The best deals we can find

The Wirecutter:

The holiday season is approaching once again, and that screaming you hear is the sound of Internet users everywhere becoming inundated with holiday “deals.” Thousands of deals. Tens of thousands of deals. And, as you may know from experience, most of those deals don’t actually result in any kind of savings.

In fact, they are often a waste of money due to marketing trickery or just plain bad products. In fact, according to our research so far only 0.6% of the 42,000 deals we’ve studied since early November are actually a good deal on a good piece of gear. Our attitude is dictated by a general idea: if we wouldn’t buy it ourselves or tell our friends and family to do so, we won’t list it. If the price or the item itself is not good, we won’t list it.

This time of year, we are inundated by “deals”. The folks at The Wirecutter do a great job of separating the wheat from the chaff. It’s also a great list if you are looking for gift ideas.

I’m buying people gift cards for Christmas, and you...

Vox:

I write about economics for a living, so I understand concepts of deadweight loss and depreciation and inefficiency.

That said, I still ask my parents for gift cards for Christmas every year. And I buy them for people, too.

I know this is a sacrilege, and you might, too — there are all sorts of articles out there about how gift cards are sincerely a terrible, horrible gift. And yet I keep wanting them. It could be because I’m just a bad decision-maker, but I think there are excellent reasons to get a person a gift card … provided you buy it for the right kind of person.

I think gift cards can have their place for certain people. Do you give gift cards? Do you like to get them?

Ask Slashdot: Objective C Vs. Swift For a New iOS...

RegularDave writes: I'm a recent grad from a master's program in a potentially worthless social science field, and I've considered getting into iOS development. Several of my friends who were in similar situations after grad school have done so and are making a healthy living getting contract work. Although they had CS and Physics degrees going into iOS, neither had worked in objective C and both essentially went through a crash courses (either self-taught or through intensive classes) in order to get their first gigs. I have two questions. First, am I an idiot for thinking I can teach myself either objective C or Swift on my own without any academic CS background (I've tinkered in HTML, CSS, and C classes online with some success)? Second, if I'm not an idiot for attempting to learn either language, which should I concentrate on?

FingerKey app lets you unlock your Mac using iPhone’...

A new app called FingerKey allows Mac users to unlock their computer using Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 5s, 6, or 6 Plus.

That means you’ll be able to login to your Mac using your iPhone’s fingerprint sensor rather than typing in a password each time. The app takes advantage of Apple opening up the Touch ID sensor to third-party apps for logins after previously being reserved for unlocking the device itself and authenticating App Store and iTunes purchases.

The FingerKey app includes the ability to unlock multiple computers from a distance, 256-bit AES encryption, and a Notification Center Today...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer on iTunes

Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn't due in theaters for about a year, but that shouldn't stop you from getting your Sci-Fi nerd on in a big way because you can see the movie's first trailer today. The minute and a half long trailer doesn't show any of the main characters - meaning no Luke, Leia, or Han - but it has plenty of stormtroopers, droids, X-winds, and the Millenium Falcon. Also, a triple-blade Sith lightsaber. That's right: a triple-blade Sith lightsaber. What's missing is Jar Jar Binks, which means there's a really good chance Episode 7 will be substantially better than all three prequel movies combined.

Oddworld Stranger’s Wrath first debuted on the original Xbox in 2005 to praise from critics and today the game has officially arrived for iOS devices with some new additions and enhancements specifically for the smaller screens.

Developed by Oddworld Inhabitants, Stranger’s Wrath is the latest installment in the franchise despite being first released on the original Xbox almost 10 years ago. The title foregoes the side scrolling puzzler gameplay that made the original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee and follow up games in the series popular when released on PlayStation in the late 90’s. Instead, Stranger’s Wrath is half first-person shooter, half third-person platformed with lots of the usual Oddworld exploration and theatrical soundtrack.

When the "Guns of August" began firing 100 years ago, few expected it to be a long war, and fewer still expected it to be a "World War." However, the "Great War," as it was known to contemporaries, in fact was destined to become the First World War -- and it truly was the first modern war. Today it is easy to look back at the Second World War for providing great technical advancements. It ushered in the atomic bomb, jet aircraft and even Silly Putty; however, the First World War also was a war of great technological advances.

iWork ’14 review: Still waiting for that great leap...

When Apple released the 2013 edition of the productivity suite formerly known as iWork, it represented a radical departure from iWork '09 and earlier versions. The "iWork" moniker disappeared along with upfront costs for many, and those were only two of the 2013 update's many changes. Things only move forward from there as the 2014 iteration doesn't backtrack, so those hoping for the old iWork to rise from the ashes will be disappointed.

