The Mac is in the back seat, especially the Mac Pro

Mark Gurman, Bloomberg:

Interviews with people familiar with Apple’s inner workings reveal that the Mac is getting far less attention than it once did. They say the Mac team has lost clout with the famed industrial design group led by Jony Ive and the company’s software team. They also describe a lack of clear direction from senior management, departures of key people working on Mac hardware and technical challenges that have delayed the roll-out of new computers.

Combine this with Tim Cook’s response to employees in an internal memo:

“Some folks in the media have raised the question about whether we’re committed to desktops,” Cook wrote. “If there’s any doubt about that with our teams, let me be very clear: we have great...

Apple’s AirPods have now officially joined the NES Classic and Hatchimals as the high demand, hardest to get your hands on, marked up outrageously on eBay, must have gifts of the season.

Apple added AirPods to their personal shopper list so you can check stock at your local Apple Stores. But iStockNow is showing zero stock. Anywhere. And Apple is showing first availability as February 13th.

Scorchingly hot product.

Almost a year after adding Live Video to its app, Facebook has announced that it is introducing a Live Audio feature that allows live broadcasts of audio-only content. Or, as CNET wryly described it, radio.

iFixit publishes full teardown of AirPods, reveals...

The cool cats at iFixit have just published their full teardown of Apple’s new wireless AirPods along with the charging kit that arrives with the unit. Through the teardown, iFixit cites a multitude of closely knit components within the AirPods, along with a few “quality issues” within the charging case that may be the reason for the months-long delay of the wireless headphones.

The teardown began by separating the speaker portion of the AirPod from the rest of the device, uncovering a miniature coaxial cable and two IR proximity sensors, which allow the AirPods to detect whenever they’re inside an ear, and play/pause music accordingly.

iFixit cited a “waterfall of glue” inside the base of the AirPod that essentially surrounds the charging point for the...

Apple lowers prices of assorted USB-C adapters until...

If you thought Apple’s USB-C adapter prices were a bit steep, there’s a price break until the end of March, 2017.

Apple on Friday lowered the prices for many of its USB-C adapters, which are necessary for users who want to connect their devices to the new laptop. But the price cuts only last until the end of this year.

The new MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, which have a different connector than that of USB-A devices and cables like the iPhone sync cable. That means you need to buy an adapter. Depending on your devices, you may need to buy several adapters.

The company offered the following comments:

“We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition. We want to...

Sparkle is an easy-to-use, visually oriented website...

By Aaron Lee

River Design's Sparkle is a handy website builder for those who prefer to do things visually. The app translates any text and graphic layout to HTML and provides Mac users with a fun way to build websites visually.

Sparkle gives Mac users a great way to build website visually, a natural fit for people who don't think in symbols and don't want to be constrained by predefined templates. Former iWeb users will find themselves at home with Sparkle, going well beyond what iWeb offered.

Sparkle features include menus, image galleries, maps, social media and more. For example the menu system scales from manual set up to fully automatic with synchronization to the website structure, whereas image galleries not only generate @2x and @3x retina images, but they generate a full set with thumbnails, for each image, for each device. Maps are based on the industry standard ones from Google, Sparkle integrates easy address lookup and a number of...

External Link: Is the Mac Struggling Inside Apple?

Over at Bloomberg Technology, Mark Gurman lays out the case that Apple is indeed marginalizing the Mac internally, as we had suggested recently. Gurman cites numerous sources within the company who have revealed troubling changes. These days, the Mac hardware team gets less face time with Jony Ive’s design group, and managers have become more likely to float multiple competing ideas, meaning that time spent on losing designs ends up wasted. On the software side, Gurman says that there is no longer a dedicated Mac operating system group, with all engineers on a single team and many of them focusing on iOS first. Even Apple employees are asking if Mac desktops remain strategically important, which prompted a response from Tim Cook that was positive, if vague.

iFixIt tears down Apple’s AirPods

The gang at iFixIt, which tears apart tech products and looks at their innards, has torn apart the new Apple AirPods. Here are the highlights:

A set of AirPods contains three batteries, one in the case and one in each earpiece. The earpiece battery is a 93 milliwatt hour battery, which is about 1% of the charge capacity in an iPhone 7. The battery in the case weighs in at 1.52 Wh—about 16 times the power capacity of the earpiece batteries.

iFixIt’s X-ray imagery (provided by Creative Electron) shows quality issues in the AirPod case’s processor. Excessive empty spaces in the solder, known as voiding, “could be evidence of low quality standards, or a rushed product release.”

