Apple looks into a ‘family sleep monitoring system’...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 20180028111) for a “family sleep monitoring system,” which would record the sleep parameters of family members by providing third party apps and a peripheral devices communicating with “mobile subscriber terminals” according to the age and interest of each family member. It would involve both iPhones, Macs, and Beddit sleep tracking hardware/software.

In the patent filing, Apple says there’s a need for a system for measuring sleep of all family members, especially of children, by providing customized peripherals and third party applications according to age and interest of each member. Apple’s proposed system would include a “distributed computer system and method that will serve for recording sleep of at least one user using a mobile subscriber terminal and a peripheral device arranged to communicate with the mobile subscriber terminal.”

The peripheral devices would be configured to communicate sleep data via an iOS app to the...

Apple patent involves an ambidextrous Mac mouse

Apple has been granted a patent (number 20180032158) for an ambidextrous mouse for use with Macs that’s configured for both left and right handed use.

The mouse may include right handed buttons on the front side of the mouse and left handed buttons on the back side of the mouse. The user may change the handedness of the mouse by rotating the mouse about a vertical axis of the mouse such that the left hand can use the left hand buttons and the right hand can use the right hand buttons.

The mouse may include a “handedness selection system” for configuring the mouse for right handed or left handed use even though the mouse has the capability for both right and left hands. In the patent filing, Apple notes that hog most mice designs work well, “there are continuing efforts to improve their form, feel and functionality.”

Of course, Apple files for — and is granted — lots of patents by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Many are for inventions that never see...

macOS and iOS market share both rise in January

According to the latest market share survey from NetMarketShare, the market share for both macOS and iOS both increased last month.

According to the report, among desktop operating systems, macOS had 8.21% of the global market share in January, up from from 8.06% percent in December (that’s global market share; in the U.S. it’s over 13%). April 2016’s 9.2% was an all-time high, according to NetMarketShare’s measurements. Windows remains dominant with 88.78%.

iOS had 29.52% in January, up from 29.52% in December. This compares to 68.639% for Android.

NetMarketShares’ monthly surveys don’t measure market share in terms of computer systems sold. Instead they sample data from visitors to some 40,000 web sites operated by their clients. And note that NetMarketShare’s numbers don’t equate to sales.

eMarketer looks at Apple’s iPhone/iPad market share...

We’ll be covering Apple's earnings this afternoon. Meanwhile, here’s some relevant data from eMarketer on Apple’s U.S. and UK market share for the iPhone and iPad as well as revenue and sales.

UK iPhone and iPad market share

In the UK, the iPhone is expected to account for a 41.4% share of smartphone users this year, an increase of just over 1% from 2017.  eMarketer estimates Android will account for 54.1% of UK smartphone users this year.

eMarketer expects there to be 18.4 million iPad users in the UK in 2018, representing 27.5% of the population. That figure also represents 50.4% of UK tablet users, - and penetration is expected to remain flat in the coming years.

This year, eMarketer estimates, 36.5 million people in the UK will use a tablet at least once per month, up from 35.6 million users last year. By 2021 this figure...

As noted by Cult of Mac, the new one is called Flex and Flow, and it brings you “chilled hip-hop.” It contains 395 Apple Loops, 25 Alchemy synth sounds, five drum kits, and two Live Loops, contained in a 174MB download.

Apple sells a record 22 million iPhones in the U.S....

According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Pulse program, Apple sold a record 22.39 million iPhones in the U.S. market during the holiday season quarter of 2017. The tech giant grew their sell-through market share from 37% to 44%, notes the research group. This is the highest ever market share for Apple in its home market.

“Apple shipped a record 22 million iPhones for the first time ever in a quarter in USA and is note-able and impressive feat because the Q4 promotional season was not nearly as aggressive as previous years,” Research Director Jeff Fieldhack stated. “ In addition, upgrade rates are slightly lower year-over-year as smartphone subscribers are holding onto phones longer.  Apple was able to grow their sell through 20% in a market that only grew 2% compared to last year. This means Apple has been successful to take share away from Samsung in the premium.”

Amazon named the world’s most valuable brand; Apple...

Amazon is the world’s most valuable brand, ahead of Apple and Google, according to the latest Brand Finance Global 500 report. The e-commerce giant’s brand value increased by 42% year on year to $150.8 billion. Apple was in first place in 2016, but was overtaken by Google in 2017.

Apple defended its second place in the ranking, with brand value rebounding to $146.3 billion after the 27% decline last year. Google has dropped from first to third position, recording a relatively slow brand value growth of 10% to $120.9 billion.

