could be announced as early as next Monday. A report from Recode echoes the news of Apple acquiring Shazam, adding that Shazam will likely be valued at around $400 million. Apple -- and other companies -- already offer a music recognition service, but Apple must see something in Shazam's services that it thinks can help improve its own music recognition if it's going to drop nearly half a billion dollars on this deal. Shazam is able to identify TV shows, films, and advertisements in addition to music, so perhaps Apple sees some benefit to these abilities, too.

Review: GearMo 75W USB-C Car Charger lets you charge...

Times change. Back when I was doing a lot of Mac consulting, I bought an inverter for my car so that I could convert the 12V power in the vehicle to 120V AC to charge my MacBook Air between appointments. It was bulky, hot, and slow. Fast-forward to 2017, when a tiny box from GearMo ($22.95 from Amazon, Model GM-UCPDCARB) can provide 60W of USB Type-C power to my MacBook Pro and charge one other device through another USB-A port that uses Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 protocol.

This charger was released on 10/1/17 to provide a total of 75W of charging power. As noted above, the USB-C connector can pump 60W to your MacBook or MacBook Pro to charge it up fast, while the other port can either provide 15W at 3A, or use Qualcomm's QC 3.0 at 12V/1.5A, 9V/2A or 5V/2.4A.

TrueDepth, FaceID likely coming to all iPhones next...

The TrueDepth camera for the iPhone X works by using a projector to cast 30,000 dots on your face, which it then reads with an infrared camera. Apple already demonstrated applications of the system, FaceID and Animojis, both of which promise implications of their own when the TrueDepth SDK (software developer kit) is available for developers.

By the way, a VCSEL is a semiconductor-based laser diode that emits a...

Analyst: 2018 follow-up to the iPhone X could sport...

In a note to clients — as reported by MacRumors.com — KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the 2018 follow-up to the iPhone X could feature up to 10% more battery power if Apple and LG Chem are able to deploy a one-cell design for the device's L-shaped battery, as opposed to the two-cell battery used in the iPhone X. He writes:

Two new 2H18 iPhone models could adopt L-shaped battery (6.5” & 5.8” OLED models), with capacity upgraded for all models. In order to extend battery life, we believe it is necessary to expand battery capacity because all three new 2H18 models will be equipped with TrueDepth Camera, which consumes more power. We think Apple (US) is developing a 1-cell L-shaped battery in collaboration with LGC (KR). If the new battery enters mass production on time, the 5.8” OLED iPhone model will come with a battery with larger capacity (2,900-3,000mAh with higher RFPCB ASP $2.1-2.4). For the 6.1” LCD...

By Aaron Lee

It’s not for everyone, but Cisdem’s BetterUnarchiver archive manager app may be more useful for some folks than the regular archiver that comes with macOS.

It allows users to compress and decompress archive files. BetterUnarchiver supports unzipping files like Zip, 7z, Rar, ISO, Tar, Cab, Wim, xz, CHM, com, Hfs, Nsis, Udf, and more.

Users can preview files inside an archive before unzipping it. BetterUnarchiver also lets you archive or create password protected zipped files on your Mac.

The tool supports unzipping files in batch and the extraction of multi-volume archive files. It also supports character encoding when extracting files (non-ASCII file names will be displayed correctly).

With BetterUnarchiver. you can compress files to Zip, 7z, and Tar. You can also create password protected 7z and Zip files on Mac for safer transmitting.

Rumor: Apple to release three new iPhone models in...

The rumor mill is churning and it’s thought that Apple will release three iPhones in 2018, including two OLED models and one LCD model that could feature a metal back like the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, reports Nikkei.

Nikkei has cited an anonymous source “privy to the company’s product designs,” the source stating that one of Apple’s 2018 models will boast a 6.1-inch LCD display while the two OLED models will measure in at 5.8 inches and either 6.2 or 6.3 inches.

Apple’s LCD model will boast a metal back that will “come in several colors,” with the body for the device potentially being manufactured by Casetek, a Pegatron subsidiary.

The rumors are in line with previous details shared in a research not by KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo, albeit there’s some variance in size predictions for the three devices.

Kuo has stated that Apple will introduce three iPhones in 2018: an OLED model that measures in at 5.8 inches like the current iPhone X, an...

External Link: HomeKit Vulnerability Discovered,...

Zac Hall of 9to5Mac discovered a vulnerability in HomeKit, Apple’s home automation framework, that could allow unauthorized control of accessories like smart locks and garage door openers. The good news is that Apple has already closed the security hole on the server side, so your devices are no longer vulnerable. Unfortunately, Apple's server-side fix also prevents you from giving remote access to shared users. Another update to iOS next week should eliminate the vulnerability and restore full functionality.
