OS X Yosemite: How to Reset Your Administrator...

In the early years of OS X, the Mac operating system was sold on a DVD. If a user forgot the administrator password, perhaps the simplest way (of several) would be to use that disc to set a new administrator password and regain control of the Mac. Nowadays, there is no install disc provided with OS X, and so an alternative method is necessary. John Martellaro explores just a few.

Report: Microsoft and Yahoo vie to become Safari’s...

Google Maps and YouTube are no longer bundled as default apps on iPhones and iPads, but there's one big place on Apple's devices where Google is still the default option: the Safari search bar. Microsoft's Bing, Yahoo (also Bing-powered), and the privacy-minded DuckDuckGo are all included as options, but Google has been the default for as long as iPhones have existed.

That may change next year according to a report from The Information (paywall). Apple and Google's search agreement is reportedly set to expire soon, and both Microsoft and Yahoo are already said to be talking with Apple Internet Software and Services SVP Eddy Cue about becoming Safari's default search option. This isn't the first time we've heard about...

Yahoo, Microsoft vying to become default search...

Yahoo and Microsoft are courting Apple in hopes of becoming the default search provider for the Safari web browser, a report says. Apple renewed a mapping and search partnership with Google in 2010, but that contract is set to expire next year, which could give other companies an entry point. Both Yahoo and Microsoft executives are said to have approached Eddy Cue -- Apple's senior VP for Internet Software and Services -- about a potential deal. So far though there's no sign that Apple has made a decision, and indeed it could choose to remain with Google....

Made of powdercoated steel, Cliff comes in three separate parts. The larger top piece contains three holes on the front, top, and back. All are placed in positions that will hide cords well. Introducing “Twitter Offers”

Twitter:

Starting today (in the U.S. only), we’re beginning to test a new way for advertisers to connect with consumers on Twitter and convert them to loyal customers in their stores, on their websites and in their apps. This feature, Twitter Offers, enables advertisers to create card-linked promotions and share them directly with Twitter users.

There is zero chance I would ever use this. Anyone else interested in giving your credit card info to Twitter?

How to get 20 percent of everything in the App Store...

Gosh, I love this time of year.

It’s time to be with your family, copious amounts of eating, football and crazy deals on stuff. While everyone’s hunting for that amazing deal on Black Friday (just say no to Thursday shopping though, please) but there’s one deal in particular that I wait for each November: 20 percent off iTunes gift cards.

It should be obvious, but the benefits to iTunes gift cards are that they can be loaded onto your iTunes account and used for everything from apps, to music, to movies, to TV show, and the list goes on.

I spend about $500 per year on iTunes/App Store content, and it rarely goes on sale, so I stock up on enough iTunes gift cards to get me through the year each November during the gift card sale.

How much do you spend annually in iTunes?

After missing out on the brief deal that PayPal was offering on eBay (and living too far away from...

Review: Heckler Design @Rest Stand for iPad (2014)

We first saw Heckler Design's @Rest nearly three years ago, when it was a $59 steel iPad stand. @Rest has recently received a redesign — the stand now has a slightly smaller footprint. It also lacks the adhesive pads seen in its prior incarnation, and loses two of the grips used to keep an iPad in place. Additionally, the rubber feet for the bottom of the stand now come already affixed to @Rest, rather than separately. @Rest is also now only $29. The rest of the stand's functionality remains the same. It has two separate viewing angles, 30 and 60 degrees, and an opening on both sides to run a Lightning cable through. @Rest comes in seven different colors, and we received the black-gray version of the stand. We'll keep this review brief, as @Rest is still very similar to its 2011 edition in functionality; refer to our past review for more details.{/exp:char_limit}

Car-hailing apps are on a never-ending quest to recruit more drivers to cultivate a reputation of reliability. Lyft, Uber, and other startups already rely

Driver Destination launched Tuesday as part of

of cars on the road. Drivers simply enter their destination and choose to see requests that are only along that route.

IDC: iPad’s first year of decline expected as...

The latest numbers from market research company IDC reveal that worldwide tablet growth is expected to have significantly declined in 2014, with just 7.2% year-over-year growth compared to 52.5% in 2013. A contributing factor will likely be the iPad’s first year of decline as the tablet’s market share continues to fall because of a growing number of cheaper alternatives.

