Apple releases iOS 11.0.2 update that fixes static...

iOS 11 is barely two weeks old, and it’s already received its second update. Apple on Tuesday released iOS 11.0.2, one that you’ll want to install if you’re a frequent user of FaceTime or often make phone calls.

iOS 11.0.2, according to the release notes, “Fixes an issue where crackling sounds may occur during calls for a small number of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus devices.” The update also fixes a problem that causes photos to be hidden, and fixes an issue with S/MIME encrypted emails, where attachments would not open.

Before installing the update, back up your iPhone. The update won’t install unless you have a Wi-Fi connection. When that’s done, you can install the update by tapping the Settings app and then General > Software Update. Then tap the Download and Install link at the bottom of the release notes. (For some reason, Download and Install was dimmed for me, which meant I wasn’t able to activate the installation even though I was connected to Wi-Fi. I had to...

YouTube app update brings iMessage sharing and...

The YouTube app (free) for iOS was updated this morning with a new iMessage app that lets users share video and watch those videos inline without having to exit the Messages app.

When in the Messages app, users can tap the YouTube iMessage app to view a list of recently watched videos or tap the "Search YouTube" field to look for a specific video topic. Tapping on the video thumbnail places it right into the Message stream where it's possible to add a comment or just hit the Send button.

The Message recipient just needs to tap the app to start watching the video right in Messages. There's also an "Open App" link if the user would like to view the video in the YouTube app (see image below).

Twelve South CaddySack: Dealing with dongles without...

Accessory designer Twelve South always steps up to the plate when there’s an Apple-related problem to be solved. In the case of the new CaddySack ($49.99), the problem solved is what to do with all of those cables and adapters that are a necessity with the USB-C MacBook and MacBook Pro.

Design

As part of the iconic BookBook family, the CaddySack looks like a leather-bound book. The leather exterior is a deep chocolate color, embossed on the spine with decorative touches and gold-leaf (probably faux…) highlights. Like the other BookBook accessories, the CaddySack is classy and well-made.

Open the zipper that closes the case with the leather zipper pull, and the interior is just as nice. A black and gray herringbone material lines the interior, while bright red elastic bands expand to keep everything tightly in place during transit. There’s...

macOS market share up, iOS down (slightly) in...

According to the latest market share survey from NetMarketShare, the market share for macOS rose while iOS dipped (slightly)  last month.

According to the report, among desktop operating systems, macOS had 6.35% of the global market share in August, up from from 5.94% percent in July (that’s global market share; in the U.S. it’s over 13%). April 2016’s 9.2% was an all-time high, according to NetMarketShare’s measurements. Windows remains dominant with 90.61%.

iOS had 32.34% in September. This compares to 65.53% for Android, 0.87% for Windows Phone, and 0.49% for Java ME. The all-time high for iOS was in July 2012 with 65.94%.

NetMarketShares’ monthly surveys don’t measure market share in terms of computer systems sold. Instead they sample data from visitors to some 40,000 web sites operated by their clients. And note that NetMarketShare’s numbers don’t equate to sales.

Apple is granted a patent for a 3D printing system

Apple has been granted a patent (number 9,776,364) for a 3D printing system that that includes a 3D printer — and 3D glasses should Apple ever enter that market.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that manufacturing based 3D printing is a promising and emerging technology for printing and creating a 3D or 2D real (i.e. physical and tangible) object of any shape. It involves making a 3D solid object of virtually any shape from a virtual model.

3D printing is achieved using an additive process, where successive layers of material are laid down in different shapes. For example, to perform a print, the 3D printer reads the design from a file and lays down successive layers of liquid, powder, paper or sheet material to build the model from a series of cross sections. These layers, which correspond to the virtual cross sections from the virtual model, are joined or automatically fused to create the final shape. The primary advantage of this technique is its ability to...

Apple has acquired yet another company that might prove fruitful for image and facial analysis in the future.

