Hands-on: Akitio Thunder3 Quad X – a four bay drive...

When it comes to Thunderbolt 3 support, there are a handful of companies that immediately come to mind. Akitio, a California-based innovator, is definitely one of those companies.

One of its first big Thunderbolt 3-equipped products, the Akitio Node, made headlines for its inclusion of a macOS-compatible Thunderbolt 3 chipset. Since then, it has released a variety of products that support the high-bandwidth interface.

The latest such release is the Akitio Thunder3 Quad X. Featuring a similar naming convention as earlier releases, the Thunder3 Quad X is notable for a design that pays homage to the classic Mac Pro “cheese grater” design.

Uber was hacked in 2016 and covered it up

Hackers stole the personal data of 57 million customers and drivers from Uber Technologies Inc., a massive breach that the company concealed for more than a year. This week, the ride-hailing firm ousted its chief security officer and one of his deputies for their roles in keeping the hack under wraps, which included a $100,000 payment to the attackers.

They simply neglected to tell anyone they had been hacked. There is nothing this company won’t do.

New Windows Search Interface Borrows Heavily From...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: Press clover-space on a Mac (aka apple-space or command-space to Apple users) and you get a search box slap bang in the middle of the screen; type things into it and it'll show you all the things it can find that match. On Windows, you can do the same kind of thing -- hit the Windows key and then start typing -- but the results are shown in the bottom left of your screen, in the Start menu or Cortana pane. The latest insider build of Windows, build 17040 from last week, has a secret new search interface that looks a lot more Mac-like. Discovered by Italian blog Aggiornamenti Lumia, set a particular registry key and the search box appears in the middle of the screen. The registry key calls it "ImmersiveSearch" -- hit the dedicated key, and it shows a simple Fluent-designed search box and results. This solution looks and feels a lot like Spotlight on macOS.

Why Apple's HomePod Is Three Years Behind...

Apple unveiled the HomePod, its first smart speaker to take on market-leading Amazon's Echo lineup of speakers, in June this year. Despite being three years late to the party, the HomePod has largely been pitched more as a speaker that sounds great instead of a device that sounds great but more importantly can also help you with daily chores. On top of this, Apple said last week it was delaying the shipment of HomePod from December this year to "early 2018." So why does a company, the market valuation of which is quickly reaching a trillion dollar, so behind its competitors? Bloomberg reports on Tuesday: Apple audio engineers had been working on an early version of the HomePod speaker for about two years in 2014 when they were blindsided by the Echo, a smart speaker from Amazon with a voice-activated assistant named Alexa. The Apple engineers jokingly accused one another of leaking details of their project to Amazon, then bought Echos so they could take them apart and see how they...

Nearly complete Apple Park shown in short drone video

Since construction began on Apple Park back in 2015, we've been following several drone pilots who have been capturing the progress of construction on the new Apple headquarters. Now that the campus is nearly complete, pilot/videographer Matthew Roberts of Maverick Solutions took one more flight to capture the latest changes.

A flyover of the newly-opened visitor center shows people standing on the roof of the structure where there's an observation deck. Sod has been installed many locations, and the pond that's inside the ring-shaped headquarters building finally has water in it. Outdoor food stations that are inside the ring are also nearing completion, while landscaping is still ongoing near the employee fitness center. As you'd surmise from this being the headquarters of the world's most valuable company, security checkpoints are now in operation.

Ireland closer to collecting back taxes from Apple

Ireland is closer to collecting €15B (about $15 billion) in Apple taxes following European Commission criticism that the country was dragging its feet.

The money traces back to an August European Commission (EU) ruling that Ireland gave Apple unfair tax incentives. Last year, the EU told Apple to repay the back taxes to the country, which had given Apple unfair tax breaks. The tech giant is supposed to put the money into an escrow account while appealing the decision. If Apple wins, it gets the money back.

However, according to Reuters, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar told Parliament: “We’ve indicated to them that we want the escrow account established and we want funds to be paid into the escrow account without further delay. We do not want to be in the situation where the Irish government has to...

Apple's New iPhone Built With Illegal Overtime...

Apple's main supplier in Asia has been employing high-school students working illegal overtime to assemble the iPhone X in an effort to catch up with demand after facing production delays, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing several teenagers involved. From a report: A group of 3,000 students from the Zhengzhou Urban Rail Transit School were sent to work at the local facility run by Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry, known as Foxconn, as part of a three-month stint that was billed as "work experience," and required to graduate, the Financial Times reported. Six of the students told the FT they routinely worked 11-hour days assembling Apple's flagship smartphone, which constitutes illegal overtime for student interns under Chinese law. Apple said an audit did find instances of student interns working overtime, adding that they were employed voluntarily, were compensated and provided benefits, but that they shouldn't have been allowed to work overtime.

