Apple Music Was Always Going To Win

Apple Music is about to overtake Spotify as the most popular streaming music service in the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend. Gizmodo: [...] Here's where the inevitability comes into play. Because all Apple devices come preloaded with Apple Music, countless consumers start using Apple Music without knowing any better. It's effectively become the streaming music analogue of Microsoft pushing people to surf the web with Internet Explorer. The big difference is that people eventually have to pay for Apple Music, which is the same price as Spotify. As many suspected when it launched three years ago, Apple Music was bound to succeed simply because Apple is big enough and rich enough to will it so. Think about it this way: Spotify gained traction quickly after its 2011 launch, largely because music enthusiasts had seen its streaming model succeed globally and wanted to try this neat new thing. After all, there wasn't anything quite like it at the time, and...

The encrypted messaging app Telegram was mysteriously removed from Apple's App Store last week for a number of hours. At the time, little was known about the reason why, except that it had to do with "inappropriate content." According to a 9to5Mac report, Apple removed Telegram after the app was found serving up child pornography to users.

A verified email from Phil Schiller details that Apple was alerted to child pornography in the Telegram app, immediately verified the existence of the content, and removed the app from its online stores. Apple then notified Telegram and the authorities,...

IDC: there’s potential for iPad Pro growth in the...

Good news for the iPad Pro: the worldwide detachable tablet market (those with attachable/detachable keyboards) grew to 6.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2017 (4Q17), an increase of 10.3% from the previous holiday season, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker. Apple maintained a solid lead in the holiday quarter driving growth both through its lower-priced 9.7-inch iPad as well as its newly refreshed iPad Pro products, notes the research group.

While the lower-price iPad has continued to drive a strong consumer upgrade cycle, the shifting focus is to iPad Pro and its potential in the commercial and education segments. With the only expected tablet growth to come from these segments, Apple's recent launch of "Apple at Work" shows their commitment to maintain its leader position, according to IDC.

Rumor: new versions of Apple devices will debut in...

DigiTimes says some Apple suppliers are poised to benefit from new or increased orders from the tech giant to help produce next-generation iPad, MacBook, and Apple Watch models this year. The article than says that new versions of the devices will debut starting in March.

Let the Sellers Research Group (that’s me) clarify. Based on my crystal ball, we’ll indeed see new 12-inch MacBooks in March. There’s also a chance we’ll see updated iPads at that point in time. At least a rev of the 9.7-inch “non-pro” version. Updated iPad Pros might now launch until May or even June.

However, don’t expect new MacBook Pros and new iMacs to be announced until this summer’s Worldwide Developer Conference. The next generation of iPhones will arrive, as usual, in the fall (probably September), along with the Apple Watch Series 4.

∞ iOS 11, HomePod, and trust

Last night, we had a nice little gathering to watch the Super Bowl. As everyone got settled in to watch the game, they pulled out their phones, as one does.

Suddenly, an alert appeared on my phone, one I’ve never seen before, asking me if it was OK to share my WiFi password with one of our guests. I tapped OK and they were logged on to our WiFi.

I’d heard about this behavior (I believe it shipped with the very first version of iOS 11), but never encountered it before. It felt a bit like opening an AirPods case near my iPhone. The alert just popped up, took over the screen.

Benjamin Mayo did a writeup of this behavior back in June 2017. If you follow the link, you can see what the alert looks like.

So what does this have to do with HomePod? Fair question.

Imagine that you lived next door to a big guy, a big guy with a beard who loved Heineken and...

Apple Music may overtake Spotify this summer

Competition seems to be heating up among the two of the biggest music streaming services: Apple Music and Spotify. Citing unnamed"people in the record business," the Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has been adding 5% to its U.S. subscriber base every month versus "just" 2% for Spotify.

Assuming that pace continues, Apple would overtake Spotify in the world's biggest music market this summer. Spotify is a music, podcast, and video streaming service that was officially launched on Oct. 7, 2008. Apple’s streaming music service was launched in June 2015.

Apple, Cisco, Aon, Allianz team up for cyber risk...

Apple, Cisco, Aon and Allianz have  announced a new cyber risk management solution for businesses, comprised of cyber resilience evaluation services from Aon, secure technology from Cisco and Apple, and options for enhanced cyber insurance coverage from Allianz.

The new solution is designed to help a wider range of organizations better manage and protect themselves from cyber risk associated with ransomware and other malware-related threats, which are the most common threats faced by organizations today.

