How Apple Is Putting Voices In Users' Heads --...

schwit1 shared WIRED's report on "a life-changing technology." Steven Levy spoke with Mathias Bahnmueller as he tested a new Apple sound processor that beams digital audio directly into hearing aids.
Bahnmueller suffers from hearing loss so severe that a year ago he underwent surgery to install a cochlear implant -- an electronic device in the inner ear that replaces the usual hearing mechanism. Around a million patients have undergone this increasingly mainstream form of treatment, and that's just a fraction of those who could benefit from it. (Of the 360 million people worldwide with hearing loss, about 10 percent would qualify for the surgery.) "For those who reach a point where hearing aids no longer help, this is the only solution," says Allison Biever, an audiologist in Englewood, CO who works with implant patients. "It's like restoring a signal in a radio station."

Cochlear implants bypass the usual hearing process by embedding a device in the inner ear and...

Apple may consider server worker tech for...

Apple is beginning to work with Google-backed technologies known collectively as service workers reports Fortune. A service worker is a script that your browser runs in the background, separate from a web page, opening the door to features that don't need a web page or user interaction. Today, they include features like push notifications and background sync.

Apps built with Service Workers, called progressive web apps (PWAs), don’t require downloads. You just point your browser at a website, and you're in the app, which you can then add to your home screen for easier access.

PWAs purportedly have advantages over native apps. They use service workers to fetch cached content, so they can function without a network connection, and to improve discoverability in search engines.

 And they...

External Link: AT&T and Verizon Getting Slower...

According to a report by OpenSignal, 4G LTE download speeds have gotten slower in the months since Verizon and AT&T have brought back unlimited data plans. Between OpenSignal’s February 2017 and August 2017 reports, AT&T’s average speed fell 6.8 percent while Verizon’s fell a whopping 11.7 percent. OpenSignal doesn’t indicate anything nefarious here, only that increased demand is slowing down those networks. Interestingly, Sprint and T-Mobile, which have offered unlimited data for years, both saw an increase in speeds: 8.6 percent for Sprint and 4.8 percent for T-Mobile.

Apple Owns $52.6 Billion In US Treasury Securities,...

randomErr shares a report from CNBC: If Apple were a foreign country, CEO Tim Cook might have considerable political clout in the United States. That's because the tech giant owns $52.6 billion in U.S. Treasury securities, which would rank it among the top 25 major foreign holders, according to estimates from the Treasury Department and Apple's SEC filings released Wednesday. Apple's stake in U.S. government securities as of June, up from $41.7 billion as of last September, puts it ahead of Israel, Mexico and the Netherlands, according to Treasury data released last month, which tracks up to May of this year. With $20.1 billion in short-term Treasury securities and $31.35 billion in long-term marketable Treasury securities, Apple still falls far below countries like China and Japan, which hold over a trillion dollars in U.S. government debt each -- which has caused considerable hand-wringing in Washington. Still, Apple is way above other big companies like Amazon, which owns less...

Apple might have one more trick up its sleeve at its annual fall event. While we’re all waiting for a brand new iPhone that will reportedly bring a brand new design, wireless charging, and AR capabilities, it seems as though Apple is also working on an LTE-enabled Apple Watch that will bring phone independence once and for all.

According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, “at least some new Apple Watch models” this year will come equipped with LTE chips “planned for release by the end of the year.” That would allow users to receive notifications and phone calls without having an iPhone nearby, as well as download music and use third-party apps.

Rumor: Apple experimenting with various types of AR...

Apple is experimenting with various types of augmented reality (AR) glasses, according to the Financial Times (which requires a subscription). Some use their own integrated display; others work with an iPhone.

I’d bet on the latter. Apple has applied for several patents regarding AR. For instance, patent number 9,482,869 is for a “head-mounted display apparatus” for retaining a portable electronic device with display.”

Similar to patent number 8,957,835, it’s for VR goggles that would connect with an iPhone. It seems to involve connecting an iPhone (or perhaps an iPod touch) to a GoPro-ish head mount for viewing media on a private display.

Apple is more interested in AR than virtual reality (VR), because the former connects people whereas the latter is often an isolating experience involving a headset that renders the user blind to the real world. The tech...

$1.7 million worth of fake Apple goods confiscated...

1.3 million pounds (approximately US$1.7 million) worth of fake Apple goods have been seized by West Sussex Trading Standards of the West Sussex County Council, reports ITV News. It’s the biggest in its history.

Companies and consumers alike are beginning to reap the rewards of the "Internet of Things". A while back, I wrote a review of the Ecobee 3 Lite smart thermostat, a HomeKit-compatible thermostat that works well with Siri. Not only has the Ecobee 3 Lite down a great job of keeping our house comfortable, but it's now going to save us even more money on our electrical bill. Ecobee has teamed up with utility company Xcel Energy for a program called AC Rewards in which the utility can remotely control the thermostat on high-demand hot summer days to reduce electrical loads.

Taiwan-based contract electronics maker Wistron Corp. is preparing to expand of its production base in India to produce the next-generation iPhone SE, reports Focus Taiwan, quoit unnamed “sources in the South Asian country.”

The tech giant has reportedly set its sights on the growing Indian market by pushing for shipments of the smartphone model with the goal of doubling the iPhone's market share in the country over the next five years. The sources told Focus Taiwan that Apple has signed up Wistron to assemble the new iPhone SEs after the Taiwanese firm started to produce the model in India in May, targeting markets around the world.

Getting a foothold in India has been a challenge for Apple. The company has opened its retail stores in a number of countries around the world, but not in India. The country has restrictive real estate investment laws for foreign companies.
