Apple could be able to pay just 10% tax to...

Apple hasn’t exactly seen eye-to-eye with president-elect Donald Trump, responding dismissively to Trump’s call for a boycott of Apple products, and witholding support from the GOP convention. But it seems they do agree on one topic: allowing companies to repatriate profits from overseas subsidiaries at a reduced rate of tax.

Apple has repeatedly called for tax reform to permit this, and last month Trump promised (video below) to do so while speaking at the Economic Club of New York prior to the election …

Apple Now Sells Refurbished iPhones

In the past, Apple has only sold refurbished Macs, iPads and various niche devices on its refurb store. Now the company is officially selling refurbished iPhones, offering the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in its refurb store. 9to5Mac reports: Apple has sort of sold refurbished iPhones before, but those sales were relegated to an eBay store front and never fully acknowledged by the company. This is the first time that the company has offered iPhones on its official refurb store online. Customers will find the iPhone 6s in 16 GB storage varieties for $449.00. The larger iPhone 6s Plus is being offered in two storage varieties: 16Gb and 64GB for $529 and $589, respectively. It seems that all colors are currently available, which includes Silver, Space Gray, Gold, and Rose Gold. In the end, users can expect to save up to 15% ($110) by going the refurbished route, and remember that these devices come with a full 1-year factory warranty, which makes refurb units a great idea for budget-...

Good news for Apple's iBookstore: ebook market...

Here's some good news for Apple's iBookstore: the ebook market will more than double by 2020, according to Strategy Analytics. Increasing e-reading device penetration, more readily available content, new business models, and adoption in China will see the market's revenue top $16 billion in the next eight years, the research group adds.

"A clear trend in recent years has been the shift of e-reading from desktop computers to mobile, in particular to reading on smartphones and tablets.  At the same time, more readers are choosing multi-purpose tablets over dedicated e-readers as their primary ebook reading device," says David MacQueen, executive director, Apps and Media, Strategy Analytics.

All in all, the research group expects ebook reading penetration to increase from less than 10% of the total population in 2013 to close to 25% in 2020. China, the biggest smartphone market in the world, has just begun...

Apple already told us that the 2016 MacBook Pro had set a new online sales record, backed by supply-chain reports of increased component orders, but Slice Intelligence has provided our first look at the scale of those orders. The company reports that the new models took just five days to outsell every high-profile laptop on the U.S. market.

It has already outsold combined sales of the Dell XPS 13 and 15 – probably the closest equivalents in the Windows world – which have been...

CRU-DataPort eRazer Ultra useful for erasing hard...

By Aaron Lee

If you need to completely erase data from a hard drive, you need to check out the Drive eRazer Ultra from CRU-DataPort. Let me rephrase that: it’s a great device if you regularly have to erase data. It’s overkill for those who only do this occasionally — say, such as when they’re selling a Mac.

The eraser Ultra is a US$249. standalone hardware device that erases all data from 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch IDE/PATA and SATA hard drives faster and more securely than software solutions. Deleting a file or reformatting a drive won't permanently remove important information including credit card numbers, corporate and medical records, financial data, passwords or photos. Critical data remains accessible unless a proper tool is used to erase the hard drive entirely -- and you'll want to erase all that data before...

Sony’s compact RX1R II is a whole lotta camera, but...

For most people, an iPhone is all the camera you’ll need—it’s in your pocket wherever you roam, ready to capture (or ruin, depending on who you talk to) the special moments of your life. And with the announcement of every new iPhone, its photographic credentials creep a little closer to rendering a lot of compact cameras obsolete.

However, not everyone is content with the photos their smartphone is capable of grabbing, with their wee-image sensors and software trickery. I’m one of them. As much as I rely on my iPhone SE for photos while I blunder through my daily life, I prefer to use Sony’s RX100 Mark III when I need to take my photos to a higher level—like when I’m doing product shots, a review, or I want to capture a spectacular view while I’m on the road. It offers me the opportunity to take more-detailed, life-like photos in a larger, more edit-friendly file...

Refurbished iPhones now available on Apple's...

You’ve long been able to pick up a refurbished Mac or iPad on Apple’s online store, but never an iPhone. That changes today.

Apple just added refurbished iPhones, which it has typically used as replacements for broken devices, to its online store, so you can pick up a relatively new unlocked phone for a lower price.

The 7 and 7 Plus are too new to be included in the refurb store, but you can pick up an iPhone 6s and 6s Plus for as low as $449—that’s for the 16GB 6s. The 16GB 6s Plus is $529, and the 64GB 6s Plus is $589. Apple doesn’t actually sell those models in its regular store anymore, since bumping up storage space to 32GB and 128GB with the launch of the iPhone 7.

Ireland Will Bring the Fight Over Apple Taxes To the...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Digital Trends: The tax debate between Apple, Ireland, and the European Union may escalate in the next few months. According to recent reports, the Irish Finance Minister, Michael Noonan, will bring the debate to the EU court, a move that could trigger a years-long court battle. The battle stems from a European Commission finding that Ireland had been giving Apple tax breaks, something that has attracted a number of multinational employers to Ireland. The EU, however, has ordered the practices to change. After a three-year probe into Ireland's relationship with Apple, the European Commission ordered Ireland to collect $14.5 billion in back taxes from the company. That is the largest state-aid payback demand in history. The decision has been the subject of criticism, particularly from this side of the Atlantic. The U.S. Treasury Department says the decision is a threat "to undermine foreign investment, the business climate in Europe, and the...

Marsh, inMarket partner on first Apple Watch-...

Marsh Supermarkets and inMarket have announced a new iBeacon platform, the first to emphasize the Apple Watch. The plan is to use iBeacons at Marsh's 75 locations to push ads, shopping lists, and other content to both Watches and iPhones. The 2016 model of the Chevy Volt will support Apple's CarPlay, at least if an early demonstration version is accurate. The car is on display at this week's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and its dash system shows options for both CarPlay and MirrorLink connections. Google's Android Auto is notably absent, but since the 2016 Volt isn't due to go on sale until mid-2015, there may be time to implement it....

HomeKit requires Apple TV hub for remote Siri...

People wanting to control HomeKit-enabled devices remotely through Apple's Siri must have an Apple TV at home to serve as a hub, according to Verge sources, including two launch partners and a person said to be "close to HomeKit's development." Siri controls will always work while an iPhone or iPad is on the same network as a HomeKit device, but until now it wasn't fully clear how remote operation might work. The Apple TV must also be a third-generation model running at least v7.0 firmware or newer. Notably, remote operation without Siri -- using the vendor app for a HomeKit product directly -...

AT&T files to dismiss FTC lawsuit using Title II

In order to nullify a lawsuit brought by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over charges that the carrier was still throttling users on unlimited plans even when there was no network congestion, AT&T is claiming for the purposes of the lawsuit that it qualifies as a Title II "common carrier."