For the first time since the inception of the Brand Finance Global 500 study, technology brands claim all top five places in the league table. Samsung is fourth ($92.3 billion), and Facebook is fifth ($89.7 billion).

We need an Apple Pencil that works with the upcoming...

I really like my Apple Pencil —and really dislike the process of charging it. We need a better solution. How about an Apple Pencil that works with the upcoming AirPower?

Currrently, to charge the Pencil, you take off its cap and plug it into the Lightning connector on your iPad Pro. This creates two problems. One: that darned cap is easy to lose (ask me how I know). Two: the Apple Pencil sticks out from the iPad Pro like a sore thumb, just waiting to be snapped off (which would be bad for the input device AND the tablet).

You can also plug your Apple Pencil into a USB port with the Apple Pencil Charging Adapter and a Lightning to USB cable. This is still inelegant.

Would it be feasible to have an updated Apple Pencil that works with the AirPower when it’s released? Apple’s wireless charging pad will purportedly be able to charge a Qi-compatible iPhone, an Apple Watch, and a pair of AirPods (in a special wireless charging case) at the same time regardless of...

Is it the end of the line for the ‘i’ at Apple?...

The discovery that in iOS 11.3 Apple is renaming the iBooks app to “Books” seemed... not particularly revelatory. We’ve all read about how Apple’s been slowly stripping away the lower-case-i prefix from older products. New products and services are a generic word preceded with the word “Apple,” as in Apple TV and Apple Watch. This is the conventional wisdom. But is it true?

No, kill ‘i’

Apple’s made no pronouncements itself about it. Yes, it seems the “i” prefix introduced with the iMac 20 years ago has fallen out of favor. (I’m reminded of the time when Steve Jobs said that the “power” prefix of the PowerBook and Power Mac had gotten tired.) And yet that same prefix continues to appear in front of some of Apple’s most popular products and platforms! Meanwhile, Apple has announced new hardware—like AirPods and the HomePod—with...

How to set the default wireless network in macOS...

By default, macOS High Sierra attempts to join the wireless network it was most recently connected to. However, if you’re like me, you have a Wi-Fi network you use the most often. You can set it as the default network in macOS High Sierra.

The wireless networks your computer has connected to are listed in the Wi-Fi pane of Network preferences. You can set up your Mac to join a preferred network when you start your computer, wake it from sleep, or turn Wi-Fi on. Here’s how:

  • Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Network.
  • Click Wi-Fi in the list at the left, then click Advanced.
  • If Wi-Fi isn’t in the list, make sure your Mac has wireless capability, then click the Add button (a plus sign) at the bottom of the list. Click the Interface pop-up menu, choose Wi-Fi, give the service a name, then click Create.
  • Click Wi-Fi.

If the network you expect to see isn’t in the preferred networks list, click the Add button at...

18-core iMac Pro customers begin to receive shipping...

Three of the four iMac Pro sub-groups have shipped, with purchasers of the 18-core model now getting notifications that the machines are on their way.

Anonymous sources close to the story have stated that “a small number of early orders have shipped to U.S. customers.” No information was available about international orders, although it’s assumed that they’re expected to ship in the near future.

Sources have also confirmed that the 14-core model has not shipped as of yet, and there are no guesses as to when this will happen.

The news follows a number of MacRumors readers noting that they had received shipping notifications for their iMac Pro units. This had also happened in early January, albeit the emails from Apple at the time were sent in error.

The iMac Pro has a base configuration with an eight-core processor running at 3.2 gigahertz, 32 gigabytes of ECC DDR4 2666 RAM, a Vega 56 GPU with 8GB of VRAM, and 1 terabyte of flash storage. Configurations...

Home app to help manage HomePod software updates

It looks like you’ll use Apple’s Home app to update your HomePod once it arrives.

Developer Guilherme Rambo dug into Apple’s iOS code and found the HomePod software update mechanism. Along with alerting you to new software updates, the Home app will also let you enable automatic software updates, much like Apple TV.

While this is a little bit unexpected, it also fits into Apple’s history of sometimes building in Frankenstein-esque functionality into its apps, much like the way iTunes grew to become a central hub for media and devices.

Using the Home app to manage HomePod may be a hint that Apple plans to make the device more useful as a stationary Siri interface. Or, it may just be the app Apple decided was the best fit for managing the speaker updates.

HomePod functions as a smart speaker with Siri voice control support. It boasts seven tweeters, a woofer, and six far-field microphones packed into its canister body. Along with music streaming, the...

