Final Cut Pro X users will be happy to hear Apple is planning an update that will arrive before the end of the year that will include support for macOS High Sierra and iOS 11 features.

Apple releases watchOS 4.0.1 with fix for Series 3...

Enlarge / Call options in the Phone app. (credit: Valentina Palladino)

Apple released a software update for its Series 3 watches today that will upgrade watchOS 4 to watchOS 4.0.1. This is the first software update to watchOS 4 since it became available for all Apple Watch models on September 19. The watchOS 4.0.1 update focuses on fixing a peculiar Wi-Fi issue some Series 3 with LTE models experienced. That issue prevented the devices from connecting to LTE in favor of connecting to an inaccessible but familiar Wi-Fi network.

Apple fixes Apple Watch Series 3 cellular bug with...

If you’ve been putting off buying the Apple Watch Series 3 because of reported cellular connectivity issues, you might want to put your order in now. Apple on Wednesday released watchOS 4.0.1, an update that fixes the problem that was widely reported by members of the media who had early access to the Watch for review.

The problem was due to the Watch switching to a Wi-Fi connection. Wi-Fi hotspots that display a confirmation webpage (such as those at Starbucks) would cause connection problems for the Watch. The watchOS 4.0.1 update fixes this bug.

In order to install the update, your Apple Watch need to have at least a 50 percent charge, and it must be connected to the charger. With the Watch within range of your iPhone, launch the Watch iPhone app and tap General > Software Update.

BuildZoom article outlines costs, details of Apple...

Apple Park, the new headquarters of Apple in Cupertino, California, is an pricey project. The final price tag for the new campus has been estimated at near $5 billion, and now BuildZoom has captured information from building permits that shows the costs of each of the major buildings on the site.

Image via BuildZoom.

As you'd expect, the circular "spaceship" main building is the most expensive part of the facility, weighing in at $427,570,867. The Steve Jobs Theater has been described by most attendees at the September 12 product reveal as a "perfect" building, and the cost of the structure shows why. The 1,000-seat theater, lobby and hands-on area cost $179,437,885 -- the second most costly part of Apple Park.

Google Home Mini and Google Home Max

I haven’t seen or used either of these products, so I’ll reserve judgement. I have seen and listened to Apple’s HomePod and I know how good it sounds for music. There’s still a lot of questions to be answered with the HomePod, but I think I’ll wait until it’s released.

External Link: Yahoo: All 3 Billion Accounts...

Remember how Yahoo was hacked back in 2013? And how, in December 2016, the company said that 1 billion accounts had been compromised? Well, that turns out to have been an understatement. Yahoo is now admitting that every single one of the company’s 3 billion accounts was hacked. Word on the street is that the best response isn’t to delete your account, since it will eventually be recycled and could potentially be used against you. Instead, it’s better to change your password to something unique and enable two-factor authentication (which Yahoo calls Account Key). And if you ever used your Yahoo password on other Web sites, be sure to give them new, unique passwords too!

Camera+ 10 is released, adds depth editing, "...

Of all of the camera apps on the App Store, probably none has been around longer or been used as much as Camera+ ($2.99). The app, which boasts over 10 million users, has been developed by LateNiteSoft for a while, and the company has now taken over marketing of Camera+ from Taptaptap. Camera+ 10 is a major update that was released today, adding a pile of features to what was already a powerful app.

To begin with, Camera+ now takes advantage of the depth information that's available from dual-lens iPhones like the iPhone 7 and 8. The developer has added support for that depth information to most of the editing tools in "The Lab". A photo taken in Depth Mode -- what LateNiteSoft calls Apple's "Portrait Mode" -- can be edited based on depth. For example, a foreground item can be saturated with color, with the background being desaturated. The result? More emphasis on the foreground item....

AWT TV Episode 23: October 3, 2017

Welcome to AWT TV, a weekly show featuring Steve Sande, Dennis Sellers and Marty Edwards of Apple World Today. Each week we'll discuss what's happened in the world of Apple, talk about new apps and accessories, maybe even have a demonstration or two of the latest software.

Starting off tonight's episode, Steve apologizes for spacing out last week's episode... that's the problem with getting old. :-)

But the big discussions have to do with several new Apple products. Marty starts off with the Apple TV 4K, which he bought...and returned. The device works well with Apple content, but as he noted, it had a tendency to take other content at lower resolutions and do a poor job of upscaling it to 4K, making the images almost unwatchable.

