How to watch the live stream of Apple's 9/7...

The next iPhone may or may not be a revolution, but it will be televised—well, live streamed to be more exact. Apple plans to live-stream the keynote taking place on Wednesday, September 7, at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

Bookmark this page on Apple.com and you’ll be all set. There’s even a link that will download a calendar invite so you can be reminded when it’s time to tune in.

Apple also fired up its long-dormant Twitter account with a single promoted tweet (a clever trick to keep it off the account’s timeline) about the event. If you retweet this, you’ll get a reminder via Twitter shortly before the event starts.

Dell + EMC: History Is Made

I've been involved in mergers and acquisitions for decades, and I used to run an acquisition cleanup team while at IBM. I've seen so many bad acquisitions that it is generally far easier to point out the good ones. What is somewhat ironic, given my background, is that the best largely have been executed by Dell, using a process initially developed by IBM. One of the most painful mergers I was involved with was the one between HP and Compaq -- which I aggressively tried to kill, fearing neither firm would survive it intact.

Apple Music gains discounted $99/year membership...

Apple Music just became more affordable for everyone. Apple stores and select retailers have rolled out a new 12-month Apple Music gift card, priced at $99. That comes out to $8.25 per month, which is about an 18% savings compared to the standard rate of $9.99. Or you could look at it like you’re getting about 2 months of service for free when you pre-pay for your upcoming year.

The new gift card recently launched at Apple stores, but you’ll have to hit up another retailer if you’re looking to buy it online.

Apple reportedly boosts iPhone 7 production orders...

Apple is apparently increasing production orders for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, which will be officially unveiled at the company’s fall media event on Wednesday September 7, according to a new report by Digitimes.

Although Digitimes makes often unreliable claims, it is more accurate with supply chain reporting like this one. The report says Apple has boosted production for iPhone 7 components by about 10%. A reason for the spike in production is not given but it implies Apple is more confident about iPhone 7 sales this year than it was initially.

We know Apple is going to announce the iPhone 7/Plus and an updated Apple Watch next week and that’s really exciting. However, one small downside of the upcoming announcement is the impending drop in value of your soon-to-be-outdated Apple devices, whether they are your daily drivers or an older device that’s been sitting in your desk.

Every year newer models push the older iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks farther and farther down the path of obsolescence. But there’s good news: you still have time to sell your devices and we’ll help you maximize the money you get for them too... more…

NSO Has Been Selling a Smartphone-Surveilling...

The New York Times continues their coverage of the commercial spytech industry, noting its services "are in higher demand now that companies like Apple, Facebook and Google are using stronger encryption to protect data in their systems, in the process making it harder for government agencies to track suspects... For the last six years, the NSO Group's main product, a tracking system called Pegasus, has been used by a growing number of government agencies to target a range of smartphones -- including iPhones, Androids, and BlackBerry and Symbian systems -- without leaving a trace...to extract text messages, contact lists, calendar records, emails, instant messages and GPS locations." Slashdot reader turkeydance quotes their article:

That will cost you $650,000, plus a $500,000 setup fee with an Israeli outfit called the NSO Group. You can spy on more people if you would like -- just check out the company's price list. The NSO Group is one of a number of companies that sell...

As expected, the rumor machines are running overtime in the last few days leading up to Wednesday's announcements of a new iPhone and Apple Watch. The latest is via AppleInsider, which received a copy of a new research paper provided by Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities. In that paper, Kuo outlines the latest that's known about the upcoming iPhone.

The device is expected to come in 32, 128 and 256 gigabyte versions, eliminating both the undersized 16GB and popular 64GB storage tiers. But the big news comes in the area of the display, which is expected to be the same type of True Tone display used on the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. Coupled with a new ambient light sensor, it's expected that the newest iPhone models will have much better image quality, especially in low-light conditions.

Also as expected, the...

An anonymous Slashdot reader quotes BetaNews about new legal documents filed Friday:
Microsoft is fighting the US Justice Department in an attempt to quash a law that prevents companies informing customers that the government is requesting their data. The technology giant has the backing of other tech companies as well as media outlets. Amazon, Apple, Google, Fox News, Electronic Frontier Foundation and Mozilla are among those offering their support to Microsoft. The lawsuit says that blocking companies from keeping their customers informed is unconstitutional, and it comes at a time when tech companies in particular are keen to be as open and transparent as possible about government requests for data....

These Are the Six Crypto-Currencies Approved By Apple

An anonymous reader quotes Softpedia: Anthony Di Iorio, founder of Jaxx, a crypto-currency wallet, claims that an Apple representative revealed to him the six crypto-currencies allowed on the App Store, during a private phone conversation... Di Iorio had this conversation with the Apple employee after the company removed his Jaxx iOS app from the store. The Apple employee told Di Iorio that they had to remove his app because it featured support for Dash, another blockchain technology, touted as an alternative to Bitcoin. During the conversation, Di Iorio asked what crypto-currencies Apple approves of, so he'd know what to remove from Jaxx's iOS version and get his app back on the App Store. Di Iorio says that Apple is comfortable approving apps on its App Store that handle only six crypto-currencies: Bitcoin, Dogecoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, the DAO and Ripple. Reaction to Apple's list of approved crypto-currencies wasn't positive, at least on Twitter. Most users criticized Apple's...

Apple May Bring Back Billions In Profits To The U.S.

