Gartner: Apple's iPhone sales fell 5% in...

Global sales of smartphones to end users totaled nearly 408 million units in the fourth quarter of 2017, a 5.6% decline over the fourth quarter of 2016, according to Gartner, Inc. This is the first year-on-year decline since the research group started tracking the global smartphone market in 2004.

While Apple's market share stabilized in the fourth quarter of 2017 compared to the same quarter in 2016, iPhone sales fell 5%. "Apple was in a different position this quarter than it was 12 months before, according to Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner: it had three new smartphones — the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X — yet its performance in the quarter was overshadowed by two factors.

“First, the later availability of the iPhone X led to slow upgrades to iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, as users waited to try the more-expensive model. Second, component shortages and manufacturing capacity constraints preceded a long...

Survey: there are 127 million global active Apple...

A new survey from Gene Munster's Loup Ventures finds Apple Pay’s year-over-year growth has been “impressive” with active users more than doubling. Still, the research group believes that only 16% of iPhone users have enabled the digital payment service.

Still, Loup Ventures is optimistic that Apple Pay will gain widespread adoption over the next 3-5 years given integration OS and iOS makes it the easiest to use digital wallet. The research group’s survey showed that:

  • The Top 100 retailers in the U.S. were checked for Apple Pay compatibility for online (desktop, mobile and apps) and found the growth of adoption has been high (9 to 85%), but off of a small base.
  • The total number of these retailers supporting Apple Pay online now ranges between 14-24%.
  • The number of banks globally that support Apple Pay increased in the past...

Filing hints at bigger gaming plans for the Apple TV

Apple may have big gaming plans for their set-top box. As noted by Patently Apple, the tech giant has updated their Apple TV logo trademark by adding all things related to gaming.

The filing covers “video game consoles; controllers for game consoles; video output games, namely, video output game machines for use with televisions; apparatus for electronic games adapted for use with an external display screen or monitor.” The international filing covers over 60 different countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America.

Apple turned the Apple TV into a more serious gaming console with tvOS 10 by giving developers the ability to require a third-party controller for games. Still, gamers have felt that the company has yet to truly turn...

Apple granted a patent for a ‘travel guitar’

Get ready to rock. Apple has been granted a patent (number 20180053491) for a “travel guitar” that would work with an iPad or iPhone.

According to the patent filing, it would have a reduced profile configured to house or otherwise receive or coupled to a tablet or smartphone and take advantage of one or more apps for driving the operation, functionality and/or effects associated with the travel guitar, and a string assembly capable of retracting or otherwise housing the strings to enable or facilitate configuring the travel guitar into a reduced profile.

In the patent filing, Apple says guitars have enjoyed among the highest popularity among stringed instruments. Most guitars have a solid neck rigidly coupled to either a hollow or solid body. Apple says this construction, while aiding in predictable tuning and quality guitar play, render the guitar cumbersome for travel, particularly given the additional bulk of the associated guitar case (hard or soft). While various...

Rumor: water-resistant AirPods coming this year; ’...

Apple is planning water-resistant AirPods with “Hey, Siri” support for later this year, according to Bloomberg, quoting unnamed “people familiar with the matter.”

The AirPods update (AirPods 2?) will purportedly arrive later in 2018 and let you call up Apple's digital assistant without physically tapping the headphones by saying "Hey Siri.” However, the water-resistant version won’t arrive until next year and will be designed to survey splashes of water, but not submerging.

Chances this rumor is true, according to the Sellers Research Group (that’s me): 90%. Apple will continue to update its wireless speakers as it does with all its products, so these changes make sense.

Apple sold an estimated 2.9 million Apple Watches in the U.S. during the fourth quarter, according to Counterpoint Research (as noted by FierceWireless). And 975,000 units -- over a third -- were sold through the four major wireless carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint), with Verizon leading the way.

Counterpoint analyst Jeff Fieldhack believes that about half of Apple Watch's U.S. unit volumes were sold directly through Apple Stores. Within carrier smartwatch sales, Apple accounts for approximately 90% of all sales, he estimates.

“Apple has changed the game with their cellular connected watch,” Fieldhack says, adding that Apple’s smartwatches accounted for up to 90% of carriers’ overall smartwatch sales. “Even today's Samsung Gear3 is polarizing because of its size and is hampered by high returns due to software and pairing...