Apple’s iPhone X Leather Folio is gorgeous, but...

Along with the iPhone X, Apple released the iPhone X Leather Folio. It’s as gorgeous as you’d expect, but, with a price tag of $99, it’s hard to recommend it over similar leather cases from companies such as Nomad.

Apple says the case — available in “cosmos blue” (my favorite), “taupe,” “berry” and black — is crafted from “specially tanned and finished European leather for a luxurious look and feel.” Think of it as the iPhone X version of the Smart Case for the iPad Pro. Open it, and the smartphone wakes up. Close it and it goes to sleep.

The Leather Folio’s interior sports a soft microfiber lining for added protection. You can keep it on all the time, even when you’re charging wirelessly.

Apple has confirmed a Financial Times report that high school students interning at Foxconn exceeded their legal hours while working on the iPhone X production line. The company has, however, denied claims that the students were forced to carry out the work as a condition of graduation from school.

The report relates to 3,000 high school students who take part in a three-month long work experience program …

Rumor: Apple collaborating with TSMC to develop...

Even with the iPhone X, which represents the first Apple product with an OLED screen only recently out the door, the company may be working on the next generation of screen technology.

It’s rumored that Apple is working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to develop microLED screens, which could supersede OLED over the next few years.

microLED screens take some of the key benefits of OLED over LCD yet further, offering even greater brightness, color saturation and power efficiency…

Per a DigiTimes article, Apple has reportedly downsized its R&D team for development of Micro LED display products in Longtan, northern Taiwan, due to issues related to mass transfer of Micro LED chips onto receiver substrates, according to sources from Taiwan’s upstream LED suppliers.

The slow progress in the development of the mass transfer process it thought to have impeded assorted panel makers from achieving volume production of Micro LED panels...

Are you waiting for the HomePod or buying another...

Last week, Apple announced that it was delaying the release of its HomePod smart speaker into 2018 in order to continue refining the product. Of course, that means Apple will miss the biggest shopping month of the year, but it will likely be worth the wait.

We outlined a few alternatives to the HomePod over the weekend, and now we’re curious: Are you going to hold out for the HomePod or buy another smart speaker instead?

iMac Pro Will Have An A10 Fusion Coprocessor For...

According to Apple firmware gurus Steven Troughton-Smith and Guilherme Rambo, the upcoming iMac Pro will feature an A10 Fusion coprocessor to enable two interesting new features. "The first is the ability for the iMac Pro to feature always-on 'Hey, Siri' voice command support, similar to what's currently available on more recent iPhone devices," reports The Verge. "[T]he bigger implication of the A10 Fusion is for a less user-facing function, with Apple likely to use the coprocessor to enable SecureBoot on the iMac Pro." From the report: In more practical terms, it means that Apple will be using the A10 Fusion chip to handle the initial boot process and confirm that software checks out, before passing things off to the regular x86 Intel processor in your Mac. It's not something that will likely change how you use your computer too much, like the addition of "Hey, Siri" support will, but it's a move toward Apple experimenting with an increased level of control over its software...

Google Is Working On Fuchsia OS Support For Apple...

An anonymous reader shares a report from Android Police: Google's in-development operating system, named "Fuchsia," first appeared over a year ago. It's quite different from Android and Chrome OS, as it runs on top of the real-time "Magenta" kernel instead of Linux. According to recent code commits, Google is working on Fuchsia OS support for the Swift programming language. If you're not familiar with it, Swift is a programming language developed by Apple, which can be used to create iOS/macOS/tvOS/watchOS applications (it can also compile to Linux). Apple calls it "Objective-C without the C," and on the company's own platforms, it can be mixed with existing C/Objective-C/C++ code (similar to how apps on Android can use both Kotlin and Java in the same codebase). We already know that Fuchsia will support apps written in Dart, a C-like language developed by Google, but it looks like Swift could also be supported. On Swift's GitHub repository, a pull request was created by a Google...

Apple Could Have Brought a Big iPhone X Feature To...

Steven Troughton-Smith, a prominent iOS developer best known for combing new software codes for references for upcoming features, over the weekend indicated that portrait mode lighting effects, a major feature in the current iPhone generation -- iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, could technically be added to iPhone 7 Plus from last year. The feature works like this: you take a picture, go to the photos app on your new iPhone and play with the "Lighting" effects. He writes: So yeah you just need to hexedit the metadata in the HEIC. Not quite sure where, I copied a whole section from an iPhone X Portrait Mode photo and it worked. Original photo taken on 7 Plus on iOS 11. Someone could automate this. Just to add insult to injury, if you AirDrop that photo back to the iPhone 7 Plus now it shows the Portrait Lighting UI, and lets you change mode. So Portrait Lighting is 100% an artificial software limitation. 7 Plus photos can have it, 7 Plus can do it.
