PCMag: Verizon LTE fastest wireless network nationwide
PCMag.com's annual "Fastest Mobile Networks" test found Verizon Wireless 4G LTE to be the fastest smartphone data network nationwide. AT&T 4G LTE and T-Mobile HSPA+ also won awards in the 30-city test, conducted in May 2011. PCMag.com's drivers covered 30 cities and six rural/suburban regions of the U.S. to test the top five wireless carriers, AT&T, MetroPCS, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless. Using software designed by network testing firm Sensorly, PCMag collected 240,000 lines of data on smartphone downloads, uploads, Internet streaming, and network reliability. "Verizon's 4G LTE network offers the best overall experience across the country," says Sascha Segan, lead analyst for mobile at PCMag.com. "Where it's available, AT&T's network has terrific download speeds, but it's in fewer cities. T-Mobile's HSPA+ is also truly 4G, and offers great value for money." The web site got exclusive access to Sprint's new 4G LTE network, launching later this summer. "Sprint's 4G...

In a note to clients -- as reported by "BGR" (http://macte.ch/t2cCf) -- Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White wrote in a note to clients that Apple is currently on track to record the most profitable year ever among publicly traded companies. ABI: Apple, Samsung gardner 90% of global smartphone profits
Although smartphone shipments grew 41% year-over-year to 144.6 million as of the quarter ending March 2012, many smartphone OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] aren't enjoying the benefits of a rapidly expanding market. Samsung and Apple captured 55% of global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2012 (1Q‘2012) and over 90% of the market’s profits, according to ABI Research. The question remains: can anyone break away to become a strong third in this market? Apple and Samsung together have 50% of global smartphone sales and 90% of global smartphone profits, says ABI Research. Apple sold 36 million smartphones in 1Q'2012, and Samsung sold 43 million. Of the top ten smartphone OEMs, only Samsung and Sony experienced sequential growth in shipments over 4Q’2011. Nokia witnessed a 40% sequential decline in shipments and may soon be passed by ailing RIM in shipments despite the BlackBerry maker’s 20% sequential decline in shipments. "At this point in the year, Nokia will have...

Injunction hearing set in Apple-Motorola patent dispute
A federal judge has scheduled an injunction hearing in a patent dispute between Apple and Motorola Mobility, after raising the possibility last week that the case might be dismissed as neither side had established a right to relief, according to "Computerworld" (http://macte.ch/dih9S). U.S. Circuit Judge Richard Posner said that the hearing would be June 20, and each party may argue for injunctive relief against alleged patent infringement by the other, the article adds. "The parties should be prepared to address the possibility of substitution for an injunction of an equitable decree for a reasonable royalty going forward," the judge said. In November 2010 Apple sued Motorola, alleging that the company's smartphone lineup and the operating software it uses infringe on the iPhone-maker's intellectual property. The two lawsuits came after Motorola sued Apple in October 2010 for patent infringement. Motorola claims that Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and certain Mac computers...

Forrester analysts comment on WWDC developments
At its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced new MacBook Airs and Pros -- including the next-generation model of the latter -- and advances to its operating systems OS X Mountain Lion and iOS 6. The Forrester research group (http://www.forrester.com) has offered some comments on the developers. Analyst Ted Schadler blogs that the announcements were a "developer tour de force," and what is most impressive is the pace of innovation at Apple: These advances to the software come only one year after Apple's last upgrades. As far as the new hardware goes, according to Schadler, "CIOs will wonder even louder about where HP and Dell and Microsoft are with comparable computers." The new features available on iOS 6 will enable the second generation of apps --much like Apple's ecosystem enabled the first -- Forrester analyst Thomas Husson writes. Of particular note is news of Apple's new mapping application. "This is mostly about enabling new product experiences for its own Apple-...

Mediation continues in Apple, Proview battle
The Higher People’s Court of Guangzhou has started hearing the appeal by Apple on Feb. 29 after a Chinese lower court ruled in favor of the debt-ridden Chinese tech company Proview Technology (Shenzhen) which claimed the ownership of the "iPad" trademark in China, reports "ZDNet" (http://macte.ch/z0y7Z). Despite that a ruling on an appeal case would normally be issued within three months in China, Zhao Le, a spokesman at the court’s foreign affairs office, told the publication that it won't make a judgment as long as both parties continue talking. Roger Xie, a Proview’s lawyer, also confirmed that “the mediation will continue”, and “there is no specific deadline.” Proview says it owns the rights to the "iPad" name in China; Apple, as you might expect, disagrees. In February Proview filed a lawsuit in Santa Clara County (California) that brought the legal dispute to Silicon Valley. With that move, the brouhaha went international.

Smartphone, tablet demand to remain red hot through 2017
Ever since the introduction of Apples' first iPhone in 2007, US and global market demand for smartphones has grown at a tremendous pace, with demand for mobile data following right behind. HTC withdraws appeal against ITC dismissal of its Apple...
"FOSS Patents (http://macte.ch/OpN3B) reports that HTC has withdrawn its Federal Circuit appeal against the ITC (International Trade Commission) dismissal of its complaint against Apple. Four months ago, the ITC dismissed a complaint HTC had brought against Apple in May 2010. The original complaint related to five patents. HTC withdrew one, and the ITC didn't hold Apple to infringe any of the asserted claims from the four remaining ones. HTC almost immediately appealed the ITC ruling to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC), but it apparently concluded that this wasn't worth pursuing, notes "FOSS Patents." In 2010 Apple filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone's user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware.

