As the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus start to arrive to customers, early videos offer a closer look at features and capabilities. A pair of YouTube videos put the device to the test when it comes to durability as well as speed. As you might expect, there aren’t huge differences between the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7, but the videos are nevertheless worth watching…

'Dear Apple, The iPhone X and Face ID Are...

Trent Lapinski from Hacker Noon writes an informal letter to Apple, asking "who the hell actually asked for Face ID?" and calling the iPhone X and new face-scanning security measure "Orwellian" and "creepy": For the company that famously used 1984 in its advertising to usher in a new era of personal computing, it is pretty ironic that 30+ years later they would announce technology that has the potential to eliminate global privacy. I've been waiting 10-years since the first iPhone was announced for a full-screen device that is both smaller in my hand but has a larger display and higher capacity battery. However, I do not want these features at the cost of my privacy, and the privacy of those around me. While the ease of use and user experience of Face ID is apparent, I am not questioning that, the privacy concerns are paramount in today's world of consistent security breaches. Given what we know from Wikileaks Vault7 and the CIA / NSA capabilities to hijack any iPhone, including...

Thoughts on Apple TV 4K

I’ve been testing the new Apple TV 4K for a few days, but I don’t own a 4K TV, so there’s no way I can pretend to write a full-on review when I can’t make use of the tentpole new feature. I do have a few thoughts, though:

  • Initial setup was amazingly simple. Plug it in, it boots up quickly, and it asks if you want to share setup information like your Wi-Fi network info from your iPhone. Hold your iPhone near the Apple TV and boom, Apple TV is on your network, and it knows some information like your iTunes Apple ID. This is true too for setting up a new iOS 11 device — you can get a headstart on setting up a new iPhone just by holding your old iPhone next to it. But this is especially helpful on Apple TV, where entering passwords and email addresses through the on-screen keyboard felt like a form of punishment. When you do need to type things, Siri dictation works like a charm — fast and accurate.

  • It is baffling to me that Apple didn’t redesign the...

The promise of Apple’s USB-C laptop future is expandability, versatility and flexibility. Plugging in single-device dongles for USB and HDMI is a stop-gap, but is wasting the potential of the port.

AAPL share price dives after Apple Watch Series 3,...

Shares in AAPL were sharply lower at the start of trading this morning on negative news about two new products; the Apple Watch Series 3 (which begins shipping tomorrow) and the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

For the Apple Watch Series 3, the bad news was that early reviewers had issues with the device not connecting to LTE networks -- oddly enough, an issue caused by the Wi-Fi connectivity of the device.

An Apple spokesperson told The Verge -- which had panned the Watch in a review based on the technical issues -- that "We have discovered that when Apple Watch Series 3 joins unauthenticated Wi-Fi networks without connectivity, it may at times prevent the watch from using cellular. We are investigating a fix for a future software release."

As the Watch will be in the hands of many early adopters tomorrow, the need for a fast fix is imperative for Apple. With the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the "issue" isn't really a surprise. Orders for the two new iPhones are slower than they...

Hodinkee review of the Apple Watch Series 3 Edition

Benjamin Klymer, Executive Editor of Hodinkee:

One of the most amusing things about doing what I do for a living – writing about and working with mechanical watches – is the reaction that other watch guys expect me, or really any other reasonable watch person, to have about the Apple Watch. They think we should hate it. I don’t hate the Apple Watch, nor should anyone else. If anything, the build quality versus price ratio on the Apple Watch is so embarrassing for the Swiss that I genuinely think it will push mechanical watchmakers to be better.

This is a thoughtful, long, and fantastic review of the Series 3 Apple Watch. More specifically, Benjamin is writing and speaking about the ceramic Edition model, which now comes in both grey and white. Don’t miss the video at the top, and the terrific collection of pictures sprinkled throughout.

There’s no way to quote out all the chewy goodness in this post, but I did find this particular point fascinating.

iOS Control Center: Understanding how the WiFi and...

John Gruber, commenting on the fact that the WiFi and Bluetooth buttons in Control Center no longer act as on/off switches:

This is an interesting feature, but I think it’s going to confuse and anger a lot of people. Until iOS 11, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles in Control Center worked the way it looked like they worked: they were on/off switches. Now, in iOS 11, they still look like on/off switches, but they act as disconnect switches.

Off the top of my head, I would suggest making them three-way switches: on and connected, on but disconnected, and off.

Completely agree. This setup is confusing. As John points out, when you tap the WiFi button, WiFi is left on, but you are disconnected from your current session. Tap it again, you are reconnected. The icon goes from a blue background to a grey background, and back to blue when you reconnect.