Steve discussed the Apple Watch Series 3, which (if you've read his online review) is a solid improvement over the original Apple Watch. We discuss the cellular capabilities of the watch, the speed of it, and the incredible...

The amazing story of an emerging GIF empire

Nicole Laporte, Fast Company, on GIFs and the Emmys:

Then came the night’s biggest, and most controversial, moment: Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer rolled a faux presidential podium onto the stage to deliver a send-up of his infamous “largest audience” speech he gave the day after President Trump’s inauguration. Immediately, the Giphy crew began to splice the scene into GIF form. Part of Giphy’s genius lies in not posting the obvious clip, so Spicer himself wasn’t of much interest. Rather, they surveyed the sea of shocked and bewildered faces in the audience, looking for gold. They found it in Veep‘s Anna Chlumsky, her entire body contorted into an OMG expression—eyes bulging, neck veins popping—as she craned out of her seat for a better view of the strange performance. Within minutes, the editors had the three-second clip uploaded onto Giphy. It began to trend almost immediately. A week after the show, it’d been viewed more than 13 million times.

This is big for Apple Pay, Apple Watch, and Apple Wallet. I’d expect this to roll out to more, if not all teams next season. Just a matter of time before this moves to other sports, as well.

Smart profile of Apple’s commitment to silicon

Horace Dediu, Asymco:

The Apple A11 Bionic processor has 4.3 billion transistors, six cores and an Apple custom GPU using a 10nm FinFET technology. Its performance appears to be almost double that of competitors and in some benchmarks exceeds the performance of current laptop PCs.

And:

Apple has come to the point where is dominates the processor space. But they have not stopped at processors. The effort now spans all manners of silicon including controllers for displays, storage, sensors and batteries. The S series in the Apple Watch the haptic T series in the MacBook, the wireless W series in AirPods are ongoing efforts. The GPU was conquered in the past year. Litigation with Qualcomm suggests the communications stack is next.

A name you’ll be hearing more and more of is the person who runs this silicon engineering effort for Apple, Johny Srouji. This is a great read.

Yahoo’s parent company has revealed that the massive data breach that occurred in August of 2013 affective all three billion Yahoo accounts that existed at the time.

Previously, Yahoo said the hack affected 1 billion accounts, or a third of all accounts. Verizon now says new intelligence suggests the attack was much larger, compromising all Yahoo accounts in 2013.

Following Verizon’s acquisition of Yahoo, Verizon received new intelligence and now believes, following an investigation, with the assistance of outside forensic experts, that all Yahoo user accounts were affected by the August 2013 theft.

Information stolen from the accounts included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, birth dates, hashed passwords, and both encrypted and unencrypted security questions and answers. Clear text passwords, bank account information, and credit/debit card information...

Apple patent filing is for 3D user interface effects...

Future iOS and macOS devices could sport a 3D interface — or at least an interface with three-dimensional elements. The company has filed for a patent (number 9,778,815) for “three dimensional users interface effects on a display.”

Here’s Apple’s summary of the patent: “The techniques disclosed herein may use various sensors to infer a frame of reference for a hand-held device. In fact, with various inertial clues from accelerometer, gyrometer, and other instruments that report their states in real time, it is possible to track a Frenet frame of the device in real time to provide an instantaneous (or continuous) 3D frame-of-reference. In addition to--or in place of--calculating this instantaneous (or continuous) frame of reference, the position of a user's head may either be inferred or calculated directly by using one or more of a device's optical sensors, e.g., an optical camera, infrared camera, laser, etc. With knowledge of the 3D frame-of-reference for the display and/...

AKVIS Points for the Mac lets you turn images into...

AKVIS 's AKVIS Points for macOS lets you easily convert images into pointillism paintings. This painting technique is characterized by applying of separate brush strokes in the form of dots or spots.

A complex hue is decomposed into individual colors, which are displayed on the canvas as dotted strokes, small dabs of paint of pure color. The optical mixing of these dots provides a visual perception of an entire painting.

With the AKVIS Points software you can make paintings in the style of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. The software includes ready-to-use presets for the pointillism effect which help you start working. It's possible to create your own presets by saving your favorite photo-to-painting settings.

