Apple Shuts Swift Mailing List, Migrates to Online...

An anonymous reader writes:
Apple's Swift project "has completed the process of migrating to the Swift Forums as the primary method for discussion and communication!" announced a blog post on Friday. "The former mailing lists have been shut down and archived, and all mailing list content has been imported into the new forum system."
While they're still maintaining a few Swift-related mailing lists, they're moving discussions into online forums divided into four main categories: Evolution, Development, Using Swift, and Site Feedback. Forum accounts can be set up using either email registration or GitHub accounts.
It was one year ago that Swift creator Chris Lattner answered questions from Slashdot readers.

Apple Might Discontinue the iPhone X This Summer

BGR shares a startling prediction from Ming-Chi Kuo, the Apple analyst at KGI securities:
Kuo -- who we should note has an exemplary track record with respect to iPhone rumors -- adds that Apple may opt to discontinue the current iPhone X entirely if sales are underwhelming. "KGI also expects a trio of iPhone models in the fall of 2018," AppleInsider notes. "He predicts the iPhone X will be 'end of life' in the summer of 2018, instead of being retained as a lower-cost option in the following year." If Kuo's projection pans out, this would represent a marked shift in Apple's iPhone sales strategy. Going back nearly a decade, Apple has always positioned older iPhone models around as a wallet-friendly alternative for users who weren't keen on paying a premium for Apple's latest and greatest.

The hottest Apple-related news for the week of Jan....

There’s a lot happening in the world of Apple news this week. Following are the hottest articles for the week of Jan. 15-20.

Apple has announced a new set of investments to build on its commitment to support the American economy and its workforce, concentrated in three areas where the tech giant has had the greatest impact on job creation: direct employment by Apple, spending and investment with Apple’s domestic suppliers and manufacturers, and fueling the app economy that the company created with iPhone and the App Store.

Apple has landed a 10-episode comedy series executive produced by and starring Kristen Wiig, the Saturday Night Live grad and movie actress (GhostBusters,...

Apple’s HomePod has received official FCC approval, which means the smart speaker should be available any day now. Plus, according to the Taipei Times, Inventec Corp., one of the two assemblers for the smart speaker, has released an initial shipment of about one million.

HomePod shipments this year are expected to reach between 10 million and 12 million units, with Inventec and Hon Hai each fulfilling half of the orders, the article adds. Apple unveiled its first voice-controlled smart speaker during the June 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference.

The HomePod was originally slated to arrive before the end of the year. However, in November, Apple issued a statement saying that it needed more time before the product is ready for customers.

The $349 smart speaker is just under seven inches tall and looks like a piece of furniture. It will be available...

Apple Daily Report for January 19, 2018

The AWT News Update is on a one-day hiatus while my compadre, Steve, takes care of some personal business. In its place, I’ll offer a text-only (no podcast) summary of breaking stories with a tip o’ my hat to my former website, Apple Daily Report.

Apple has introduced an all new design for its App Store apps on the web. You can see ‘em by accessing or searching for any iOS or Mac app while on the web.

Def Leppard has released their full catalogue of material on streaming services for the first time. A dispute over royalty payments between the Sheffield outfit and Universal Music – who own the rights to the original recordings – has meant classic albums such as Pyromania and Hysteria have never been available on sites such as Apple Music until now.

Hands-on: ‘Flir One Pro’ turns your iPhone into a...

The human eye is amazing, but it’s limited as to what it can see. That’s where imaging tools like thermal cameras can come in handy, allowing you to see and diagnose problems that are normally invisible to the eye. This thermal, or infrared energy, is present in all matter, but because its wavelength is beyond the scope of what the human eye can discern, it’s invisible to us without the necessary tools.

Thanks to modern-day smartphones like the iPhone, these tools are now a lot more accessible to the everyday person. One such example is the Flir One Pro — a portable thermal camera attachment that connects directly to an iPhone’s Lightning port.

If you’re a homeowner, or just someone who’s curious about the type of technology that allows you to see through walls and identify heat signatures like you’re in the movie Predator, then Flir’s One Pro is a mighty-impressive, if not tiny, piece of kit. Watch our hands-on video...