As usual, Apple offered the following comment regarding the transaction:

Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.

Per its website, Regaind has developed a computer vision API that can extract “game-changing insights” from images.

The company has offered the following description of its tools:

We help businesses and developers deal with massive flows of images by using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence to analyze and sort them. Your problem is often not reduced to finding a photo of a “sailboat” or of a “lion”: it’s also about finding the right one for your specific use, among many others. “RARE DISPLAY OF MORTALITY: As consumers reject the new MacBook Pro and Apple arrives late to the game with HomePod, an Echo wannabe, the company is clinging to the iPhone for more than half of its revenue—an inauspicious strategy, since phone sales are predicted to decline.

“MORTIFYING TRUMP MOMENT: Cook showed up at Trump Tower in December to kiss the ring, then went to the White House in June to try to...

Ireland faces EU rebuke for not yet collecting Apple...

Ireland faces a rebuke from European Union authorities for failing to collect a year-old tax bill of as much as 15 billion euros (about US$17.6 billion) from Apple, reports Bloomberg.

The European Commission, Europe’s anti-trust and consumer investigation agency,  may issue a “non-compliance action as soon as this week,” the article adds, quoting an unnamed “person with knowledge of the matter.” The EU has pushed Ireland to collect the money, which was initially due by Jan. 3.

The EU claims that Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands have attracted investment and jobs by helping big companies avoid tax in other countries, including EU members. The commission suspects Ireland was too lenient in rulings it gave to Apple and which helped the company shield tens of billions of dollars in profit from taxation. At 12.5%,...

Feature Request: Apple should color match all...

Apple has made white accessories a signature design since the white earbuds dangled from the white iPod in 2001. The company even made a whole ad campaign out of the instantly recognizable white cord.

Since then, its cables, adapters, and other accessories have generally followed that trend. With the darker space gray color available as a default on iPhones, iPads, and even MacBooks nowadays, the standard white accessories have started to look cheap and tacky and not iconic for many customers.

Apple currently offers very few accessories in black, leaving that to third-party vendors (or as premium exclusives with the upcoming iMac Pro). I believe black should be standard.

Thanks to Bombich Software for sponsoring The Loop this week. Bombich Software has released Carbon Copy Cloner 5, an upgrade to its bootable backup software for macOS. The upgrade features scheduled task grouping and sorting, guided setup and restore, task history trend charts, a health check for backups, advanced file filtering, and includes hundreds of improvements and fixes.

Carbon Copy Cloner 5 requires macOS 10.10 or later and will be compatible with APFS and Apple’s macOS 10.13 High Sierra release this autumn. A full-featured thirty day trial version is available.

Carbon Copy Cloner is an app that I’ve used for years, in fact, since it was first released. The new version goes a long way to make the software easier to use, while still adding more advanced features.

High Sierra's Disk Utility Does Not Recognize...

macOS 10.13's Disk Utility 17.0 (1626) does not recognize raw drives, reads a blog post, shared by several readers. From the post: Diskutil does recognize the drive. We'll use it to perform a quick, cursory format (e.g., diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ NewDisk GPT disk0) to make the disk appear in Disk Utility, where further modifications can more easily be made. Plugging in an unformatted external drive produces the usual alert, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. Initialize... | Ignore | Eject", but clicking Initialize just opens Disk Utility without the disk appearing. There's an option in Disk Utility to view "all devices," but clicking that doesn't show raw disks, the blog post adds.

Ask Slashdot: Why Would Anyone Want To Spend $1,000...

Last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the $1,000 sticker price for the base model of iPhone X, the latest flagship smartphone from the company which goes on sale next month, is "a value price for the technology that you're getting." An anonymous reader writes: I simply don't understand why anyone would want to spend such amount on a phone. Don't get me wrong. Having a smartphone is crucial in this day and age. I get it. But even a $200 phone, untethered from any carrier contract, will let you install the apps you need, will allow you to take good pictures, surf the web, and listen to music. That handset might not be as fast as the iPhone X or Samsung's new Galaxy Note 8, or it might not be able to take as great pictures, but the difference, I feel, doesn't warrant an additional $800. The reader shares a column: When considering a purchase, comparing the value a product will add to our lives, and its cost is wise. Subjective perceptions affect how we value possessions, but let's...

