Fyre Festival turns to chaos as soon as it began

A supposedly opulent music festival on a private island in the Bahamas, which was plugged as an unprecedented V.I.P. event by Instagram influencers including Kendall Jenner and Emily Ratajkowski, descended into dysfunction and disarray as soon as it began on Thursday and has since been postponed indefinitely, organizers said.

Sounds like an incredible scam. Tickets sold for $1,000 to $12,000 for the festival.

Letter Opener: Open Winmail.dat, MSG and XPS files

My thanks to Letter Opener for sponsoring The Loop this week.

Letter Opener for macOS

Working together with Windows users shouldn’t be problematic at all. Still, some email messages can not be natively read by the Mac and are packed into Winmail.dat or MSG files that have to be extracted and displayed somehow. Letter Opener for macOS does that with a simple double-click!

Letter Opener for macOS Mail

The plugin to stop the Winmail.dat file flood for good.

If Winmail.dat files are a reoccurring problem, Letter Opener for macOS Mail is the solution. Installed into Mail it opens and displays the files directly inside Apples Mail application, so the user can forget about Winmail.dat files entirely.

Apple's Lexus RX450h test vehicle hits the road...

That didn't take long. About two weeks after Apple gained permission from the State of California to test out its Project Titan autonomous-car technology, an "anonymous source" provided Bloomberg with pictures and an animated GIF sequence showing the vehicle on the streets.

What you see isn't that pretty; the white Lexus RX450h SUV is covered with a bunch of sensors, and it honestly looks like something that a couple of college students would have cooked up in their dorm room. Bloomberg had an industry expert take a look at the photos, and it appears that's close to the truth -- these are all off-the-shelf sensors, with none of them being...

iCloud.com gains dynamic wallpaper

Do the Bokeh Pokeh: The iCloud.com login screen

OK, so this isn't big news, but it's actually quite interesting. iCloud.com, which has displayed a static, blue-to-yellow gradient background for the past three years, now has a dynamic wallpaper on both the login and "home" screens.

The backdrop features what I'd refer to as "floating bokeh," referring to the blurred, out of focus patches of light seen in the background of photos that are focused on a foreground object. Those blobs of light actually react to where the mouse pointer appears on the screen, changing direction to head towards the pointer.

Go try it out. You know you want to...

∞ AirPods, song skipping, and volume

I love my AirPods. I am happy with the sound quality and I love the convenience and the cleverness of the design. Clearly, a tremendous amount of thought has been put into the many and varied use AirPod use cases:

  • Open the case near your iPhone and you are connected automatically.
  • Pull an AirPod out of your ear and the music or video you are playing pauses.
  • Drop the AirPods back in the case and they charge automatically.
  • Double-tap to interact with Siri.

There are two use cases, however, that just don’t work for me.

  • Skip to the next song (something I do reasonably often)
  • Adjust the volume (either due to a song being mixed loud, or my circumstances/environment changing)

In either case, you either need to pull your phone out of your pocket, fire up an Apple Watch app, or you need to ask Siri to help. While these are all fine solutions, they are far less efficient than the solutions I’ve long had...

Apple Music + Musical.ly = Love

Musical.ly

Musical.ly is a fun music video app that lets users create their own music videos, then share them with others. Re/Code reports that the app, which now uses song snippets from UK-based provider 7digital, will start using Apple Music content in addition to that from 7digital beginning this weekend.

The deal is a win-win for both Apple and Musical.ly: Apple gets to promote Apple Music through the Musical.ly app, while Musical.ly will be expanding from 30 countries to 120 thanks to the depth of licensing deals Apple has.

Musical.ly has been in service for almost three years and is just now becoming extremely popular with teenagers. If Apple can attract part of that teen crowd to Apple Music, its subscription service may see an increase in...

A quick glimpse of Apple’s self driving car tech

Bloomberg:

The white Lexus RX450h SUV emerged from an Apple facility this week and was kitted out with an array of sensors, according to a person who saw the vehicle and provided photos to Bloomberg News. The sensors included Velodyne Lidar Inc.’s top-of-the-range 64-channel lidar, at least two radar and a series of cameras. The sensors appear to be products bought off the shelf from suppliers, rather than custom-made, according to an industry expert who saw the photos.

Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou to meet with Trump

The sources did not disclose details of the first-ever encounter between the two. But with Trump’s persistent pledge to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S., and Gou’s dogged determination to acquire the memory chip business of embattled Japanese conglomerate Toshiba, the two will likely exchange their views on related issues.

