Juniper: Apple is the biggest smartwatch seller yet
Juniper Research (www.juniperresearch.com) estimates that Apple sold between 2 and 2.5 million watches this quarter, bringing in approximately US$1 billion in revenue. That makes it the best-selling smartwatch in the market, with over six million sales expected by year-end. "However, despite buyers being satisfied with the device, we continue to see that the product is running out of steam," says Juniper devices analyst James Moar. "We would also expect a decline in sales following launch, especially as the first half of the year draws to a close. This means we are unlikely to see more than seven million Apple Watches sold by the end of 2015, even with a boost to sales over the Christmas period."

Researcher discloses OS X privilege escalation vulnerability
German researcher Stefan Esser from security audit firm SektionEins has disclosed a privilege escalation vulnerability in Mac OS X that's yet to be fixed in the latest release of the operating system, according to ZDNet (http://tinyurl.com/pa6n8h8). He says the security flaw affects OS X 10.10.x and relates to new features added by the iPad and iPhone maker in the newest evolutions of the OS, Yosemite and El Capitan. The new features exploitable by the vulnerability are based upon the dynamic linker dyld and environment variable DYLD_PRINT_TO_FILE, which enables error logging to an arbitrary file. Esser says it's "unclear" whether Apple knows about the security flaw or not, as it has already been patched in the first beta versions of OS X El Capitan 10.11, but not in the current release of OS X 10.10.4 or in the current beta of OS X 10.10.5, which has been released to public beta testers.

Cusby announces 'building block' USB-C ports for the...
Gone are the days owners of the newest MacBook edition have to choose which device they want to connect to using the USB-C thanks to Cusby (www.cusby.com), which has introduced a line of modular and expandable solutions to break free port limitations. The Cusby “building blocks” will be available for pre-order starting at US$25 on Indiegogo (https://goo.gl/qtWLwW) with delivery expected in October 2015. Cusby is modular, meaning you don’t have to commit to a set of ports. Instead, just plug in the appropriate Cusby that serves your current needs. The more devices you need connected, the more building blocks you can add, while always keeping a USB-C port open. For every Cusby connected, a new USB-C port is created. At launch, Cusby will be offering the following three models: ° USB-C Power Port, which offers a USB-C port to connect a power adapter to charge the MacBook; ° USB-A Data Port, which will connect any standard device like a smartphone, tablet, keyboard, mouse, and printer...

Canalys: Apple ships 4.2 million watches
Apple became the world’s leading vendor of wearable bands in the second quarter of 2015, according to Canalys (www.canalys.com) estimates. With 4.2 million shipments, it easily overtook Fitbit, Xiaomi and all the smart watch vendors, despite the Apple Watch’s significantly higher pricing. Apple has done an excellent job designing its WatchKit SDK [software development kit], which it delivered "quickly and comprehensively," says the research group. Native WatchKit extensions provide a capable developer platform without sacrificing battery life. But early sales were hindered due to two factors. Firstly, Apple missed the fourth quarter 2014 holiday season. Secondly, supply constraints stalled shipments for the first couple months after launch. "The Apple Watch is the most sophisticated smart watch to date, and it has proved popular with Apple fans worldwide," says Chris Jones, vice president and principal analyst at Canalys. "But Apple and other vendors still face important challenges...

Add-in board beats PCs in the first quarter
Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry's research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, announced estimated graphics add-in-board (AIB) shipments and suppliers’ market share for the first quarter of 2015. JPR’s AIB Report (www.jonpeddie.com) tracks computer add-in graphics boards, which carry discrete graphics chips. AIBs used in desktop PCs, workstations, servers, and other devices such as scientific instruments. They're sold directly to customers as aftermarket products, or are factory installed. In all cases, AIBs represent the higher end of the graphics industry using discrete chips and private high-speed memory, as compared to the integrated GPUs in CPUs that share slower system memory. The news was encouraging and seasonally understandable, quarter-to-quarter, the AIB market decreased -8.79% (compared to the desktop PC market, which decreased -14.77%), according to JPR. On a year-to-year basis, the research group found that total AIB shipments during the quarter fell...

TrendForce: Samsung topped global smartphone shipments
The latest analysis from the global market research firm TrendForce (www.trendforce.com) finds smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2015 grew 1.9% over the previous quarter to 304 million units. Samsung tops global shipments, while Apple is expected to maintain its high sales record with the next-generation iPhone in the second half of 2015, according to the research group. Shipment growth in the second quarter slowed as vendors prepared to launch their flagship devices in this year's second half. However, shipments of branded Chinese smartphones benefited from the Chinese Labor Day sales and their entries into the overseas markets. TrendForce reports the second quarter shipments of Chinese branded smartphones had an above global average growth of 15.6% with 126M units shipped. TrendForce has also made downward revision to smartphone shipment growth for the entire 2015 from 11.6% to 8.2%. According to Avril Wu, TrendForce's smartphone analyst, this revision is attributed to...
