Apple looks to expand Siri’s capabilities on the...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 9,668,024) that shows it has bigger plans for Siri, its digital automated assistant, on the Apple TV. For example, it could e used to interact with a television set-top box and control content shown on a TV.

Also, Siri query suggestions can be provided to the user based on media content shown on a display. Other possibilities include: showing stats from a live sporting event, offering content-based suggestions, and analyzing speech input using voice recognition.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that while iPhones, iPads and Macs have benefitted from Siri, many other user devices lack such convenient control mechanisms. Of course, there is limited Siri support for the Apple TV thanks to the Siri Remote.

However, Apple says that user interactions with media control devices (e.g., televisions, television set-top boxes, cable boxes, gaming devices, streaming media devices, digital video recorders, etc.) can be complicated...

Voila! That's it.

(This how-to is based on my experiences and info on Apple's support pages — where the images sometimes come from.)

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: Executives from some of the globe's leading technology firms are demanding that Texas not adopt "discriminatory" bathroom legislation. The tech companies have aligned themselves with critics of the bill who believe the legislation is unfair to the transgender community. "As large employers in the state, we are gravely concerned that any such legislation would deeply tarnish Texas' reputation as open and friendly to businesses and families," the companies wrote Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. "Our ability to attract, recruit and retain top talent, encourage new business relocations, expansions and investment, and maintain our economic competitiveness would all be negatively affected." Pending Texas Senate legislation would prohibit transgender people in Texas from using restrooms matching their gender identities. The House on...

Swift Publisher 5: Powerful and easy desktop...

The 1990s seemed to be the heyday of desktop publishing software, with everything from high-end Mac apps like PageMaker and Quark XPress to less expensive and capable apps from a number of developers. Today, it seems like most desktop publishing apps are either too complex and costly for most casual users, or don't have the ability to do "real" layout work. Swift Publisher 5 from BeLight Software (US$19.99 for a single license) is a pleasant exception to the rule, supplying power to do a lot of pro-level desktop publishing while keeping the price down and being easy to use.

The app costs $19.99 for a single-user license or $35.99 for a family pack that can be used on up to five Macs. While Swift Publisher 5 comes with plenty of clip art and fonts built-in, an "Extras" pack that includes 40,000 more images and 100 more fonts can be added, making the single-user price $29.99 and the...

Analyst: nope, you won't have to wait for an ‘...

Despite some predictions that the next generation of iPhone will ship later than the usual September time frame, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty says in a note to clients -- as noted by Barron’s -- that there's a “limited risk of a significantly delayed launch" for the "iPhone 8" (shown in fanciful mock-ups).

She comes to this conclusion after visiting Asia and meeting with iPhone suppliers there. The iPhone 8 is expected to support augmented-reality functions, and those likely require special 3D-sensing components. That and the iPhone’s processor “appear to be bottlenecks that will limit initial supply, but are unlikely to delay the launch beyond the September/October timeframe,” Huberty says.

But if it is delayed, she says it will be worth it. Augmented reality (AR) is the killer application, Huberty wrote, and could help drive more upgrades and sway...

Halide

It takes some real grit to create a new iPhone camera app in 2017. To say that “camera apps” constitute a crowded category in the App Store is an understatement, and every camera app is competing against the system’s built-in Camera app, which is (a) very good, and (b) has built-in advantages — like being accessible from the lock screen by swiping right — that third-party apps can’t match.

Halide — a brand-new iPhone camera app designed by Sebastiaan de With and developed by Ben Sandofsky — rises to the challenge.

The first question Halide needs to answer is why should anyone even consider it instead of the system’s Camera app. The answer is that the Camera app has a wide range of responsibilities: separate modes for time-lapse, slow-motion video, regular video, regular photos, square photos, and panoramic photos. Camera also has to be usable by all...

Toshiba’s NAND flash memory, needed for the Switch, is in short supply. It's being scooped up to make the current iPhone 7, the anticipated “iPhone 8” and other smartphones.

“Demand for our NAND flash memory has been overwhelmingly greater than supply, and the situation is likely to stay for the rest of this year," a Toshiba spokeswoman told the WSJ. The situation is unlikely to resolve itself in 2017, she said.

LG wants a piece of Samsung’ OLED iPhone screen...

LG Display is reportedly making a $3.6 billion investment in an OLED factory to challenge Samsung for the chance to make iPhone screens. Samsung is currently the only OLED supplier to the iPhone launching this fall.

LG Display will construct the lines for production next year with smartphones as the priority ahead of TVs, which reverses the original product production order LG had for the facility, according to Korea IT News. OLEDs are also more expensive and difficult to manufacture than LED screens, and the reason the “iPhone 8” may have supply issues, according to some pundits.

OLED is made up of lots of tiny LEDs, each emitting their own light and colors. They don’t require an “always on” backlight, as each LED can be on or off as needed, and emitting the right kind of light needed to create the images you’re seeing.

