Analyst gives reasons why Apple shares will hit $1,000
In a note to clients -- as noted by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster tells why he thinks Apple shares will hit US$1.000 in the next couple of years. Among those reasons: ° Continued innovation in the company's 2012 product roadmap; ° A blowout next-generation iPhone launch; ° An Apple television arriving in 2013 (the rumored "iTV");; ° Little change to carrier subsidies for the next two to three years; ° Sustained gross margins above 40% and the China opportunity. ° Meaningful updates to the Mac line.
Regarding the latter, Munster thinks Mac updates should arrive within the next six weeks with enhanced Retina Displays and Intel's Ivy Bridge chips. Since it's Apple's "first meaningful Mac update in over a year," the analyst expects the refresh to "reaccelerate" Mac sales.

IDC: iOS, Android smartphones expand market share
Smartphones powered by the iOS and Android operating systems accounted for more than eight out of ten smartphones shipped in the first quarter of 2012 (1Q12). According to the "International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker," the mobile operating systems held shares of 59% and 23% respectively of the 152.3 million smartphones shipped in 1Q12. During the first quarter of 2011, the two operating systems held a combined share of 54.4%. The share gains mean that Android and iOS have successfully distanced themselves from previous market leaders Symbian and BlackBerry, as well as Linux and Windows Phone 7/Windows Mobile. "The popularity of Android and iOS stems from a combination of factors that the competition has struggled to keep up with," says Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Phone Technology and Trends program. "Neither Android nor iOS were the first to market with some of these features, but the way they made the smartphone...

Also, it may or may not be coincidental that the iOS apps Google Search, Opera Mini, and Mercury Web Browser were all updated today. Google Search 2.0.0 is touted by Google as a "complete redesign."  It makes one wonder if they were holding onto it until the day Yahoo! would announce Axis.

Apple: we didn't conspire to fix ebook pricing
Apple is rejecting charges that it conspired to fix prices of electronic books, calling the U.S. government's antitrust lawsuit a "fundamentally flawed" endeavor that could discourage competition and harm consumers, reports "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/NAzQq). In a filing in U.S. District Court in Manhattan Tuesday, Apple said it didn't conspire with anyone or fix prices for e-books to thwart Amazon's dominance of that market, the article adds. In fact, the company says its entry into the book market has actually fueled demand for ebooks by forcing Amazon and rivals, including Barnes & Noble Inc, to compete more aggressively, including by upgrading e-reader technology. In April the United States Department of Justice filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, Hachette SA, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin and Simon & Schuster in New York district court, claiming collusion over ebook pricing. Apple and Macmillan, which have refused to engage in settlement talks with the Justice...

Brands including Mac|Life, Total Film, Fast Car, T3 and many of Future's games and music titles have all found large international audiences through their exposure to tablets like Apple's iPad, she adds. Overall, 33% of revenues through the Newsstand have come from the domestic U.S. market, with 25% coming from the U.K. and the other 42% coming from countries as diverse as China, Korea, Germany and France. Apple, Samsung reach no agreement at meeting of execs
A two-day meeting between chief executives of Samsung and Apple yielded no agreement between the parties mired in a global battle regarding alleged patent infringements, reports "The Korea Times" (http://macte.ch/pwfaq). Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung and Shin Jong-kyun, head of the firm’s mobile division, left Seoul Sunday for the United States to meet Apple CEO Tim Cook by order of the Northern District Court of California. This was an attempt -- and, apparently, a futile one -- to settle the patent fight without going into costly legal proceedings. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, ordered the company execs to meet face-to-face to try and settle their differences. Apple sued for 'deceptive' practices regarding iCloud
Another day, another lawsuit. A complaint was filed this week in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California by plaintiff Danyelle Comer accusing Apple of participating in "unfair, unlawful, deceptive, and misleading practices" in promoting the simplicity and reliability of its iCloud service, reports "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com). The lawsuit claims that Apple "misrepresented" its iCloud service in advertising it to customers. Specifically, it argues that paying MobileMe customers experienced "devastating consequences," and that Apple should have been better prepared for the transition, notes "AppleInsider." The lawsuit blasts iCloud occasional downtime, which means users can get their e-mail and other services. It accuses Apple of indicating that iCloud and MobileMe e-mail accounts are online and operational, when in fact users are unable to send or receive e-mails, says "AppleInsider."

'iTV' could double annual household spending on Apple...
In a note to clients -- as reported by "AppleInsider" (http://www.appleinsider.com) -- Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty says if were to launch a full-fledged television set (the rumored "iTV"), it could cause total average annual U.S. household spending on Apple products to double to US$888 by 2015. She said that Apple's U.S. household spending doubled following the launch of the original iPhone, from $150 per year in 2007 to $295 in 2010. She expects that the iPad will double that spending again, to an average of $635 per household, per year by 2013. "Given a 97% TV household penetration and a 61% broadband household penetration in the US along with an expected high price (and value) point, an Apple TV is likely to generate a similar increase in average household spend, with some help from iPad and iPhone growth," Huberty wrote.

RIM, Motorola update nano-SIM proposal
"The Verge" (http://macte.ch/kIDd4) reports that RIM and Motorola have submitted an updated proposal for the design of the so-called 4FF nano-SIM, a smaller replacement for the 3FF micro-SIM used in many phones. Debate between competing nano-SIM designs -- one from Apple, another from a joint group of RIM, Motorola, and Nokia -- has grown intense over the past several months within the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), the body ultimately responsible for SIM standardization worldwide, the article adds. Apple is competing with Motorola Mobility, Research in Motion and Nokia on a smaller SIM card standard. Apple wants a "nano-SIM" that would let it design even smaller products. The MicroSIM card, with a design smaller than traditional SIM cards, was pushed by Apple in 2010 with the launch of the iPhone 4. However, a nano-SIM would shrink further -- to about a third the size of the MicroSIM. Apple's keen on adopting the new standard, but the other companies aren't...

Screenwriter: Job's movie wont' be straightforward...
Aaron Sorkin -- who has been hired to write a screenplay based on Walter Issacson's best-selling "Steve Jobs" biography -- hasn't yet figured out how to put the life of the Apple co-founder on the silver screen, but he's certain it's not going to be a straightforward biography, notes "Reuters" (http://macte.ch/D0QYQ). Sorkin, who won an Oscar for his screenplay of Facebook film "The Social Network," says he'll be looking for an element of tension or an obstacle in Job's life on which to hang the movie, the article adds. He also said that Apple co-founder Steve "Woz" Wozniak has been hired by the film studio as a "tutor" on all the technical aspects of computers and on Jobs himself. The movie project is being produced by Mark Gordon, Scott Rudin and Guymon Casady. Published late last year, "Steve Jobs" was Amazon’s best-selling book of 2011. In addition, the biography ranked #1 among bestselling hardcover books by a 2:1 margin, with sales of 2,246,569 in 2011, according to "Publisher’s...

Kodak: Apple is trying to devalue our patents
Kodak says Apple is trying to devalue the worth of its patents so that it can buy them for less than their worth (which the company estimates at US$2.6 billion), reports "Total Telecom" (http://macte.ch/uwlqc). Kodak says it plans to seek approval of its patent auction timeline "in the near future." The company is asking the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan to pave the way for that sale by ruling that Apple has no interest in 10 specific patents among those Kodak is looking to sell, notes "Total Telecom." Apple sued Kodak in April 2010, about three months after Kodak accused Apple and Research In Motion of infringing a patent related to ways of previewing images. Apple's countersuit said Kodak devices copy the technology that it uses in Macs, iPhone, iTunes and Photo Booth involving image processing, energy management and memory design.