IDC finds that the slowdown in sales of both the iPad and the broader tablet market is largely unsurprising, given that tablets have a longer upgrade cycle that is closer to that of computers than smartphones. It was originally expected that tablets would be...

FCC pressures T-Mobile into showing actual speed...

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission this week reached an agreement with T-Mobile to ensure that customers receive proper information about the speed of their wireless internet connection, even if the user has a capped data plan. The carrier has 60 days to implement the changes outlined in the agreement.

The underlying confusion stems from T-Mobile exempting certain speed test services from a customer’s monthly data allotment on capped plans. For instance, a T-Mobile customer with an iPhone 6 could use the popular Ookla SpeedTest app to check the speed of his or her connection without using any data.

The issue is that, since certain speed test services are exempt from monthly data allotments, customers on...

Susquehanna Raises AAPL Target to $135 on Strong...

Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Chris Caso raised his 12 month target price for Apple's stock from US$120 up to $135 on Tuesday in response to continued high demand for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. According to his research, demand for the iPhone 6 Plus is so high that Apple simply can't make phones as fast as consumers buy them.

The Mac Observer Spin: Demand for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus hasn't dropped off since their introduction in September, and we're just now entering into the busiest shopping season for the year. Apple's real problem this holiday season won't be selling iPhones, it'll be making enough to meet demand.

Apple stock ($AAPL) crossed yet another momentous milestone for its financials, hitting $700 billion market capitalization as the stock ticked over $119.65. Through 2013, the price tumbled over investor doubts about new product categories and Cook’s leadership. In recent months, though, $AAPL stock has returned and surpassed its 2012 highs. The reduction in shares due to Apple’s buybacks program has been more than offset than share price growth, off the back of the company’s strong earnings and forecasts.

Made from solid steel and billed as "the world's smallest, pocket-size stand and tripod mount" for iOS devices, MOS's new Kick ($35) is a very low-profile option designed primarily for holding iPhones upright for photography purposes. Measuring around 2.8" long by 1.2" wide by 0.35" tall at its largest points, Kick includes a circular screw hole for attachment of a self-supplied tripod, plus a screw-tension adjustable groove that holds your iOS device. The groove is padded with three thin sheets of rubber, and can be tightened around the edge of your device if you want to hold it closer to 90 degrees than on a reclining angle. Kick also has a triangular keychain attachment point and a bottle opener on the sides, both a little on the sharp side for something you might toss into a pocket. While Kick can be used as a stand and does have enough weight and strength to hold a bare iPad Air 2, it's definitely on the fine edge of tablet compatibility, and best suited to smaller devices.{/...

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was particularly keen on the idea of iCloud, a platform that he introduced shortly before his death in late 2011. Jobs had a particular interest in keeping photos, one of the most highly shared forms of media, in sync between devices. Yet, over three years...

Hands On: Improvox (iOS)

Until recently, the average person could not get their hands on pitch correction software. The software had a tendency to cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars and required an engineering degree to use. However, there has been a surge of software available to everyone in the last few years. Among these is ImproVox is available for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch and ImproVox by developer MuseAmi, a clever app that puts a simple recording studio in your hands....

Think Retro: When Apple packaging made the hard sell

Today, every one of Apple’s products comes in a clean white box. They’re barely decorated, just a picture of the product that nestles inside and some apologetically light grey text tucked away in a corner detailing specs and mandatory regulatory information. It was not always thus; here’s the box one of my Newton MessagePads came in.

Yes, of course I kept the box.

For a child of the ’80s like me, that style of photography—moody, low-lit, with shafts of light picking out form and texture—is still desperately exciting. And even as a kid, I was excited about the idea of working, of business, of being productive, so the kind of language and lifestyle you see in the pictures was terribly beguiling. (I’d like to blame the ’80s for this too, with its emphasis on self-improvement and free market economies, but maybe I was just a weird kid.)

BlackBerry offering up to $550 for your iPhone...

Itching to “trade up” from your iPhone to a shiny new BlackBerry Passport? Thanks to BlackBerry’s latest promotion, you’ll be able to do just that. The program will let Passport buyers get up to $550 in credit towards the new device when they trade in an iPhone 4s or higher.