A lot at stake here. Trump wants Apple to build in the US. Lots of resistance to that, both in terms of logistics and financial impact.

Apple to hold Q2 2017 conference call on Tuesday,...

Come next Tuesday, Apple shall once again reveal where it stands where units of currency are concerned.

Apple will hold its Q2 conference call on Tuesday, May 2nd in the early afternoon at 2 PM PST.

Last quarter, Apple’s revenues shrunk for the first time in recent memory. At the time, Apple suggested that its next quarter would generate between $51.5 and $53.5 billion in revenue, which would make it a second straight quarter of slight year-over-year revenue growth.

During the conference call, some things to watch out for will include iPhone sales, Apple’s growth in the Chinese marketplace, what revenues Apple’s services are generating and a general idea as to how the Apple Watch is selling (even if Apple has yet to release specific sales numbers).

Users will also see how Mac sales are doing and if they’ll continue to trend upwards and whether the iPad turnaround has begun following the introduction of a stripped-down $329 model and the updated iPad...

Lexus RX450s SUV spotted using Apple’s self-driving...

Less than two weeks after snagging permission to test it test its autonomous-car technology in California, Apple appears to be testing its software on California’s public roads.

A white Lexus RX450h SUV was seen emerging from an Apple facility, complete with a battery of attached sensors. The sensors included Velodyne Lidar Inc.’s top-of-the-range 64-channel lidar, at least two radar and a series of cameras. The sensors appear to be products bought off the shelf from suppliers, rather than custom-made, according to an industry expert who saw the photos.

An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles cleared Apple to test its software with three vehicles earlier this month. Apple’s “Project Titan”, as it’s been internally dubbed, seems to be an autonomous car project headed up by Apple veteran executive Bob Mansfield. Mansfield took over leadership of the project in 2016 and is said to have reined in the “Apple Car”...

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has released a 58-page plan that would reverse most of the Obama-era net neutrality rules, most notably one that classifies ISPs as common carriers. His proposed rules will face an initial vote on 18 May 2017, and the FCC is hearing comments until then. Last time the FCC sought public comment on net neutrality, it was flooded with 3.7 million submissions in favor of requiring broadband providers to treat all traffic equally, rather than selling preferential “fast lane” access to the highest bidders. Any bets on how many comments the FCC gets this time?

Why peer-to-peer Apple Pay is a great idea

Even in 2017, paying for things is still mostly terrible—even more so now that a multitude of options seem to confront us every time we step up to a register: Do I swipe? Insert my card? Enter a PIN? Sign my name?

When Apple Pay launched in 2014, it came with the promise of reducing much of that complexity. Just tap your phone or Apple Watch to the reader and you’re done. That hasn’t exactly panned out, thanks to both the fragmentation of payment methods and less-than-universal adoption of Apple Pay.

Still, given the inroads that Apple has made in paying businesses, it’s somewhat surprising that the company hasn’t yet jumped headfirst into person-to-person payments. However, if a report in Recode this week is any indication, Apple may be eyeing just such a move. And the benefits for its users could be tremendous.

Apple Patent Hints At Wirelessly Charging Your...

According to AppleInsider, "Apple is experimenting with medium- to long-distance wireless charging technologies that could one day allow users to charge up their iPhones with nothing more than a Wi-Fi router." From the report: Detailed in Apple's patent application for "Wireless Charging and Communications Systems With Dual-Frequency Patch Antennas" is a method for transferring power to electronic devices over frequencies normally dedicated to data communications. In its various embodiments, the invention notes power transfer capabilities over any suitable wireless communications link, including cellular between 700 MHz and 2700 MHz, and Wi-Fi operating at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. More specifically, the document's claims apply to millimeter wave 802.11ad spectrum channels currently in use by the WiGig standard, which operates over the 60 GHz frequency band. Theoretically, the proposal opens the door to wire-free charging from in-home Wi-Fi routers to cellular nodes and even satellite...

Purported iPhone 8 clear case lacks rear Touch ID...

The latest iPhone 8 leak is an image of a purported case for the device, via KKSneakLeaks. This (admittedly) bare bones clear case gives some clues as to the device’s characteristics by the shape and cutouts in the accessory. Most prominently, the case includes a camera cutout that would snugly fit the vertically-stacked dual camera that we have seen so much in recent weeks.

