Hands On: Snoopy's All Star Football (iOS)

Cupcake Digital is a well known name in the ring of games for elementary age children. To date, they've created games for children's entertainment titles such as Yo Gabba Gabba, Wow! Wow! Wubbsy, and Strawberry Shortcake. Cupcake Digital tackles two American classics, Peanuts and football, in Snoopy's All Star Football. Is the game worth handing to your little ones, or is it the digital equivalent of Lucy pulling the football away at the last minute?...

Never miss a credit card reward again with Wallaby...

Have you ever held up the checkout line at Target because you couldn’t remember which of your credit cards offered a special cash-back boost at megastores?

No? Just me? That can’t be true.

Wallaby looks at where you're shopping and tells you the best card to use.

I have three credit cards, and each has its own set of rewards and rules. One of them changes said rewards every quarter—pretty much just when I’ve memorized what last quarter’s special boost was. I picked these cards based on rewards, and had a sinking feeling that I wasn’t always maximizing what they had to offer. So imagine my reaction to finding Wallaby, a credit card management app for iOS. I was THRILLED.

Rev. Jesse Jackson urges Tim Cook to take a lead in...

The Rev. Jesse Jackson has written to Apple CEO Tim Cook to urge the company to create “world-class working conditions” for low-paid contractors like security guards, requesting a meeting with Cook to discuss the issue, reports the San Jose Mercury News.

The paper reports a growing debate about the widespread use of contract workers by tech companies for low-paid roles, contract staff having none of the protections or perks afforded to direct employees …

The contrast with often highly-paid tech employees is, says the paper, stark.

Contract workers […] do...

Reviews: IDrive cloud backup and sync service

There are a lot of cloud services out there, and nearly all of them can be used for backing up key files and folders. A few dedicated services are focused on backing up nearly everything the user has, and thus offer large quantities of space needed for the task, but are expensive and slow. Others, like Dropbox, offer far less space but allow instant access to files across a range of devices. ......

5 iPad apps for making the perfect Thanksgiving...

Cooking Thanksgiving dinner can be daunting. Not only must you prepare tons of food—some of it you’ve rarely cooked before—you’ve also got to make sure that it’s all ready to hit the table at the same time. And you’ve got to keep all those plates spinning under the watchful eye of family members ready to remind you of every overcooked turkey breast, lumpy gravy, or overheated green bean casserole at every future get-together.

Luckily, you don’t have to tackle Thanksgiving dinner alone, provided your kitchen arsenal includes an iPad. The App Store has a cornucopia of cooking apps that you’ll be giving thanks for when it’s time to get cooking.

We’ve rounded up five iPad-optimized apps that aim to help you prepare Thanksgiving dinner, whether your menu calls for a turkey or a tofurkey. These apps will help you at every step, from picking recipes and planning a menu, to cooking multiple dishes at one time, to figuring out what to do with 20 pounds of leftovers.

Keep the wine flowing at Thanksgiving dinner with...

Thanksgiving is a lovely holiday. What could be better than enjoying dishes handed down through generations (or pulled from Pinterest) with your adoring
family? Well, if your grandpa’s turkey is dried out and your relatives only want to know when you’re finally going to settle down, wine can—no, will—make the experience tolerable.

One of my favorite new apps is NextGlass, a beer and wine recommendation engine that’s based on science, not buzzwords.
The app makes for a perfect companion when you’re shopping for last-minute Thanksgiving dinner ingredients by helping you pick the best bottle or bottles
to pair with your meal (or polish off later).

Sony reportedly plans to introduce style-focused e-...

A new Bloomberg report indicates that Sony might be preparing to produce a smartwatch that uses an e-paper display rather than a traditional LCD display. Not only will the display be made of e-paper, the report continues, but the entire wrist band as well. Could such a device take on Apple’s own smartwatch, set for release early next year?

E-paper, for those unfamiliar with the term, is the same low-power “electronic paper” display used in devices like the Kindle. It allows a display to be legible, even in direct sunlight, by reflecting light rather than emitting it like a standard LCD display.

Bloomberg says that by building the entire watch...

Bing and Yahoo reportedly aiming to become default...

Last week Mozilla announced that its Firefox browser would be dropping Google as the default search engine in favor of Yahoo. While it’s a good move for Yahoo, it won’t gain the company the exposure that comes with being the default search engine on something more widely used, such as Apple’s Safari browser on iOS devices.

That position has been held by Google since the iPhone’s launch in 2007, but the agreement that made the Mountain View-based company the default site for all of Safari’s searches will expire next year, and The Information reports that Yahoo and Microsoft’s Bing are both vying for the spot.

The SKEYE Nano Drone Quadcopter: $34.99

Check out the SKEYE Nano Drone, a quadcopter drone that measures just 4 centimeters on a side. That's small enough to land on your thumb. It has three flight modes, one for beginners who are just learning to fly, another for more advanced pilots, and a third, âexpertâ mode for seasoned flight veterans. The company that makes it says it will fly outdoors, but I personally imagine it's far better suited for indoor flight because of its size. At $34.99 through our deal (regularly $60), it's an expensive way to find out how much fun flying a quadcopter is. There's a video of the device in action on the deal listing. It's also priced for Xmas, so giddy up.

