Apple patent involves Apple Watch bands with ‘...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 20180027931) for “dynamic fit adjustment for wearable electronic devices.” It refers to current, and future, versions of its Apple Watch bands.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that, in many cases, watch bands may have limited fit adjustment increments available. For example, some bands have an incrementally user-adjustable size (e.g., a buckling clasp, pin and eyelet, etc.) whereas other bands have a substantially fixed size, adjustable only with specialized tools and/or expertise (e.g., folding clasp, deployment clasp, snap-fit clasp, etc.). Still other bands may be elasticated expansion-type bands that stretch to fit around a user's wrist.

In other cases, Apple says conventional watch bands may catch, pinch, or pull a user's hair or skin during use if the band is overly tight. Watch bands may also slide along a user's wrist, turn about a user's wrist, or may be otherwise uncomfortable or bothersome to a user if the band is...

If you fancy yourself a pinball wizard, you can give the game a whirl on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Pro Pinball, which is based on the classic pinball series from the ‘90s.

The game — available in $2.99 and $6.99 versions at the Apple App Store — has been completely redeveloped for iOS by the original developers. Apple's event calendar: When is the next Apple...

Apple doesn’t often participate in big industry-wide events like CES or E3. The most valuable company in the world holds it own events, thank you very much. Several times a year, Apple invites the press and industry professionals out to a theater to hear all about its latest products and services. Apple calls these “Special Events,” and streams them online to its millions of fans.

There’s also WWDC, Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference, a multi-day event in the middle of the year focused on sessions for developers, helping them make the most out of the latest Apple tools and products. It kicks off with a big keynote that serves to announce new products (typically the latest versions of iOS and macOS, as well as a few hardware products).

Notable apps and app updates for Feb. 5, 2018

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they're popular and deserve mention. Here are today's picks.

macOS Apps/Updates

RE:Vision Effects has released RE:Match 2 for Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro. The upgrade addresses common color problems when using multiple shots and/or multiple cameras.

For general multicam shoots RE:Match matches, as best it can, one sequence's color appearance to match that of another. For stereo pairs, the software can further refine the overall color match by taking into account that the two views are captured at the same time with a relatively small distance between the views.

In addition, RE:Match is also able to propagate color changes into areas that are present in only one view. It can also make other details, such...

Apple launches repair program for iPhone 7 units...

This might help you out.

Apple on Friday launched a repair program for iPhone 7 devices that are impacted by an ongoing bug that causes them to have no available service even when cellular coverage is available. Apple says the problem is caused by a component that has failed on the main logic board.

The company has stated that the issue affects “a small percentage” of iPhone 7 devices and causes them to display a “No Service” message instead of properly connecting to an available cellular network.

iPhone 7 owners experiencing this issue can receive a free device repair from Apple. If you’ve already paid for repairs, you’re eligible for reimbursement. Apple will be emailing customers who may have previously paid for a repair related to this problem to offer a refund.

Apple has stated that affected units were manufactured between September 2016 and February 2018 and were sold in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, and the United States. Model numbers that...

The iPhone X may be having trouble answering phone calls.

A recent report states that a growing number of users are unable to answer phone calls with their iPhone X because the display does not wake up while the phone is ringing, thus meaning they can’t access the accept and decline buttons.

Since December, the issue has been a hot topic on Apple’s support forums. At this point, it’s unclear if the issue is software or hardware related. One user stated that restoring iOS fixed the issue for a few days, but it later surfaced again. Another user stated that Apple replaced their iPhone X, but the problem also emerged on the replacement unit.

The user offered the following comment:

Man I am facing exactly the same problem. I thought there was a problem with the device so I went to Apple service support in my country and gave to me a brand new replacement which has the same problem. It is definitely a software issue. Apple should do something about it as it...

Apple Daily Report for Feb. 2, 2018

The AWT News Update is on hiatus while my compadre, Steve, deals with a death in the family. Prayers go out to the entire Sande family. In the place of the AWT News Update, I’ll offer a text-only (no podcast) summary of breaking stories with a tip o’ my hat to my former website, Apple Daily Report.

Some folks who ordered the HomePod last week (including Yours Truly) have seen their credit cards charged for the wireless speaker purchase, so they should be shipping soon.

Apple CEO Tim Cook says Apple Pay is coming to Brazil soon, which means another country will be able to take advantage of the contactless payment system.

During Apple’s Q1 2018 earnings call on Thursday, Cook addressed Apple’s on-going iPhone battery replacement program and controversy concerning its practice of slowing down iPhones with aging batteries. The CEO said Apple didn’t consider what the battery...

Roundup: Comparing the 18-core iMac Pro to the 10-...

The iMac Pro is an interesting product. It’s not as modular as a Mac Pro could be, but is much more powerful than a standard 5K iMac. With that being said, the iMac Pro is getting outstanding reviews, and recently, Apple has begun shipping the 18-core iMac Pro, the most powerful Mac you can purchase today. Review: Cardhop, Contact management jedi for macOS

Apple’s Contacts app (formerly Address Book) hasn’t changed much over the years. It’s pretty much a loose database of friends and family, offer the required functionality to support a centralized locations for email addresses, contacts, and phone numbers. But it feels like Apple was forced to make it, against its will.

Other neat features include quick access to groups of contacts (for sending a group email) and the ability to send Facebook messages without having to switch over to a web browser.

Flexibits has gone bananas in its effort to both bring additional functionality to macOS with an emphasis on user experience (just like it did with Fantastical). This is a good thing. Pretty...

Asheville School plans a Summer App Development Camp...

Asheville (N.C.) School plans to help teenagers from across the U.S. and abroad learn how to make apps this summer. The co-ed boarding and day school is offering an overnight and day camp in July that focuses on teaching kids how to write code, think critically, and make apps using Apple's programming language – Swift.

Touted as safe, fast, and expressive, Swift appeals to developers who are aiming to build on Apple’s multiple platforms, such as iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS.  Led by two experienced app developers, Technology Director Charles Long and Communications Director Bob Williams, Asheville School's Summer App Development Camp will teach young people ages 13 to 18 all about how to code apps.

App Camp instructors Charles Long and Bob Williams help teach students how to make apps using Apple's Swift programming language. The co-ed app camp, located in Asheville, NC, offers two one-week sessions in July for teens across the U.S. and abroad.

Apple beat Samsung in unit sales with iPhone X...

Last year, Samsung's exploding Galaxy Note 7 created a catastrophically distracting meltdown for the company that enabled Apple to surpass it in total unit sales of smartphones during the winter quarter. This year, Apple has again surpassed sales of all Samsung smartphones in the quarter, except this time it's by virtue of trend-bucking new demand for the innovative, revolutionary iPhone X--without much apparent regard for its price.

HBO beats Apple in bidding war for new J.J. Abrams’...

After a bidding war with Apple, HBO has landed the first TV series that writer/director/producer J.J. Abrams has written since 2008's Fringe.

Demimonde is about a family — consisting of a mother who works as a scientist, her husband and their young daughter — who all get into a terrible car crash. After the mother winds up in a coma, her daughter begins digging through her experiments in the basement and winds up being transported to another world amid a battle against a monstrous, oppressive force, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Her father then follows her into this new world. HBO is only describing the series as "an epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama.”

So far Apple has commissioned seven scripted series....
