LaCie announces d2 Thunderbolt 2 drive w/ new design...

LaCie is out today with the new d2 Thunderbolt 2 drive featuring a new design with a smaller footprint and an optional SSD upgrade for adding faster storage to the mix. The new LaCie d2 is an up-to-6TB hard drive spec’d at 7200 RPM with speeds up to 220 MB/s and two Thunderbolt 2 ports alongside a USB 3 port. Aside from the new design, part of the LaCie d2’s story is the option to add a solid state drive to the package with a user-upgradable solid state drive panel from LaCie to make the d2 even faster and more capable. LaCie says the optional SSD upgrade offers a theoretical speed boost from 220 MB/s to 1150 MB/s for data transfer:

Gold is best – the combined jewelry box &...

We don’t yet know the price of the 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition, but it doesn’t require psychic powers to know that it isn’t going to be cheap. KGH analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s prediction of the most expensive model costing “several thousand dollars” is probably exaggerated, but may not be quite as far-fetched as it seemed.

David Pogue shared one of the things Apple didn’t mention on stage but did reveal during press demonstrations afterwards …

The fanciest model, the gold Apple Phone Edition, comes in a gorgeous jewelry box — which doubles...

Using your default card at a compatible contactless payment terminal is as simple as holding out your iPhone. Once it is within range of the terminal, it automatically opens...

iOS 8 FAQ: What we know about Apple's next-...

Given iOS 7’s major visual overhaul last year, it wouldn’t have been surprising if Apple decided to take a step back and focus on small under-the-hood improvements in iOS 8. But that didn’t happen: iOS 8 looks like it’ll be every bit the game-changer that its predecessor was.

But this time, the focus is on system features and app improvements more than visual tweaks. In particular, the impending update will see a seismic foundational shift in the way apps communicate with each other, opening the door to a richer, more colorful experience for all Apple’s mobile users.

Make no mistake: There’s a lot of new stuff in iOS 8. Here’s what we know about it so far.

Inside Apple’s live event stream failure, and why it...

Streaming Media:

Apple’s live stream of the unveiling of the iPhone 6 and Watch was a disaster today right from the start, with many users like myself having problems trying to watch the event. While at first I assumed it must be a capacity issue pertaining to Akamai, a deeper look at the code on Apple’s page and some other elements from the event shows that decisions made by Apple pertaining to their website, and problems with how they setup storage on Amazon’s S3 service, contributed the biggest problems to the event.

Interesting take on the utter disaster that was the streaming video of this morning’s event.

But those watches were in a non-interactive demo mode, and the only opportunity we got to see the watches actually working were in carefully guided mini-presentations given by the people at the tables.

Megan Geuss

CN.dart.call("xrailTop", {sz:"300x250", kws:["top"], collapse: true});CUPERTINO, CA—Big phones, long the domain of the Android and Windows Phone OEMs, are finally a reality on Apple’s side of the fence. The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus catapult the iPhone into the large-screen era after two years at the 4-inch screen size introduced by the iPhone 5, and the larger sizes drastically change what the phones are like to hold and to use.

Apple Pay aims to disrupt payment industry

TidBITS:

With Apple Pay, Apple’s self-described mission is to replace your wallet, enabling you to pay a bill by holding an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, or the forthcoming Apple Watch, up to a payment sensor. No more fumbling with credit cards and signing receipts, or worrying about having enough cash. In theory, at least, Apple Pay both improves the payment experience and brings new levels of security and privacy to credit card payments.

Adam makes a very good point about wallets, too. This won’t replace it for most of us because we need to carry around other cards as well. But it’s a step towards an interesting future.

My question has always been, is using a credit card really all that difficult for most people that they need and want this kind of replacement?

Macworld:

With the death of the iPod classic, we witness the last of the original 5GB white iPod’s line. No more hard drive. No more squarish screen. No more wheel control.

And, no surprise.

True but there’s still nostalgia for the little thing.

Apple's just-concluded press event in Cupertino was hampered by severe technical problems with online streaming, widespread accounts say. Before the presentation even began, viewers reported hearing multiple songs playing simultaneously. The event itself was hampered by video repeatedly stalling, looping, or simply dropping out entirely, in some cases cutting to bars with a "TV Truck" schedule display on top. For a good portion of the event, people who could successfully tune in heard a mix of English with Chinese translation dubbed over top. At certain points the entire Apple website disp...

You’ve been hankering for Apple to incorporate a near-field communication payment system in its devices.

And it’s on its way.

Per The Mac Observer, Apple announced ApplePay, its mobile payment system, during its media Tuesday. The system requires the just announced iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, both of which include NFC support.

ApplePay and the iPhone 6 lineup rely on a new chip dubbed Secure Element to securely store credit card information, and that data isn’t shared with Apple at any time. Cards registered with iTunes account are automatically available, and users can take photos of other credit cards to add them to ApplePay, too.

Ask Ars: When should I plan to upgrade my iPhone?

Do you have any of these older iPhones? Here's our advice on whether it's time for a replacement.

Andrew Cunningham

A new iPhone is here. You've spent most of the day watching Apple's announcement, the coverage around it, the reaction to the announcement and the coverage, and the reactions to those reactions. It's the standard tech news rigmarole, which can be fun, but ultimately doesn't really help people make purchasing decisions.

Let's assume you're a current iPhone owner, and you're being tempted by the new one's wiles. We're here to throw some water on the early adoption fire, to be the voice of reason that tells you whether it's really practical to upgrade or not. Here's a list of all the phones that are going to run iOS 8, and what you should be thinking about if you're looking for a replacement.

iPhone 5S owners: Keep your phone

This recommendation doesn't surprise anyone, right? If you have an iPhone 5S, you didn't buy a phone...

Apple CEO Tim Cook teased that he had "one more thing" up his sleeve before introducing the Apple Watch at Apple's gargantuan event on Tuesday, but as it turns out, he had two. This definitely fit into the category of “one last thing…” that Apple historically concluded its keynote speeches with, but it might be worth the hype and anticipation.

On Tuesday, Apple announced its long-awaited Apple Watch, a device that the company said will define the emerging wearable devices market.

Per AppleInsider, the device uses a “digital crown”, a physical dial that rests on the right side of the device. Using this, users can interact with the device without a need to touch the screen, which would obscure it.

The crown button also acts as the home button, and can be pressed to return a user to the main screen...
