Apple introduces new $29 screen repair tier to...

Buried inside all of Apple’s announcements today were some notable changes to the company’s AppleCare+ repair program. While Apple has long charged $99 for repairs of current-gen devices and $79 for previous-gen repairs, the company today announced that there is now a flat $99 charge for all incidental repairs under AppleCare+. For one of the most common repairs, however, there’s a nice pricing improvement…

Apple Announces Apple Watch Series 2 With GPS, Water...

In addition to two shiny new iPhones, Apple has announced its second generation Apple Watch today, calling it the Apple Watch Series 2. The appearance is nearly identical to the original Apple Watch, with the exception of the new (optional) ceramic build material. The biggest changes can be found under the hood. The Verge reports: "The built-in GPS allows the device to perform mapping on its own, no phone required. The company also upgraded the processor in the device, now called the S2, and the display. The Series 2 has a dual-core processor Apple says is 50 percent faster than its predecessor, with double the graphics performance thanks to a new GPU. The display is now 50 percent brighter as well. The company also renewed its longstanding partnership with Nike with a special Nike+ version of the Apple Watch. It resembles a fusion of an Apple product with Nike's discontinued FuelBand fitness tracker, and it's designed for runners and workout junkies. The aluminum sport version of...

Don’t worry, Square’s card reader works with Apple’s...

Square’s popular magnetic stripe card reader plugs into an iPhone headphone jack, giving small business owners who would otherwise go cash only the ability to accept debit and credit cards. But Apple just officially killed the headphone jack, so what’s a business owner to do?

I reached out to Square spokeswoman Semonti Stephens, who said the Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter (like the one Apple is including in the iPhone 7 box when it ships Sept. 16) will work with Square’s reader. But it’s unclear how many people will actually need to use an adapter. The Venn diagram of business owners that don’t support chip cards—which Square accepts with a separate, wireless card reader that doesn’t use the headphone jack—and iPhone 7 buyers is probably pretty small.

iPads get price cuts and increased storage

As noted by 9to5Mac, Apple has refreshed its iPad lineup by updating storage capacities to mirror that of the iPhone 7: 32GB, 128GB and 256GB tiers rather than 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB.

The iPad Pro has the most drastic pricing. The 9.7-inch iPad Pro models are $599 for 32GB, $699 for 128GB, and $799 for 256GB. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro costs $799 for 32GB, 128GB for $899 and 256GB for $999.

The iPad Air 2 is now available in 32GB and 128GB storage options for $399 and $499, respectively. The iPad mini 4 is the same storage options and the same price points. The iPad mini 2 is now only offered in a 32GB configuration for $269.

Sounds good! AirPods, Lightning EarPods, and new...

Apple today reiterated its belief that "Music is in our DNA" by making a series of announcements that really point to the company's commitment to sound. Not only do the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus include stereo speakers built-in, but they'll also come with new Lightning EarPods. The biggest news, though, was the introduction of wireless AirPods and new Beats wireless headphones.

The AirPods (seen above) look oddly like a pair of EarPods with the cables broken off. Those long "probes" (for lack of a better name) contain beamforming microphones that apparently do a very good job at picking up voice tones. Inside each AirPod is a custom Apple W1 chip to provide up to 5 hours of battery life in each 'pod, allow use of one or both AirPods, and switch between any number...

Apple Pay is coming to Japan along with the iPhone 7

The newly announced iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch Series 2 will bring customers in Japan the ability to use Apple Pay, Apple’s mobile payment service, beginning in October.

Users will be able to commute and pay for everyday items with Suica from JR East, and make private credit and prepaid card purchases in stores, apps and on the web with a single touch. Apple is also introducing support for transit in Japan with Maps in iOS 10, so commuters can find ride details, including fare breakdowns that automatically show Suica pricing right on their device, making their commute more seamless and simpler than ever.

Apple Pay is accepted anywhere Suica is available, so users can make quick everyday purchases and buy or reload a Suica card or commuter pass, all with their iPhone, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook. Japan’s major financial brands will also support Apple Pay, so shoppers can make purchases in many of the country's largest stores, at neighborhood shops and...

'Fastest smartphone chip ever,' the A10...

