WSJ: iPhone 7 to ditch 16GB storage option in favor...

Following several sketchy reports, The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that the iPhone 7 will indeed ditch the 16GB tier. For the first time ever, the base iPhone model will come in at 32GB. While this was a move largely expected by users, a set of leaked images earlier this year led some to believe that Apple was sticking to the 16GB base.

Hands-on with the Western Digital MyPassport Ultra...

I love how life works out sometimes; last week, I ran out of room on my old 2TB backup drive and at almost the same time, Dennis wrote a post about Western Digital updating its line of inexpensive USB 3.0 hard drives with capacities up to 4TB. When I saw the price ($139.99 introductory sale) I ordered one immediately, and now I've had a chance to test it out. While there are some limitations that are Mac firmware-related in terms of using the Western Digital MyPassport Ultra as one big honkin' drive, there's a lot to like about this product.

Design

WD MyPassport Ultra in "wild berry"

The MyPassport Ultra follows a familiar design for small, inexpensive HDDs. It's about 0.83 inches (20.96mm) thick, 4.33 inches (110.07mm) long, and about 3.21 inches (81.57mm) wide. There's just one little port on the back of the drive where an included USB 3.0 micro-B plug plugs...

U.S. consumption of music continued to grow in the first half of 2016, even as sales of most formats declined, according to Border City Media’s state-of-the-industry data service, BuzzAngle Music. With the pace of audio streaming more than doubling activity tracked over the same period last year, total industry consumption was up by 6.5%.

Interestingly, YouTube and Vevo are no longer the biggest music streaming games around. According to BuzzAngle, on-demand music streams on digital video platforms increased just 23% in the six month period ending in June, compared to on-demand streams by audio music platforms such as Apple Music more than doubled – up 108% year-on-year. The means music streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify have the dominant streaming format for the first time in history.

BuzzAngle says there were 209.4 billion total on-demand streams in the US market in the six-month period. That’s...

Apple granted patent for ‘location support for...

Apple wants your iOS device — mainly your iPhone — to assist you when emergency calls (such as those to 911) are made. The company has applied for a patent (number 9,386,414) for “location support for emergency calls.”

The invention involves a system and method for submitting a location of a mobile device to a public service for providing emergency assistance are described. For example, an iPhone can determine that a user is making an emergency call and can then enable a location determination function of the mobile device and determine a location of the smartphone.

The mobile device can determine the location in multiple attempts, including, in a first time window, attempting to determine a location with low uncertainty and, if the attempt fails, determining a location with high uncertainty in a second time window. The iPhone can then submit the location to a dispatcher through a mobile network operator.

Comcast Will Let Netflix Onto Its X1 Platform

Kara Swisher, reporting for Recode:Cable giant Comcast will allow popular web video streaming service Netflix onto its X1 platform. Netflix also has deals with Apple, Roku and Google's Chromecast; its app is offered on these Internet TV services. It also is embedded in smart televisions. It's an enormous step, given the long and sometimes contentious history between the two companies against a backdrop of increased consumer usage of internet-delivered video. Review: Lifespan Under Desk Treadmill is a solid...

As someone who’s been involved in IT for the last 15 years, sitting while working comes with the territory. Since transitioning from IT to full-time blogging, it’s just been more of the same.

Shooting video tends to get me out of my chair on most days, but I still find myself sitting for inordinate amounts of time. Having a good exercise routine is crucial, as many of my colleagues will attest to, but even with regular exercise, it can still be fatiguing to sit for most of the working day.

This is why I ended up researching, and ultimately acquired, a standing desk. Standing desks are great as I noted in my full review of the UpDesk Power Up, but after a month or so of regularly standing for portions of my work day, I craved something more.

Applebot, the RSS fetcher for the Apple News service, faces problems when it visits websites that uses encryption certificates from the Let’s Encrypt certificate authority, notes Slight Future.

As a relatively new certificate authority (CA), the Mozilla-backed Let’s Encrypt CA isn’t expected to work everywhere on day one. Most issues have been resolved, however, and everyone and their grandmother can now access websites with these encryption certificates like any other website. However, the Applebot gets stuck in a loop and swarm-behavior that resembles a small-scale-denial-of-service-attack when visiting websites that deploy certificates from Let’s Encrypt.

Applebot is the web crawler for Apple, used by products including Siri and Spotlight suggestions. Bots can be thought of as simple,...

When a song in iCloud music is suddenly “no longer...

Kirk McElhearn:

Record labels and artists are free to choose whether to allow their music to be available on streaming services. There are still some holdouts: Garth Brooks, Bob Seger, King Crimson, the Traveling Wilburys, Pete Townshend, and others are totally averse to streaming. And some artists only stream their music on certain services, as exclusives. This includes Taylor Swifts’ 1989, Adele’s 25, Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo, most of Prince’s music, and much more.

But things get complicated when music that you have added to your iCloud Music Library from Apple Music is pulled. Labels can withdraw the right to stream certain songs and albums at any time, but you won’t be notified. You may see albums and songs in your library, but their titles are a slightly lighter color (depending on the view), and their iCloud status is No Longer Available.

Interesting post.

Apple encourages iPhone users to become organ donors

Apple wants to encourage millions of iPhone owners to register as organ donors through a software update that will add an easy sign-up button to the health information app that comes installed on every iPhone, reports CNBC.