In order to get the full amount, you’ll need to trade a brand-new iPhone 6 (or presumably a 6 Plus, though it’s not specifically listed on the chart). The trade-in value for each device is actually much lower (ranging from $90 to $400), but shoppers buying a Passport will get a “top-up” worth an additional $150.

If, for whatever reason, you’d like to take advantage of this offer, you’ll need to wait just a few weeks. The program goes into effect on December 1st and runs through...

There is still no firm announcement on when shooting will commence....

Apple responds, points out flaws in AAA study of...

Apple has issued a statement criticizing a study conducted by the University of Utah for the American Automobile Association in October that rated Apple's Siri (and other naturalistic voice-command virtual assistants by proxy) as "the most" distracting in-car task compared to just driving, adjusting the car's radio or temperature, or using built-in car navigation or infotainment systems. In its response, Apple points out some serious flaws in the study, including the fact that it deliberately avoided using the driving-specific Siri Eyes Free or CarPlay options....

A new photo of the construction site of Apple Campus 2 has been posted to the City of Cupertino's official website for the project. Multiple structures can now be seen taking shape -- mostly support buildings, while infrastructure and progress on the "moat"-like tunnel system around or under the main building continues. There has been no update to the overall schedule for the project of late, suggesting that things are moving along on the revised schedule that will see the main building ready for use sometime late in 2016....

Thoughts of Thanksgiving for All That Is FOSS

Well Thanksgiving week is upon us here in the land of stars and stripes, and in anticipation of all the social events soon to besiege us, more than a few Linux bloggers have been practicing keeping their favorite barstools warm down at the blogosphere's Punchy Penguin Saloon. How chilly would those stools get if we were all flitting here and there from this party to that? It would be truly unkind. Much better to stay put and keep to ourselves in a comfortable place where inane small talk is frowned upon.

Pad & Quill [Sponsor]

Pad and Quill, a Minneapolis based company, began as an idea on a napkin in 2010. Starting with 4 prototypes, a barter to paint our web designers deck and a Paypal account to track orders, Brian and Kari began shipping cases from their basement and since they have grown to a business selling tens of thousands of unique hand crafted products a year.

Initially riding the Apple iOS wave, Brian and Kari (Mr and Mrs PQ) sought to bring to market iPhone and iPad cases crafted from organic materials such as leather, Baltic birch wood and buckram linen book cloth. Over time, the celebration of the craftsman, the accentuation of natural beauty and the delight of their customers solidified as the core values of the company,...

Lollipop's Encryption Takes a Hefty Toll

The new full-disk encryption feature that's enabled by default in Android 5.0 Lollipop comes at a hefty price in terms of performance, according to a recent benchmark report.
In fact, when full-disk encryption is enabled, random read performance drops by 62.9 percent, while random write performance falls by 50.5 percent, AnandTech reported late last week. Sequential read performance, meanwhile, drops by a whopping 80.7 percent. The bottom line is "serious negative implications for device performance in any situation where applications are reading or writing to disk," the report concludes.

iCloud reportedly held back by ‘deep organizational...

The Information has published a report that claims “deep organizational issues” within Apple are holding up iCloud development and complicating products. The cloud-based service, which helps keep data in sync between iPhones, iPads, iPods and Macs, reportedly lacks from a centralized iCloud team at the Cupertino-based company.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was particularly keen on the idea of iCloud, a platform that he introduced shortly before his death in late 2011. Jobs had a particular interest in keeping photos, one of the most highly shared forms of media, in sync between devices. Yet, over three years later, Apple has not reached the full potential it envisioned with iCloud.

For an example of this, one must look no further than iCloud Photo...

Review: Kerf Case Wood Cases for iPhone 6 and iPhone...

We normally don't review any shell-style cases — usually simple, cheap plastic cases that provide no button coverage and offer virtually no protection — but we've made an exception for Kerf Case's Wood Cases ($69-$149) for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Handsome cases that come in a number of materials for either of Apple's newer iPhones, Kerf Cases give users the opportunity to get an attractive wooden case at a lower price than some competitors, while sacrificing protection. We received cork ($69) and spalted maple cases ($99) for iPhone 6, and a black walnut case ($99) for iPhone 6 Plus — other than the cork, different cases might cost more or less than what we've reviewed based on the wood used.{/exp:char_limit}
