If you were in any doubt why Apple was going to so much trouble to deepen its foothold in India, new figures from Counterpoint Research provide the answer. While the global smartphone market grew only 3% last year, smartphone shipments in India grew by 18%.

The growing middle class in the country also meant that, for the first time, there were no Indian brands in the top five as consumers start to spend more on their handsets. There was also good news for Apple …

The GoPower Watch should go with you if you’re...

Kanex’s $99.95 GoPower Watch is a portable, cordless charging solution for the Apple Watch. The key words are “portable” and “cordless.”

It’s small (about 3 inches square and one inch tall) and only weighs 4.9 ounces, so it’s easy to toss it into a purse or travel bag. It’s an Apple Certified magnetic charging dock that uses the same inductive charging connector that comes with the Apple Watch.

With a 4,000 mAh battery capacity, the GoPower Watch can charge you Apple Watch up to six times before it needs to be recharged. That makes it very handy when you’re on multi-day trips.

You can even charge your smartwatch and an iPhone simultaneously. Just plug in your Lightning cable into the USB port of the GoPower Watch. You have to press the button on the side of the charger to start power flowing to your devices. An LED indicator displays battery levels and charge status. Since the Apple Watch lays flat...

Software Engineers Are the Heroes of New Computer...

Tekla Perry writes: The Computer History Museum set out to turn the spotlight on software engineers and show how they are the changing the world. But what projects to feature in the new, permanent exhibit [called "Make Software: Change the World!"] (that opens to the public this Saturday, January 28th)? The curators whittled a list of 100 technologies that owe their existence to breakthroughs in software down to seven: Photoshop, the MP3, the MRI, car crash simulation, Wikipedia, texting, and World of Warcraft. They expect these choices to be debated at length, in particular, World of Warcraft, but hope the exhibition elevates the prominence of software engineers and gets more than a few middle schoolers talking about targeting their career plans in that direction.

iOS 10.3 with Find My AirPods enters public beta

Just two days after Apple unleashed iOS 10.3 to developers, members of the public beta program have access to it too. Anyone who wants to kick the tires of the first public beta can join the beta program by visiting beta.apple.com and signing in with your Apple ID.

The big selling point of iOS 10.3 is a great new feature for AirPods owners, letting them locate a misplaced AirPod by firing up the Find My iPhone app and having the AirPods play a sound. The sound plays if the AirPods are anywhere in Bluetooth range of any of your Apple devices (think Macs, iPads, iPhones) signed into the same iCloud account. If your AirPods are out of range or totally dead, the Find My iPhone app can let you know where they were last “seen” by Bluetooth. It’s pretty handy.

How to turn the 2016 MacBook Pro into a Windows...

While they’ve existed before the most recent MacBook Pro, the surge of interest in external GPUs is largely thanks to the implementation of Thunderbolt 3 in the latest Mac hardware. As we’ve shown in a previous post, an eGPU can make a significant performance difference, turning an otherwise graphically pedestrian MacBook Pro into a competent gaming machine.

In our previous tutorial, we showed you how to wield an AMD RX 480 in macOS. While that solution yielded definite benefits, it was also hindered by difficulties caused by macOS itself.

It should come as no surprise that the setup process and support with Windows is, in some ways, quite a bit better than using an eGPU with macOS. That’s not to say that you should run out and buy a Windows laptop if you want to play the latest games requiring a more powerful GPU. Instead,...

Apple achieves an iPhone landmark in India

According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service, the smartphone shipments in India grew 18% annually in 2016 compared to the global smartphone market which grew 3%.     Apple achieved a landmark with the iPhone, crossing 2.5 million units in a calendar year, with one-third of its total shipment coming alone from the record fourth quarter driven by seasonality and the launch of iPhone 7.

Apple captured 10th position in the smartphone rankings during the fourth quarter of 2016, according to Counterpoint. However, it led the premium segment (above US$450) with 62% market share.

Chinese brands OPPO, vivo, Lenovo and Xiaomi continued to grow at the expense of Samsung and Indian brands. Their success was attributable to a variety of factors including strong marketing and channel push, as well as better access to components that were in limited supply. As a result Chinese brands...

