Rumor: Apple working on second-gen AirPods featuring...

Apple is apparently working on a second-gen series of AirPods which could include “Hey Siri” support instead of requiring a tap before giving voice commands. The new model will also sport an updated wireless chip for improved Bluetooth connections.

Sources close to the story have stated that Apple is looking to update the iPods in 2018.

The current AirPods require a double-tap on the units to activate Siri. Incorporating a voice-activated “Hey Siri” command will bring AirPods in line with interacting with Apple’s voice assistant on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and HomePod.

As of 2017, Apple had stated that it will introduce a wireless charging case for the AirPods in 2018, alongside a charging plate that can accommodate an iPhone, Apple Watch, and the AirPods charging case at the same time. The updated AirPods and charging case are expected this year.

The sources also said that Apple is working on water-resistant AirPods, which aren’t expected to ship in...

DroneDeploy iOS Live Map feature revolutionizes...

As a commercial drone pilot, I'm very familiar with DroneDeploy -- it's a platform that uses an iOS app connected to a remote controller to automate aerial mapping from drones. Last week, DroneDeploy updated its app with a new feature called Live Map, which lets drone operators create real-time maps in the field on the iOS device.

Previously, users would use DroneDeploy to plan a flight to take photos, but then needed to download photos from an SD card to a computer, then upload to the DroneDeploy platform to have a map assembled. With Live Map, a drone pilot plans a flight, takes off, and then watches as maps are rendered on-screen during flight. There's no need for an internet or cell connection, and the wait for processing is eliminated.

The new Live Map feature enables high quality daily mapping. For growers and agronomists, this means...

Review: KEF Egg Wireless Digital Music System

In recent years, we've written about a lot of headphones, Bluetooth speakers, and loudspeakers. There is, however, another type of sound system that we rarely see: desktop speaker systems. Simple two-channel systems, sometimes with a subwoofer, used to be a standard accessory with every new computer purchase; these systems added sound to desktop systems and upgraded laptop sound without the need for an amplifier or DAC, and were built with desk space in mind. These days, it seems like many of us are settling for laptop speakers, and many companies are devoting their efforts either to small "personal" speakers or full-size components. KEF, however, is one of those companies that still believes in desktop speaker systems. Today we're checking out KEF's "Egg", a versatile and well-built system that brings the company's high-tech driver design to a desk-friendly package.{/exp:char_limit}

How to get yourself out of a funk

Jason Kottke:

On Tuesday, I woke up feeling a bit tired, uninspired, and just generally not in the mood to tackle my to-do list for the day. I understand myself well enough by now to know how to react to this situation (most of the time) but was curious about how other people deal with such episodes. So I asked on Twitter: “What do you do to get yourself moving when this happens to you?” I got tons of interesting responses, which I’ve organized into some broader categories in the hope that they’ll help someone out in the future.

I may go for a walk and play some guitar today.

People freaked out after robot dogs opened a door....

[VIDEO] Alex Horton, Washington Post:

In one of the scariest moments in the movie “Jurassic Park,” a pair of intelligent Velociraptors, brought back to Earth by man’s hubris, defy an assumption about their limitations: They open a kitchen door.

Now imagine that the raptors are real, transformed into headless robot dogs that can negotiate stairs, fling open doors with their robotic claws and generally overcome the puny obstacles offered up by the human technicians at Boston Dynamics.

Normally, I’d ignore or modify the sensational headline of the Post article. But it made me laugh and was (kind of) on point. Last week, we posted this video, showing a dog-like robot opening a door. People really did freak out. A bit.

Bloomberg: Apple plans AirPods upgrade

Mark Gurman, Bloomberg:

The model coming as early as this year will let people summon Apple’s Siri digital assistant without physically tapping the headphones by saying “Hey Siri.” The function will work similarly to how a user activates Siri on an iPhone or a HomePod speaker hands-free. The headphones, internally known as B288, will include an upgraded Apple-designed wireless chip for managing Bluetooth connections. The first AirPods include a chip known as the W1, and Apple released the W2 with the Apple Watch last year.

The idea for the water-resistant model is for the headphones to survive splashes of water and rain, the people said. They likely won’t be designed to be submerged in water. The latest iPhones can survive splashes, while the Apple Watch is considered “swim-proof.” Apple’s plans could change or be delayed, the people said. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

Is this enough to make you replace your AirPods with the latest and greatest?...

Gartner: Apple's iPhone sales fell 5% in...

Global sales of smartphones to end users totaled nearly 408 million units in the fourth quarter of 2017, a 5.6% decline over the fourth quarter of 2016, according to Gartner, Inc. This is the first year-on-year decline since the research group started tracking the global smartphone market in 2004.

While Apple's market share stabilized in the fourth quarter of 2017 compared to the same quarter in 2016, iPhone sales fell 5%. "Apple was in a different position this quarter than it was 12 months before, according to Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner: it had three new smartphones — the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X — yet its performance in the quarter was overshadowed by two factors.

“First, the later availability of the iPhone X led to slow upgrades to iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, as users waited to try the more-expensive model. Second, component shortages and manufacturing capacity constraints preceded a long...

Nobody wants to let Google win the war for maps all...

Mark Bergen, Bloomberg:

On any given day, there could be a half dozen autonomous cars mapping the same street corner in Silicon Valley. These cars, each from a different company, are all doing the same thing: building high-definition street maps, which may eventually serve as an on-board navigation guide for driverless vehicles.

