Google faces antitrust investigation in Missouri

Josh Hawley, a Republican seeking to unseat Democratic U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill in next year’s elections, announced at a press conference that he issued an investigative subpoena to Google. He expressed concern over the accuracy of the company’s privacy policy, allegations it misappropriated content from rivals and claims it demoted competitors’ websites in search results.

The first thing I wondered is if Reuters put the first line in because they think this is a political move. Regardless, Google will have to answer the charges.

Feature Request: Siri could use help learning to...

Siri is steadily getting better with new features and improvements, but one place where the voice assistant could still learn a thing or two is how it pronounces city names. Siri tries its best to pronounce the names of cities based on their spelling, but this often leads to a comically bad mispronunciation that makes Siri sound like a complete out-of-towner.

Review: Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac

Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac was released a few months ago, and since then I've been using it to run Windows, Linux, Mac and even Android virtual machines on my 27-inch iMac. Parallels has been making great strides in providing a top virtualization tool since the first days of Intel Macs, and this 13th iteration adds a few features and hones performance.

New Features

A lot of MacBook Pros with Touch Bar have been sold in the past year or so, and it's not surprising that Parallels decided to add Touch Bar support to Parallels Desktop 13. The Touch Bar support is integrated with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint for Windows, as well as a handful of browsers including Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge. Elements that are pinned in the Windows Task Bar show up in the Touch Bar along with buttons for Cortana, Task View and settings. Other Touch Bar actions can...

Review: Brydge 10.5 Keyboard for the 10.5-inch iPad...

Brydge has been designing keyboards for iPads for quite a while, so it wasn’t surprising to see that they were one of the few accessory manufacturers to release a new keyboard for the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. In this Apple World Today review, I’ll take a detailed look at the US$139.99 Brydge 10.5 Keyboard.

Design

The Brydge 10.5 Keyboard uses the design cues from earlier models made by Brydge. By that, I mean that the keyboard features a pair of padded pivoting grips (see image below) that hold onto the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, turning the iPad into a small clamshell device. Think of it as a small laptop and you’ve got the correct idea. This is one of the few accessory keyboards for the iPad Pro that can be removed in seconds without having to wrestle with removing it from a shell.

Two of these grips keep your iPad Pro securely...

Security researchers say they used a $150 mask to break the Face ID facial recognition system that locks Apple's new iPhone X. The work may be a significant, it may be little more than a stunt with few real-world consequences, or it could possibly be something in the middle. So far, it's impossible to know because the researchers have evaded key questions about how they went about breaking into the device.

The supposed hack was carried out by researchers from Vietnamese security firm Bkav, which in 2009 demonstrated a way to...

iOS 11.2: Apple releases third beta to developers

Updated 11/13/17: The third iOS 11.2 beta is available for developers. The public beta version should follow in a couple days.

iOS 11 is the biggest change to Apple’s mobile operating system in years. It’s so ambitious in scope that many of it’s promised features still haven’t shipped yet. iOS 11.1 mostly fixed bugs and brought us a bunch of new emoji, but iOS 11.2 is more substantial, with the addition of Apple Pay Cash. Hopefully, it will also introduce iMessage in iCloud.

Here’s what we know about 11.2 so far. What’s in it, when it’s coming, and how you can grab the beta right now.

Midnight Fog version of Nike Apple Watch Cellular +...

A Midnight Fog edition of the Nike Apple Watch Cellular + GPS will be available Tuesday, Nov. 14, at nike.com and Nike retail stores for $399. No info yet on whether it will be sold by Apple, as well, though I suspect it will.

The Midnight Fog smartwatch is designed as a match for the Midnight Fog Nike Air VaporMax running shoes ($190) that roll out Nov. 24 globally (and Nov. 27 in North America).

The Nike+ Run Club app is integrated into Apple Watch Nike+ editions and offers daily motivation through smart run reminders, challenges from friends and even alerts informing when the weather is right to get outside. Training data, including pace, distance and heart rate are available at a glance, and through shared run summaries, the app promotes friendly competition, even allowing users to send fist bumps to each other, right from the wrist.

Rumor: the 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus is coming next year

Forget the iPhone X; it’s already old news. I want the iPhone Plus.

In a note to clients — as noted by AppleInsider — KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple has a 6.5-inch OLED iPhone planned for the second half of 2018 that would be the general size of a Plus-sized iPhone and add an edge-to-edge OLED display.

The iPhone X sports a 5.8-inch display. Kuo says the tech giant is also working on a new LCD model with a large 6.1-inch display that will be targeted toward the low-end and mid-range smartphone markets.

The LCD model will "differ significantly" from the OLED models, according to Kuo. For instance, it will pack a lower-resolution display to keep pricing between $650 and $750. However, Kuo adds that the LCD model will feature Face ID and advanced cameras to replace Touch ID.

How to turn your iPad into the best digital photo...

You can easily spend between $100 and $200 on a Wi-Fi digital photo frame, but these often have clunky interfaces for syncing photos and the displays can be quite poor. A better solution may be repurposing an old iPad or putting your current iPad in photo frame mode for special occasions.

Apple used to include a handy photo slideshow button on the iPad lock screen years ago, but this feature was abandoned with iOS 7 and later. While I’d love to see this feature return in the future, it’s possible to create a Wi-Fi digital photo frame mode for your iPad using built-in features in iOS today.

Qualcomm rejects Broadcom’s takeover bid

Qualcomm has rejected Broadcom’s $130 billion takeover bid, contending the offer “dramatically undervalues” the company’s position in mobile technology and comes with “significant regulatory uncertainty,” according to Law 360.

Last week Broadcom offered to buy Qualcomm in a deal worth $130 billion. The U.S. wireless and broadband giant said it would be willing to offer $70 per share in cash and stock for the world’s dominate supplier of broadband processors. It’s uncertain how such a deal would have affected the legal battle between Apple and Qualcomm, but now the point is apparently moot.

In January, Apple filed a lawsuit against Qualcomm, alleging the chip supplier demanded unfair terms for its...

The analyst also says that, given the demand for the iPhone 8 Plus being greater than that of the iPhone 8, production of the smaller smartphone is expected to fall between 50% and 60% in the holiday quarter. Kuo believes that the iPhone 8 Plus is "cannibalizing demand" for the iPhone 8, and some of Apple's manufacturing partners will switch production lines from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone X to work out supply and demand balance issues.