Google Maps for iOS now offers live Popular Times...

There's a war going on, and it's between the Apple Maps app and Google Maps. Yesterday's update of the Google Maps iOS app gave it the lead in the battle with the addition of a new live integration of the Popular Times feature.

Popular Times is nothing new -- it's been available since 2015, showing users the times to avoid going to popular places. It does so by taking anonymized GPS data from users to see how many people are at a particular location. The update now adds live data to the mix, showing iOS users if a place is less or more crowded than usual.

There's also a new bit of data that shows how long people usually spend at a location, which can be helpful if you're looking to squeeze in a quick lunch at a popular spot. Google Maps also added  support for quick access to addresses that have been copied to the iOS clipboard.

How to download a Windows disk image for free

OS X Daily:

Did you know you can download a Windows 10 disc image free from Microsoft? This is seemingly little known, but yes you can download a complete legitimate Windows 10 ISO without registering or even having a product key, and you can install and run the entirety of Windows 10 using the image too.

I have not done this, but good to know, especially if you want to do a Boot Camp install to run a single application or test. Bookmark and pass along.

Dan Aykroyd’s tribute to Carrie Fisher

Dan Aykroyd, writing about his romantic relationship with Carrie Fisher:

While in Chicago we obtained blood tests for compatibility from an East Indian female doctor. Contemplating marriage, I gave Carrie a sapphire ring and subsequently in the romance she gave me a Donald Roller Wilson oil painting of a monkey in a blue dress next to a tiny floating pencil, which I kept for years until it began to frighten my children.

The writeup is a bit bizarre, but really captures something of Carrie’s spirit.

Apple Set To Join Amazon, Google, Facebook in AI...

Apple will take a significant step toward disclosing more of its artificial intelligence research this week by becoming a member of a non-profit AI research consortium founded by five of the tech industry's biggest players, reports Bloomberg. Last September, Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and IBM publicly announced The Partnership on AI, an organisation established "to study and formulate best practices, to advance the public's understanding of AI, and to serve as an open platform for discussion and engagement about AI and its influences on people and society." Apple released its first AI paper to the public last year.

Apple said to join Amazon, IBM, Microsoft, Google,...

From the partnership page:

In support of the mission to benefit people and society, the Partnership on AI intends to conduct research, organize discussions, share insights, provide thought leadership, consult with relevant third parties, respond to questions from the public and media, and create educational material that advance the understanding of AI technologies including machine perception, learning, and automated reasoning.

As much as we’ve learned about artificial intelligence, we’re still on the steepest part of the learning curve. We’re still working out the mechanics, just barely touching on the important philosophical issues.

Glad to hear news that Apple looks to be joining this group. Keep an eye on...

Smart Home Diary: Getting started with HomeKit

London is my favorite place in the world, but there are a few downsides to living here – and one of those is that some tech takes a while to cross the Atlantic. HomeKit was one example. Different plug sockets and using 240v instead of 110v means that we needed to wait for UK-specific versions of HomeKit-compatible kit.

I also had various items of non-compatible Smart Home technology that made it a little financially painful to go all-in on HomeKit. I was, for example, an early adopter of WeMo, with a socket switch for each of my standard lamps, all of which needed to be replaced.

But no self-respecting gadget lover could pass up the opportunity for voice-control – and that, plus the greater capabilities, eventually made the switch to HomeKit irresistible. This piece doubles as a diary of my own experiences and a how-to guide to getting started with HomeKit …

Chrome, Firefox start warning users when websites...

The war on insecure webpages has begun, and Mozilla fired the first shot.

Recently, Mozilla rolled out Firefox 51 to its mainstream user base. With the new release comes an insecure warning on any page that offers a login form over an HTTP connection instead of HTTPS. Chrome plans to follow suit with version 56, expected to be released to mainstream users on Tuesday, January 31, as Ars Technica first pointed out.

HTTP uses an open, unencrypted connection between you and the website you’re visiting that could be intercepted by anyone monitoring traffic between you and the site. For that reason, it’s never a good idea to share login or credit card information over an HTTP connection. Most major sites offer the encrypted version—HTTPS—but every now and then you’ll come across a site that doesn’t.

