Clearhaus brings Apple Pay to 5,000 Nordic webshops

Mobile payment and digital wallet service, Apple Pay was first introduced to Sweden, Denmark and Finland in the fourth quarter of 2017. Now, in a move to make this new technology available to its 5,000+ Nordic merchants, Danish acquirer Clearhaus has added support for payments made with Apple Pay.

Soon after its Nordic release on the Oct. 24, 2017, top Nordic banks like Nordea, Jyske Bank, Edenred, N26 and ST1 were quick to adopt Apple’s mobile payment service, which allowed physical stores across the region to accept contactless payments with iOS devices, says Katrine Bak Primdahl from Jyske Bank.

∞ Cord cutting and fragmentation

From this TidBITS review of YouTube TV by Josh Centers:

Along with most of the channels you’d expect, such as ESPN, Fox News, and MSBNC, YouTube TV has just added Turner networks, including Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, CNN, TBS, and TNT. It will also soon offer NBA TV and MLB Network.

Which channels you want is highly personal, but here are a few notable channels that are missing: BET, Food Network, Hallmark, MTV, and Nickelodeon.

And from this YouTube TV support document:

FOX has not secured the rights to NFL games on its national feed, FOXNet. Users in Albuquerque, Austin, Birmingham, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Grand Rapids, Greensboro, Greenville (South Carolina), Harrisburg, Hartford, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Norfolk, Portland, Raleigh, Sacramento, Salt...

Apple employees are kissing glass at the company’s ‘...

That’s gotta hurt. Apple employees keep “smacking” into the glass at the company’s Apple Park “spaceship headquarters,” reports Bloomberg.

Surrounding the massive building are 45-foot tall curved panels of safety glass. Inside are work spaces, dubbed “pods,” also made with a lot of glass. Distracted employees using their iPhones are often walking into the panes, according to Bloomberg.

The article says some staff started to stick Post-It notes on the glass doors to mark their presence. However, the notes were purportedly removed because they detracted from the building’s flawless design.

Perhaps Apple should start giving away free Ibuprofen in the company cafeteria.

iDevices has released the Instant Switch, a $34.95remote wireless wall switch that users can pair with their iDevices products via Bluetooth technology for smart home control.

Instead of cutting holes or running wires, users can place the battery-powered Instant Switch anywhere in their home in seconds for control of their iDevices products. For example, when paired to a hard-wired iDevices Wall or Dimmer Switch, the Instant Switch immediately creates a 3- or 4-way control configuration for added functionality and user experience. The Instant Switch is also designed to control hard-to-reach places, outdoor lighting from inside, as well as provide additional access wherever it’s needed.

You can mount the Instant Switch with just a peel-and-stick to the wall using the included Command Strip from 3M. The pre-installed battery has a two-year lifespan. Since the Instant Switch mimics a...

Two Years After FBI vs Apple, Encryption Debate...

It's been two years since the FBI and Apple got into a giant fight over encryption following the San Bernardino shooting, when the government had the shooter's iPhone, but not the password needed to unlock it, so it asked Apple to create a way inside. What's most surprising is how little has changed since then. From a report: The encryption debate remains unsettled, with tech companies largely opposed and some law enforcement agencies still making the case to have a backdoor. The case for strong encryption: Those partial to the tech companies' arguments will note that cyberattacks and hacking incidents have become even more common, with encryption serving as a valuable way to protect individuals' personal information. The case for backdoors: Criminals are doing bad stuff and when devices are strongly encrypted they can do it in what amounts to the perfect dark alley, completely hidden from public view.

Brand new Shazam design

John Voorhees, MacStories:

When Apple acquired Shazam, people wondered what would become of the popular song identification and music discovery app. It’s not unusual for an app acquired by a big company to be pulled from the App Store or for development to slow substantially.

As John reports, the new version of Shazam has a great new UI, supports Spotify, same as always, and features lyrics sync, for those karaoke moments.

One thing to keep in mind though, is that if you’re using the iOS 11.3 beta, playback is broken throughout the app.

