∞ What happens to Animoji when you cover the...

Frederick Riedel used stickers to cover the:

  • Infrared camera
  • Flood Illuminator
  • Dot Projector

on his iPhone X. But Animoji still worked without them. Portrait mode stopped working. Face ID stopped working too. So the stickers were doing their job.

Why do Animoji still work? Pop over to the main Loop post for the detailed explanation. Pretty interesting.

iOS 11.2 accelerated wireless charging speed vs...

Matt Birchler compared the time it took to charge an iOS device using:

  • Stock wired charger
  • Apple 29W charger
  • Wireless charging (available on iPhone 8, 8 Plus, iPhone X)
  • Accelerated wireless charging (New with iOS 11.2)

Follow the link, check out the graph. To really get a sense of the difference, look how many minutes it takes each to get to a 40% charge (the second horizontal gray line).

The 29W charger took just under 30 minutes. Accelerated charging took about an hour and 40 minutes.

I don’t know how rigorous this analysis was, but wow, what a difference. We could be seeing the limitations of inductive charging, or we could see these numbers improve with each new release. But as is, what price convenience?

Apple wants to better protect iPhone and iPad...

Apple wants to make iPhones and iPads more resistant to drops and hits, especially the camera components of the devices. The tech giant has filed for a patent (number 20170331993) for an “impact absorber.”

In the patent filing, Apple notes that the advent of small, mobile multipurpose devices such as smartphones and tablet or pad devices has resulted in a need for high-resolution, small form factor cameras for integration in the devices. Some small form factor cameras may incorporate optical image stabilization (OIS) mechanisms.

Some small form factor cameras may incorporate an autofocus (AF) mechanism whereby the object focal distance can be adjusted to focus an object plane in front of the camera at an image plane to be captured by the image sensor. In some such autofocus mechanisms, the optical lens is moved as a single rigid body along the optical axis (referred to as the Z axis) of the camera to refocus the camera.

In addition, Apple says that high image...

GymKit launches today, automatically syncs workout...

Benjamin Mayo, 9to5Mac:

The idea is that the watch and the paired gym machine have better knowledge about different aspects of the workout. GymKit allows that data to be shared back and forth, as appropriate.

At the end of the session, the watch saves all the relevant data to its local database (no iPhone required) and the gym equipment is wiped of any personal data.

Walk up to a GymKit compatible machine, tap your Apple Watch (pairs via NFC, similar to Apple Pay), and the machine automatically loads the appropriate workout data from your watch. When your workout is finished, your results are saved back to your Apple Watch.

This is brilliant.

Nomad’s leather cases for the iPhone X offer...

Nomad has released five handsome leather cases for the iPhone X, all of which are compatible with Qi wireless charging. The variety means that at least one of the reasonably priced cases will suit everyone — unless he’s looking for a “flavor” rather than rustic brown.

However, rustic brown is the perfect hue for these cases. The Horween leather is vegetable-tanned, and imbued with natural waxes and oils. The surface isn’t sprayed with a synthetic sealant, so it develops a good-looking patina over time (for best care, use a quality leather conditioner.) The cases are meant to show the scuffs and marks they endure over time, which adds to their authenticity. Of course, if you’re looking for a case without flaws, these aren’t for you.

The Leather Folio is a $49.95 case designed for those who want their iPhone X case to double as a wallet. It holds 3-6 credit cards and folded cash. If your current...

iPhone X now ships in 2-3 weeks from Apple Online...

The availability of iPhone X continues to improve. The Apple Online Store is now reporting 2-3 week delivery estimates for new iPhone X orders, across both Space Gray and Silver colors on all carriers. Reports indicated that iPhone X supply would be improving throughout November, after the initial production holdups, and that is certainly corroborated here.

It’s also true that the rush of early adopter demand for the phone has likely waned at this point, although the holiday shopping season is always a busy period for iPhones sales.

Square Cash App for iOS adds Bitcoin support,...

Square Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar wants to prove that cryptocurrency, especially Bitcoin, can be a genuine financial tool with the latest version of its Cash App for iOS now supporting the protocol.

“We’re a payment innovator. And therefore I think it behooves us to always know, where are our payments going?” Friar told “Mad Money” host Jim Cramer on Wednesday. “When we develop products at Square, we spend a lot of time listening to what our customers want, and what we heard from individuals – so this isn’t sellers asking to accept bitcoin, this is individuals using Square Cash to make payments… saying, ‘We want an easy way to buy and sell bitcoin.'”

Friar than added that the fastest way to understand a new product is to build products around them.

