Fission 2.4 brings revamped support for creating custom...
Rogue Amoeba has updated Fission (https://rogueamoeba.com/fission/), its macOS audio editor. Version 2.4 brings revamped support for creating custom ringtones for use on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. iTunes 12.7 removed several features, including support for managing and syncing custom tones. This feature removal broke functionality in several current apps, including Apple's own GarageBand app, as well as older versions of Fission. However, with Fission 2.4, users can once again save custom tones for use on iOS devices. Fission runs on macOS and higher, with a free fully-functional trial available for download. While in trial mode, the quality of saved files is intentionally degraded via a series of fades in the audio. The unrestricted full version can be purchased for $29.

Apple has released a golden master (GM) candidate of macOS High Sierra to developers and public beta testers A golden master is a final version of software ready for release to manufacturing. The macOS High Sierra GM can be downloaded from the Apple Developer Center or over-the-air using the Software Update mechanism in the Mac App Store for those in Apple’s Public Beta Testing Program. The finished version of the operating system update is due Tuesday, September 20. macOS High Sierra will run on all machines that are compatible with macOS Sierra.

DHS tells all federal agencies to shutter user of Kaspersky Lab...
The US Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a binding operational directive to all federal agencies, ordering them to shutter use of Kaspersky software within 90 days over concerns with the Russian-based company's ties to the Kremlin, reports “ZDNet” (http://tinyurl.com/ya5eulbk). Kaspersky Lab is a Russian multinational cybersecurity and anti-virus provider headquartered in Moscow, Russia, and operated by a holding company in the United Kingdom. It ranks fourth in the global ranking of antivirus vendors by revenue. The company has became the subject of controversy in the United States, over allegations that it has engaged with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), in the wake of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. DHS is giving federal agencies 30 days to identify Kaspersky Lab products on their networks and to remove and discontinue present and future use of the products in the next 60 days. Mellel word processor for macOS revved to version 4.0
Mellel has released Mellel 4.0, an upgrade of its word processor for the Mac. The new version includes over 200 new and improved features, is built from the ground up and designed “to save writers both time and frustration associated with traditional word processors.” The folks at Mellel say version 4.0 aims to replace Microsoft Word as the preferred word processor of writers who use Macs. Apple releases iTunes 12.7 for macOS
Apple has updated iTunes for macOS to version 12.7, removing the App Store items for purchasing iOS apps. It can be downloaded at the Mac App Store for free. After you install the update, a popup window says “the new iTunes places emphasis on music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and audiobooks.” Apple notes that, if you previously used iTunes to sync apps or ringtones to your iOS device, use the new App Store or Sounds Settings on iOS to re-download them without your Mac. Recent events such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma remind us of all kinds of recovery – but often, news doesn’t talk about support related to IT. Apple posts new developer, public betas of iOS 11
Apple has released the 10th developer beta and ninth public beta of iOS 11. Developers can download the beta through the Apple Developer Center or the Software Update mechanism in the App Store. End users can download the public beta. If you're not already signed up for the public beta program, you can do so at https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/. The public beta program is free, but remember: beta software is unfinished software so use with care.

LandingZone unveils a new docking station for the MacBook Pro...
LandingZone (www.landingzone.net) has announced its latest docking station for the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. It’s equipped with 16 ports and costs $299. Available for the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, the LandingZone Docking Station's compact size brings the functionality of a full desktop computer, with the ability to stay at a desk or be brought on-the-go during travel, says LandingZone CEO Steven Yang. The additional ports, such as USB 3.1 Type-C, USB 3.1 Type-A, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort and Ethernet, facilitate the connection of a large range of devices to the Apple laptop. The docking station eliminates the need for numerous dongles, as the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar offers only USB-C ports. In addition, the Kensington Security Slot built into the dock allows both the docking station and the MacBook Pro to be secured to a desk or table.

Pixelmator Pro for the Mac coming this fall

JixiPix releases new Watercolor Studio app for the Mac
JixiPix Software has introduced Watercolor Studio, an automatic photo-to-watercolor artistic app for the Mac and Windows. It renders any ordinary photo into a watercolor painting. You can customize paintings using an array of sliders, layers, brushes, color washes and artistic finishes. Watercolor Studio uses artificial intelligence and image recognition to render the initial watercolor, then gives you the ability to create variations quickly and easily, according to the folks at JixiPix Software. You can change paintings into an ink wash, add an artistic finish, brush in details, and even spatter it with liquid spots. Watercolor Studio requires macOS 10.7 or higher. Maintain serves up Cocktail 10.4.3 (Sierra Edition)
Maintain has served up Cocktail 10.4.3 (Sierra Edition), the latest maintenance update for users running macOS Sierra. Cocktail is a general purpose utility for macOS that lets users clean, repair and optimize their Macs. Version 10.4.3 adds the ability to easily add menu extras (menulets) to the macOS menu bar. It also fixes compatibility issues with Little Snitch 4 and addresses an issue in which Cocktail may fail to disable virtual memory swapping.