External Link: The Legend of Snow Leopard

In the view of many long-time Mac users, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard was the pinnacle of Apple’s desktop software, with every update since a step backward in one way or another. 9to5Mac’s Michael Steeber looks into this phenomenon and its origins. Along with the timing and pricing issues Steeber mentions, an argument could be made that Snow Leopard was the last version of OS X before Apple started to add iOS elements in 10.7 Lion. Plus, Snow Leopard was the last version of OS X to support Rosetta, and thus the last version that could run PowerPC applications. Despite all this, it’s worth remembering that Snow Leopard hasn’t seen a security update in years.

Following the news that Apple had refocused their plans for iOS 12 around stability and performance over new features, many were quick to liken the move to a “Snow Leopard release” of iOS. In recent years, the phrase has reached mythological status in the Apple community, a catch-all referring to stable software and “the good ol’ days” of the Mac.

But how did this perception develop? Was Mac OS X Snow Leopard really the gold standard of software releases, an undefeated champion in the halls of computing history? Believe it or not, the meme is almost as old as the software itself.

Two former Apple TV designers, Ben Keighran and Sam Roberts, have raised $46 million in  in two rounds of funding led by Silicon Valley VC firms Andreessen Horowitz and Greylock Partners to launch Caffeine, a startup looking to take on Amazon-owned Twitch with a new social-broadcasting service, reports Variety.

Before starting Caffeine, Keighran worked at product design lead for Apple TV. He joined Apple in 2012, when the tech giant acquired Chomp, a search startup he co-founded and led as CEO. Roberts previously worked at Apple as a senior user experience designer and was a senior designer for Apple TV, iPhoto, Aperture, and other products.

Caffeine is a social broadcasting platform and community for gaming, entertainment, and the creative arts. It allows you to engage in real-time with broadcasters or viewers. You can even...

Apple Still Aims To Allow iPad Apps To Run on Macs...

Apple's push for performance and security improvements over new features will also apply to this year's Mac software, Axios reported on Wednesday, but one key feature remains on the roadmap for 2018: The ability for Macs to run iPad apps. From the report: On the Mac side, this is taking the form of a new project around security as well as improvements in performance when waking and unlocking the system. While users would certainly welcome changes that make their systems run better and more securely, customers tend to be more motivated to make purchases based on new features rather than promised improvements around security or performance, which can be tough to judge. The signature new feature for the Mac -- the ability to run iPad apps -- is a significant undertaking that adds a high degree of complexity to this year's OS release.

Phil Schiller on HomePod

Sound & Vision is an audio, video consumer products magazine. They had the chance to sit down with Phil Schiller to talk HomePod.

A few tidbits:

We think we can create a new kind of music experience in the home that sounds incredible, and is fun to interact with. That’s what’s driving us with HomePod. And it can also be the hub for your smart home. Voice technologies like Siri are also gaining in popularity with Siri responding to over 2 billion requests each week. This helps us understand how people actually interact with their devices, what they ask, and helps us create a product for the home that makes sense.

The HomePod as hub. That’s as advertised.

Siri, over 2 billion requests each week. That’s a lot of data, and a lot of network traffic. Apple has made a point to design their machine learning architecture to work on device, with zero network connectivity required. It will be interesting to see if Siri evolves in that same direction.

It’...

Here’s how HomePod will handle future software...

Guilherme Rambo, 9to5Mac:

HomePod runs a special version of iOS, which means it gets new updates alongside iOS. The latest software publicly available for it is iOS 11.2.5, which will likely be the version installed on HomePods delivered on February 9th.

Software updates for HomePod will be managed through the Home app. The app will alert users when a new software update is available and will show an interface similar to the one used for iOS updates. Users will have the option to enable automatic updates, although it’s unclear how those will be managed. Updates can be installed on a single HomePod, all HomePods in the home or to specific stereo pairs (stereo pairing will not be available on HomePods running different software versions).

Interesting to me that there are a number of different update models at work here, all of them involving a satellite piece of Apple gear. Apple TV tends to update directly on device, Apple Watch has its own directly paired iOS...

This 1983 demo says so much about Apple’s past,...

[VIDEO] Harry McCracken, FastCompany:

On the evening of January 26, 1983, as a technology-smitten Boston University freshman, I attended the monthly meeting of the Boston Computer Society, which included a demo of Apple’s brand-new Lisa system. Though I know that I came away enormously impressed, I don’t exactly recall the event like it was yesterday. Actually, just one element was permanently etched onto my brain cells: the moment when the Lisa’s bitmapped, proportional, user-selectable typefaces flashed on screen. It was a mind-bender given that other PCs–like my beloved Atari 400–were capable only of displaying a single fixed-width font of no elegance whatsoever.