To complete the picture, there is a third icon state. Take a look at what happens when you turn on airplane mode...

Affinity Photo can now read a variety of different image file formats, so if, for example someone emails you a PSD file, you can now open and edit that file – with all layers intact – directly on your iPad. You can even save it back out again as a PSD and drag it straight into an email reply.

Affinity Photo for iPad is compatible with the iPad Pro 9.7-inch, 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch, iPad Air 2, iPad 2017, and optimized for Apple Pencil. For more information go to affinity.serif.com/photo/ipad

Apple TV with 4K doesn’t support the Dolby Atmos...

The new Apple TV with 4K doesn’t support the Dolby Atmos surround sound format — yet. However, Apple tells The Verge that the lack of Atmos isn’t a hardware limitation, and that support is on the roadmap. I expect we’ll see it in an upcoming tvOS upgrade.

Dolby Atmos is an audio format for creating and playing back multichannel movie soundtracks. It was developed to give movie sound a more three-dimensional effect. Traditional 5.1- and 7.1-channel surround setups deliver captivating sound using speakers placed all around your room. Dolby Atmos takes this to another level with speakers to create a "height" layer of sound above the listener.

This overhead sound extends the height of your system's soundstage while also allowing for some very cool effects. Imagine hearing an airplane flying over your head – not just in front of and behind you. With a Dolby Atmos...

Inside iOS 11: App Store renovation for iPhone, iPad...

Other than speed enhancements and new multitasking features, some of the changes to iOS 11 are cosmetic -- one of those surface changes is the appearance of the App Store to make it more look like Apple Music's design language.

Mellel: The advanced word processor for real writers

Macs have been the writer’s computer of choice since the 1980s, and as a result there are probably more text editors and word processing apps for macOS than any other operating system. However, most of those tools don’t have what it takes to do really serious writing on the Mac. Take for instance, writing research papers with complex mathematical functions and copious references, or writing a book with extensive cross-references, footnotes, many chapters and subsections. The only word processor that can handle it all is Mellel, this week’s sponsor of Apple World Today.

Here’s a humorous look at what Mellel handles with ease that the “King of Word Processors” doesn’t even have a clue how to do:

Mellel's powerful 21st-century text engine enables an object-based approach to word processing, making tasks in long-form documents happen instantly. Have hundreds of saved searches? You can run all of them at once...

Apple TV 4K reviews: The best streaming TV box...

Apple’s tactic of making advance review models available to selected publications, and setting an embargo on publication, means it’s able to control the flow of reviews so that they all get maximum attention.

On Tuesday, it was the iPhone 8 (including our review). Yesterday, the Apple Watch Series 3 (our review). And today it’s the turn of the Apple TV 4K.

The bottom-line of most reviews is that it’s an expensive device compared to alternatives like...

How to scan documents in iOS 11 Notes app

Good walkthrough by Christian Zibreg, iDownloadBlog, on using Notes to scan and save documents.

I love this feature. And I find it interesting to think about edge detection at work here. Watch how the scanner detects the edges of a piece of paper laying on a table, automatically adjusts the scanning frame so you end up with a relatively rectangular result.

This object and edge detection is a hallmark of ARKit. Not certain that’s how this was done, but would not surprise me if it was.

Bose unveils new SoundSport Free truly wireless...

Bose has this morning unveiled its first truly wireless headphones, dubbed the SoundSport Free. Much like Apple’s own AirPods and Jaybird’s latest Run in-ears, Bose is taking aim at active users looking for an audio solution during exercise.

As one of the biggest names in audio, Bose is taking its established tech and cramming it into earbuds that weigh just 0.35-ounces each. A wireless carrying case will handle charging, much like what Apple and Jaybird has instituted with their own headsets in recent releases. However, its a new antennae system that Bose claims will truly set its new release apart from the competition.

Hackers use Find My iPhone to remotely lock Macs,...

Juli Clover, MacRumors:

Over the last day or two, several Mac users appear to have been locked out of their machines after hackers signed into their iCloud accounts and initiated a remote lock using Find My iPhone.

With access to an iCloud user’s username and password, Find My iPhone on iCloud.com can be used to “lock” a Mac with a passcode even with two-factor authentication turned on, and that’s what’s going on here.

This does appear to be a genuine hole in Apple’s security scheme, though iCloud itself was not hacked.

Seems like this is fixable. From the comments:

When you go to remote lock a device you enter a lock passcode and the device’s password or passcode. When that is sent to the Mac, iPhone, whatever, if the device password doesn’t match, it won’t lock the device. That way, even if a hacker guesses your Apple ID and password using hacked credentials, they still can’t lock the device without the Mac’s login.