Apple granted a patent for its Find My Friends...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 20170026796) for “identifying and locating users on a mobile network.” It involves the iOS app/service, Find My Friends.

With Find My Friends, you can follow and track folks with your iPhone or iPad. You can also share your location with the people you choose. Location is determined using GPS in the iOS device when Location Services are turned on. Notifications appear when a user requests another user to see where they are or is turned on through the message application. It can also be accepted through Facebook sharing options. Find My Friends can be turned on and off at any time.

Here’s Apple’s summary of the invention: “A system and method of locating ‘friends’ having mobile devices connected to a network and associated with a user account is disclosed. The method includes sending a request to a mobile device, the mobile device determining its present geographic location and responding to the requestor with this information...

Qualcomm CEO slams Apple for 'without merit...

Senior executives at Qualcomm slammed Apple on Wednesday for lawsuits filed in the last week alleging the smartphone chip-maker significantly overcharged it for licensing fees.

The spat saw cases filed last Friday in California and this week in Beijing and were top of mind when Qualcomm conducted an earnings call with analysts on Wednesday.

For 15 minutes, Qualcomm executives criticized Apple’s moves, calling the two lawsuits “without merit” and accused the iPhone-maker of trying to use them as a way to reduce the royalties the iPhone maker pays to Qualcomm.

Apple to incorporate SiriKit functionality into...

Per new developer documentation released on Tuesday, it looks like you’ll be able to control Siri via your Apple Watch in order to interact with third-party applications.

The feature is one of a handful of enhancements expected to arrive in the upcoming operating system, watchOS 3.2, which will also introduce a “Theater Mode” option.

With the update, you’ll be able to mute the sound on your Apple Watch or disable the device’s feature to wake the screen when you raise your wrist. This should allow you to be less intrusive to others when watching a movie or being in a darkened room where you’re expected to keep quiet.

The SiriKit feature, which is making its way to watchOS, will allow you to speak commands to your Apple Watch.

SiriKit was already available on iPhone and iPad in iOS 10, but Apple Watch may be the most useful platform for the functionality.

According to Apple’s release notes on watchOS 3.2, not all apps will be able to take...

iVisor Pro is a fine accessory for protecting your...

Moshi has released a new version (Pro 15) of its iVisor screen protector for the 2016 MacBook Pro. If you’ve shelled out for the pricey laptop, this $38.95 accessory can help protect — and enhance — its display.

The iVisor Pro 15 is a washable, reusable matte screen protector that reduces glare while delivering clarity with bubble-free installation. Moshi had me at “bubble-free installation,” since I’m apparently incapable of installing an iPhone or iPad screen protector without leaving bubbles — and I HATE bubbles on my devices’ displays.

The thin film has an adhesive bezel and keeps the screen from getting covered with fingerprints and smudges. It also provides a non-glare matte finish to reduce reflections.

You should clean your MacBook Pro’s screen thoroughly before installing the iVisor Pro 15. It’s a bit tricky to align it properly with the laptop screen. The first time...

It’s that time again–time to tie that tie and tighten your money belt. Next week, Apple will once again reveal its quarterly earnings report, leading to a lot of Kremlinology, the parsing of numbers, and a bumping up or down of the Apple stock price.

The results will arrive on January 31 at about 1:30 p.m. Pacific, followed at 2 p.m. by the usual phone call between Apple execs (generally CEO Tim Cook and CFO Luca Maestri) and a collection of analysts.

A tech industry body established to agree best practice in the use of artificial intelligence had one notable omission in the impressive list of member companies. IBM, Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Amazon all signed up, but Apple didn’t.

Previously, we looked at how to set a default view in the macOS Sierra Finder. In the four Finder views, there are additional ways to customize how your items are displayed. Sort items, arrange icons, and resize columns.

Your settings for sorting and arranging items in a folder apply until you change them. For example, if you sort your Documents folder by Date Added, the next time you view your Documents folder, it’s sorted by Date Added.

To sort items, in any view, choose View > Show View Options, click the Sort By pop-up menu, then choose the sort order, such as Date Modified or Name. In List view and Cover Flow, move the pointer over the column name you want to sort by, then click it. Click the column name again to reverse the sort order.
