Apple hires founder of Dropcam for an (apparently)...

Greg Duffy, a former Nest manager, has joined Apple — the company where Tony Fadell made his name by helping invent the iPod. It’s not clear what Duffy's position will be, but according to The Information “given his background, starting security camera firm Dropcam, people who know Mr. Duffy suggest he is likely to be leading a special project at Apple that is operating like a startup within the company.”

Dropcam, founded in 2009, was scooped up by Google in 2014. It later fell under parent company Alphabet after Google’s major restructuring and was absorbed into Nest. The Dropcam has been reduced the Nest Cam. It’s a security camera with 24/7 live streaming, a magnetic stand, and person alerts with Nest Aware.

Duffy also created Trans/Star, a PC-based “softswitch that bridged GR303 from the Siemens DCO to VoIP.” He has also served as a software engineer intern at Microsoft, a...

The second accuses Qualcomm of not making its cellular standard essential patents available broadly and cheaply. It asks the court to determine the terms of a patent license between Qualcomm and Apple.

Apple takes patent battle with Qualcomm to China

Apple has filed two new lawsuits against Qualcomm, this time in China, that allege the mobile chip maker abused its market dominance and patents to charge excessively high licensing fees.

The legal action centers on Qualcomm’s standards-essential patents for its cellular technology. Allegedly, the company refused to negotiate a fair licensing fee for the patents and even declined to license some of them to Apple.

Mac Sales Declined Nearly 10 Percent Last Year

It's not surprising that Mac sales dropped for Apple in 2016 as they experienced their first year over year sales decline since 2001. What is interesting, however, is that as Mac sales dropped roughly 10% and personal computers overall dropped 5.7% for the year, the top four leaders in the market all saw growth as Apple was pushed to number five. The top four vendors are now Lenovo, HP, Dell, and ASUS. Apple Seemingly Censors UltraFine 5K Monitor Reviews...

It appears Apple is filtering and censoring bad reviews of the LG's UltraFine 5K display. From a report on The Next Web: The deletion was first spotted by a Reddit user four days ago. Though it's possible the reviews were removed for some other reason, at first glance, it looks like censorship. It's not a good look for the company. Apple said it was getting out of the monitor business, and instead chose to work more closely with third-party partners, heavily featuring LG's 5K and 4K UltraFine displays at its recent MacBook Pro unveiling. But then the monitor received multiple negative reviews from users who were experiencing issues such as the screen failing to wake up from sleep. The Reddit post also points out that: "In many cases, attempts to fix the problem through physical reconnection[sic] of the monitor, or manual restarts, have caused the attached Mac to crash, become otherwise unresponsive, or develop problems with the touch bar (where equipped)."

Apple is working on a deal to manufacture some of its products in India, according to a senior government official speaking to The Wall Street Journal. Apple is asking for tax and tariff incentives in exchange for bringing its business into the country; in particular it wants a 15-year tax holiday on all of its imports into the country. The official said that most of Apple's requests were "workable" and that it is "almost a done deal."

Much of Apple's growth in 2014 and 2015 was driven by the company's expansion into China, a relatively untapped market that was eager to buy its products....

It’s a new year, and a new future for the Wine (Wine is not an emulator) Project. The group recently released Wine 2.0 with over 6,600 changes, including support for Microsoft Office 2013 and the ability to use 64-bit apps on macOS. Wine 2.0 is part of a planned annual release cycle for the compatibility layer that allows Linux and macOS users to run some Windows applications on their machines.

Wine 2.0 follows the release of Wine 1.0 way back in 2008, though various iterations of Wine 1.0 have rolled out since then. The first release candidate for Wine 2.0 became available in December.

Apple website switches to San Francisco font

Side-by-side comparison of Apple.com home page on Monday and today

Have you looked at the Apple website today? Many people may not notice a difference, but a pretty drastic change took place in the last 24 hours. The default font for the site is now San Francisco, the same default font used in all current Apple operating systems.

As a middle-aged person who has worn glasses since childhood, I welcome the change. San Francisco is a much more readable font, particularly when applied to the smaller type at the bottom of the Apple.com home page. Headlines seem more bold as well, as  you can see in the image at the top of this post.

Of course, not everyone is going to like the change; I've already seen griping from certain bloggers who think the font change has ruined the website. What do you think about the move to San Francisco? Leave your comments below!

How much has that Mac been used?

Mac King Fu:

Knowing how much a Mac has actually been used by its owner can be very useful if you’re buying pre-owned. A Mac three years old that’s been used very infrequently could be a better purchase than a two-year old Mac that’s been left running 24/7, for example.

While physical condition of the Mac gives a clue, you can garner some further clues by a little software probing. It’s not entirely accurate, and comes with substantial caveats, but could be worth a try.

Very interesting read. I definitely learned a few things about the myriad of data in the System Profile app. Useful if you are buying, also useful if you are selling.

Note that option-clicking on Apple > System Information… is a shortcut, bypassing the more traditional Apple > About This Mac menu item.

Apple Pay use is on the rise

Consumer spending analytics company TXN says that Apple Pay is on the rise, based on data from its panel of over three million consumers. Analysis of credit card bills from banks that distinguish Apple Pay transactions suggest that usage of the payment method grew by slightly over 50% in the 12 months ending December 2016.

Overall, Apple Pay usage has been growing steadily over the last year, according to TXN. The number of monthly Apple Pay transactions grew by 50% between December 2015 and December 2016.

“In conclusion, Apply Pay had strong growth in 2016, but still accounts for a fairly small percent of all credit card transactions, leaving lots of room for further growth,” says TXN. “The businesses with fastest Apply Pay adoption are unsurprisingly apps and websites popular on Apple mobile devices.”

Apple Pay works with the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE...

Apple's plans for manufacturing in India gain...

Apple’s plans to manufacture in India made headway on Wednesday as executives of the company presented detailed plans to the country’s federal government.

It may be some time though, before Apple gets permission for its proposal to manufacture in India as it reportedly involves a request for deep cuts in the import duties for components. The meeting on Wednesday is said to have ended inconclusively, according to sources close to the situation.

The Apple executives included Priya Balasubramaniam, a company vice president.

“We’ve been working hard to develop our operations in India and are proud to deliver the best products and services in the world to our customers here,” Apple said in a statement after the meeting. “We appreciate the constructive and open dialogue we’ve had with government about further expanding our local operations.”

Apple is apparently looking for next-gen flexible LCD screen technology from Japan Display to use in future iPhone models. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is ‘considering’ the new panels for future iPhone designs which could pave the way for bendable smartphones becoming mainstream.

Japan Display’s technology uses LCD and plastic rather than the typical LCD and glass, which makes it able to flex and bend as shown in the photo above (left).