Bitcoin, in turn, has experienced a surge in both popularity and price over the course of 2017 and briefly gained 11 percent following Friar’s announcement.

“Ultimately, you have to be out there...

New study cites Apple Watch as being able to help...

You can add “helping to detect sleep apnea” and “helping to detect hypertension” to the list of nifty things the Apple Watch can do.

A new study released from health startup Cardiogram and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) suggests that wearable devices like the Apple Watch, Fitbit and others are able to accurately detect common but serious conditions like hypertension and sleep apnea.

Cardiogram and UCSF had previously demonstrated the Apple Watch’s ability to detect abnormal heart rhythms with 97 percent accuracy. The new study states that the Apple Watch can detect sleep apnea with a 90 percent accuracy and hypertension with an 82 percent accuracy.

The American Sleep Apnea Association has estimated that 22 million adults in the U.S. suffer from sleep apnea, with another 80 percent of cases of moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea undiagnosed. This affected person can stop breathing in their sleep and can possibly lead to death.

CCS Insight is predicting that Apple will introduce a Netflix competitor next year, according to Investopedia. The UK market research firm thinks the tech giant will enter the market in a big way next year, launching a streaming video service that will be home “to a slew of original content.”

When you look at Apple, it has a very strong hardware offering and their services business is on the march," Paolo Pescatore, vice president of multiplay and media at CCS Insight, said. "The real battleground is in the area of original content, but original content would feature prominently and Apple would be very well placed to do that."

According to CCS Insights, launching a video streaming service could be a way for Apple to increase its revenue from services, which was...

For now, Amazon has allegedly jettisoned plans to offer a "skinny" bundle of cable and broadcast TV channels, owing to low expected profit margins and the same problem rumored to have halted Apple's bundle: resistance from networks.

∞ Watch these BMW gestures and think about bringing...

[VIDEO] This morning, I dug around and found the video embedded in the main Loop post, which shows off the gestures available on the latest BMWs (they’ve been available for a few years, but the sensors/gestures have evolved each year, getting better and better).

Think about the idea of having a similar set of gestures available on the Mac. The idea of tech on your phone or Mac sensing your presence, attention, or movements, clearly add value to the user experience.

The idea of a touch screen Mac is different than a gesture-aware Mac. I think the gestures on the BMW would work well on a Mac. Not necessarily the same gestures, but similar gestures. Especially if the gestures could be subtle.

Imagine an incoming phone call, while you are typing away at your Mac. You lift your hand from the keyboard, make a quick swiping gesture, and the call is dismissed. Or you make a c’mon gesture, and the call is answered.

I see a lot of possibilities here.

You probably don’t need to worry about someone...

Taylor Hatmaker, TechCrunch:

Touted as the iPhone X’s new flagship form of device security, Face ID is a natural target for hackers. Just a week after the device’s release, Vietnamese research team Bkav claims to have cracked Apple’s facial recognition system using a replica face mask that combines printed 2D images with three-dimensional features. The group has published a video demonstrating its proof of concept, but enough questions remain that no one really knows how legitimate this purported hack is.

I believe the term should be spoofed, not hacked. The video in the post shows Bkav using a homemade mask trying to spoof a person’s face registered using Face ID. Hacking would be breaking in and stealing credentials, or installing a back door, that sort of thing.

That said, something doesn’t sit right looking at that video. When I first saw it, my instinctive reaction was that it was fake. But even if the mask was successful in spoofing the user’s face, I...

Why you should not rely on iCloud Photo Library as...

Glenn Fleishman, Macworld:

iCloud Photo Library, when it fits your needs, is a great way to avoid having to manage where your images and videos wind up. You capture video on your iPhone or drag an image into Photos in macOS, and it just syncs everywhere while making a central copy at iCloud.

And:

However, there’s one configuration I can’t advise, and Macworld reader Eric writes in with a question that prompts a discussion. He’s wondering if he could rely on iCloud to be his “main backup of images.” The short answer is no, but it’s not about distrust in Apple’s technical abilities. Rather, about the frailty of all material things, and the risk of putting all one’s digital eggs in one basket, no matter how firmly the basket-storing company is holding that basket.

Interesting read, some good insight on iCloud Photo Library.

Rumor: 2018 iPad Pros will feature octa-core...

Chinese website MyDrivers — as noted by MacRumors — says Apple’s 2018 iPad Pros will feature octa-core processors. That prediction is based on Taiwanese supplier TSMC's improved 7nm manufacturing process.

The report claims the eight cores in the “A11X Bionic chip” will include three high-performance "Monsoon" cores and five energy-efficient "Mistral" cores.

