Apple drops OS X Yosemite GM Candidate on devs,...

OS X Yosemite as of the Public Beta.

Andrew Cunningham

Not content to let some other company hog all the tens, MacRumors reports that Apple has just released the OS X Yosemite GM Candidate to developers using the new operating system. OS X 10.10 has been available to developers since it was unveiled at WWDC in June, and the release of a proposed "Golden Master" build suggests that Yosemite's fall release date will come sooner rather than later.

Note that a "GM Candidate" doesn't necessarily mean that this is the build Apple will release to the public later in the fall. It does indicate, however, that Apple has squashed the show-stopping bugs and that any future builds will contain minor patches rather than major changes. Apple has always released beta...

Apple Watch to be managed by a dedicated iPhone app...

As part of an extensive hands-on by Ariel Adams, the piece shines some light on how the Apple Watch is controlled and managed. At the media event, Apple showed a wide variety of watch apps … but did not mention how they get onto the watch itself.

Adams’ post says that users download Apple Watch apps through a central hub app on the iPhone. Rather than having an App Store UI on a tiny watch screen, users install content on the device from their phone. This is similar to how iPods are managed via the iTunes app on a Mac or PC.

Apple Watch users will install an Apple Watch app on their iPhone, which will be used to download apps onto the watch as well as likely manage Apple Watch settings. A user’s iPhone is also used to help with computational demands. Apple cleverly pushes a lot of...

Last week, #BendGate took the Internet by storm. I’m sure you’re all familiar with it by now, but if not, BendGate was created from an alleged bending issue with Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus. China’s iPhone 6 approval is good for Apple, bad for...

Not everyone who waited in long lines outside Apple stores earlier this month was buying a new iPhone for themselves. Many of those buyers were plunking down cash and then hopping flights to China to resell the new devices. But after the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were finally cleared for sale in China a month after launching, it looks the party’s over for black market sellers—though the launch will likely send Apple’s revenue soaring.

It’s tough to tell how many of the 10 million-plus iPhones Apple sold in three days were churned for a profit in China, but buyers were willing to pay $1,300 or much, much more for the device rather than go without. Now that China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has approved both iPhones, which go on sale Oct. 17, Chinese buyers who waited will pay significantly less—the iPhone 6 starts at 5288 yuan, or $860.57...

In spite of some nifty new hardware, the iPhone 6 Plus may in fact generate a lower frames per second rate than the iPhone 6 or iPhone 5s handsets when it comes to rendering 2D and 3D graphics at its native resolution.

Per AppleInsider, a set of GFXBench 3.0 GPU benchmarks published in an initial reviews of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus showed moderate to significant GPU improvements over iPhone 5s across the board.

However, one of the benchmark’s developers, Eszter Szilva, stated that the current, public version of the app did not yet support the native resolutions of the new models’ displays. Kishonti provided a prerelease GFXBench version 3.0.2 that does. The benchmark app should be released publicly soon, but the developer shared a prerelease copy to complement benchmark scores.

When installed on an OS X Mavericks system, the patch upgrades the Bash shell from version 3.2.51 to version 3.2.53. The update requires the OS X 10.9.5, 10.8.5, or 10.7.5 updates to be installed on the system first. Apple Watch is about more than technology: It's...

As he concluded the inaugural iPad event back in January 2010, Steve Jobs summed up Apple’s mission in a single slide. Two street signs were labeled Technology and Liberal Arts, and he explained that Apple operates at the intersection. With Apple Watch, Apple seems to have added a new cross-street: fashion.

Where good looks have always been somewhat secondary to Apple devices usability, the company’s first wearable is all about style, so much so that for its first public appearance Apple chose one of the hippest boutiques in Paris during Fashion Week, not the Apple Store at Carrousel du Louvre.

Belkin's Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock HD adds...

While the notoriously cost-conscious PC market hasn’t embraced Thunderbolt technology yet, you can’t buy a brand-new Mac from Apple without it having at least one Thunderbolt port. Thunderbolt’s versatility means that Apple can keep its computers slim and the ports to a minimum—with the right cables or adapters, a Thunderbolt port can connect devices that use FireWire 800, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, and Ethernet.

The problem arises when you need all those connections at the same time. A versatile dock like Belkin’s just-announced Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock HD, while seemingly pricey at $300, could mean the difference between getting along with a MacBook Air (two USB ports and one Thunderbolt) or an iMac (four USB and two...