Good to know.

iPhone takes 51 percent of global smartphone revenues

That’s not units sold, but 51% of total global smartphone revenue. Both have value, but I’d argue that revenue is much more important than units sold. While total unit sales buys influence, revenue buys investment in R&D.

51% of total global smartphone revenues is astonishing.

Apple files for patent for a ‘vital signs monitoring...

Apple continues to show its interest in health/fitness technology with the filing of a patent (number 20180042556) for a “vital signs monitoring system.” Such a system would seem to work with the company’s HealthKit and ResearchKit products.

ResearchKit turns and iPhone into a tool for medical research by helping doctors, scientists and other researchers gather data more frequently and more accurately from participants anywhere in the world using iOS apps. HealthKit is a developer application programming interface (API) included in the iOS SDK (Software Development Kit) for the Mac. It is used by software developers to design applications that have extensibility and that can interact with the Health application on iOS.

In the patent filing, Apple says that, traditionally, monitoring a person's sleep or vital signs has required expensive and bulky equipment. Some systems require that the monitoring be performed away from home in a medical facility and/or require the...

3 ways tech can improve travel

Traveling is a great chance to put technology through the wringer. It’s a time when you have to be economical about the gear you carry, when your environments challenge you, and when you start seeing places where your devices could go further and do more than they already do.

Last week, my girlfriend and I spent nine days in Iceland (it was supposed to be seven, but a blizzard stranded us for an extra forty-eight hours). During that time we covered roughly half the country, from snowy lava fields in the west to black sand beaches—also with their share of snow—in the south. We carried more than a few pieces of tech with us, which gave us ample time to see what worked well and where we could use some improvement over the status quo.

QSound Labs' technology will tickle your head

By Frank Petrie

A friend of mine turned me onto a video on YouTube that insisted that you listen while wearing headphones and insisted that you keep your eyes shut throughout the presentation. I couldn't believe it; I was treated to surround sound using a pair of stereo headsets!

The sound was incredible. You could sense the space of the room you were in. You were fully immersed in the ambiance. The performers could position themselves anywhere that they wished to and you knew exactly their position relative to where you were sitting. The same went for any props that they used that produced sound.

I had to find out what this technology was. It's from QSound Labs. Accoding to the company site: ""In the early 1990’s, QSound Labs brought effective, practical three-dimensional (3D) audio technology to music and film production studios in the form of a ¼-tonne digital audio processing station...

How to listen to news on a HomePod

The HomePod offers news briefs from a variety of news sources to help keep you up to date.

To hear the latest headlines, say “Hey Siri, what’s the news today?” to hear what’s going on in the world. Siri will suggest other news sources, and you can switch to one at any time. Say something like “Hey Siri, switch to CNN instead.”

To get specific news, say, for example, “Hey Siri, give me the latest sports news.” You can also ask for business news.

(This how-to is based on my experiences and info on Apple's support pages — where the images sometimes come from.)

TechInsights estimates HomePod manufacturing costs...

The guesstimates are in and it looks like Apple shells out $216 to build each HomePod unit, meaning margins from the tech giant’s first smart speaker are much slimmer than those of its flagship iPhone line.

If the estimate is correct, this means Apple generates a profit margin around 38 percent with each $349 HomePod sold. This stands as lower than competing smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home, which boast margins of 56 percent and 66 percent, respectively.

The component breakdown found that the HomePod’s microphones, tweeters, single woofer and power management hardware add up to $58, while other miscellaneous parts like the OLED panel come out to another $60, the report said. TechInsights pegs Apple’s A8 chip at $25.50, as the housing and other unmentioned components run another $25. Manufacturing, testing and packaging tack on $17.50 to the final cost according to the firm’s estimates.

“Apple is compressing their margins a bit, wanting to go...

Cihra sees the number doubling by calendar year 2019 to $22 billion. He predicts sales will push the “other products” category to $19 billion, or 7% of Apple's total revenue. In addition, he sees it being Apple's fastest growing segment, posting 34% year-over-year improvement.

The analyst thinks Apple will ship 22 million Apple Watches this year, representing 26% year-over-year growth and earning $9.5 billion, or 3.6% of the...