Mac: Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac

Although Apple’s own iWork suite provides a decent set of productivity tools for personal use, it’s pretty hard to argue that Microsoft’s Office suite remains the 800-pound gorilla in the room when it comes to features and compatibility for exchanging documents with others. Even though Microsoft tends to lag a bit behind in their Mac versions, they provide reasonably good support for the Mac platform, making it easier for users to work on files from their own computers, or even to use their Macs at work. With the latest update to Office 2016 for Mac, Microsoft has finally brought real-time collaboration and cloud-based autosave to the Mac apps, bringing them closer to their Windows brethren, and more importantly allowing Mac users into the collaborative playground of their Windows-using colleagues.

Apple tops the ‘World’s Most Admired Companies’ list...

Apple has taken the top spot on Fortune's annual "World's Most Admired Companies" list — for the 11th year in a row.

Fortune collaborated with the Korn Ferry research on this survey of corporate reputations. They began with a universe of about 1,500 candidates: the 1,000 largest U.S. companies ranked by revenue, along with non-U.S. companies in Fortune’s Global 500 database that have revenues of $10 billion or more.

Fortune and Korn Ferry then winnowed the assortment to the highest-revenue companies in each industry, a total of 680 in 29 countries. The top-rated companies were picked from that pool of 680; the executives who voted work at the companies in that group.

To determine the best-regarded companies in 52 industries, Korn Ferry asked executives, directors, and analysts to rate enterprises in their own industry on nine criteria, from investment value and quality of...

Analyst: iPhone X sales weaker than expected, but...

In a note to clients — as noted by MacRumors — KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says demand for the iPhone X has been weaker than expected (mainly in China), but that larger-sized iPhone models in the pipeline should see Apple grow its overall worldwide shipments year-on-year.

He’s revised the first and second quarters 2018 shipments of iPhone X to 18 million units and 13 million units, respectively. That’s lower than market consensus of 20-30 million and 15-20 million units.

What’s more, Kuo feels that the iPhone X design may be a one-up with production ceasing in the summer when replacements for the fall are being produced. Overall shipments of the high-end smartphone will be around 62 million units, lower than his previous forecast of 80 million units, he says.

Kuo is forecasting three iPhone models in 2018: an OLED model that...

For the first time in over 20 years, Office is built...

A new version of Microsoft Office 2016 just shipped (release notes here).

What really caught my eye was this tweet from Microsoft’s Erik Schwiebert:

Mac Office 2016 version 16 is now live! For the first time in over 20 years, Office is again built out of one codebase for all platforms (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android)!https://t.co/6gNdKTOEHl

— Erik Schwiebert (@Schwieb) January 18, 2018

As Erik says, that is a massive code realignment. My 2 cents, this is good news for all Mac Office users. The Office experience will now have more consistency across platforms, and there’s more of a chance for new features to make their way to the Mac at the same time...

Comment: With a rumored new iPhone lineup, it’s time...

I’ve commented before on Apple’s rather messy iPhone lineup. The company currently sells the iPhone SE, the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 7, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X. Given the Plus model variations, and ignoring colors and storage capacities, that’s eight different phones across four different sizes.

If we ignore the relatively minor form factor differences between the iPhone 6s, 7 and 8, that’s also three different designs.

But KGI’s predictions of what we can expect this fall, reiterated today, would make for a much more sensible lineup …

Criminal complain filed against Tim Cook regarding ‘...

A South Korean consumer group, Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty, has filed a criminal complaint against Apple CEO Tim Cook regarding “Batterygate,” alleging the company deliberately shortens the lifespan  of its handsets.

Apple has published an apology letter to customers for slowing down older phones to compensate for erratic battery performance. The tech giant is offering $29 replacement batteries for those with an iPhone 6 or later. The discount, which represents a $50 savings, starts in late January and ends in December 2018. Apple will also add more battery health information to iOS to let users know when the battery begins to compromise performance.

“For the sake of its loyal fans, Apple has to take responsibility over the slowing iPhones,” Park Soon-jang, an official at the advocacy group told...

Apple has announced 70 colleges and universities in Europe have adopted Everyone Can Code, a comprehensive program designed by Apple to help everyone learn to build mobile apps. These colleges and universities are adopting Apple’s App Development with Swift curriculum.

Everyone Can Code is a program designed by Apple to help everyone learn how to code, creating opportunities for all students and preparing them for the workforce. The program includes a range of free resources, from helping students explore basic coding concepts to building fully functional apps. Touted as safe, fast, and expressive, Swift appeals to developers who are aiming to build on Apple’s multiple platforms, such as iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS.

Following a major overhaul of the App Store in iOS 11, Apple has quietly revamped the App Store’s web preview pages to bring them more in line with new iOS design aesthetic.
