macOS Sierra is set to launch on September 20

We barely heard a thing about the Mac and macOS during Apple’s big iPhone-centric event on Wednesday, but it turns out that Tim Cook had something planned after all. Shortly after the event wrapped up, Apple revealed that macOS Sierra, the company’s next operating system for the Mac, will hit the Mac App Store on September 20.

Apple gave us a sneak peak of Sierra during the company’s annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference in June. It’s the first OS for the Mac that includes Siri, and will also bring Apple Pay to the Mac. We’re also excited about Optimized Storage, Picture in Picture, Tabs, and Universal Clipboard. Oh, and changes to Photos, too.

Modified USB Ethernet Adapter Can Steal Windows and...

An anonymous reader writes from a report via Softpedia: An attacker can use a modified USB Ethernet adapter to fool Windows and Mac computers into giving away their login credentials. The attack relies on using a modified USB Ethernet adapter that runs special software, which tricks the attacked computer into accepting the Ethernet adapter as the network gateway, DNS, and WPAD server. The attack is possible because most computers will automatically install any plug-and-play (PnP) USB device. Even worse, when installing the new (rogue) USB Ethernet adapter, the computer will give out the local credentials needed to install the device. The custom software installed on the USB intercepts these credentials and logs them to an SQLite database. This attack can take around 13 seconds to carry out, and the USB Ethernet adapter can be equipped with an LED that tells the attacker when the login credentials have been stolen.

The rumors got a lot right about the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Its design isn't too far off from the 6S and 6S Plus, it has an immovable Home button, the Plus has a dual-camera setup to simulate optical zoom, and (crucially) that headphone jack is gone.

But aside from that sticking point, the new iPhones offer a lot of the solid technological...

In addition to two shiny new iPhones, Apple has announced its second generation Apple Watch today, calling it the Apple Watch Series 2. The appearance is nearly identical to the original Apple Watch, with the exception of the new (optional) ceramic build material. The biggest changes can be found under the hood. The Verge reports: "The built-in GPS allows the device to perform mapping on its own, no phone required. The company also upgraded the processor in the device, now called the S2, and the display. The Series 2 has a dual-core processor Apple says is 50 percent faster than its predecessor, with double the graphics performance thanks to a new GPU. The display is now 50 percent brighter as well. The company also renewed its longstanding partnership with Nike with a special Nike+ version of the Apple Watch. Don’t worry, Square’s card reader works with Apple’s...

Square’s popular magnetic stripe card reader plugs into an iPhone headphone jack, giving small business owners who would otherwise go cash only the ability to accept debit and credit cards. But Apple just officially killed the headphone jack, so what’s a business owner to do?

I reached out to Square spokeswoman Semonti Stephens, who said the Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter (like the one Apple is including in the iPhone 7 box when it ships Sept. 16) will work with Square’s reader. But it’s unclear how many people will actually need to use an adapter. The Venn diagram of business owners that don’t support chip cards—which Square accepts with a separate, wireless card reader that doesn’t use the headphone jack—and iPhone 7 buyers is probably pretty small.

Apple today reiterated its belief that "Music is in our DNA" by making a series of announcements that really point to the company's commitment to sound. Not only do the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus include stereo speakers built-in, but they'll also come with new Lightning EarPods. The biggest news, though, was the introduction of wireless AirPods and new Beats wireless headphones.

The AirPods (seen above) look oddly like a pair of EarPods with the cables broken off. Those long "probes" (for lack of a better name) contain beamforming microphones that apparently do a very good job at picking up voice tones. Inside each AirPod is a custom Apple W1 chip to provide up to 5 hours of battery life in each 'pod, allow use of one or both AirPods, and switch between any number...

Apple Pay is coming to Japan along with the iPhone 7

The newly announced iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch Series 2 will bring customers in Japan the ability to use Apple Pay, Apple’s mobile payment service, beginning in October.

Apple Pay is accepted anywhere Suica is available, so users can make quick everyday purchases and buy or reload a Suica card or commuter pass, all with their iPhone, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook. 'Fastest smartphone chip ever,' the A10...

At the heart of every Apple iPhone is usually an upgraded chip, and this year’s iPhone 7 is no different: the A10 Fusion, which Apple executives claimed is the fastest smartphone chip ever.

‘If you’ve been paying attention, you know that Apple’s chip team has been killing it in performance,” said

Apple has an existing license from ARM, the British smartphone chip designer that was recently acquired by Softbank. Rather than licensing a fixed design, Apple’s deal apparently permits tweaking for its own purposes, allowing the company to optimize it for new iPhone releases.