LG UltraFine gets High Sierra update to improve...

The latest version of Apple’s Mac operating system, High Sierra, was released last week and includes a ton of new features and performance enhancements. It’s full of tweaks to essential apps like Safari, but the remarkable stuff is under-the-hood: a brand-new file system, as well as the groundwork for virtual-reality experiences. Today, LG’s UltraFine monitors are getting a High Sierra update to improve performance and features on MacBooks, made possible thanks to Apple’s new release.

When updating to a new major release of macOS, it’s always a little nerve-wracking to see which of your third-party accessories and software play nice with the new update. Sometimes you’ll need to download even more software to ensure smooth compatibility for the rest of your system, including the inevitable bug fixes and firmware updates.

Analyst: iPhone X production could be limited to 30...

In a note to clients — as noted by AppleInsider — KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reduced his forecast for iPhone X units this year to 30 million to 35 million units.

It’s certainly not a lack of demand. The analyst says its due to limited production issues for the smartphone’s TrueDepth Camera, which enables Face ID.

"As issues with the production of TrueDepth Camera can potentially be overcome in a few months, we have full confidence in iPhone's growth prospects in the high-end smartphone market in 2018-19," Kuo wrote.

FaceID uses a TrueDepth camera system made up of a dot projector, infrared camera and flood illuminator, and is powered by A11 Bionic to accurately map and recognize a face. These advanced depth-sensing technologies work together to securely unlock iPhone, enable...

Apple has released ARM-ready source code for the XNU kernels found in iOS and macOS, “marking a first for iOS, and possibly showing off some of the groundwork for Macs with ARM-based processors,” reports AppleInsider. The code is available through a GitHub repository.

XNU is the computer operating system kernel developed and used by Apple in macOS. It’s been released as free and open-source software as part of the Darwin operating system. XNU is also used as the kernel for the iOS, tvOS, and watchOS operating systems.

In computing, the 'kernel' is the central component of most computer operating systems; it is a bridge between applications and the actual data processing...

Hands-on: Best fast charger options for iPhone 8 and...

The iPhone 8 and the upcoming iPhone X both support fast charging via Apple’s 29W USB-C adapter and USB-C to Lightning Cable. Apple says that by using fast charging, your iPhone can charge up to 50% in as little as 30 minutes.

Unfortunately, the official first party charging accessories — its 29W USB-C Power Adapter ($49), and its 1-meter USB-C to Lightning Cable ($25) — cost nearly $75 combined. That’s a lot of money to spend on a fast charging solution, especially for one that isn’t exceedingly faster than Apple’s own 12W adapter + a regular USB to Lightning cable.

The good news is that earlier this week Apple noted that third-party power adapters...

The “truth” about Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

Reddit post from an account named AmazonVideoEngineer:

Wanted to make this throwaway account after yesterday’s debacle. I saw many people get upset so I wanted to issue this warning: do not expect Amazon to launch before October 26th. The app is done, and has been done for months already. However there are a lot of politics going on beyond my pay grade that are pushing the launch back. And just to clarify, October 26 is the earliest I would expect it. Launch could be pushed well into November.

No way to know if this is fake or not, but it is definitely interesting. Read the whole page for back and forth questions with the alleged engineer. Fascinating. Take with a grain of salt.

UPDATE: I’ve been asked about the reference to “yesterday’s debacle”. I am still looking for a response, but I believe the reference is to last week when Amazon dropped the Apple TV from Amazon.com. As of this post, the Apple TV is still MIA on Amazon’s site.