Apple must defend against location tracking lawsuit
"Reuters" (http://macte.ch/uuHEt) reports that a federal judge has ruled that Apple must defend against a lawsuit accusing it of letting advertisers secretly track the activity of millions of mobile device users; however, Googleand several other defendants were dismissed from the case. Owners of iPhones, iPads and iPod touches may pursue claims against Apple under two California consumer protection laws, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, said in a decision late Tuesday. Koh oversees nationwide litigation combining 19 lawsuits. However, the judge threw out claims that Apple violated customers' privacy rights. He also threw out claims under federal laws addressing computer fraud, wiretaps, and records disclosure, notes "Reuters." Judge: Apple can sue even if Kodak sells patents
Eastman Kodak has failed to persuade a judge to rule that Apple has no interest in a group of patents Kodak is putting up for sale as part of its bankruptcy reorganization, reports "Bloomberg" (http://macte.ch/OVmWA). U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Allan Gropper in Manhattan said the dispute could be resolved through a lawsuit in Kodak’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy case. "An adversary proceeding will permit the parties to raise issues in an orderly and expeditious fashion and preserve all of their just rights,” he said on Wednesday. Kodak wants to sell the patent assets; the company said in court papers that it needed the order to aid in the sale. Apple has claimed ownership of the patents and is trying to “delay and derail” the sale effort, Kodak said. Apple sued Kodak in April 2010, about three months after Kodak accused Apple and Research In Motion of infringing a patent related to ways of previewing images. Apple's countersuit said Kodak devices copy the technology that it uses in Macs, iPhone,...

Games, infotainment to drive mobile entertainment revenues
A new report from Juniper Research (http://www.juniperresearch.com) has found that strong growth among games and infotainment applications, in part fostered by a burgeoning consumer tablet market, will push mobile entertainment revenues to more than US$65 billion annually by 2016, up from $36 billion last year. The report, "Mobile Entertainment Strategies: Business Models & Forecasts 2012-2016," notes that while the transition to an app-store centric ecosystem had dramatically increased consumer adoption of casual games, it had also resulted in the development of a far greater variety of content for mobile devices. So revenues across a spectrum of infotainment services -- most notably leisure and lifestyle applications -- have already experienced dramatic growth, according to Juniper Research. However, the report observed that while overall entertainment revenues would continue to increase steadily, some sectors would fare less well. It highlighted the music sector as a case in...

RE:Vision Effects releases Twixtor Pro for Final Cut Pro X
RE:Vision Effects (http://www.revisionfx.com) has released Twixtor Pro for Apple's Final Cut Pro X. It allows you to create slow motion shots. Twixtor synthesizes new frames by warping and interpolating frames of the original sequence, employing RE:Vision's proprietary tracking technology that calculates motion for each individual pixel. According to says Pete Litwinowicz, president of RE:Vision Effects, Twixtor Pro adds the following features to Twixtor regular: ° It allows mattes to be used to disambiguate the motion of multiple objects, specifying up to three foreground layers. ° It uses up to 12 hand-animated points to help guide Twixtor Pro's motion estimation. By using the tracking points, users can explicitly tell Twixtor where a pixel moves from one frame to the next in order to guide Twixtor Pro's calculation of motion vectors.  Twixtor Pro version 5.3 is supported within Final Cut Pro (FCP) X 10.0.4 and up. Twixtor regular continues to be support for FCP X, but now also...

Apple's bid to ban US sales of Galaxy S III put on hold
Apple's effort to ban the sale of the Samsung Galaxy S III in the U.S. has been put on hold. U.S. District Court judge Lucy Koh has decided that Apple can't argue its case for a ban on the flagship handset at a previously scheduled June 21 hearing, reports "CNET." Instead, Apple must file a motion for the ban that includes a request for a hearing date held sometime after June 21. Koh says the issue is that there are already quite a few issues to consider at the June 21 hearing. Read more at http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57452190-37/apples-galaxy-s-iii-ban-bi... . 'iFixIt' tears down new Retina display MacBook Pro
The gang at "iFixIt" has torn down the just-released Retina display MacBook Pro and found some good and bad things about it. Here's their summary: "The new MacBook Pro with Retina Display is stunning. 0.71-inch thick, super-fast processor, and 95 watt hours of battery life. It crams 5.1 million pixels -- that's one pixel for every resident of Singapore -- into a 15.4" screen. "But even though it packs lots of gee-whiz bells and whistles, we were thoroughly disappointed when we ventured inside. This is, to date, the least repairable laptop we've taken apart. Apple has packed all the things we hate into one beautiful little package. " Just like in the iPhone 4/4S (and the MacBook Air), proprietary Pentalobe screws prevent folks from accessing the machine's internals. That means you need a special screwdriver just to remove the bottom cover. "As in the MacBook Air, the RAM is soldered to the logic board. Max out at 16GB now, or forever hold your peace -- you can't upgrade. "The...
