Western Digital debuts two new G-Speed Shuttle products
Western Digital has introduced two new ultra-transportable solutions in its high-powered G-Technology G-SPEED Shuttle product family. Apple announces Speedometer 2.0 for web browser engineers
Apple's WebKit team has announced Speedometer 2.0. It’s an update of the benchmarking suite designed to allow browser engineers to test their browser engines. WebKit is a layout engine software component for rendering web pages in web browsers. It powers Apple's Safari web browser. In 2014, the WebKit team at Apple released Speedometer 1.0, a benchmark for web app responsiveness. It simulates user interactions in web applications, using TodoMVC to orchestrate adding, completing, and removing todo items. Speedometer repeats these actions using DOM APIs that were extensively used in real-world applications. The performance of these kinds of operations depends on the speed of the JavaScript engine, DOM application programming interfaces, layout, CSS style resolution and other parts of the browser engine. Package Central for Adobe InDesign now supports IDML file...
Zevrix Solutions has announced Package Central 1.11, a feature update to company's file packaging automation solution for Adobe InDesign. The software automatically collects InDesign documents along with their fonts and links from watched hot folders. Package Central can serve unlimited users on a network and offers email notifications, variable folder names, PDF export, and more. Version 1.11 lets users process IDML files that enable backwards compatibility with older InDesign versions. Package Central can be purchased for $149.95 from the Zevrix website (www.zevrix.com). Star Micronics displays Apple Certified AirPrint POS Printer
International POS printer manufacturer Star Micronics (www.Star-EMEA.com) says its upcoming Star TSP654II AirPrint will be the first 80 and 58mm receipt and ticket POS printer on the market to be Apple AirPrint certified. App Tamer for macOS revved to version 2.3.4
St. Clair Software (www.stclairsoft.com) has updated App Tamer, its Mac utility that manages applications to yield more efficient CPU usage, increased battery life and quieter operation. App Tamer's AutoStop capability automatically slows down or pauses applications when you switch away from them, and then restarts them when you click back to them. Version 2.3.4 offers a new option to quit idle applications and improves its control of applications' CPU usage. App Tamer 2.3.4 requires macOS 10.8 or higher. Cocktail 11.2.1 (High Sierra Edition) is ready for macOS 10.13.2
Maintain has served up Cocktail 11.2.1 (High Sierra Edition), a new edition of Cocktail for users running macOS High Sierra. It’s a general purpose utility for macOS that lets users clean, repair and optimize their Macs. The new version adds compatibility with macOS 10.13.2. It also resolves a number of other minor issues discovered in the previous release. Cocktail costs $19 for a single user license and available for purchase from the Maintain website (http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/). Apple releases macOS 11.13.2 Supplemental Update, iOS 11.2.2...
Apple has released macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 and iOS 11.2.2 with, among other things, security fixes for the recently reported Spectre vulnerability. macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 is a free update for all customers who have a compatible machine. The update can be downloaded using the Software Update function in the Mac App Store. iOS 11.2.2 can be downloaded for free on all eligible devices over-the-air in the Settings app. Go to Settings --> General --> Software Update.

CyberByte has released CyberByte Antivirus 2.1.1, an t update to their antivirus and internet security application for Macs. The security app provides protection against threats by scanning for and removing viruses, malware, and adware. Apple’s App Store sees a record-breaking holiday season
Apple has announced that App Store customers around the world made apps and games a bigger part of their holiday season in 2017 than ever before, culminating in $300 million in purchases made on New Year’s Day 2018. During the week starting on Christmas Eve, a record number of customers made purchases or downloaded apps from the App Store, spending over $890 million in that seven-day period. “We are thrilled with the reaction to the new App Store and to see so many customers discovering and enjoying new apps and games,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in a press release. “We want to thank all of the creative app developers who have made these great apps and helped to change people’s lives. Apple waving Developer Program fees for certain groups
Apple has started fee waivers for its Developer Program. Certain eligible groups can avoid paying the $99 per-year fee the tech giant normally requires. Apple says its Developer Program membership is now available at no cost for eligible organizations. Apple to announce its first fiscal quarter of 2018 results on...
Apple will announce the results of its first fiscal quarter of 2018 after markets close on Thursday, Feb. 1. A conference call for investors and the press will bet held at 2 p.m. Pacific. Here’s the guidance the company has provided for the quarter: revenue between $84 billion and $87 billion; gross margin between 38% and 38.5%; operating expenses between $7.65 billion and $7.75 billion; other income/(expense) of $600 million; and a tax rate of 25.5%. The quarter is expected to be the company’s biggest and most profitable quarter ever.

