A few years back, Apple switched the Mac platform from PowerPC to Intel processors. This introduced some interesting opportunities for the Mac, including the ability to run operating systems other than Mac OS X on a Mac. This includes not only your everyday Windows XP, but also other Windows OSes, including 64-bit versions, and a wide variety of Linux and other OSes.

MacTech's goal was to see how well Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion perform compared head-to-head in their most recent versions.
The very large suite of over 3500 tests was performed comparing the MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro. The purpose of the testing and the article are to answer the questions about performance for the different virtualization solutions available, as well as the differences between Windows XP and Windows 7 in virtual machines, as well as multiple processors and 64-bit vs. 32-bit.

revamped version of its most popular iPhone development training
course that will include coverage of Apple's new iPad.
While the version of the iPhone SDK required for iPad development
(3.2 beta) is currently under a non-disclosure agreement, Apple has
indicated that the agreement will no longer be in force when the iPad
ships, which, according to Apple, will be in late March. About

AppProtect is a new product in Excel Software's extensive line of
software and document protection and license management tools for Mac
OS X and Windows computers. It can be used standalone or in
conjunction with the Safe Activation or WebActivation web server for
automated license activation.
A software vendor opens the AppProtect window, selects the desired
options and clicks a button to generate a protected application. The
vendor's application is wrapped with an activation process that
presents a dialog to the customer on first launch. Once activated,
the software will run on that computer without user interaction, but

QuickerTek releases nCard for MacBooks, MacBook Pr
QuickerTek has released the US$89.95 nCard
(http://www.quickertek.com/products/nCard_2010.php) for use with a
MacBook, MacBook Pro or Mac mini with any wireless network. The
company says that users of the new nCard can expect wireless speeds
"that are the absolute fastest the wireless network can manage."
To boost performance even further, this card can be upgraded with an
external antenna. That means even more distance from the wireless
access point. The nCard offers compatibility with all Apple AirPort
Base Stations, as well as Linksys, Belkin and virtually all other
wireless network hardware, including the "draft N" equipment.

ProSecure, the specialized network security brand by NetGear, has
unveiled the ProSecure UTM5, a gateway security appliance designed to
extend enterprise-class Unified Threat Management (UTM) technology to
any small business, home networks for telecommuters, and small branch
offices around five users in size.
Distributed via NetGear's channel partner program, the ProSecure UTM5
appliances come with simple subscription options without any per-user
licensing. The UTM5 enables small companies to protect themselves
using an array of defenses including firewall, SSL and IPSec VPN, URL
filtering, network antivirus, and antispam, but in a very small,
easy-to-use form factor and with a corresponding price point,
according to Jason Leung, NetGear's senior product line manager for

2X unites application, desktop virtualization with thin client...
2X Software has released version 8 of its 2X ApplicationServer and 2X
VirtualDesktopServer products. The new version not only includes the
ability to publish applications and virtual desktops, but also allows
the management of user thin client configurations from within the
application console.
This creates an all-in-one application for remote publishing and
device management, according to Nikolaos Makris, CEO of 2X Software.
The new release will further reduce IT administration hassles, by
allowing centralized control of both device groups and published
resources, he adds.
2X VirtualDesktopServer v. 8 publishes any Windows application or
virtual desktop to remote devices, including thin clients and Mac,
Windows and Linux systems, without the need to install applications

Scosche announces KickBack stand and case for iPad
Scosche (http://www.scosche.com) has announced the KickBack, its
first accessory for the iPad. Pricing hasn't been announced, but it
will ship in early to mid-spring.
The shatterproof polycarbonate and rubber hybrid provides protection
for the Apple device. The case's patent pending locking kickstand
enables both vertical and horizontal viewing and has a low angle
setting for an optimal typing position. Scosche also included molded
grips on the back of the KickBack for more secure handling.
Like all of Scosche's KickBack cases, the iPad version ships with a
screen protector and cleaning cloth. It's the first of an entire

To no one's great surprise, Apple unveiled a new product at a special
event in San Francisco today: the iPad. Yep, that's the name Apple is
going with, not the rumored iTablet or iSlate monikers.
Apple says the device is for browsing the web, reading and sending
email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing
games, reading e-books and much more. iPad's Multi-Touch display lets
users physically interact with applications and content.
The iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds --
thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook, according to Apple

Apple has announced financial results for its fiscal 2010 first
quarter that ended Dec. 26, 2009.
The company posted revenue of US$15.68 billion and a net quarterly
profit of $3.38 billion, or $3.67 per diluted share. These results
compare to revenue of $11.88 billion and net quarterly profit of
$2.26 billion, or $2.50 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter.
Gross margin was 40.9 percent, up from 37.9 percent in the year-ago
quarter. International sales accounted for 58 percent of the
quarter's revenue.
Apple sold 3.36 million Macs during the quarter, representing a 33%
unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The company sold 8.7 million
iPhones in the quarter, representing 100% unit growth over the
year-ago quarter. Apple sold 21 million iPods during the quarter,

PlusTek expands OpticFilm scanner line

These scanners are designed to take 35mm film and slides and convert

have announced The Bridge at NAMM 2010 in Anaheim, California. The
Bridge spans the gap between music production and DJing, creating a l
link between Ableton Live and Serato Scratch Live/ITCH.
The Bridge provides Ableton Transport Control (ATC), giving DJs
turntable-style control of their own multitrack productions. DJs can
drag an Ableton Live Set onto one of the decks in Scratch Live or
ITCH and use their turntables, CDJ or ITCH controller to control the
transport.
Also, The Bridge provides a mixtape creation tool. DJs can perform
mixes in Serato Scratch Live or ITCH and save them as an Ableton Live
Set. This way, the DJ can still perform the mix, but also has
detailed editing options.

Boss unveils ME-25 guitar effects, TU-3 chromatic tuner

The ME-25 guitar effects package sports a built-in sound library that
gives instant access to dozens of classic and modern effects. Users
choose a category, select a variation and play. You can customize

has COSM amp models onboard, plus Super Stack and Phrase Loop.
The tuner, the Boss TU-2, evolves and improves with the debut of the
new TU-3. Housed in a Boss stompbox body, the TU-3 features a

The QSP-8229 monitors up to four video inputs combined into a single

Cakewalk introduces new products at NAMM

this week's NAMM show.
Cakewalk introduced the new A-PRO Series, USB MIDI Controllers for
Mac and PC. The A-300 Pro (32-key), A-500 Pro (49-key) and A-800 Pro
(61-key) are keyboard controllers developed in conjunction with
Roland.
Cakewalk also introduced the FA-66, a compact and portable 6-in/6-out
FireWire 400/800 audio interface designed for mobile recording and
performance professionals. This unit has two XLR/TRS combo inputs
with phantom powered mic preamps, with one offering Hi-Z for
recording electric guitar or bass, plus two RCA inputs -- all with