Cyber security risk is growing. Losses from cyber threats are outpacing investment in IT security, according to Chuck Robbins, Chairman and CEO, Cisco. This fact, combined with low adoption of cyber insurance, an active adversary, a fragmented security technology market and a security skills shortage, means it’s difficult for many organizations to understand and manage this risk effectively, he adds. The new solution covers the primary dimensions of cyber protection...

David Pogue’s glowing HomePod review

David Pogue, Yahoo:

In a devastatingly effective demo, Apple lines up four of these things: The Google Home Max ($400), Sonos One ($200), Amazon Echo ($100), and the HomePod. They’re volume-matched and rigged to an A/B/C/D switch, so a single song can hop from one to the other. (Apple even installed a halo backlight behind each speaker that illuminated to show you which one was playing.)

The HomePod sounded the best. Its bass, in particular, was amazing: full and deep, but also distinct and never muddy — you could hear the actual pitch of the bass notes, not just the thud. That, unsurprisingly, is where other small speakers have trouble.

And:

The real shock was the Google Home Max, a massive, 12-pound machine that’s supposed to be all about the sound; it sounded like cardboard compared with the HomePod and Sonos.

Heh. Like cardboard. Nice.

I’ve yet to read a review that didn’t place HomePod on top of the heap. David Pogue’s comments about...

Apple looking into limited reports of incoming call...

Joe Rossignol, MacRumors:

The Financial Times today highlighted a limited number of reports from users experiencing delays with incoming phone calls on the iPhone X. Apple later confirmed to MacRumors that it is “looking into these reports.”

And:

The report, which links to a few discussions on the Apple Support Communities, notes that hundreds of customers have complained that the iPhone X’s display experiences delays in turning on for up to 10 seconds during incoming phone calls, preventing these users from tapping the Accept or Decline buttons.

Sounds like a very small pool of people have this issue, but it also sounds like this has been around a while (here’s a Reddit comment on this from two months ago) and is still not solved.

Apple patent involves Apple Watch bands with ‘...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 20180027931) for “dynamic fit adjustment for wearable electronic devices.” It refers to current, and future, versions of its Apple Watch bands.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that, in many cases, watch bands may have limited fit adjustment increments available. For example, some bands have an incrementally user-adjustable size (e.g., a buckling clasp, pin and eyelet, etc.) whereas other bands have a substantially fixed size, adjustable only with specialized tools and/or expertise (e.g., folding clasp, deployment clasp, snap-fit clasp, etc.). Still other bands may be elasticated expansion-type bands that stretch to fit around a user's wrist.

In other cases, Apple says conventional watch bands may catch, pinch, or pull a user's hair or skin during use if the band is overly tight. Watch bands may also slide along a user's wrist, turn about a user's wrist, or may be otherwise uncomfortable or bothersome to a user if the band is...

Notable apps and app updates for Feb. 5, 2018

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they're popular and deserve mention. Here are today's picks.

macOS Apps/Updates

RE:Vision Effects has released RE:Match 2 for Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro. The upgrade addresses common color problems when using multiple shots and/or multiple cameras.

For general multicam shoots RE:Match matches, as best it can, one sequence's color appearance to match that of another. For stereo pairs, the software can further refine the overall color match by taking into account that the two views are captured at the same time with a relatively small distance between the views.

In addition, RE:Match is also able to propagate color changes into areas that are present in only one view. It can also make other details, such...

Apple launches repair program for iPhone 7 units...

This might help you out.

Apple on Friday launched a repair program for iPhone 7 devices that are impacted by an ongoing bug that causes them to have no available service even when cellular coverage is available. Apple says the problem is caused by a component that has failed on the main logic board.

The company has stated that the issue affects “a small percentage” of iPhone 7 devices and causes them to display a “No Service” message instead of properly connecting to an available cellular network.

iPhone 7 owners experiencing this issue can receive a free device repair from Apple. If you’ve already paid for repairs, you’re eligible for reimbursement. Apple will be emailing customers who may have previously paid for a repair related to this problem to offer a refund.

Apple has stated that affected units were manufactured between September 2016 and February 2018 and were sold in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, and the United States. Model numbers that...

Since December, the issue has been a hot topic on Apple’s support forums. At this point, it’s unclear if the issue is software or hardware related. One user stated that restoring iOS fixed the issue for a few days, but it later surfaced again. Another user stated that Apple replaced their iPhone X, but the problem also emerged on the replacement unit.

The user offered the following comment:

Man I am facing exactly the same problem. I thought there was a problem with the device so I went to Apple service support in my country and gave to me a brand new replacement which has the same problem. It is definitely a software issue. Apple should do something about it as it...