And:

What I didn’t realize until I watched the video is that seeing the meeting all over again wasn’t just an act of personal nostalgia. Between them, the IIe and Lisa, and the way Apple explained them to us BCS members, are full of lessons that remain resonant in the era of the iPhone.

The iPad lost years for Apple’s media partners

Shira Ovide, Bloomberg:

Apple Inc. is revamping its digital bookstore in another attempt to take on Amazon’s dominance. I can’t help thinking: What if?

This is a reference to this article, about Apple remaking the iBooks Store and the iBooks app, simplifying both and making book reading a better experience.

More from Shira:

The missed opportunity was for Apple’s business partners, particularly newspaper and magazine companies, which Apple persuaded to turn themselves inside out to take advantage of the iPad. It turned out that Apple was leading those partners to a dead end.

This is a bit of a curmudgeonly statement, but there is truth at its core. A number of publishers went all in on the iPad, with visions of a simple path from print to digital, with subscriptions intact.

The eighth...

The iPhone X takes the top premium smartphone spot...

Apple has retained the lead in India's premium smartphone market thanks to the iPhone X, according to new data from Counterpoint Research

According to the research group’s latest analysis on the Indian handset market, the premium smartphone segment was the second fastest growing segment (up 20% year-over-year) in calendar year 2017. Counterpoint Research found that:

  • Although the segment is more crowded than a year ago, the top three brands, Apple, OnePlus and Samsung, still contribute to 94% of the overall premium market segment.
  • Apple is still the leader in the premium segment, capturing 47% share during Q4 2017 and 38% during 2017, driven by strong shipments of iPhone X and iPhone 7.
  • However, demand for iPhone 8 remains soft and, as a result, the overall Apple shipments in the premium segment declined 31% year-over-year. The decline is also partly due to last year’s strong...

Apple to use iOS 12 to focus on stability and...

You shouldn’t go looking to iOS 12 for huge, splashy new features.

Instead, Apple will apparently be giving iOS 12 the Snow Leopard/Mac OS X 10.6 treatment and working on targeting stability, performance, and reliability as opposed to adding in loads of new features. The strategy helped fix what was becoming a growing list of issues and complaints about the Mac operating system. Now it seems that’s what’s happening with the next version of iOS for the iPhone and iPad.

Axios has reported that Apple has decided to primarily work on fixes and improvements instead of new features. Features like a redesigned Home screen, Mail and Photos improvements, and in-car interface changes have been pushed out to 2019.

It’s noted that users will see improvements in iOS’ augmented reality, parental controls and health controls this year.

This change seems to come on the heels of Apple perhaps focusing on features while allowing iOS’s overall quality to slide in its...

Apple: We Would Never Degrade the iPhone Experience...

Apple today responded to reports that the Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission are probing its decision to throttle older iPhones, confirming that the U.S government has asked questions. From a report: Apple said it would never intentionally "degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades." Apple acknowledged in December that it was secretly slowing the speeds of iPhones in an effort to help preserve aging batteries. In response to consumer backlash, the company dropped the price of battery replacements for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus from $79 to $29.

Wistron, Apple’s primary assembler in India, is close to finalizing a land deal in India’s tech hub of Bengaluru with the company likely to invest about $157 million to develop the site, reports Reuters, quoting two unnamed government officials.

ICT Service Management Solutions, Wistron’s unit that assembles Apple’s low-cost iPhone SE in India, has purportedly been scouting for some 100 acres in and around Bengaluru, capital of the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Wistron is likely to use at least a part of this land to set up new assembly lines for Apple, notes Reuters.

Apple has set its sights on the growing Indian market by pushing for shipments of the smartphone model with the goal of doubling the iPhone's market share in the country over the next five years. Focus Taiwan reported...

Apple sells a record 22 million iPhones in USA...

Counterpoint Research:

According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Pulse program, the US market sold-through 51.2m smartphones during the holiday season quarter of 2017. Apple sell-through during this period was a record 22.39 million smartphones. Apple was able to grow their sell-through market share from 37% to 44%. This is the highest ever market share for Apple in its home market.

Commenting on Apple’s growth story here, Research Director Jeff Fieldhack stated, “Apple shipped a record 22 million iPhones for the first time ever in a quarter in USA and is note-able and impressive feat because the Q4 promotional season was not nearly as aggressive as previous years. In addition, upgrade rates are slightly lower year-over-year as smartphone subscribers are holding onto phones longer. Apple was able to grow their sell through 20% in a market that only grew 2% compared to last year. This means Apple has been successful to take share away from Samsung...
