Amazon's online sales dwarf the competition
According to data from e-commerce research firm Internet Retailer, Amazon remains miles ahead of the competition in the online retail space. In 2013, Amazon's online retail sales amounted to US$67.9 billion, more than the next nine largest e-retailers combined. Surprisingly, the second largest player in the e-commerce game is not a large traditional retailer such as Wal-Mart or Staples, but Apple. The iPhone-maker reportedly sold goods and services worth $18.3 billion through its website, the App Store and the iTunes Store in the past year. Amazon's increasingly dominant position in the e-commerce market is owed largely to the company's aggressive growth strategy. Under CEO Jeff Bezos, Amazon has become known to reinvest most of its earnings, which is why the company has yet to turn a meaningful profit. The accompanying chart is courtesy of Statistica.com.

Twitter suffers sell-off as lock-up expires
When a company goes public, early investors and company insiders are usually forbidden to sell their shares for a predetermined amount of time. When this so called lock-up period, usually 90 to 180 days long, expires and trading restrictions are removed, stocks typically fall as early investors are keen to cash in on their investments. The latest company to suffer such a sell-off is Twitter. On Tuesday, the company's lock-up period expired and despite prior claims of major shareholders not to sell, the company's stock price dropped like a rock during Tuesday's trading. At the end of the day, the stock had slipped almost 18% to close at an all-time low of US$31.85. No rule comes without exceptions though: In November 2012, when millions of Facebook shares became eligible for trading, many had expected the stock to take a nose dive after its rocky start to public trading. Domestic vendors are strong in China's smartphone market
The Chinese smartphone market continues to play by its own rules according to data released by the Hong Kong based research firm Counterpoint. While most other smartphone markets are dominated by Samsung and Apple, the Chinese market, while also led by Samsung, is pretty evenly distributed between Samsung, Apple and a handful of domestic vendors. Chinese manufacturers such as Lenovo, Xiaomi and Coolpad are quickly gaining market share with handsets sold at prices that the international competition, Apple in particular, finds hard if not impossible to match. A jury has awarded Apple damages of US$119.65 million for Samsung’s infringement of several of its smartphone patents, reports the IDG News Service (http://tinyurl.com/qdb7cl8). Apple had wanted $2.2 billion in damages for what it alleged was infringement of five of its patents by nine models of Samsung smartphones and a single model of a tablet computer. The jury decided that Samsung infringed two patents (though one had been ruled to infringe earlier) and returned a mixed verdict on another patent. Samsung was also awarded $158,400 in damages from Apple for violating one patent. The company had wanted just over $6 million.

This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.