You can use Messages, Reminders, and Notes with your HomePod as long as it and your iOS device and HomePod must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and your iOS device must be the one you share your location from using Find My Friends.

All requests that require access to Contacts, Messages, Reminders, and Notes are handed off to your iOS device for processing, regardless of who’s speaking. When you’re away from home, your device is turned off, or your device isn’t on the same Wi-Fi network as HomePod, these requests won’t be accepted by HomePod.

Set up your iOS device for personal requests. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Share My Location > From, then choose This Device. Siri must also be enabled on the device.

Send a message. Say “Hey Siri, send a message to Chris saying that I’ll bring the vacuum cleaner with me.”  If the recipient replies within a few minutes, you’ll hear a ding.

It’s the regulatory applications that sometimes tell you when the really cool stuff is coming.

Apple has obtained permission to sell two new iPads in several Eurasian countries, suggesting that the company is planning to announce them in the near future.

Per Consomac, the Eurasian Economic Commission, which oversees Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, this week approved “A1893” and “A1954” models. Those model numbers don’t correspond to any existing iPads or current Apple products.

Apple has also been granted permission to bring assorted iPad and iPhone “samples” into the region. These units feature “CC” and “AA” prefixes in front of their model numbers and represents the first time Apple has won EEC permission for samples.

The upcoming iPad models could represent a significant step forward and code strings in the iOS 11.3 betas currently refer to a “Modern” model. Before the announcement of the iPhone X, pre-release iOS 11 code...

Apple In Talks To Buy Cobalt Directly From Miners

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Bloomberg: Apple Inc. is in talks to buy long-term supplies of cobalt directly from miners for the first time, according to people familiar with the matter, seeking to ensure it will have enough of the key battery ingredient amid industry fears of a shortage driven by the electric vehicle boom. The iPhone maker is one of the world's largest end users of cobalt for the batteries in its gadgets, but until now it has left the business of buying the metal to the companies that make its batteries. The talks show that the tech giant is keen to ensure that cobalt supplies for its iPhone and iPad batteries are sufficient, with the rapid growth in battery demand for electric vehicles threatening to create a shortage of the raw material. About a quarter of global cobalt production is used in smartphones. Apple is seeking contracts to secure several thousand metric tons of cobalt a year for five years or longer. Its first discussions on cobalt deals...

Tony Fadell and Benoît Mintiens Discuss That Crazy...

Tony Fadell, former Apple executive and the father of the iPod, recently did an interview with Benoît Mintiens, a watch guy and the founder of Watch company Ressence. You might have seen the totally crazy looking Ressence Type 2 watch. Gorgeous and very, very different looking, the Ressence Type 2 is a mechanical watch married to your smartphone through what they call an “e-Crown.” Bloomberg published a piece with Hodinkee on the Type 2, and it included the video interview below. In it, Messrs. Fadell and Mintiens talk about working together and the early development of the Type 2, but they also talk about the e-Crown. You also get to see the Type 2 in action. It’s interesting, but note at the end where Mr. Mintiens notes that the watch crown has been around for 176 years. “So it’s about time to think about something else.” That sure sounds like a pot shot at Apple, whose Digital Crown is effectively rooted in that same 176 year history. It’s an interesting watch, an...

Have a HomePod and a Mac? You need Rogue Amoeba’s...

If you have a HomePod and a Mac and want to use them to their full combined potential, you need Rogue Amoeba’s $29 Airfoil for Mac

As I mentioned in my review of Apple’s wireless speaker, when playing the 1996 action thriller, Broken Arrow on the iMac in my home office, I wanted to play the audio on the wireless speaker. However, when I clicked the AirPlay icon at the bottom left of the screen, the only device I could select was my Apple TV. No HomePod icon appeared. It’s not as convenient as simply using AirPlay would be, but Airfoil does allow me to play movie audio on the HomePod — and it does lots of other nifty things, as well.

But let’s back up. The Rogue Amoeba app lets you stream any audio from your Mac to just about any...

Slashdot Asks: What Do People Misunderstand or...