OLED technology is used in high end smartphones today, such...

Next high-end iMac could be caffeinated with a...

I really want to see a new iMac announced at next week's Apple Worldwide Developer Conference and be available immediately. However, I suspect the next gen all-in-one won’t ship until September. If so, a high-end model could sport Intel Coffee Lake processors.

Intel says one of its eighth-generation "Coffee Lake" processors (the Core X- Series) delivered more than a 30% performance boost over an equivalent seventh-generation "Kaby Lake" processor in recent testing. I suspect the processor will power the next rev of the iMac if they are available, as expected, in the second half of the year -- and if Apple can get early supplies, as it has in the past with new Intel chips.

“The new Intel Core X-series processor family is our most scalable, accessible and powerful desktop platform ever,” Intel corporate vice president...

Here’s a great name for a tablet: iPad

Ryonghung, a North Korean technology company, recently announced a new tablet. It looks a lot like the weird, firewalled computers the country has produced in the past, with the addition of one curious new feature: the name. It’s called… the iPad.

I have no idea how Apple is even supposed to fight this one.

Pixelmator Team tease a brand new Mac app

This is the biggest thing that we’ve ever done. The most innovative, beautiful and powerful thing that we’ve ever done. And it’s also the most Mac thing that we’ve ever done! This is what the legendary Pixelmator Team has been secretly and incredibly passionately working on for 5 whole years.

This totally caught my attention today. I love the folks at Pixelmator and the great apps they make, so if they’ve been working on something this long, you know it’s going to be big.

Android creator Andy Rubin makes new smartphone

The Essential Phone, brought to us by the person who created Android, is finally ready for the spotlight. It’s an incredibly audacious and ambitious project, with an outlandish screen and the beginnings of a modular ecosystem.

Rubin has been trying to one-up Apple for years but could never quite pull it off. We’ll see how this works out, but I suspect once Apple outlines its next iOS and iPhone hardware later this year, interest in Rubin’s “Essential Phone” will wane.

PC Market Could Return To Growth in 2019

IDC's latest Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker offers new insight as to why the firm believes the PC market is set for a growth period a few years from now. From a report: Detachable tablets such as Microsoft's Surface line and Apple's iPad Pro will lead the growth as consumers have turned away from laptops in favor of these more versatile computing devices. Last year, 21.5 million of these devices were shipped and the number of units sold could reach as high as 45.9 million in 2021. Notebook computers and mobile workstations are another category that will see continued growth with shipments rising from 156.8 million units in 2016 to 163.7 million by the year 2021. Desktop computers are still decreasing in popularity and that trend is likely to continue with their sales predicted to decrease by 15 million a year leading up to 2021.

IDC: ‘next round of iPhones isn’t likely to...

According to a new forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, worldwide smartphone shipments are expected to rebound slightly in 2017 with expected growth of 3% over the previous year. And things are looking good for Apple's iPhone.

In 2016, year-over-year growth was 2.5%, marking the lowest growth the industry has ever experienced. With several major devices entering the market this year, IDC anticipates shipment volumes will grow to 1.52 billion in 2017. And the research group expects this momentum to carry into 2018, when smartphone shipments are forecast to grow 4.5% year over year, fueled by improved economic conditions in many emerging markets and a full year of new iPhone shipments from Apple.

Coming off the first year in which iPhone shipments declined, expectations are that 2017 volumes...

15-inch MacBook Pro deliveries slip to June 5 (or...

As noted by MacRumors, Apple has updated its online store to indicate that 15-inch MacBook Pro orders are now estimated for free delivery between June 5-8 in the U.S. This makes sense, as new laptops are predicted to be unveiled at next week's Apple Worldwide Developer Conference.

There are also rumors that the MacBook Air will be updated, though the Sellers Research Firm (that’s me) is dubious. Apple’ 13-inch MacBook Pro models remain in stock for delivery as early as “next day” in the U.S. and several other countries.

The 28th annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will be held at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. The conference will run June 5-9 and will focus on the latest versions of macOS, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS.

Apple patent is for a head-mounted display for AR...

Apple is at least considering a head-mounted display (HMD) for augmented reality (AR) purposes, as evidenced by a newly granted patent (number 9,667,954). It involves a device and techniques for projecting a source image in a HMD having a left and a right display for projecting a left and right images viewable by the left and right eyes.

The source image has right, left, top, and bottom edges and is processed to generate left image data for the left display and right image data for the right display. The left image data includes the left edge, but not the right edge, of the source image and the right image data includes the right edge, but not the left edge, of the source image. The right image data is presented on the right display and the left image data is presented on the left display.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that some HMDs can be used to view a see-through image imposed upon a real world view; in other words, AR. This is accomplished by reflecting the...