Apple’s new A10 Fusion chip is orders of magnitude faster than the original iPhone.

Two cameras in iPhone 7 Plus allow synthetic zoom,...

The new iPhone 7 Plus introduced at Apple's September product event sports two cameras, set closely side by side, as was widely rumored. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, described the system, which pairs a 28mm wide-angle lens, just as in the iPhone 7, with a new 56mm telephoto lens.

Apple will release the phone with hardware-based 1x and 2x zoom, and a software synthesized zoom between the two. An improved digitally interpolated zoom mode handles images above 2x to 10x. A software update that will ship later will add a Portrait mode that creates photos that look like they came from much more expensive digital cameras.

iOS 10 and watchOS 3 are coming on September 13

At the Apple iPhone 7 event on Wednesday, the company revealed that the ship date for iOS 10 and watchOS 3 is September 13.

Following the Apple event, the company released to developers the golden master of iOS 10 and watchOS 3, as well as the GMs of macOS Sierra and tvOS 10. When beta software turns to golden master, it is usually considered the final version that will be eventually released to the general public.

When iOS 10 is officially released, it will be available to iOS users through Software Update in the Settings app. It’s a good idea to perform a backup before installing the new operating system. In case you have problems with iOS 10, you can always revert to the backup.

SAN FRANCISCO—Apple will release the final version of macOS 10.12 Sierra to the public on September 20th. The company made the announcement on its web site during its September product event today.

Aside from being called "macOS" now, Sierra brings a handful of big new features and a longer list of minor tweaks. We covered most of that ground in our preview of the developer build of the software (and we'll cover it all again in more depth in our full review), but the short list includes Siri, proximity-based Apple Watch unlocking, Apple Pay...

SAN FRANCISCO—Apple will release WatchOS 3 to all current Apple Watch users on September 13. The company announced the official release date as part of its September product event.

The update builds on the foundation laid in WatchOS 1 and 2 but also makes some major changes to the way the Apple Watch works. Apple has worked to make it easier to swipe between watch faces, has introduced an iOS-esque Control Center, and has introduced a “dock” of up to 10 apps that are loaded in memory and updated behind-the-scenes to make launching and using apps quicker. Docked apps have also killed “Glances,” which were similarly intended to make watch interactions faster but mostly failed because of...

All about Apple Watch Series 1

Remember the original Apple Watch? It's back, with a new name, lower price point, and an improved processor. The Apple Watch Series 1 starts at just $269, and uses the same dual-core processor as the new Apple Watch Series 2.

What it doesn't come with is the built-in GPS and 50m water-resistant capabilities of the new Watch. It will also come only in the "Sport" configuration, with an aluminum casing and sport bands. Of course, you can order accessory bands as much as you'd like.

As with the other new products, pre-orders begin this Friday, September 9 and the new Apple Watch Series 1 should be available on September 16. A full comparison of the Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2 can be found here.

Apple pushes new EarPods and AirPods for a future...

Apple will try to ease the pain of killing the headphone jack in the iPhone 7, shipping the new smartphone with Lightning-enabled EarPods and an analog adapter.

“The reason to move on ... it really comes down to one word: Courage,” Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller said during the company’s September news event.

Schiller explained that abandoning the analog headphone jack allows Apple to make room for various other technological improvements, such as brighter displays, faster processors, and the iPhone 7’s stereo speakers. The Lightning connection also allows for new headphone features, he said, including adaptive noise cancellation and higher-quality audio without an external power source.

SAN FRANCISCO—Apple will release the final version of iOS 10 to the public on September 13. The company made the announcement as part of its September 7th product event, which we are covering live.

What you need to know about the iPhone 7: No...

The rumors were true: Apple’s next-generation iPhones, the 7 and 7 Plus, traded the headphone jack for Lightning. What this means for you: Now there’s one port instead of two. The company is including Lightning-connected EarPods with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Apple is also including a Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter in the box to avoid excessive outrage.

So why that lack of a jack?

“It’s been with us for a really long time,” Phil Schiller said during Apple’s iPhone presentation on Wednesday. “It comes down to courage—courage to move on, do something new that betters all of us.”

That something new is a wireless standard, debuting in another headset product called Apple AirPods. The W1 chip inside offers consistent playback that only starts when the pods are in your ear. You can double-tap a pod to access Siri.