Indian Character Bug Crashes iPhones and Messaging...

There’s a new way to crash your iPhone and put some messaging apps into a perpetual crash loop in iOS 11. All it takes is a single Telugu (Indian language) character sent in a message.

Indian language bug fixed in upcoming iOS 11.3,...

A bug that causes app and system crashing on iPhones, iPads, and Macs due to a specific letter in the Indian language Telugu has been fixed in Apple's upcoming iOS 11.3 and macOS 10.13.4 software updates, reports MacRumors

Apple devices can’t render the Indian character, causing apps or the entire system to crash. If the character is sent in an iMessage, for example, the recipient's Messages app will crash when the conversation is opened.

If the character is pasted into the Safari or Chrome address bar on Mac, the browsers crash. This behavior extends to virtually any system text field on iOS and macOS, resulting in many third-party apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger being affected as well, notes MacRumors

Guess what? Sonos One speakers also damage wood. https://t.co/lvPBa58hGk pic.twitter.com/3OSnTZmdDW

— Caitlin McGarry (@Caitlin_McGarry) February 15, 2018

This, clearly, is the nature of the beast.

Seems to me, “damage” implies permanence. As far as I can tell, the rings left by HomePod, etc., are like smudges. A bit of mayo (or whatever cleaning miracle you use for your wood surfaces) and elbow grease, and it’s all cleaned up.

Or put something solid under the speaker to prevent the ring in the first place.

Reviewer discovers Sonos One also marks certain wood...

Yesterday it was discovered that HomePod can leave white rings on oiled wood finishes during normal use — something that is not obvious nor ideal. Apple responded by saying that it’s not unusual for ‘vibration-dampening silicone’ to react that way and recommended customers use HomePod on different surfaces. Now a new test has backed up that claim from Apple and highlighted another smart speaker that has a similar behavior…

FastCompany:

Engineers at five major SF-based tech companies would need to spend over the 28% threshold of their income to afford a monthly mortgage near their offices.

And:

Apple engineers would have to pay an average of 33% of their monthly income for a mortgage near work. That’s the highest percentage of the companies analyzed, and home prices in Cupertino continue to skyrocket.

This housing market is a chaotic bubble. But it continues to inflate, money continues to pour in.

The Rajam Report highlights various reviews of the YouTube and Amazon Prime Video apps built for Apple TV. At the core are the complaints that the interface does not feel like a traditional Apple TV app, that they do not feel like they were written for Apple TV.

But why?

Take a look at this chart:

Those numbers are sales estimates. Pavan Rajam asks this question:

If you’re Amazon, Hulu, or YouTube, what incentive do you have to invest in a high quality tvOS app when it addresses a mere fraction of your overall TV user base?

TechInsights: Apple’s HomePod costs $216 to build

Mark Gurman, Bloomberg:

Apple Inc.’s HomePod, the company’s first foray into speakers in a decade, costs $216 to build and generates thinner profit margins than other products like the Apple Watch and iPhone, according to analysis by TechInsights.

Given the HomePod’s $349 price, that $216 cost suggests Apple is generating margins of about 38 percent, according to the product analysis firm. That compares with margins of 66 percent and 56 percent for the Google Home and Amazon Echo, products that compete in the smart-speaker market, but offer lower audio quality, according to the firm’s estimates.

Margin is complicated. Lots of analysis goes into setting prices and, thus, determining margin. But it does seem reasonable to assume this is Apple entering a somewhat crowded market, wanting to keep their pricing relatively low (compared to their cost) to help raise demand.

The bulk of the HomePod’s costs come from the internal speaker technology, including the...

Apple patent is for a transparent screen that could...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 20180047320) for a “transparent electronic device” — the device being a display to be used for, among other things, augmented reality (AR) purposes on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that electronic devices increasingly include display screens as part of the user interface of the device. As these devices have become more popular, there has been an increase in demand for the type and amount of functionality that displays in these devices supply. Apple says there’s a need for displays that provide increased functionality to a user.

What sort of functionality? A screen could have a viewing area with a transparent portion enabling a user to view objects behind the electronic device by looking at the display — in other words, an AR overlay.