An anonymous Slashdot reader quotes a report from the San Jose Mercury News:
Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company plans to bring back billions of dollars in profit to the U.S. next year. Cook's statement, made during an interview with RTE radio Thursday, contradicts his previous public statements on the issue: He has said for years that U.S. corporate taxes are too high, and that the Silicon Valley company wouldn't be repatriating profit until its home country changed its tax code.

"Right now I would forecast that we repatriate next year"Cook said, saying that the company has "provisioned several billion" for that purpose.
An interesting side-note: Apple accounts for 40% of Silicon Valley's profits.

Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak recently said removing the headphone jack in the next version of the iPhone is going to "tick off a lot of people." It's been rumored for months that Apple would be scrapping the 3.5 mm headphone jack in the iPhone 7 expected next week. Such a move could upset users who have invested in listening technology that uses the jack, Wozniak said. Ditching the headphone jack could be the prelude to another rumored new product: Bluetooth earbuds based on a very-low-powered radio chip developed exclusively by Apple.

This is usually indicate of an upcoming refresh.  As shown from the screenshots, new stock of iPad Air 2 is estimated far beyond the September 7th date of the Apple event, which would suggest that Apple is changing up the iPad lineup in the next couple of weeks.

Clinton's First Email Server Was a Power Mac...

An anonymous reader shares with us an excerpt from a report via Ars Technica: As she was being confirmed as Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton contacted Colin Powell to ask him about his use of a Blackberry while in the same role. According to a Federal Bureau of Investigations memorandum published today (PDF), Powell warned Clinton that if it became public that she was using a Blackberry to "do business," her e-mails would be treated as "official" record and be subject to the law. "Be very careful," Powell said according to the FBI. "I got around it all by not saying much and not using systems that captured the data." Perhaps Clinton's troubles began when she switched from a Blackberry-hosted e-mail account to an account on her Clintonemail.com domain -- a domain hosted on an Apple Power Mac "G4 or G5" tower running in the Clintons' Chappaqua, New York residence. The switch to the Power Mac as a server occurred the same month she exchanged messages with Powell. The Power Mac,...

External Link: Full Scale of Dropbox Hack Revealed

File sharing service Dropbox is warning users who created accounts before 2012 to change their passwords, due to a breach that occurred that year. (Obviously, if you've already changed your password, there's no need to do so again willy-nilly.) Dropbox previously disclosed the attack, but the full scope of the breach has only recently become known: 5 GB of documents containing email addresses and hashed passwords for over 68 million users. If you used a high-quality password and didn't reuse it on other sites, there is little cause for alarm, thanks to Dropbox’s strong password hashing, but you should change your password if prompted.

Decluttr expects iPhone trade-ins to peak this week

Recommerce site Decluttr.com says it’s experienced a surge in iPhone 6 trade-ins as consumers anticipate the launch of Apple’s “iPhone 7” next week. The company is reporting a 73% boost in the past month alone, and is predicting an influx of the iPhone 6 and 6s models will be traded-in following Apple’s press conference scheduled for Sept. 7.

The site, which offers cash for unwanted smart phones, DVDs, CDs, video games and electronics, believes the increase comes from consumers’ desire to make additional cash to purchase the upcoming iPhone. Data from Decluttr has shown that once a new Apple model is announced, the predecessor can lose up to 12% of its value the week after the announcement, so consumers frequently act fast to get the highest trade-in value. Typically, smart phones can lose up to 65% of their value after just a month of being released...

Notable apps and app updates for Sept. 2, 2016

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they're popular and deserve mention. Here are today's picks.

iOS Apps/Updates

Media Luna has rolled out Gio - The Rolling Ball Game 1.0. In the $1.99 game, players roll the ball over the correct colored cubes to build a path in order to move ahead. Roll the wrong way, and it's time to start over.

Motomo has introduced WoofLinks 1.0. The free app is actually four apps in one: a walk tracker, a connections list, a friend finder, and an instant messenger. WoofLinks has a "WoofDar" tab, sort of like a radar that lets users see what kinds of dogs are currently in a specific area, such as a park or beach, and more.

Apimac has...

AWT News Update: September 2, 2016

Just a reminder -- due to the US Labor Day weekend, the next AWT News Update episode will appear on Tuesday, September 6.

  • Some rather bogus looking "iPhone 7 boxes" from Hungary and Russia show that the devices come with wireless AirPods, but we'll just wait and see. Earlier bogus boxes showed them coming with "EarPods with Lightning Connector".
  • Just in time for the "iPhone 7" announcement, we're starting to hear rumors about the "iPhone 8" or "10th Anniversary iPhone". The big feature? An iris scanner for authentication.
  • Apple's Twitter account may have been finally activated after being set up in 2011, just for the purpose of either live-tweeting or live streaming the event next Wednesday.

Google's Snapseed photo editing app for iOS...

I've been pretty happy with Google's free Snapseed photo editing app for iOS, and today's update to version 2.9 just made me a lot happier. The company added non-destructive RAW support for those who want to edit images from their DSLRs, a new tool for editing faces, and more.

The face editing tool is pretty amazing, adding more clarity to eyes and smoothing skin to an adjustable set of levels. It's really well done -- take a somewhat stark looking portrait and run it through the Face tool, and it's like the subject was given a pro makeup job before the photo was taken. Pores and wrinkles are less obvious, and the entire face looks much smoother.

A new Text tool offers a way to add text and "bubbles" to your photos, all with various opacities, colors, typefaces, and location. There's even a way to invert the text, making the photo show "through" it.

The sample photos below...