Review: Heckler Design @Rest Stand for iPad (2014)

We first saw Heckler Design's @Rest nearly three years ago, when it was a $59 steel iPad stand. @Rest has recently received a redesign — the stand now has a slightly smaller footprint. It also lacks the adhesive pads seen in its prior incarnation, and loses two of the grips used to keep an iPad in place. Additionally, the rubber feet for the bottom of the stand now come already affixed to @Rest, rather than separately. @Rest is also now only $29. The rest of the stand's functionality remains the same. It has two separate viewing angles, 30 and 60 degrees, and an opening on both sides to run a Lightning cable through. @Rest comes in seven different colors, and we received the black-gray version of the stand. We'll keep this review brief, as @Rest is still very similar to its 2011 edition in functionality; refer to our past review for more details.{/exp:char_limit}

Lyft aims to convert regular folks into casual...

Car-hailing apps are on a never-ending quest to recruit more drivers to cultivate a reputation of reliability. Lyft, Uber, and other startups already rely
on regular people using their own cars to offer rides, but a new Lyft product called Driver Destination aims to unlock a new kind of driver: one who never
would have driven for Lyft before.

Driver Destination launched Tuesday as part of

Lyft’s Line carpooling service
. It lets drivers find one or two passengers to pick along their regular routes, like on the way to school or work, as an easy way to make money and reduce the number
of cars on the road. Drivers simply enter their destination and choose to see requests that are only along that route.

Following an announcement earlier this month that Microsoft was adding Dropbox integration for syncing and sharing to the Office for iOS apps, Dropbox announced today that the feature is now available in its latest app updates for iOS and Android.

The integration essentially allows users to tap into Dropbox storage directly from within the Office mobile apps, but it will also include the ability to send links to files from Office using Dropbox, open documents from Dropbox in Office, and more. Dropbox has instructions on how to use the new integration with Microsoft’s Office apps on its website.

To get started, make sure your Dropbox app is up to date on your...

IDC: iPad’s first year of decline expected as...

The latest numbers from market research company IDC reveal that worldwide tablet growth is expected to have significantly declined in 2014, with just 7.2% year-over-year growth compared to 52.5% in 2013. A contributing factor will likely be the iPad’s first year of decline as the tablet’s market share continues to fall because of a growing number of cheaper alternatives.

IDC finds that the slowdown in sales of both the iPad and the broader tablet market is largely unsurprising, given that tablets have a longer upgrade cycle that is closer to that of computers than smartphones. It was originally expected that tablets would be...

T-Mobile has agreed to provide more accurate information to help customers determine when their mobile data speeds are being throttled, according to a new FCC release. T-Mobile provides “capped” data plans, however unlike competing carriers, the company simply slows down data speeds when users exceed their plan thresholds, rather than billing for overages. Although T-Mobile makes no secret about this throttling process, it was discovered…

FCC pressures T-Mobile into showing actual speed...

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission this week reached an agreement with T-Mobile to ensure that customers receive proper information about the speed of their wireless internet connection, even if the user has a capped data plan. The carrier has 60 days to implement the changes outlined in the agreement.

The underlying confusion stems from T-Mobile exempting certain speed test services from a customer’s monthly data allotment on capped plans. For instance, a T-Mobile customer with an iPhone 6 could use the popular Ookla SpeedTest app to check the speed of his or her connection without using any data.

The issue is that, since certain speed test services are exempt from monthly data allotments, customers on...

Susquehanna Raises AAPL Target to $135 on Strong...

Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Chris Caso raised his 12 month target price for Apple's stock from US$120 up to $135 on Tuesday in response to continued high demand for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. According to his research, demand for the iPhone 6 Plus is so high that Apple simply can't make phones as fast as consumers buy them.

The Mac Observer Spin: Demand for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus hasn't dropped off since their introduction in September, and we're just now entering into the busiest shopping season for the year. Apple's real problem this holiday season won't be selling iPhones, it'll be making enough to meet demand.

Apple crosses $700 billion market cap milestone,...

Apple stock ($AAPL) crossed yet another momentous milestone for its financials, hitting $700 billion market capitalization as the stock ticked over $119.65. At a pre-split price, this tallies $837.13. The stock last peaked in late 2012, when it topped out in the mid $650’s. That’s a $50 billion increase from two weeks ago.

Through 2013, the price tumbled over investor doubts about new product categories and Cook’s leadership. In recent months, though, $AAPL stock has returned and surpassed its 2012 highs. The reduction in shares due to Apple’s buybacks program has been more than offset than share price growth, off the back of the company’s strong earnings and forecasts.

First Look: MOS Kick Stand + Tripod Mount

Made from solid steel and billed as "the world's smallest, pocket-size stand and tripod mount" for iOS devices, MOS's new Kick ($35) is a very low-profile option designed primarily for holding iPhones upright for photography purposes. Measuring around 2.8" long by 1.2" wide by 0.35" tall at its largest points, Kick includes a circular screw hole for attachment of a self-supplied tripod, plus a screw-tension adjustable groove that holds your iOS device. The groove is padded with three thin sheets of rubber, and can be tightened around the edge of your device if you want to hold it closer to 90 degrees than on a reclining angle. Kick also has a triangular keychain attachment point and a bottle opener on the sides, both a little on the sharp side for something you might toss into a pocket. While Kick can be used as a stand and does have enough weight and strength to hold a bare iPad Air 2, it's definitely on the fine edge of tablet compatibility, and best suited to smaller devices.{/...