It also has a noticeably longer power button and notably lacks any hole for a rear Touch ID sensor to reside. This again supports the idea that Apple will successfully integrate the fingerprint scanner into the display, rather than an earlier leak which placed the sensor below the Apple logo on the back. The general proportions of the part also confirms that the physical size of the device is...

Inside Jimmy Iovine’s video plans for Apple Music

“A music service needs to be more than a bunch of songs and a few playlists,” says Iovine, 64. “I’m trying to help Apple Music be an overall movement in popular culture, everything from unsigned bands to video. We have a lot of plans.” Apple Music’s foray into video programming could be a temporary dalliance, but if Iovine succeeds, the world’s wealthiest company could increase its investment, routinely competing for top projects. “We have the freedom, because it’s Apple, to make one show, three shows, see what works, see what doesn’t work until it feels good,” Iovine says.

He’s right. Apple has the luxury to be very patient while it searches for the exact video strategy that works. They don’t have to fund new TV series just to jump into the mix with everyone else doing the same thing. Even those companies are watching to see what Apple will do.

The new Apple product would compete with offerings from big U.S. banks as well as PayPal, its millennial-popular subsidiary Venmo, as well as Square Cash in the increasingly competitive world of digital money-transfers. Apple has also recently held discussions with Visa about creating its own pre-paid cards that would run on the Visa debit network and which would be tied to the new peer-to-peer service, sources told Recode. People would be able to use the Apple cards to...

More detailed alleged iPhone 8 schematic surfaces,...

Although there are still many doubts about the iPhone 8 rumored design, mocked up above, a new schematic has surfaced on Weibo today. This drawing (embedded after the break below) is a more detailed version of what we saw yesterday and includes label annotations for many components.

The new dual front and (vertical) back cameras are visible and a rear Touch ID sensor is nowhere in sight, again implying it will be integrated into the OLED display. What’s most interesting about this latest leak though is that it indicates the parts used by the iPhone 8 for wireless charging …

FCC asks whether to 'keep, modify, or eliminate...

A U.S. Federal Communications Commission proposal to scrap the foundation for its own 2015 net neutrality rules nevertheless asks for public comment on whether it should "keep, modify, or eliminate" basic protections.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai's proposal, announced Wednesday, would remove the FCC's two-year-old classification of broadband as a broadly regulated, telecom-like service. But the text of the plan, released Thursday, suggests the FCC will consider retaining some rules prohibiting broadband providers from selectively blocking or slowing web-based content and services.

Rumors about an Apple-backed peer-to-peer payments system that could compete with services like Square Cash, PayPal's Venmo, and Google Wallet have been floating around for years. Those rumors still haven't amounted to anything yet, but a new report from Recode indicates that Apple is still interested and that it's in talks with banks and other "payments industry partners" about launching a peer-to-peer payments service later this year.

If launched, the service would likely fall under the Apple Pay umbrella. Right now, Apple Pay supports online and in-app payments and in-...

Laurene Powell Jobs to speak on philanthropy at Code...

It's rare when the public hears from the widow of Steve Jobs, but Laurene Powell Jobs will be speaking at next month's Code conference about her approach to philanthropy. Unlike her husband's famously well scripted and rehearsed onstage "performances," Powell Jobs will converse with California senator Kamala Harris about the work of her organization -- the Emerson Collective -- and how she feels philanthropy should benefit society as a whole.

According to a Forbes writeup earlier this year, the combination of the Laurene Powell Jobs Trust and Powell Jobs' personal fortune has an estimated net worth of $20 billion. The trust owns 2.5% of Disney, while Powell Jobs owns 4%. One would expect that she would own a larger stake in the company her late husband co-founded -- Apple -- but you'd be wrong. She owns just 0.7% of Apple.

Automatic, the maker of the Automatic Pro and Automatic Lite devices that link to an iPhone to track and read driving data, has been purchased by satellite radio provider SiriusXM for over $100 million. According to a blog post breaking the news, the brands will remain separate and Automatic will continue to focus on the connected car.

Automatic's product line began in 2013 with the Automatic Link. Plugged into the onboard diagnostic port that has been in most cars since 1996, the device sends drive tracking information and diagnostic reports to a connected iPhone app. Last year, the company abandoned the original Automatic Link except for minimal functions, replacing the device with two models. The Automatic Lite is similar to the original device, while the...