However, Apple isn't plowing full steam ahead in the new direction either. This year's updates don't break much—if any—new ground. Rather, they add refinements, and version numbers reflect this: on the Mac, Keynote is now version 6.5, Pages 5.5, and Numbers 3.5 (up from 6.2.2, 5.2.2, and 3.2.2, respectively). And while...

Behind Apple's Sapphire Screen Debacle

Frankie70 (803801) writes Apple invested more than $1 billion in an effort to make sapphire one of iPhone 6's selling point. But the iPhone 6 was released without the sapphire screen. GT Advanced Technologies, the small company chosen to supply Apple with enormous quantities of cheap sapphire, declared bankruptcy a month later. Recent documents from GT's bankruptcy proceedings, and conversations with people familiar with operations at Apple and GT, provide several clues as to what went wrong. GT said that to save costs, Apple decided not to install backup power supplies, and multiple outages ruined whole batches of sapphire. The terms Apple negotiated committed GT to supplying a huge amount of sapphire, but put Apple under no obligation to buy it. In its bankruptcy documents, GT would later accuse Apple of using "bait-and-switch" tactics, and said the terms of the deal were "onerous and massively one-sided."

Upcoming port brings CarPlay to iPhone/iPad without...

Developer Adam Bell has published a preview of his latest project that attempts to allow CarPlay, Apple’s iOS feature usually reserved for in-car entertainment systems, to run directly on iOS devices.

Bell notes in a post that the port of CarPlay running on top of SpringBoard is “buggy at the moment,” but published the video and images above and below showing it running on an iPad and an iPhone 6. Bell confirmed the port is still in the early stages, but said it will be a free and open source project.

In addition to iPad (pictured above and in the video below), the developer posted the screenshot below...

Two-factor authentication gets physical with USB U2F...

I’ve written a few times about two-factor authentication (2FA), where a password (something you know) is paired with a second item, like a device-generated token or one-time code sent via SMS (something you have). A password can be stolen or sometimes extracted, so a second factor makes it substantially more difficult for someone who lacks physical access to you or your stuff to break into one of your accounts. This restricts attackers from accomplishing wholesale attacks across thousands or millions of accounts, unless 2FA is badly implemented or attackers find an exploit.

While Apple has tried to take the pain out of 2FA through its trusted device approach with iCloud accounts, many people still believe this is too complicated for average users to employ. There needs to be something powerful, simple, and ubiquitously supported, they argue—as do I. Apple’s solution...

Looks like no Black Friday deals in European Apple...

While Apple Store customers in the U.S. can look forward to gift cards on selected purchases on Black Friday, it seems European customers may be missing out. Apple last year offered its European customers discounted pricing rather than gift cards, but rumors – including from the usually reliable MacG – say that there will be neither cards nor discounts this year …

While Apple’s U.S. site shows the gift card offer, the European sites we’ve checked refer only to the donations Apple will make to Project (RED), with nothing about gift cards or discounts.

Back of iDevices set to lose ugly FCC markings as E-...

Apple’s master of minimalism Jony Ive probably hates the fact that the company is legally required to mark the back of iPhones and iPads with a bunch of regulatory stampings, but as of today the largest of them – the FCC approval symbols – will no longer be required.

The E-Label Act first proposed in July has today been signed into law by President Obama. Manufacturers will still be required to display FCC symbols, but can now do so in software rather than cluttering up the rear of the casing.

Apple will probably leave the markings in place on current devices, removing them as of the next generation. Settings > General > About seems the most likely...

Six second-screen apps just for NFL fans

In an era of always-near smartphones and tablets, it can be difficult to pay attention to one thing at a time—especially when you’re watching football. How can you resist the urge to zip through your Twitter feed, share your thoughts on that last big play, and constantly check scores for games you’re not watching? And if you’re a fantasy football nut, chances are you’re thinking about a half-dozen players on other teams even when your home team is on the big screen.

If you can’t resist having a second (or third, or fourth) screen in view while watching NFL action on Thanksgiving Day and for the rest of the season, at least make sure you’re using apps that will get you the info you need quickly without taking up too much of your attention span. Here are six apps to consider grabbing, from officially licensed companions to entertaining games that might even make a lackluster showdown seem exciting.

In the face of increasing security measures on consumer devices, the US Department of Justice appears to be returning to old school tactics to get at data in devices. A judge in New York ordered an unnamed smartphone manufacturer to provide technical assistance in unlocking a device, something prosecutors argued under the All Writs Act of 1789. While the All Writs Act has been used in the past in technological situations, it could be the de facto means of law enforcement data requests in the future....