And:

Autonomous cars require powerful sensors to see and advanced software to think. They especially need up-to-the-minute maps of every conceivable roadway to move. Whoever owns the most detailed and expansive version of these maps that vehicles read will own an asset that could be worth billions.

The motivation for the next maps war is clear. Billions of dollars at stake. This article is a fascinating look at the players and the technological approaches to capturing the next generation of maps.

The companies working on maps for autonomous vehicles are taking two different approaches. One aims to...

Apple may have big gaming plans for their set-top box. As noted by Patently Apple, the tech giant has updated their Apple TV logo trademark by adding all things related to gaming.

The filing covers “video game consoles; controllers for game consoles; video output games, namely, video output game machines for use with televisions; apparatus for electronic games adapted for use with an external display screen or monitor.” The international filing covers over 60 different countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America.

Apple turned the Apple TV into a more serious gaming console with tvOS 10 by giving developers the ability to require a third-party controller for games. Still, gamers have felt that the company has yet to truly turn...

Apple said during recent earnings calls that the number of active Apple Pay users had doubled year-on-year, with transactions more than tripling – but didn’t reveal any numbers.

Loup Ventures has today published new estimates, suggesting that there are now 127M active Apple Pay users globally, up from 62M a year ago. However, says the firm, that still represents a relatively small percentage of active iPhones …

Apple granted a patent for a ‘travel guitar’

Get ready to rock. Apple has been granted a patent (number 20180053491) for a “travel guitar” that would work with an iPad or iPhone.

According to the patent filing, it would have a reduced profile configured to house or otherwise receive or coupled to a tablet or smartphone and take advantage of one or more apps for driving the operation, functionality and/or effects associated with the travel guitar, and a string assembly capable of retracting or otherwise housing the strings to enable or facilitate configuring the travel guitar into a reduced profile.

In the patent filing, Apple says guitars have enjoyed among the highest popularity among stringed instruments. Most guitars have a solid neck rigidly coupled to either a hollow or solid body. Apple says this construction, while aiding in predictable tuning and quality guitar play, render the guitar cumbersome for travel, particularly given the additional bulk of the associated guitar case (hard or soft). While various...

Rumor: water-resistant AirPods coming this year; ’...

Apple is planning water-resistant AirPods with “Hey, Siri” support for later this year, according to Bloomberg, quoting unnamed “people familiar with the matter.”

The AirPods update (AirPods 2?) will purportedly arrive later in 2018 and let you call up Apple's digital assistant without physically tapping the headphones by saying "Hey Siri.” However, the water-resistant version won’t arrive until next year and will be designed to survey splashes of water, but not submerging.

Chances this rumor is true, according to the Sellers Research Group (that’s me): 90%. Apple will continue to update its wireless speakers as it does with all its products, so these changes make sense.

Wireless carriers sold a third of all Apple Watches...

Apple sold an estimated 2.9 million Apple Watches in the U.S. during the fourth quarter, according to Counterpoint Research (as noted by FierceWireless). And 975,000 units -- over a third -- were sold through the four major wireless carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint), with Verizon leading the way.

Counterpoint analyst Jeff Fieldhack believes that about half of Apple Watch's U.S. unit volumes were sold directly through Apple Stores. Within carrier smartwatch sales, Apple accounts for approximately 90% of all sales, he estimates.

“Apple has changed the game with their cellular connected watch,” Fieldhack says, adding that Apple’s smartwatches accounted for up to 90% of carriers’ overall smartwatch sales. “Even today's Samsung Gear3 is polarizing because of its size and is hampered by high returns due to software and pairing...

How to use Messages, Reminders, and Notes on the...

You can use Messages, Reminders, and Notes with your HomePod as long as it and your iOS device and HomePod must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and your iOS device must be the one you share your location from using Find My Friends.

All requests that require access to Contacts, Messages, Reminders, and Notes are handed off to your iOS device for processing, regardless of who’s speaking. When you’re away from home, your device is turned off, or your device isn’t on the same Wi-Fi network as HomePod, these requests won’t be accepted by HomePod.

Set up your iOS device for personal requests. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Share My Location > From, then choose This Device. Siri must also be enabled on the device.

Send a message. Say “Hey Siri, send a message to Chris saying that I’ll bring the vacuum cleaner with me.”  If the recipient replies within a few minutes, you’ll hear a ding.

Read messages. Say “Hey Siri, read my unread...

Apple international regulatory filings hint at two...

It’s the regulatory applications that sometimes tell you when the really cool stuff is coming.

Apple has obtained permission to sell two new iPads in several Eurasian countries, suggesting that the company is planning to announce them in the near future.

Per Consomac, the Eurasian Economic Commission, which oversees Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, this week approved “A1893” and “A1954” models. Those model numbers don’t correspond to any existing iPads or current Apple products.

Apple has also been granted permission to bring assorted iPad and iPhone “samples” into the region. These units feature “CC” and “AA” prefixes in front of their model numbers and represents the first time Apple has won EEC permission for samples.

The upcoming iPad models could represent a significant step forward and code strings in the iOS 11.3 betas currently refer to a “Modern” model. Before the announcement of the iPhone X, pre-release iOS 11 code...

The company offered the following description via this press release:

Our initial mobile 5G deployments this year will be based on 3GPP standards and operate over mmWave spectrum. We will use mmWave to provide mobile 5G in some areas, and then we will deploy the technology on additional spectrum bands.