With 2.1 million pixels, the Retina HD resolution of iPhone 6 Plus demands a lot more GPU performance than either iPhone 6 or iPhone 5s to render 2D and 3D graphics at its native resolution, resulting in benchmarks with--in some cases--lower frames per second rendering results in native resolution GPU tests.

How the Hollywood Reporter says that Beats (and thus Apple) is suing Lamar for claiming that he co-founded the company.

The company says that by marketing his new line of headphones by promoting himself as a “co-founder” of Beats, Lamar is falsely using the Apple subsidiary’s name for false marketing. Furthermore, the company is claiming that various news reports referring to Lamar as a co-founder are misleading. Apple’s lawyers are demanding...

Although nearly all Mac users are unaffected by the issue Apple has made good on its word to quickly fix a serious security flaw in bash, a Unix shell that comes as part of OS X. Apple acknowledged the problem on Friday, and today released OS X bash update 1.0 for OS X Lion (10.7), Mountain Lion (10.8) and Mavericks (10.9). The flaw, known as "Shellshock," could potentially allow users who have set up advanced Unix services that interact with the web to be vulnerable to remote intrusion....

The patched Bash shell on a system running OS X 10.9.5.

Andrew Cunningham

Apple has just released the OS X Bash Update 1.0 for OS X Mavericks, Mountain Lion, and Lion, a patch that fixes the "Shellshock" bug in the Bash shell that we first reported on last week. Bash, which is the default shell for many Unix and Linux-based operating systems, has been updated two times to fix the Shellshock remote exploit bug, and many Linux distributions have already issued updates to their users.

When installed on an OS X Mavericks system, the patch upgraded the Bash shell from version 3.2.51 to version 3.2....

Consumer Reports puts iPhone 6 handsets through bend...

The Internet has exploded with images and videos of bent iPhone 6 Plus handsets as well as a viral video of someone deforming the handset with his bare hands. And, with that, Consumer Reports sprang into scientific action to perform actual tests that seem to indicate that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets may be tougher than currently rumored.

Per Consumer Reports, the publication used what’s called a “three-point flexural test,” in which the phone is supported at two points on either end, then force is applied at a third point on the top—you can see the testing for yourself in our video. The group applied and measured the force using a high-precision Instron compression test machine. Along with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, we tested the LG G3, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and HTC One (M8), and for those wondering about their old iPhones, they tested the...

Opinion: Why the iPhone 6 camera is only 8 megapixels

By Bob Snow

The iPhone 6 camera has the same 8 megapixel count as the 5s and this has spec-happy geeks bashing the phone. There are compelling reasons for going lower and I will try to lay them out.

Small sensors can suffer when they have a high pixel density. The sites that gather light become very small and they typically sacrifice low light performance. Low light performance gets traded off for higher resolution and even this becomes an issue with small sensors. No matter how high the resolution of the sensor, lens resolution comes into play much more when the sensor is small. If the sensor is small enough, the lens will not have nearly enough resolving power to take advantage of all the pixels. You need a bigger sensor for that. The image can only be as sharp as the light coming from the lens and that will most likely be the limiting factor. Think of a tiny sensor with a trillion pixels. Lens resolution will be the limiting factor.

MDC locking up. XSAN 3.1 OSX 10.9.4, MDC Mac Mini

Forums: TroubleshootingTags: MDCMavericksMac Mini

XSAN configuration went well. System appears to work well for about a week, then MDC1 will usually freeze up. It appears to fail over to MDC2, but XSAN admin and cvadmin still list MDC1 as hosting. This is usually discovered by clients losing access to volume. It requires a hard shutdown of MDC1 and sometimes MDC2 and reboot of storage to get back. The log files are usually lost in the Hard Boot. Once restarted, everything works ok again for about a week then freezes again.

Any thoughts?

Opinion: Flexibility Under Stress

By Bob Snow

The new iPhone 6 Plus appears to have a problem. There have been a number of reports of the Plus deforming under a relatively normal mode of use. The phone, when placed in a front pocket for a length of time and stressed, can bend and not return to its original flat form. This is not a problem that can be simply dismissed, nor is it the end of the world. Apple knows how to benefit from the emotion and hype in the lead up to such an important introduction. The downside is that any negative publicity about the product gets similarly amplified. Take a deep breath and let’s look at the ramifications.

Apple relies on profits from phone sales more than any other product line, and the Plus is a costly and very personal product from the perspective of the consumer. There is a lot riding on this, but it could be much worse. I don’t think the problem will effect the 4.7-inch phone,...