Not sure if this is...

Future iPads and iPhones could sport addition...

Apple has filed for a patent (number 20170269785) for “detecting backside force in a touch screen device. If it reaches fruition, it would mean iPads and iPhones with additional touch controls on their back.

In the patent filing Apple notes that many types of input devices may be used to provide input to computing devices, such as buttons or keys, mice, trackballs, joysticks, touch screens and the like, but that touch screens, in particular, are becoming increasingly popular because of their ease and versatility of operation.

When a user is holding a mobile device and interacting with the device, they may hold the device in such a way that their hand or fingers rests on the rear of the device. When they interact with the device, the portion of the hand contacting the rear of the device may apply force to the rear of the device, either unintentionally or intentionally. Apple wants to change this by implementing rear touch controls that only respond when the user...

iOS 11 “Messages in iCloud” feature touted, release...

This may be another case of having to wait a little bit for an iOS 11 feature that was shown in a demo but not released as of yet.

Apple’s “Messages is iCloud” feature, which was touted at the 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference event, was removed during the beta cycle and will return at some undisclosed point in the future.

The “Messages in iCloud” feature synchronized a user’s Messages “stack” between devices seamlessly. With the feature set implemented, deleting a message on one logged-in device would strike it from all, plus only the newest messages would be stored on-device with the rest held in iCloud and loaded only when needed.

Since the release of iOS 11 on Tuesday, there is no mention of the cloud-based Messages on the feature page for iOS 11.

Even without the functionality, users can continue to receive and store messages on each device, and can continue to backup and restore messages using iCloud Backup.

At present, not only is...

Rumor: iPhone X could face additional delays, see...

If you’re hankering for an iPhone X, you may have to wait a bit longer.

While Apple will begin taking pre-orders for the handset next month, Raymond James chip analyst Christopher Caso conducted supply chain checks this morning and shared a note stating that while production delays had already delayed the release of the iPhone X, further delays have occurred recently. He says production is set to start in mid-October, later than earlier predictions. With additional delays, full production ramp up will be delayed into the December quarter.

James offered the following comment:

Interestingly, while the industry widely anticipated a shift in iPhone ramp timing, our checks suggest there was an incremental delay in the build plans – with orders firmed up as recently as last week – shifting production more into the December quarter.

While our checks are ongoing, initial feedback from our meetings suggests that final production of iPhone X has not yet begun...

Apple TV 4K will support Dolby Atmos surround sound...

The new Apple TV embargo has lifted and The Verge’s Nilay Patel notes a couple of interesting tidbits about the new set-top box in his review.

Firstly, the surprising lack of Dolby Atmos will apparently be rectified in a future software update (although Apple didn’t share a timeline). Perhaps more shockingly, the native YouTube app for the Apple TV doesn’t support 4K or HDR playback …

How to customize the Control Center in iOS 11

You can customize Control Center in iOS 11, so you can quickly change the settings for the things you do the most. Here’s how:

  • Go to Settings > Control Center.
  • Tap Customize Controls.
  • To add controls, tap the “+” button. To remove controls, tap the “-“, then choose Remove.

Want to rearrange controls in Control Center? Just go to Settings > Control Center, tap Customize Controls, then touch and hold the three horizontal line icon next to the controls and drag them in the order that you want them.

(This how-to is based on my experiences and info on Apple's support pages — where the images sometimes come from.)

We noted way back in July that toggling Bluetooth and wifi off in the iOS 11 control center doesn’t do quite what you might expect. Rather than disabling the functionality, it merely disconnects from currently-connected devices and cancels the auto-join feature to stop it immediately reconnecting.

But not everyone got the memo, so the issue is getting some fresh attention …

Time is money, so you need Office Time for macOS,...

Office Time for the Mac (as well as iOS and watchOS devices) makes sure none of those valuable dollars and cents slip through your fingers, and more importantly helps you bill that to a third party. It starts off as a general time tracking program.

You can set a series of projects and categories to figure out exactly what you are doing and whom you are doing it for. For example, if you are working on a website project, you might put the website as the project name, coding as the category and then put in notes about exactly what you are coding.

You can even specify what your billable rate is. With this level of detail available, you’ll be able to tell the client exactly how the bill was derived and where their money is going.

For professional management, you can use advanced reporting such as graphs and spreadsheets to determine where you time and money are going. In particular I used the program to make...

Qrayon has introduced Noteflow 1.0, a new digital notebook app that’s designed to replace pen and paper. You can use it for taking notes, annotating PDFs, sketching and visual thinking, plus a whole lot more. Noteflow natively integrates with iOS 11's file system and drag ’n drop capabilities.