Accessing any case component is impossible without destroying the outer casing, earning the AirPods a 0/10 on iFixIt’s repairability scale.

Future Apple Watches could have woven display bands that display image. Apple has filed for a patent (number 9,521,885) for a woven fabric includes light transmissive fibers woven into the fabric to provide a visual display. The fabric may also be used as part of the housing of an electronic device.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that modern portable electronic devices may be carried by a user or they may be removably attached to the person of a user by means of straps or other tethers which may be decorative tethers. These tethers prevent the user from dropping or losing the device and function as a convenience to the user.

Apple says that, while useful for such purposes, these tethers are generally decorative and serve no useful information providing, or other...

AirPods teardown reveals the magic and glue that...

Sometimes it's just not worth it to peek behind the curtain and find out how the magic happens. That's the feeling you get from iFixit after the teardown champs took on their latest challenge: Apple's AirPods.

These tiny wearables pack a lot of power into a small space. They've got Bluetooth, beamforming microphones, optical sensors, a motion accelerometer, a 93 milliwatt battery (we'll get to that), and speakers. It's no surprise there's little room among all those components for grace and an easy entry point.

Uber’s self-driving cars having problems with bike...

Uber has admitted that there is a “problem” with the way autonomous vehicles cross bike lanes, raising serious questions about the safety of cyclists days after the company announced it would openly defy California regulators over self-driving vehicles.

It’s interesting that this was observed before the launch of the self-driving cars.

LG UltraFine 5K Display now available to order

The LG UltraFine 5K Display, which Apple touts as the high-end external display to use with the new MacBook Pros, is finally available to order for US$974. Orders were initially estimated to ship in 3-5 business days, but that’s quickly slipping.

However, Apple has extended the $974 pricing until March 31. After this, the price will be $1,299.

The LG UltraFine 5K Display — which is 18.3 inches high, 24.6 inches wide, 9.4 inches deep, and weighs 18.7 pounds — boasts a 27.inch, 5120-by-2880 resolution, 14.7 million pixels, P3 wide color gamut, and 500 cd/m² of brightness.

A single Thunderbolt 3 cable (included) provides up to 85W of charging power to your MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports. And three downstream USB-C ports (5 Gbps) offer additional connectivity and power to compatible devices and accessories.

Opinion: Apple’s product secrecy may create ‘magic...

When Apple unveiled its latest MacBook Pro models, making particular reference to their ability to drive multiple 4K and 5K monitors, some wondered whether the company was readying itself to exit the desktop market – as it has already done for displays.

Even Apple’s own employees appeared to share this concern, with one asking on the company’s internal Apple Web system ‘Are Mac desktops strategic for us?’.

Tim Cook was quick to offer reassurance, stating that the desktop market was ‘very strategic’ for Apple, and that the company has ‘great desktops in our roadmap.’ There were, though, a couple of problems with this assurance …

Apple reportedly in talks to manufacture in India

Apple is reportedly discussing with the Indian government the possibility of manufacturing its products in the country. In a November letter, the Cupertino, California-based comps y outlined its plans and sought financial incentives to move ahead, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Making goods such as iPhones locally would allow Apple to open its own stores in India, helping build its brand in a country where it has less than 5% of a booming smartphone market. Getting a foothold in India has been a challenge for Apple. The company has opened its retail stores in a number of countries around the world, but not in India. The country has restrictive real estate investment laws for foreign companies.

Tim Cook reaffirms Apple's commitment to the...