Like the A11 Bionic chip in the latest iPhone models, which is built on a 10-nanometer process, the A11X chip will reportedly feature TSMC's integrated fan-out wafer level packaging, or InFO WLP for short. The chip will also presumably include a next-generation M11 coprocessor and neural engine for artificial intelligence tasks, notes MacRumors.

Chance the rumor is true, according to the Sellers Research Group: 60%. I expect an A11 Bionic chip to pack two...

Director Steven Soderbergh secretly shot new horror...

Neil Hughes, Apple Insider:

Details on “Unsane” have slowly trickled out in recent months, including the fact that the film was shot in secret and entirely on Apple’s iPhone, according to Entertainment Weekly. The film stars Claire Foy, Juno Temple, and Jay Pharoah, with Pharoah describing the picture as “reality-horror type” with some similarities to Jordan Peele-created smash hit “Get Out.”

The movie was filmed this summer, meaning the best iPhone it could have been shot on was the iPhone 7 Plus.

I’m looking forward to seeing this movie in the theater, at the very least to get a sense of the look of an iPhone shot movie on the big screen. It will be interesting to compare the look of this film with future films shot on an iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X.

Also, I loved Get Out and am a big fan of Claire Foy, Jay Pharoah, Steven Soderbergh.

The Digital Citizens Alliance Executive Director Tom Galvin has issued a statement after TVAddons reported there is a "'99.99%" chance" that the millions of consumers using jailbroken Apple TV 2 devices to stream content are, "at risk of having their Kodi box used to send spam, DDoS attacks, distribute malware or even something as disgusting as child pornography."

"For years now we have seen cyber criminals using stolen content as the digital bait to infect consumers with malware and take over their devices. What's alarming is that these old dogs are quick to learn new tricks,” Galvin says. “As Digital Citizens warned earlier this year, streaming devices, like the one at risk in this report, are quickly becoming the...

Apple has agreed to give limited help to the Indian government develop an anti-spam mobile application for its iOS platform, after refusing to do so based on privacy concerns, according to “sources and documents” seen by Reuters.

The article says Apple execs flew to New Delhi in Octobr and told officials the company would help develop the app. The execs purportedly said iOS might not allow for some of the government’s requests, such as making call logs available within the app that would allow users to report them as spam, the official said.

Apple patent is for fast searching in a music...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 9,817,894) for “fast search in a music sharing environment.” It apparently involves iTunes Family Sharing and Apple Music with the goal of making searches faster for music data.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that users may get frustrated with having to enter a query into a search engine every time she wants to search for a specific type of data such as music info. What’s more, the user may become frustrated with an amount of time waiting to receive a response. As a result, users may begin looking for an alternative search engine that delivers a faster search response for the specific type of data. Apple wants to address the issue.

The patent involves a method of a fast-search server includes processing a character of a query of music data, referencing the character with a reverse index of a music database, determining that the character matches a data record of the music database using the reverse index and returning the...

Ranger iPhone X case looks great, but is a bit too...

WaterField Designs’ $89 Ranger iPhone X case is another of the company’s cool takes on the traditional holster. With magnetic closing systems that use Neodymium rare-earth magnets, it attaches securely to clothing, belts, work vests, or straps.

A Fidlock closure keeps the iPhone safeguarded inside the case. The bottom opening allows users to keep ear buds connected and keeps text and call notifications audible when the gadget is inside the case. Side openings provide access to volume and sleep buttons. A front leather pocket can hold earbuds or cash and a key.

The inside front panel is lined with scratch-free Ultrasuede that adds cushioning and helps clean the iPhone X’s screen as you insert and remove it from the case. I really like the holster design of the Ranger. It makes me feel like a cowboy, but, on a more practical level, it allows me to get to my iPhone X to answer a call or...

Apple thought to have sold 3.9 million Apple Watch...

At its most recent earnings call, Apple stated that its Apple Watch sales had grown 50 percent year-over-over, although the company has never revealed exact sales numbers. Estimates from Canalys suggest that unit sales almost hit 4 million for Apple Watch in the third quarter.

Canalys stated that the cellular version of the Apple Watch Series 3 has proven popular enough for demand to outstrip supply. The company also stated that wireless carriers have been surprised by the demand for the device.

Canalys estimated that roughly 800,000 of the 3.9 million Apple Watch units sold in the third quarter were the LTE model.

The Q3 calendar refers to July, August, and September. The Apple Watch Series 3 has only been available since the middle of September, Canalys estimating that roughly 25 percent of the Apple Watch units sold were Series 3 LTE models.

In China, the Apple Watch LTE access is currently disabled by the government. Canalys expects strong demand...