Apple buys Buddybuild
TechCrunch is reporting (https://tinyurl.com/y94vztsg) that Apple has scooped up Buddybuild, a company that “ties together continuous integration, continuous delivery and an iterative feedback solution into a single, seamless platform.” The company’s tech will fold into Apple’s Xcode suite of development tools for the companies various operating systems. Apple to offer $29 replacement iPhone batteries regardless of...
Apple has instructed its retail store employees to offer the $29 replacement batteries to anyone who owns an iPhone 6 or newer, according to Seeking Alpha (https://tinyurl.com/y8al8sdf). The internal instructions follow reports of workers refusing the discount if a phone’s battery passed a diagnostic test.  Apple can still deny the discount if the phone has damage or third-party components that could interfere with the battery.  Those seeking a replacement through an AppleCare warranty claim will need to go through the diagnostic test to see if the phone has less than 80% of its original charge capacity.  Last week Apple has published an apology letter to customers in regards to “Batterygate” for slowing down older phones to compensate for erratic battery performance and announced the battery replacement plan.

Apple has published an apology letter to customers in regards to “Batterygate” for slowing down older phones to compensate for erratic battery performance. The letter starts off this way: “We’ve been hearing feedback from our customers about the way we handle performance for iPhones with older batteries and how we have communicated that process. We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. The Document Foundation has released LibreOffice 5.4.4, an update of the LibreOffice 5.x family for macOS, Windows, Linux and the cloud. The upgrade “over 80 bug and regression fixes.” LibreOffice Online is fundamentally a server service, and should be installed and configured by adding a cloud storage and a SSL certificate. It might be considered an enabling technology for the cloud of ISPs or the private cloud of enterprises and large organizations. LibreOffice users, free software advocates and community members can support The Document Foundation with a donation.

AKVIS Neon for macOS revved to version 3.0
AKVIS (www.akvis.com) has announced Neon 3.0, an update of its Mac software for transforming ordinary photos into neon images. Version 3.0 offers a new Color Variety parameter that adds more colors to photos. In addition, the updated version offers a number of new presets, full compatibility with Photoshop CC 2018, and other improvements. AKVIS Neon allows you to enhance your photos by applying impressive glowing effects and giving them a luminescent look. On the Mac platform, the software runs on macOS 10.7 and higher. The product is available as a standalone application and as a plugin filter for AliveColors, Adobe Photoshop and other image editors. AKVIS Neon, Home license, sells for $39. One license key allows activating and using the software on two computers. The update is free for users who bought Neon in the last 12 months. Users, whose license is older and is not valid for the new version, can get Neon 3.0 for $14.95.

Microsoft NTFS refines support for macOS High Sierra
Paragon Software (www.paragon-software.com) has updated Microsoft NTFS for Mac by Paragon Software, its software utility that grants ultra-fast, transparent read/write access to Windows-formatted NTFS hard drives, SSDs, and thumb drives under macOS. The upgrade delivers improved support for macOS 10.13 High Sierra. macOS High Sierra is designed to be secure by default and includes several architectural changes, including a new file system and user-approved, third-party kernel extensions. Microsoft NTFS for Mac by Paragon Software now provides full support for Secure Kernel Extension Loading, which enables users to install the application and evaluate its benefits without any additional interaction with System Preferences. Ledvance, the maker of Sylvania general lighting in the U.S., has announced what it says is the world’s first HomeKit-enabled smart Filament A19 bulb.  The HomeKit-enabled, $31.99 Sylvania Smart Soft White A19 Filament Bulb “combines the future of the Smart Home with the retro look of the past” and is available for pre order for spring 2018 delivery on Amazon.com.  In addition, the company is announcing the Sylvania Smart Indoor Flex Strip Full Color ($59.99) and Soft White A19 Bulb ($25.99) are now available for purchase on Amazon.com and HomeDepot.com.  The expansion comes after the recent launch of the HomeKit-enabled Sylvania Smart A19 Full Color Bulb, the first light bulb you could buy that can be easily controlled directly using Bluetooth via Siri and Apple’s Home app and doesn’t require buying a separate hub or smart socket, or need a Wi-Fi router to function like other products.
