Amazon’s fake review problem

An interesting post by Brian Bien on Amazon fake reviews, with an example of three very different reviews of the same product, all of which had this exact sentence:

The light can be pretty bright, you can adjust it where it’ll be dim and slowly brighten 30 minutes before the alarm time.

Brian makes the point:

Amazon – who has some of the world’s most advanced ML – really needs to step up its review fraud detection game. Imagine how great the Amazon shopping experience would be if we could trust its reviews.

This is one of the great potential values of machine learning. Apple’s early machine learning frameworks focused on two specific areas: Image Recognition and Natural Language Processing. Image recognition helps pick out images of cats, or roses, or your best friend Francis from your photo library. Natural Language Processing (NLP) focuses on parsing streams of text to pull out relevant details.

The fake reviews problem is a perfect problem for...

Want Siri to whisper to you? It could happen

At some point Siri, Apple’s personal digital assistant, may whisper to you if you wish. Apple has filed for a patent (number 20170358301).

Systems and processes for detecting and/or providing a whispered speech response are provided. In one example, speech is received from a user, and based on the speech input, determined that a whispered speech response is to be provided. Upon determining that a whispered speech response is to be provided, the whispered speech response is generated and provided to the user.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that a whispered response would be useful, for example, when a user is working at a cubicle with other co-workers surrounding him/her. Or a user may also ask their iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch a question while attending a meeting in a conference room with other meeting participants.

Or a user may also speak to a device while studying in a library where speaking loudly may be prohibited. Under such circumstances, Apple says...

Tudio Klip can help prevent Lightning cables from...

By Aaron Lee

Trouble with fraying Lightning and 30-pin cables? Try the Tudio Klip, a two-piece plastic clip that snaps onto Lightning or 30-pin Apple charging cables, protecting the sensitive area of the cable that most frequently frays and splits.

The clip works by creating a cage around the cable, preventing wear and tear and limiting how much the cable can bend. The Klip comes in five different colors with a design that complements the current styling of Apple charging cables. Measuring 0.59 inches in length and .08 ounces it adds little bulk to the cable.

One $7.99 pack of Klips comes with two clips, one for each end of the cable. Users simply slide on the colored piece over the cable and then snap on the other half. Once on, the sturdy device locks the frequently fraying cable parts into place. By protecting the original Apple chargers, Klip eliminates the need to purchase...

AirPods reportedly sold out in week before Christmas

It may be harder to find Apple’s AirPods in time for Christmas.

Over on Apple’s online store, the company is now quoting delivery of the units in the first and second weeks of January. As such, you might have to hunt around for the headphones if you want to get them under the Christmas tree for a loved one on the 25th.

Best Buy, Verizon, and Sprint all list early January delivery dates or no availability at all. B&H also shows AirPods as back-ordered. AT&T seems to have some availability for 2-day shipping, but be sure to act fast as that could change within a few minutes.

You might have better luck in carrier retail stores, Best Buy, and Apple Store locations, which could still get a few units in throughout the coming week, but you’ll have to show up early.

AirPods have faced supply issues since the beginning and Apple seems to be struggling to keep up with the increased holiday demand. Tim Cook said in August that Apple was increasing...

Rent or Own Movies and TV Shows With Redbox On Demand

Redbox is testing a new digital service called Redbox On Demand. It’s in beta, and only a small number of customers can try it out. But it lets you rent or own the latest movies and certain TV shows to complement your physical purchases. You can stream or download movies and watch from your iPhone, iPad, MacBook, or Apple TV. Unlike Netflix or Hulu, it’s not a subscription service either. It’s purely transactional, and you pay for what you want. Prices vary depending on your selection, but movie rental generally starts at US$1.99, while movie purchases start around US$3.99. TV episodes can be purchased starting at US$1.99, and entire seasons can be had starting at US$12.99.

