Drone fans: FAA registration is back in force

We know that a lot of Apple World Today readers are techies who love drones, so this news will be of importance to you. As of yesterday, legislation was signed by President Trump that reverses an earlier court ruling and brings back the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) registration requirement for UAS -- unmanned aerial systems, AKA drones.

If you registered a drone during the days when it was previously required, you don't need to register again because this bill reverses what was known as the "John Taylor case". However, if you asked for a refund and asked to be removed from the registration list, you will need to re-register if you received confirmation from the FAA that your request to be removed from the database was honored.

Registration is required for any flying device that weighs over 0.55 pounds (250 grams) and uses a ground-control system with a communications link. This includes RC transmitters or Wi-Fi links such as those used for controlling a...

Apple hasn't released sales figures for the iPhone X, iPhone 8, or the iPhone 8 Plus, but a new chart shows the most expensive of the three is also the most popular.

Mixpanel's data doesn't show sales figures, but measures people picking up the new iPhones and using apps that are integrated with Mixpanel's software development kit. Collectively, it looks like the three devices are selling well and on track to overtake iPhone 7 Plus adoption over the next few months, according to Business Insider.

Apple patent is for generating a 3D model using an...

As shown by the newly granted patent 9,842,429 Apple wants your iPhone and iPad to be able to generate a 3D model based on recordings made with the device.

Per the patent your iOS gadget can can load and provide an initial display of a 3D model. As you move the iPhone, motion sensing components can detect the device movement and adjust the displayed portion of the 3D model to reflect the movement of the smartphone

By walking with the device in the user's real environment, a user can virtually navigate a representation of a 3D environment. You could record an object or environment using your iPhone, and tag the recorded images or video with movement information describing the movement of the device during the recording.

The recorded information can then be processed with the movement information to generate a 3D model of the recorded environment or object. According to the patent, such models could enable, among other things, 3D representations of photos or...

There are plenty of solutions for creating virtual Windows machines on your Mac for running Windows apps or games, but all of them -- Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, Boot Camp and VirtualBox -- require that you shell out money for a Windows license. CrossOver 17 from CodeWeavers (just $19 with our deal) is a way to buy many popular Windows apps and run them on your Mac as native programs -- there's no reason to buy that Windows license.

  • Run Windows software & games without rebooting or installing Windows OS

Five simply steps to adjust the text size on your...

By Douglas Walker

Did you know that iPhones (and iPads) have a built-in magnifier? It’s a feature that everyone will find helpful when print is tiny. It is especially useful for those of us with visual impairments.

I use it all the time for everything from checking the temperature on my thermostat to reading medicine labels and even reviewing menus in a restaurant. Enabling the feature is really easy, too. Here’s how:

  • Open the Settings App.
  • Select General and then Accessibility options.
  • Select Magnifier and switch the toggle on (green).
  • Turn on Auto-Brightness, switching the toggle on (green).

This creates a shortcut for you to use whenever you’d like. Simply tapping the home button three times will now turn your back facing camera into a Magnifier

Douglas Walker is the Assistive...

Everything you need to know about Apple’s GymKit,...

Enlarge / Apple Watch Series 2. (credit: Valentina Palladino)

While the Apple Watch is seen by many as the ultimate wearable fitness tool, it's somewhat out of place in the gym. The native Workout app has a number of exercise profiles to choose from, including activities that can only be done in the gym. But, in many ways, the Watch is best suited for outdoor activities.

But with the introduction of GymKit, Apple hopes to make the in-gym cardio experience better. Apple's system to connect the Apple Watch to compatible gym equipment started rolling out across the globe earlier this fall, and it just hit the US this week. Below is everything you need to know about GymKit as an Apple Watch user, how you can use it, and what it means for your workouts in the future....

iMac Pro to incorporate T2 chip to handle discrete...

The upcoming iMac Pro will feature new security hardware in the form of a new custom chip dubbed the T2, serving as a secure enclave for encrypted keys, giving users the ability to lock down their Mac’s boot process and also handling system functions like the camera, audio control, and managing the solid-state hard drive.

Details about the new T2 chip were revealed by Caleb Sasser, cofounder of Panic.

Per Sasser, the T2 chip combines previously discrete functions, such as the system management controller, image signal processor for FaceTime camera, audio control, and SSD control.

Like the MacBook Pro’s T1 chip, the T2 chip features a secure enclave for data such as passwords. Sasser also noted that the hardware featured an encryption engine:

“This new chip means storage encryption keys pass from the secure enclave to the hardware encryption engine in-chip — your key never leaves the chip. And, they it allows for hardware verification of OS, kernel,...

Rumor: iMac Pro could be available for sale as early...

The iMac Pro you’ve been hankering for could go on sale via Apple’s website as early as Tuesday, December 14th, the mighty Phil Schiller having been quoted as saying that a release was coming in “a matter of days.”

The desktop is rumored to be the answer to the professional community’s demands and feature Xeon processors, a 5K display, and include a Radeon Vega GPU, among other extremely high-end specs such as a 10-core CPU and is said to start at a price point of $4,999.

The entry-level model features an 8-core processor with 32 gigabytes of RAM and a 1-terabyte solid-state hard drive. With a 27-inch Retina 5K display, the chassis boasts four Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports, four full-size USB 3 ports, an SDXC card slot, and 10Gb Ethernet.

Users can upgrade the RAM to 64 or 128 gigabytes while the SSD is also configurable to 2 or 4 terabytes of storage.

Apple has apparently offered some YouTubers early access to the iMac Pro, in which Marques Brownleee...

Apple’s AiPort firmware puts the whack on KRACK

Apple has updated its updated its existing AirPort devices with firmware updates that patches vulnerabilities to KRACK attacks that allow a malicious hacker to bypass WPA2 encryption on Wi-Fi networks and make a user's data easy to view.

KRACK (Key Reinstallation AttaCK) can expose information shared on Wi-Fi networks, even over connections “secured” with data encryption and passwords. The vulnerability breaks WPA 2, the strongest and most common form of encryption used to protect data on home and business Wi-Fi networks.

Both firmware versions can be downloaded and installed via Apple's AirPort Utility on Macs or iOS devices. Version 7.7.9 is for 802.11ac hardware; the 7.6.9 version is available for 802.11n devices.