At the heart of every Apple iPhone is usually an upgraded chip, and this year’s iPhone 7 is no different: the A10 Fusion, which Apple executives claimed is the fastest smartphone chip ever.

‘If you’ve been paying attention, you know that Apple’s chip team has been killing it in performance,” said

Apple has an existing license from ARM, the British smartphone chip designer that was recently acquired by Softbank. Rather than licensing a fixed design, Apple’s deal apparently permits tweaking for its own purposes, allowing the company to optimize it for new iPhone releases.

Apple’s new A10 Fusion chip is orders of magnitude faster than the original iPhone.

Two cameras in iPhone 7 Plus allow synthetic zoom,...

The new iPhone 7 Plus introduced at Apple's September product event sports two cameras, set closely side by side, as was widely rumored. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, described the system, which pairs a 28mm wide-angle lens, just as in the iPhone 7, with a new 56mm telephoto lens.

Apple will release the phone with hardware-based 1x and 2x zoom, and a software synthesized zoom between the two. An improved digitally interpolated zoom mode handles images above 2x to 10x. A software update that will ship later will add a Portrait mode that creates photos that look like they came from much more expensive digital cameras.

iOS 10 and watchOS 3 are coming on September 13

At the Apple iPhone 7 event on Wednesday, the company revealed that the ship date for iOS 10 and watchOS 3 is September 13.
The free update is for users of the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch.

Following the Apple event, the company released to developers the golden master of iOS 10 and watchOS 3, as well as the GMs of macOS Sierra and tvOS 10. When beta software turns to golden master, it is usually considered the final version that will be eventually released to the general public.

When iOS 10 is officially released, it will be available to iOS users through Software Update in the Settings app. It’s a good idea to perform a backup before installing the new operating system. In case you have problems with iOS 10, you can always revert to the backup.

Apple pushes new EarPods and AirPods for a future...

Apple will try to ease the pain of killing the headphone jack in the iPhone 7, shipping the new smartphone with Lightning-enabled EarPods and an analog adapter.

“The reason to move on ... it really comes down to one word: Courage,” Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller said during the company’s September news event.

Schiller explained that abandoning the analog headphone jack allows Apple to make room for various other technological improvements, such as brighter displays, faster processors, and the iPhone 7’s stereo speakers. The Lightning connection also allows for new headphone features, he said, including adaptive noise cancellation and higher-quality audio without an external power source.

Pokémon Go is coming to Apple Watch to get you...

A version of Pokémon Go is coming to the Apple Watch, together with  a new feature that better tracks how far you need to walk before your Pokémon “eggs” hatch within the game.

Pokémon Go for Apple Watch will ship before the end of the year, John Hanke, the chief executive of Pokémon Go developer Niantic Labs, said onstage Wednesday at Apple’s iPhone 7 launch event in San Francisco.

Pokémon Go, the hit mobile game for iOS and Android, has been downloaded over 500 million times worldwide,  Hanke said. The game uses augmented reality to help players discover Pokémon in the wild, allowing users to “see” Pokémon superimposed over real-world objects.

Mario's coming to the iPhone

One of the first big announcements to come out of Apple's September product reveal was the news that Nintendo will release its first smartphone game on the iPhone.

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the game, Super Mario Run, before being joined by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto who provided details about the game.

The gameplay has Mario always running to the right and jumping when the screen is pressed. A longer press causes Mario to jump higher. Miyamoto said the game can easily be played with one hand, allowing gameplay while simultaneously riding the subway, say, or eating a hamburger.

Mario will make his first official appearance on the iPhone.

The new Apple Watch is ‘swim proof’ and has built-in...

Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, came on-stage today at the company’s special media event, to introduce the new Apple Watch Series 2, which has been completely reengineered to be swim proof.”

You can wear it while you’re swimming or surfing. It’s rated water resistant to 50 meters. The speaker itself has been jiggered to reject water, says Williams. He adds that the new smartwatch isn’t just for occasional swimmers, but for those who swim everyday. For this reason, Apple is also introducing Open Water Swim and Pool Swim apps.

