According to French business magazine Challenges, Apple has acquired Datakalab -- a Paris-based startup specializing in artificial intelligence compression and computer vision technology. 9to5Mac reports: Datakalab described itself as "experts in low power, runtime efficient, and deep learning algorithms" that work on device. On its LinkedIn page, Datakalab highlights "industry leading compression and adaptation to deploy embedded computer vision that is fast, cost-effective and precise." Prior to the Apple acquisition had between 10 and 20 employees. From Datakalab's now-defunct website: "Datakalab is a French technology company that develops computer image analysis algorithms to measure flows in public space. The images are instantly transformed into anonymized statistical data processed locally in 100ms. Datakalab does not store any images or personal data and only keeps statistical data. Datakalab products are built according to the principle of 'Privacy by Design.'" While neither Apple nor DatakaLab have acknowledged the acquisition, Challenges says that the deal was reported to the European Commission this month. The report says that Datakalab's two founders did not join Apple, but multiple other employees did make the jump. Datakalab also held multiple patents related to AI compression and vision technology. The acquisition makes perfect sense given Apple's rumored ambitions to run its upcoming AI-related features in iOS 18 "entirely on device." The European Central Bank is opposed to Apple's proposed changes to the iPhone's near-field communication at the core of Apple Pay, and has complained about it to the European Commission.Apple could have to make additional changes to its NFC APIsPietro Cipollone, a member of the executive board of the ECB, expressed the bank's concerns over Apple's proposal. Cipollone explained that Apple's proposed changes would be insufficient in several ways:The letter argues that by not providing third parties with full access to the Secure Element of its NFC technology, Apple Pay maintains an unfair advantage against third-party payment apps on iPhone. Because of these limitations, contactless payments made through third-party apps on iPhone would be less user-friendly and ultimately be slower than Apple's offering, according to Cipollone. Macworld It has been a while since we last year about Apple’s plans to ditch the physically moving buttons on the iPhone in favor of non-moving buttons with touch-sensitive capacitive sensors. That rumor was last floating around about a year ago when it was believed that the iPhone 15 Pro models would feature these “solid-state” buttons. Of course, that never came to pass, and we haven’t heard a thing until now about the possibility of Apple making this change on any iPhone 16 model. Now, a report from the Chinese state-owned paper Economic Daily claims that ASE Investment Holdings has secured a very large order from Apple for the components necessary to replace the volume and power buttons on the iPhone 16 models with solid-state capacitive buttons. Apple would reportedly also include two additional Taptic Engines—one on each side—to provide a faux “click” feel and other tactile feedback. Details of the order are not provided, so this may be a case of mistaken translation or reporting—Apple has long been expected to add a new capacitive “Capture” button to the iPhone 16 line, on the same side as the power button but lower. This report on parts orders could be related to that, even though the newspaper mentions the previous expectations to replace the power and volume buttons. Capacitive solid-state buttons could have several advantages over physical buttons. Durability is one; the thinnest and easiest-to-bend parts of the iPhone frame are the narrower areas where holes are cut out for the buttons. Capacitive buttons would also be able to tell how hard you’re pressing them, or could even provide features that let you slide along the button, depending on how the sensors are integrated. Using the Taptic Engines to provide feedback would let Apple give different physical feedback for different things–you could “half press” a button and get a subtle click, and fully press it with a stronger click. Press-and-hold actions could get unique feedback as well like little “ticks” counting down a timer when resetting your iPhone. Apple has stopped production of FineWoven accessories, according to reliable Apple leaker and prototype collector known as "Kosutami." From a report: In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kosutami explained that Apple has stopped production of FineWoven accessories due to its poor durability. The company may move to another non-leather material for its premium accessories in the future. Apple introduced FineWoven, a soft fabric material, last year. The company claimed that the material is made of 68 percent post-consumer content and is overall more environmentally friendly compared to the company's previous line of leather accessories. Macworld When the Apple Watch Series 9 launched in September, the biggest change was Apple’s decision to ditch the leather bands in favor of a new FineWoven material.