Mac: Satechi Aluminum Type-C Clamp Hub Pro for iMac

While the new iMac Pro lacks the internal expansion capabilities of prior “Pro” desktop Macs, Satechi at least has some of that covered with its new Aluminum Type-C Clamp Hub Pro. Available for pre-order today and shipping in January, Satechi’s new hub connects to one of your iMac’s Thunderbolt 3 ports and then clamps onto the bottom of your iMac — either the 2017 iMac Pro, iMac Retina 4K, and 27-inch iMac Retina 5K — and provides a front-facing data-only USB-C port, three front-facing USB 3.0 ports with up to 5 Gbps data transfer speeds, and a Micro/SD card reader.

Opinion: The 10-Core iMac Pro sans additional...

With the iMac Pro officially going on sale yesterday, we now know more about Apple’s powerful, professional-oriented all-in-one desktop. The most exciting new thing about the iMac Pro, besides the fact that it comes with a cool new Space Gray housing and matching accessories, is that it’s the first iMac model to feature more than a quad-core processor.

Multicore processors are all the rage these days for so-called prosumers, and for good reason — they provide a lot more processing power for apps that can wield that additional power in parallel, and the cost-barrier to entry, led by AMD’s Ryzen CPUs, has been lowered. Video editing workflows with Final Cut Pro X instantly...

The beautiful lofree Four Seasons Mechanical Keyboard. Photo ©2017, Steven Sande

Back in March of 2017, I had the pleasure of reviewing the lofree Mechanical Keyboard, a retro-themed keyboard that garnered a lot of fans and backers on Indiegogo. lofree is back with a new version of the keyboard that has a slight redesign based on customer feedback and comes in four different models to capture the essence of the four seasons.

As with the first Indiegogo campaign, the Four Seasons Mechanical Keyboard will ship — as of this posting, it has reached 794 percent of its goal, and will be available in April 2018. Early backers have until the end of December to get one of the keyboards for as little as US$74.

The keyboard is designed for...

Review: TEAC AI-101DA Integrated Amplifier with USB...

Recently we've reviewed some big, expensive, powerful speaker amplifiers. We've found that big, expensive, powerful gear often sounds very good. It is important, however, to remember that audio equipment can sound good even though it's small, inexpensive, and relatively low-powered. Sometimes a little box can do it all. Today we're looking at a tiny, affordable integrated amplifier from Japanese manufacturer TEAC. We think that for many users, TEAC's AI-101DA may be the "Swiss Army Knife" of stereo components.{/exp:char_limit}

Grand Court nixes U.S. government’s efforts to back...

The European Union’s Grand Court has rejected an U.S. government request to intervene in Apple’s fight against an EU order on back taxes. The Cupertino, California-based company is appealing an order to pay approximately $15.3 billion in back taxes to Ireland due to illegal tax breaks.

The Obama administration disagreed with the move, saying the EU was trying to take money the U.S. should receive. A Grand Court judge says the U.S. failed to prove it had a “direct interest in the result of the case.”

The European Commission, Europe’s anti-trust and consumer investigation agency, claimed that Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands have attracted...

iMac Pro first impressions: Beauty of a beast

Rene Ritchie, iMore:

This isn’t a beloved tower reimagined inside Darth Vader’s helmet — an OpenCL monster designed for a future that never quite materialized. This is the same iMac many of us already know and love, just gutted of its consumer-grade engine and rebuilt for a very different kind of pro. The kind that was already sold on the all-in-one but always wished it was hit by enough gamma rays to make it more hulkingly pro.

And that’s exactly what Apple is delivering: A sleek space-gray chassis filled to the aluminum limit with next-generation Intel, AMD, and Apple muscle. Starting at $4999.

This is richly researched, well written. Rene has pulled together a real technologist’s view of the iMac Pro. There’s a lot to learn here, especially the deep dive into the Intel Xeon W processors at the heart of the iMac Pro.

Just go read it. Does this guy ever sleep?