According to the invention, the display may include one or more display screens as well as a flexible circuit for connecting the display screens with internal...

The $350 HomePod costs $216 to build

According to new research from TechInsights, Apple spends $216 to build a $350 HomePod, so margins from the tech giant's wireless speaker are slimmer than, for instance, those for its iPhone line.

Apple is generating margins of about 38%, according to the product analysis firm. That compares with margins of 66% and 56% for the Google Home and Amazon Echo.

“Apple is compressing their margins a bit, wanting to go big or go home,” said Al Cowsky, TechInsight’s costing manager. “In doing so, I suspect they reduced the selling price from a normal Apple margin in order to sell more units on volume.”

By Chris Gannon

The iOttie Easy Smart Tap 2 is a wonderful mount for your tablet — if you have an iPad 3/4, iPad mini, or iPad Air. I’ve been using the $44.95 mount for some time now and have really come to appreciate the use I get out of it in our van.

Going on long trips with little ones (and I have three!) can get pretty squirrelly. Sometimes the only thing you can really do is put something on the iPad, and let everyone chill out a little bit. However, nothing can be more frustrating that having an Apple tablet, but no way of making it stand up and stay in place.

I can’t tell you the amount of time it has taken me to get the iPad to sit up and be still while driving. My wife and I often grab anything we can find in the van to prop it up with: jackets, sippy cups, McDonald’s apple pies, etc.. Of course these don’t really work that well, and then it’s only a matter of time before someone...

How to control Apple Music playback on a HomePod

You can use the Apple Music app on your iOS device to control the sound volume, play what you want to hear, and add or remove songs from the Up Next queue on a HomePod.

  • To see what’s playing now (and next), open Apple Music, then tap the HomePod playback controls. If you don’t see the HomePod controls, on the Now Playing screen, tap the icon that looks like a pyramid with concentric circles behind it, then choose HomePod.
  • To choose what’s next, after choosing HomePod in the Apple Music app, tap Library, For You, Browse, Radio, or Search to find music to play. You can choose to play an item next or add it to the end of the Up Next queue.
  • To use the Control Center. Open it by, pressing (or touch and holding) Now Playing to expand it, then tap your HomePod.

(This how-to is based on my experiences and info on Apple's support pages — where the images sometimes come from.)

Apple confirms that HomePod may leave white rings on...

As nifty as the HomePod may be, it can possibly leave white rings on wood surfaces with an oil or wax finish.

The discovery was noted in reviews by Wirecutter and Pocket-lint as well as highlighted by VentureBeat, with at least one user sharing the problem on Twitter.

Pocket-lint’s Stuart Miles offered the following statement about the issue in his review:

“For our tests we placed the speaker on a solid oak kitchen worktop treated with Danish oil.

Within 20 minutes the HomePod had caused a white discoloured ring to appear on the wood that some days later has faded, although still hasn’t completely disappeared.

We subsequently tested the HomePod on other materials: the same wood that hadn’t been treated with Danish oil and a regular lacquered desk and haven’t seen the same issues.”

Apple has stated that it is “not unusual” for a speaker with a silicone base to leave a “mild mark” when placed on certain oiled or waxed surfaces,...

Apple CEO Tim Cook offers explanation as to why...

You’ll apparently be able to see the gift shop of the new Apple Park campus, but that’s about it.

Answering a shareholder question as to whether shareholders would ever get a tour of Apple Park in the new Steve Jobs Theater, Apple CEO offered the following reply:

“Probably never. Because there are secrets inside the spaceship. The problem with opening up the main facility for tours is we have so much confidential stuff around. “It’s sort of the bane of my existence to hold things confidential now.”

Cook’s answer echoes a comment about the campus last year from Apple’s head designer, Jony Ive, who called it “our house.”

“We didn’t make Apple Park for other people,” Ive said. “So I think a lot of the criticisms … are utterly bizarre, because it wasn’t made for you. And I know how we work, and you don’t.”

To put a fine point on it, you’re not getting inside one of the Apple Park buildings without being an Apple employee with a badge.
