Serfing on the Giants’ Farms

Josh Marshall has a great post describing in detail the control Google wields over the advertising industry, “A Serf on Google’s Farm”:

But here’s where the rubber really meets the road. The publishers
use DoubleClick. The big advertisers use DoubleClick. The big
global advertising holding companies use Doubleclick. Everybody at
every point in the industry is wired into DoubleClick. Here’s how
they all play together. The adserving (Doubleclick) is like the
road. (Adexchange) is the biggest car on the road. But only
AdExchange gets full visibility into what’s available. (There’s
lot of details here and argument about just what Google does and
doesn’t know. But trust me on this. They keep the key information
to themselves. This isn’t a suspicion. It’s the model.) So Google
owns the road and gets first look at what’s on the road. So not
only...

macOS High Sierra Developer Beta 9 now available

Yesterday, Apple made the ninth beta version of both iOS 11 and tvOS 11 available to developers. Today, the company followed up with the latest (ninth) developer beta of macOS 10.13 High Sierra.

It's quite likely that this will be the last beta version of macOS High Sierra, as the new OS is likely to ship on or around September 12 -- the day of Apple's product announcement event. However, one feature may not be available for all users at launch time, and that's the highly-anticipated Apple File System (APFS).

Recent articles note that while APFS is enabled by default on those devices like the MacBook that use solid state drives (SSDs) for storage, issues have apparently come up with the migration of HFS+ formatted hard disk drives and Fusion drives. Apple could possibly delay the ship date of macOS High Sierra, or just ensure that at least for now, HDDs and...

Apple's leadership page is only now reflecting Federighi's role as head of Siri, but the transition has been apparent for several months, based on recent interviews and stage appearances at Apple's keynotes.

China's Pisen sues Apple for ‘suspected...

Another day, another lawsuit. China-based Guangdong Pisen Electronics has filed a lawsuit with the Beijing Intellectual Property Court against Apple for the “suspected engagement in monopolistic behavior.”

Apple's MFi (Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad) compulsory certification is a logo using permission for peripherals made by the tech giant’s licensed accessory manufacturers. This hacks off Pisen, China's largest accessory manufacturer, which claims that data cables are only transmission channels for data and current and are less technically inclined. In other words, the company claims the MFi compulsory certification is just a superfluous toll station set up on the channel.

Pisen is claiming a compensation for economic loss of 1 yuan (less than an U.S. dollar) from Apple. The company said its economic loss is, in fact, much more than 1 yuan; however, it only claimed a symbolic restitution from the perspective of the protection of consumer choice and a company's right to...

macOS and iOS market share down in August

According to the latest market share survey from NetMarketShare, the market share for both macOS and iOS was down last month. Which is a bit strange, since Macs continue to defy the industry sales trend for traditional computers and iPhone sales are strong.

According to the report, among desktop operating systems, macOS had 5.94% of the global market share in August down from from 6.02% percent in July (that’s global market share; in the U.S. it’s over 13%). April 2016’s 9.2% was an all-time high, according to NetMarketShare’s measurements. Windows remains dominant with 90.70% as of August.

iOS had 32.93% of the mobile operating system market share in August, down from 33.09% in July. This compares to 64.76% for Android, 0.81% for Windows Phone, and 0.59% for Java ME. The all-time high for iOS was in July 2012 with 65.94%.

These days, keeping up with games can be a full-time job. So how do you separate the signal from the noise, the wheat from the chaff, the Temple Runs from the Temple Jumps? Allow us to help by regularly selecting a game You Should Play.

When it comes to mobile gaming, immersion isn’t usually high on the list of priorities—it’s pretty hard to lose yourself in a 4.7-inch screen, no matter how engaging the story is. And that’s why games that are able to transport you to another world—or rather, multiple other worlds—are so impressive. Future Macs may adjust their audio based on where...

Future Macs may adjust their audio depending on where you’re sitting or standing — and based on how many folks are in a room. Apple has filed for a patent (number 20170249122) for “devices with enhanced audio.”

The patent involves a system for enhancing audio including a Mac and an output device. The Mac includes a sensor configured to determine a user location relative to the computer. The sensor is also configured to gather environment data corresponding to an environment of the computer.

The Mac also includes a processor in communication with the sensor and configured to process the user location and the environment data and adjust at least one of an audio output or a video output. The output device is in communication with the processor and is configured to output at least one of the audio output or the video output.

In other words, the system may rely on sensors and imaging devices to interpolate user inputs so that the user doesn’t have to physically...

The concept of the show relates to morning television chat shows, pitched by HBO’s former head of drama. A previous report said Apple has budgeted a billion dollars towards original content efforts for the coming year.

iOS 11 beta hits uncharted territory

Two things about this detailed chart of iOS beta releases since the days of iPhone OS:

  1. The chart itself. Great work by Will Hains pulling this together. He’s been doing it for quite some time.

  2. Yesterday’s iOS 11 beta 9 release was uncharted territory, the first iOS release to hit this lofty beta territory. So new, Will had to add a new color to the chart. Will iOS 11 hit a beta 10?

Fun chart, Will. Great job.

Hyper Plan for macOS lets you easily create cards...

By Aaron Lee

Oryx Digital's Hyper Plan is a planning solution for macOS (10.8 and higher) and Windows. It allows anyone to easily create cards with user-defined properties, such as status, priority, assigned to and budget.

The cards can then be arranged and colored according to these properties. Users can arrange cards in rows by priority, or even colored by who they have been assigned to. Hyper Plan can also arrange cards in a timeline and total numerical properties by row and column.

Hyper Plan allows you to create cards with properties such as status, priority, assigned to and budget. The cards can then be arranged and colored according to these properties. For example, you could arrange cards into columns to do, doing, done and waiting with rows for each member of staff, and colored according to priority.

Or you could arrange them in rows by priority, colored by who they have been assigned to. You can switch between views with a...

LendEDU Poll: 70% of millennials report anxiety when...

Okay, folks, calm down. The results of a new LendEDU poll that surveyed 7,076 millennials (those born between 1982 and 2004) showed that a clear majority (69%) of millennials claim to get anxiety when they don't have their phone with them.

When the results were broken down by gender, 76% of females reported anxiety after not having their cell phone, while 63% of males reported the same.

This data coincides with a recent 60 Minutes segment where one Silicon Valley programmer discussed how our cell phones have been engineered like slot-machines, roping us in to keep us coming back for more. On the same show, psychologist Larry Rosen discussed his findings that revealed that the brain releases the hormone cortisol, a chemical that initiates a flight-or-fight response to danger, when someone...