The program offers the choice between a flat paper and a rough surface that makes the impression even more vivid. It's also possible to add a signature, an inscription, or a copyright...

Notable apps and app updates for Oct. 3, 2017

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they're popular and deserve mention. Here are today's picks.

iOS Apps/Updates

Sensible Objects has unleashed Beasts of Balance. It’s an augmented reality stacking game in which players take on the role of Divine Creators, playing solo or with friends, to build worlds and reach high scores by stacking magical “Artefacts” into towers. Everything added to the tower interacts with a world that evolves on a wirelessly connected digital device. To succeed, players have to keep their tower and the ecosystem of their world in balance, stacking all 24 pieces and caring for the virtual beasts they create.

European Commission is taking Ireland to court as...

In August last year, the European Commission ruled that Ireland must recover 13 billion euros ($15bn) in unpaid taxes from Apple, ruling the ‘special deal’ illegal. Both Apple and Ireland are appealing the rulings although Ireland did say it would collect the money begrudgingly in the meantime.

Apparently. that didn’t happen. Today, the Commission said that Ireland has still not received the money from Apple and is now taking legal action to pursue.

Apple changes the definition of ‘on’ and ‘off’ in...

During the iOS 11 beta I noticed a strange bug: I’d turn off Wi–Fi in Control Center and it would turn itself back on. After doing this multiple times, I filed a bug. Turns out that it wasn’t a bug, it was working as intended.

This is problem for me because I turn Wi–Fi off when I leave the office so that my iPhone won’t try to connect to the building’s Wi–Fi (or that of a passing Google bus). When your iPhone can’t connect reliably to Wi-Fi, it leaves the device in a state of limbo and data packets stop flowing.

When I leave the office I flip up Control Center and turn off Wi–Fi. When my iPhone would inevitably stop receiving data, I’d check Wi–Fi and notice that it had been turned back on. It’s Wi–Fi disobedience, essentially.

Rather than giving us a feature that many have requested (3D Touch the Wi–Fi icon and select from available networks) Apple nerfed the feature and made it worse.

Who asked...

Google Is Latest Company To Ditch Headphone Jack In...

When launching its original Pixel smartphone, Google mocked the iPhone 7's missing headphone jack in its marketing material. According to Cult of Mac, Google won't be doing the same for the Pixel 2. "The company has decided to remove the aging port from its latest handsets," reports Cult of Mac. "A new leak reveals that the lineup will rely solely on USB-C for wired connectivity." From the report: Incredibly reliable leaker Evan Blass has published pictures and details of Google's upcoming Pixel 2 smartphones on VentureBeat. He has also confirmed that neither device will feature a headphone jack, which means users will have to rely on a USB-C adapter or Bluetooth. It also means Google will no longer be able to put out Pixel ads that take sly swipes at the iPhone's missing port. Blass says both Pixel handsets will be powered by a Snapdragon 835 chipset -- the same one found in the Galaxy S8, the LG V30, and other 2017 flagships -- not a faster Snapdragon 836 processor as originally...

External Link: Philips Adds HomeKit Support to Hue...

In iOS 11, Apple allows device manufacturers to retroactively add HomeKit support to existing home automation devices that rely natively on other standards. Philips is taking advantage of that change and has added HomeKit support to the Hue Smart Tap Switch, Hue Smart Dimmer Switch, and Hue Smart Motion Sensor. HomeKit support does require a second-generation Hue Smart Bridge, but all three of those devices need the Hue Smart Bridge to operate anyway. In theory, you should be able to use these Hue switches and sensors to trigger any other HomeKit device.

Former Intel CEO Paul Otellini Dies At 66

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Engadget: Paul Otellini, Intel's previous CEO, died in his sleep on Monday, the company announced this morning. He was 66. Otellini served as Intel's fifth chief executive from 2005 through 2013, and leaves behind a legacy of the company's dominance in x86 processors. Notably, he also worked with Apple as it moved away from PowerPC chips and adopted Intel's wares. After retiring in 2013, Otellini revealed one major regret during his tenure: not working hard enough to get Intel's chips in the iPhone. Consequently, Intel mostly missed on the smartphone revolution.

Otellini joined Intel in 1974 and served various roles throughout his career, including chief operating officer from 2003 to 2005. He would go on to spend almost 40 years at the company. He was an intriguing choice as CEO, since he was the company's first non-engineer to hold that role.