The Mac Pro and Mac mini have languished for years. The iMac faces increased competition from rivals like Microsoft’s Surface Studio. The MacBook is thinner and lighter than ever, but not more powerful. Critics say it’s clear that Apple has put the Mac on the back burner. In a memo to employees, CEO Tim Cook said nothing could be further from the truth: “We have great desktops in our roadmap,” he wrote, according to TechCrunch. “Nobody should worry about that.”

At Apple, Mac Is Getting Far Less Attention - How It...

Apple CEO Tim Cook may have assured employees that the company is committed to Mac computers, but people working in the Mac team say the company now pays far less attention to the computer lineup, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who has been right just about every time with Apple scoops. From his report: Interviews with people familiar with Apple's inner workings reveal that the Mac is getting far less attention than it once did. They say the Mac team has lost clout with the famed industrial design group led by Jony Ive and the company's software team. They also describe a lack of clear direction from senior management, departures of key people working on Mac hardware and technical challenges that have delayed the roll-out of new computers. While the Mac generates about 10 percent of Apple sales, the company can't afford to alienate professional designers and other business customers. After all, they helped fuel Apple's revival in the late 1990s. In a stinging critique, Peter...

Apple and others to integrate railroad grade...

On Monday, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a recommendation asking 11 tech and delivery companies to work on integrating the locations of more than 200,000 rail grade crossings into digital mapping products. The companies are Apple, Google, HERE, TomTom, INRIX, MapQuest, Microsoft, Omnitracs, OpenStreetMap US, Sensys Networks, Streetlight Data, Teletrac and United Parcel Service of America..

The call from the NTSB comes after a rise in accidents at grade crossings. The New York Times reports that Apple is already working to add NTSB rail data to Maps after the Federal Railway Administration asked for integration back in April 2016.

Grade crossings are defined as the intersections of rail lines and roadways. The NTSB cited the...

After bragging about beating AirPods to market,...

Accessory maker Bragi has announced delays for its upcoming cord-free earbud product called “The Headphone.”

Part of Germany-based Bragi’s story has always been that it was one of the first to market with a truly wireless, cord-free earbud, The Dash. That product didn’t receive glowing reviews over the last year, but when the company announced a less expensive and refined version with The Headphone, it looked like it could be a true competitor to Apple’s wireless AirPods. But the AirPods officially launched last week and are arriving to customers this week, and now Bragi is announcing a delay to its product that was supposed to ship for the earliest pre-order customers in time for Christmas. The product’s estimated shipping date was later pushed back to early January, but it looks like Bragi will miss that date for some pre-orders...

Tests show AirPods can take a licking, keep on...

I'm showing by age by using that old Timex watch tagline made famous by John Cameron Swayze, but it appears that Apple's new wireless AirPods can put up with a lot of abuse and still keep working. 9to5Mac put a pair of AirPods through a lot of abuse, putting the buds and charging case through drop tests of up to ten feet, submersion in water, and even a wash cycle with detergent. To quote blogger Benjamin Mayo, "Incredibly, they still work after all of that with only minor scuffs."

Since Apple never disclosed whether or not AirPods were waterproof, many athletes were concerned that the earbuds would be damaged by something as...

After unexpectedly receiving my AirPods two days earlier than the scheduled delivery date, I’ve been enjoying them for the last few hours. Tim Cook Assures Employees That It Is Committed To...

Apple CEO Tim Cook has assured the employees that the company is committed to the computer lineups and that a desktop computer is certainly on the way. From a report on TechCrunch: "Some folks in the media have raised the question about whether we're committed to desktops," Cook wrote. "If there's any doubt about that with our teams, let me be very clear: we have great desktops in our roadmap. Nobody should worry about that." Cook cites the far better performance of desktop computers, including screen sizes, memory, storage and more variety in I/O (ha) as a reason that they are "really important, and in some cases critical, to people." So no matter how you feel about the state of the Mac at the moment, you have new machines to look forward to. No mention of whether that meant iMac or Mac Pro or both, but at the very least it's encouraging to those of us who couldn't live without a desktop computer.
