Here’s how well the iPhone 8’s new all-glass design...

When Apple announced the new iPhone 8, it was quick to tout the device’s durability. With a new, all-glass design, customers were rightfully worried about how sturdy that glass was. “This glass is the most durable ever in an iPhone,” Apple said.

A new video from YouTuber PhoneBuff puts Apple’s iPhone 8 Plus to the test with an extensive drop test and comparison to the Galaxy Note 8.

There’s a lot happening in the world of Apple news this week. Following are the hottest articles for the week of Sept. 18-22.

Apple: iPhones Are Too 'Complex' To Allow...

Jason Koebler writes: Apple's top environmental officer made the company's most extensive statements about the repairability of Apple hardware on Tuesday: "Our first thought is, 'You don't need to repair this.' When you do, we want the repair to be fairly priced and accessible to you," Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of policy and social initiatives said at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco. "To think about these very complex products and say the answer to all our problems is that you should have anybody to repair and have access to the parts is not looking at the whole problem." Apple has lobbied against "Fair Repair" bills in 11 states that would require the company to make its repair guides available and to sell replacement parts to the general public. Instead, it has focused on an "authorized service provider" model that allows the company to control the price and availability of repair.

Hackers Using iCloud's Find My iPhone Feature...

AmiMoJo shares a report from Mac Rumors: Over the last day or two, several Mac users appear to have been locked out of their machines after hackers signed into their iCloud accounts and initiated a remote lock using Find My iPhone. With access to an iCloud user's username and password, Find My iPhone on iCloud.com can be used to "lock" a Mac with a passcode even with two-factor authentication turned on, and that's what's going on here. Affected users who have had their iCloud accounts hacked are receiving messages demanding money for the passcode to unlock a locked Mac device. The usernames and passwords of the iCloud accounts affected by this "hack" were likely found through various site data breaches and have not been acquired through a breach of Apple's servers. Impacted users likely used the same email addresses, account names, and passwords for multiple accounts, allowing people with malicious intent to figure out their iCloud details.

Apple Daily Report for Sept. 22, 2017

The AWT News Update is on hiatus while my compadre, Steve Sande, takes a mini-road trip to celebrate his birthday (happy birthday, Steve). In its place, I’ll offer a text-only (no podcast) summary of breaking stories with a tip o’ my hat to my former website, Apple Daily Report.

The iFixit gang, which tears apart tech products and looks at their innards has gotten their hands on iPhone 8 models. You can see their teardown and its results here.

The iPhone is back at the top of the DxOMark camera rankings, after the Google Pixel and HTC U11 beat out the iPhone 7 series. The sensor improvements and new features in the iPhone 8 gave it a score of 92, while the dual-camera iPhone 8 Plus scores 94.

Apple doubles its iTunes movie rental window from 24...

In a support document Apple notes that, along with the launch of the new Apple TV with 4K, it’s extended the rental window for films rented on iTunes.

Customers have 30 days to start watching a movie after it's been rented. Once a movie is started, there's an additional 48 hours to finish the movie and/or rewatch it. That’s up from 24 hours previously (at least in the U.S.).

To see if a movie is available for rent, search the iTunes Store for that title and look for a Rent button. After you choose Rent, you can choose whether you want to stream your rental or download it.

Well, you did it. You pulled the trigger on a shiny new iPhone 8 or 8 Plus. Nice! Before you head out to take a squillion photos or plop it down on your new wireless charging pad, there are a few housekeeping details you should tend to first.

1. Back up and restore

This isn’t poor planning, we swear—it’s a good idea to back up your old phone after you have your new iPhone in hand, so the backup is as up-to-date as it can possibly be. You can back up via iCloud or iTunes:

For an iTunes backup: Connect your old iPhone to your Mac, launch iTunes, select your iPhone by clicking the little phone icon in the toolbar, and under Backups, choose This Computer. Checking Encrypt local backup is a good idea, so your account passwords and Health data gets backed up too—just choose a password you won’t forget. Click the button to Back...

Apple says you can download a local copy of an HD movie, and you might be able to download HDR and Dolby Vision versions, but you can’t download a 4K version. This is likely due to licensing issues with film studios, but still it’s disappointing (at least to a film buff like me).

Apple's Latest Products Get Rare Mixed-Bag...

Mark Gurman, writing for Bloomberg: Despite the strength of its brand, Apple occasionally releases a product to mediocre reviews -- remember the original Apple TV or Apple Watch? "I can't think of a single compelling reason to upgrade [to iPhone 8, or iPhone 8 Plus] from an iPhone 7 [which was launched last year]," wrote Nilay Patel of The Verge. Another potential sign of trouble: the iPhone 8 models didn't sell out during pre-orders, another rare occurrence for Apple phones. In 2013, the European Commission ordered a €360,000 ($430,000) study on how piracy affects sales of music, books, movies and games in the EU. However, it never ended up showing it to the public except for one cherry-picked section. That's possib...