The Apple Watch 2 adds a dual core processor that’s up to 50% faster and a new GPU that’s two times faster. It packs a new display that’s up to two times brighter than before at 1,000 nits. Williams says it’s the brightest screen Apple has ever shipped and makes a big difference when you’re looking at the display outside.

The new Apple Watch also adds built-in GPS. Williams says developers can take advance of the new GPS...

Apple Watch Series 2 unveiled with swim-proof...

Almost two years after the Apple Watch was first unveiled in 2014, Apple has finally pulled the curtain back on its second-generation smartwatch.

The Apple Watch Series 2 with swim-proof capabilities and built-in GPS was unveiled during Apple’s event on Wednesday. This new model has a redesigned speaker to make it water-resistant down to 50 meters. Other than that, this updated smartwatch looks near-identical to the first Apple Watch, which was only splash-proof.

The Apple Watch Series 2 comes in conjunction with watchOS 3, which Apple first unveiled this summer at WWDC. The latest iteration of watchOS 3 makes apps launch seven times faster, lets you write with your fingertip to create messages, and activity-sharing so you can compete with your friends.

Apple reveals new “swim-proof” Apple Watch Series 2

SAN FRANCISCO—About a year and a half after releasing the first Apple Watch, Apple has announced a second-generation model: the Apple Watch Series 2. The watch's biggest new feature is its swim-proof design; the device is water-resistant to up to 50 meters.

Apple explained that the hardest part of making a device like the Apple Watch water-resistant is the speaker, since it presents an entryway for water to get into the watch. The company designed the Apple Watch Series 2's speaker to eject water that comes into it, so it won't stay inside the watch and potentially damage the internals. In addition to specially designing the water-rejecting speaker, Apple also developed two custom swimming workouts for those who swim regularly as part of an exercise routine. It's quite hard to...

iWork now supports real-time collaboration

At Wednesday’s iPhone 7 event, Apple announced the ability of real-time collaboration for its iWork apps. The feature allows users to work on a Pages document, Numbers spreadsheet, and Keynote presentation at the same time.

During the iWork demonstration, Keynote was used to show that multiple users were editing a presentation during the event. A Participants list in Keynote showed the users working on the presentation, each represented with a different color.

Apple said that the real-time collaboration feature works across platforms on the Mac, iPad, and iPhone.

Why this matters: The inclusion of real-time collaboration makes the app suite more competitive with Google Docs, which has had real-time collaboration for some time. However, many iPad users find the iPad implementation of Google Docs less than optimal. Real-time collaboration is a feature many iWork have wanted for a long time.

After a long, laborious process and a lot of scraping paint splotches from the floor, the office space in my new apartment is ready for me to move into, and I will soon no longer need to write this column from my kitchen table. So, I'm in the market for a desk.
With my nascent interest in standing desks, the Gaze Desk seems a decent option. It switches between standing and seated modes with a button press or adjustment through an app. The dual lift function means you can adjust the height of the monitor independently of the rest of the desk.

∞ How the one year, $99 Apple Music coupons work

Earlier today, I linked to the Walmart offer for one year of Apple Music at $99.

I went to the site and made the purchase. I got an email, immediately, telling me that the purchase was made. About an hour later, I got a second email with a link to redeem the offer.

I clicked the link, was taken to iTunes, entered my Apple ID password, and clicked to redeem the code automatically entered from the Walmart page. I was then presented with a button that said “Extend My Apple Music Membership”. I clicked the button and got a message telling me my Apple Music subscription was extended through the end of September, 2017.

More importantly, the message said my subscription would automatically be renewed at the $99 rate....

Reuters reports: The iPhone 7 is expected to make its global debut on Wednesday, but many consumers and investors are already setting their sights on Apple's 2017 version of the popular gadget, hoping for more significant advances. At its annual product launch in San Francisco on Wednesday, the world's most valuable publicly traded company is expected to reveal an iPhone without a headphone jack, paving the way for wireless headphones, a touch-sensitive home button that vibrates, double-lens cameras for the larger Plus edition and other incremental improvements. Apple typically gives its main product, which accounts for more than half of its revenue, a big makeover every other year and the last major redesign was the iPhone 6, in 2014. The modest updates suggest that this cycle will be three years.