In an interview with Fast Company, Apple CEO Tim Cook says people who have not used his company's products miss "how different Apple is versus other technology companies." A person who is just looking at the company's revenues and profits, says Cook, might think that Apple "is good at making money." But he says "that's not who we are. In Cook's view, Apple is: We're a group of people who are trying to change the world for the better, that's who we are. For us, technology is a background thing. We don't want people to have to focus on bits and bytes and feeds and speeds. We don't want people to have to go to multiple [systems] or live with a device that's not integrated. We do the hardware and the software, and some of the key services as well, to provide a whole system. We do that in such a way that we infuse humanity into it. We take our values very seriously, and we want to make sure all of our products reflect those values. There are things like making sure that we're running...

A woman who had a stroke while on a FaceTime video call with her sister, says the technology saved her life, according to the BBC.

Opokua Kwapong, a 58-year-old resident of New York, was on a call with her sister, Adumea Sapong, in Manchester, when Sapong noticed that her elder sibling, who lives alone, "didn't look right” and that her speech was slurred. She told her sister needed to hang up and immediately see a doctor.

After some prompting, Opokua Kwapong hung up the call and dialed 911. Following hospital scans, she was diagnosed as having had a clot on the brain. The stroke has left her paralyzed on her left side.

"There is no doubt that FaceTime saved my life,” Kwapong, who works as a food scientist, told the BBC.

An effort to block the Andrews government’s deal with Apple to build a store in Melbourne, Australia’s Federation Square has failed in parliament, clearing the way for the controversial retail development, reports The Age.

In February it was reported that the "Pizza Hut pagoda" design of the store had been “overwhelmingly been rejected by the community,” with the Melbourne City Council receiving about 800 submissions rejecting the design. There was a motion by Councillor Rohan Leppert to lobby the government for a new design for the store and public consultation.

Business Insider: Under CEO Tim Cook's watch, Apple has sold hundreds of millions of iPhones, booked hundreds of billions of dollars in profit, and launched new products like AirPods and Apple Watch. In fact, Cook says, he's never had a bad year as CEO of Apple. "I've only had good years. No, seriously," he said in an interview with Fast Company. "Even when we were idling from a revenue point of view -- it was like $6 billion every year -- those were some incredibly good years because you could begin to feel the pipeline getting better, and you could see it internally. Externally, people couldn't see that," he continued.

AWT TV Episode 36: February 20, 2018

Welcome to AWT TV, a weekly show featuring Steve Sande, Dennis Sellers and Marty Edwards of Apple World Today. Each week we'll discuss what's happened in the world of Apple, talk about new apps and accessories, maybe even have a demonstration or two of the latest software.

This week, Marty and Steve were back with another all-tips show! Steve started off with a quick tip on how to find AirDrop in iOS 11. Seriously, have you tried finding the AirDrop controls? It's like Apple doesn't want people to use AirDrop! Fortunately, they're hidden in plain sight in the Control Center.

Marty is the expert in all things Control Center, and he showed us all how to make your iOS 11 life easier by adding just about every possible control to Control Center. Many of the controls respond one way with a tap, another with a tap and hold (or 3D Touch), so it's worth experimenting. ...

Smart Home Diary: Adding HomePod, smart(ish) heating...

I explained in my first HomePod Diary piece that there was one smart home issue we needed to address: while I’m happy to use Siri to control everything from my Apple Watch or iPhone, my partner would often find that she wanted to switch lights on or off while her phone was in another room. We’d partially addressed this with Hue dimmer switches, but wanted more flexibility.

Some kind of smart speaker was the obvious solution to this, and the HomePod would have the advantage of being able to act as a HomeKit hub too.

In my HomePod Diary, I’ve been focusing mostly on music, but I’m also happy to report that the smart speaker has also passed the Steph Test …

I’ve used a Synology NAS to store Final Cut Pro X libraries in the past, but the process wasn’t very straightforward at the time, and performance was never good enough to convince me to use it over the long-term. This was especially true as I started to dabble more in 4K workflows.

As we all know, the iMac Pro features built in 10GbE connectivity, which opens up the possibilities when it comes to using a NAS as a Final Cut Pro X storage solution. Final Cut Pro X also received updates in the last year in order to better facilitate working from network attached storage.

Is a 10GbE NAS a viable storage...