Fitbit Ionic review: Meet the $300 fitness-focused...

Enlarge (credit: Valentina Palladino)

Fitbit has a lot riding on its new $300 Ionic smartwatch. Analyst reports suggest the smartwatch category will continue to grow over the next few years, and Apple and Google already have well-established devices and operating systems. Being one of the top players in the wearables game, Fitbit is unlikely to build a device that runs Android Wear (much less watchOS), so it designs its own devices from the ground up. The Ionic is Fitbit's serious attempt at a smartwatch, far more so than the $200 Blaze that came out last year. Running Fitbit OS, the Ionic...

Review: BandWerk’s Apple Watch bands offer premium...

While I’ve never seen myself as a key target for Apple’s fashion-oriented approach to the Apple Watch, I have been surprised. From initially wearing the black sport band full-time, I’ve actually come to enjoy having a variety of bands to change up the look.

I do have one of Apple’s woven nylon bands, as well as a third-party copy of the Space Black Link Bracelet (not available in the U.S. unfortunately), but mostly I like leather bands.

I do like Apple’s blend of the modern and traditional in its own range, but also appreciate more traditional craftsmanship in premium third-party bands. I previously reviewed one from Burkley, and this time I tried out a range of bands from German company BandWerk …

[VIDEO] Shot-for-shot might be a bit of an overstatement, but watch the video embedded in the main Loop post. Had no idea Airplane was a remake. If you’ve never seen the movie, it’s hilariously juvenile and fantastically funny. If you like that sort of thing. Lots of quotable lines, terrific sight gags.

Seeing the remake side by side with the original just makes me appreciate this comedy gem that much more.

Jeff Gamet, MacObserver:

If you’re planning on using the new heart rate monitoring features in watchOS 4 on your original Apple Watch think again because they aren’t there. Apple Watch Series 0, as it’s now called, can track your heart rate, but the new monitoring options require an Apple Watch Series 1 or newer.

Solid point, good to know.

Side note: Here’s how to tell which Apple Watch series/model you have.

The LTE Apple Watch and the red dot

Yesterday, we posted the Hodinkee review of the cellular Apple Watch, with some focus on the red dot placed on the edge of the Digital Crown.

To add to the discussion, this from Matthew Achariam’s Red Dot blog post:

We got an unknowing first glimpse at the latest design of the Apple Watch more than two years ago. No less, adorned on the wrist of Tim Cook was a stainless steel watch with a bright red crown cap.

This pic is a closeup from the original Reuters’ pic of Tim’s wrist from a few years ago:

Note the red dot. More from Matthew:

Leica’s brand is iconic due to their distinct red mark which it has used since 1913. It is instantly recognizable.

iFixit’s iPhone 8 teardown

Lots and lots of detail. A few highlights:

Fully topped off, this 3.82 V, 1821 mAh cell will deliver up to 6.96 Wh of power.

The iPhone 7 battery is 7.45 Wh, the Galaxy S8 has 11.55 Wh. Apple says the iPhone 7 battery life is comparable to the iPhone 7, even with the smaller capacity. Not clear how it compares with the Galaxy S8.

The 8’s sensor is bigger than the 7’s, but specs the same 12 MP resolution. This means the individual pixels are larger, letting in more light, improving colors, and decreasing noise.

The sample pictures I’ve seen all show this to be true, especially easy to see in low light.

There’s lots more, with some terrific pictures. Scroll about halfway down for some nice shots of the Qi enabled (pronounced “chee”) wireless charging coil.

Love this stuff.

iPhone macro photography made easy with Blips...

There are tons of macro and wide angle lens kits for iPhones, but they all share some common issues: they're usually expensive and bulky. Blips Smartphone Lens Kits take care of those problems, with a low cost of just $24.99 in our Deals Shop and a profile that makes it easy to carry the lenses with you wherever you go.

These minuscule lenses use a reusable adhesive to attach to your iPhone, and come in a matchbook-like carrier that's easy to slip into your wallet or pocket. The macro lens provides a 10x magnification at a focal length around 10mm, while the macro plus lens bumps that focal length to around 20mm.

Blips started with a crowdfunding program that brought not only the lenses but a complete microscopy kit called the Ultra Lab Kit ($52.99). If...

iOS 11 Mail Failing to Send with Outlook.com, Office...

Due to an improperly negotiated HTTP/2 connection, Mail in iOS 11 is having trouble sending email with Outlook.com, Office 365, and Exchange Server 2016 accounts. Those who haven’t yet updated to iOS 11 and rely on Microsoft-hosted email should probably delay the upgrade. If you’ve already upgraded to iOS 11, you can either use Microsoft’s Outlook client or potentially disable HTTP/2 in Windows Server 2016.