CEO Tim Cook told The Associated Press that the lack of organ donors hit home when Apple co-founder Steve Jobs endured an "excruciating" wait for a liver transplant in 2009. Apple is adding the option to enroll in a national donor registry by clicking a button within the iPhone's Health app when iOS 10 is released this fall.

The Health app, introduced with iOS 9, gives you an easy-to-read dashboard of your health and fitness data, including heart rate, calories burned, blood sugar, cholesterol and more. You can also create an emergency card with important health information — for example, your blood...

If you’re like me, you probably have several devices charging at any given time. This requires multiple USB ports and/or chargers, which results in a bit of desktop clutter. Satechi’s $29.99 Multi-Port USB Charging Station helps alleviate this problem.

[Sponsor] Algoriddim: 2016 Apple Design Award Winner

We founded Algoriddim 10 years ago with the mission of making DJing accessible to everyone. Expanding our mission to open the world of DJing to blind users, we recently made djay Pro fully accessible for the visually impaired, removing barriers of musical creativity. We’re incredibly honored to receive an Apple Design Award for the second time, especially since this award was focused on accessibility. We hope this will inspire even more developers to make their software accessible, especially since it requires relatively little effort and can make a big difference in people’s lives.

Apple’s Thunderbolt Display is dead: These are the...

If you’ve been holding out for a new standalone desktop display from Apple, you’re either going to take news of the Thunderbolt Display being discontinued as a sign of good things to come, or as a cue to finally purchase a new 4K or 5K display from someone else. For most, especially considering Apple itself is recommending you purchase a third-party display, the latter option is going to be the more likely.

While Apple didn’t recommend any specific third-party alternatives during its discontinuation announcement of the Thunderbolt display last week, we’ve done the work for you and put together our top picks for the best 4K & 5K displays for Mac available to buy right now.

Mission driven founders

Fred Wilson:

I’ve written many times about how I/we prefer to invest in mission driven founders vs mercenary founders. The former starts a company because they see a problem they feel compelled to fix. The latter starts a company because they see an opportunity to make money.

I love mission driven companies. Those are the ones that solve problems we have as users.

Apple sued in China over showing of war film from...

Apple is being sued by a subsidiary of China’s broadcasting regulator over a propaganda film more than 20 years old, in the latest legal wrangling for the tech giant in China in recent weeks.

A Beijing court says the case has been brought by a production center that alleges that Apple has infringed its exclusive online rights to broadcast a film that depicts Chinese fighting against Japanese soldiers in northern China in the early 1930s.

Google Twists the Knife, Asks For Sanctions Against...

Google isn't done with its victory over Oracle. Court filings suggest that Google will be filing a motion for sanctions against Oracle and its law firm, Orrick, Sutcliffe & Herrington. The Mountain View-based company is apparently irked that Oracle attorney disclosed the financial agreements between Google and Apple. From an Ars Technica report: Speaking in open court, Oracle attorney Annette Hurst said that Google's Android operating system had generated revenue of $31 billion and $22 billion in profit. She also disclosed that Google pays Apple $1 billion to keep Google's search bar on iPhones. "Look at the extraordinary magnitude of commerciality here," Hurst told a magistrate judge as she discussed the revenue figures. The $1 billion figure comes from a revenue-split that gives Apple a portion of the money that Google makes off searches that originate on iPhones. The revenue share figure was 34 percent, "at one point in time," according to Hurst. Google lawyers asked for the...

Opinion: Why I’m resigned to my next MacBook Pro...

Regular readers will know that I still have a 17-inch MacBook Pro as my main computer. It’s almost five years old now, which is a relatively long time in Mac terms, and an absolute age for someone who usually does poorly when it comes to resisting shiny new tech.

But when Apple stopped selling the machine, I’d initially hoped that it was just a temporary measure. The company had only just introduced new Retina displays in the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros, both of which carried a hefty price-tag, and my theory then was that a 17-inch Retina screen wasn’t practical. Yield rates were too low, I supposed, meaning that the cost of a 17-inch model would have been too expensive even for Apple to contemplate.

So I hung in there …

What If We've Got Big Data and Analytics All...

Every once in a while I run into a little company that comes at an existing market as if the folks already in it are idiots -- and sometimes they are right. Here's the thing: What often happens is a company breaks out in a segment, and everyone groups around that company's ideas and emulates them. Few initially stand up and say, "Wait a minute -- what if they're wrong?" Often we get so excited about building the market, we don't realize until much later that the initial attempt at solving a problem doesn't work.

Tech Overtakes Finance Among Top Global Companies

An anonymous reader writes:Technology has stolen a march on finance, with the success of companies such as Alphabet and Microsoft helping the innovative sector surpass the traditional world of financial services among the world's top 100 companies over the past year. Technology firms in the list notched up a combined value of $3bn compared to financial firms' $2.7bn and the $2.6bn value of consumer goods companies. Apple held its position at the top of the ranking, compiled by PwC, despite losing $121bn in market value over the past year to the end of March, and the overall value of the world's top 100 firms falling four per cent -- the most significant decrease since the financial crisis, with a cash value of $668bn. Alphabet closed the gap on Apple in second place, narrowing its market capitalisation from $350bn to just $86bn, while Microsoft rounded out the top three. Facebook was in sixth position while Amazon entered the top 10 for the first time. Tech firms have better...
