WEBTEN UPDATE FEATURES DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENTS IN PERFORMANCE AND
Santa Barbara, CA, March 31. Tenon Intersystems today announced
WebTen 2.1.10, a free upgrade to its industrial-strength,
high-performance Apache-based Web server for Mac OS Power Macs. The
new WebTen features improved robustness, improved performance, and
improved WebSTAR-plug-in compatibility.
WebTen policy changes in handling WebSTAR-style plug-ins have
resulted in improved memory utilization and improved plug-in
operation. Because many WebSTAR-style plug-ins are ill-equipped for
dynamic unloading and loading, WebTen now no longer reloads W*API
plug-ins during WebTen re-configurations. In addition, a memory
corruption problem caused by W*API plug-ins that use the Mac OS
thread manger, such as Lasso and WebCatalog, has been corrected. The
update has been received with enthusiasm by WebTen beta testers.
Robert Minor, Director of Internet Services at CyberMill
Communications, said, "WebTen 2.1.10 is fantastic. We have several
high-traffic websites with and without SSL running the WebCatalog
plug-in and I haven't had to restart since I installed it."
Jeff Malloy, President of WebTech, said, "My tests with WebTen 2.1.10
show a great reduction in latency for Ch-ching! In some cases, the
latency for Ch-ching! was cut in half. With additional Ch-ching!
eCommerce sites under development, we are pleased to see Ch-ching!
and WebTen performing even better together."
WebTen 2.1.10 supports the new Verisign two-tier SSL server
certificates which will be required in January, 2000. WebTen's
built-in DNS server has been enhanced to support more kinds of DNS
records. DNS A records and NS records are now fully managed via
WebTen's point and click Administration Server. Plug-ins for
Sophisticated Circuits' PowerKey Pro and Rebound! are now included
with the distribution and the new package is pre-configured to
support Purity's WebSentinel virtual realms.
WebTen incorporates the highly-acclaimed Apache web server software
developed by the Apache Group. Apache is well-known as stable,
full-strength, feature-rich web server software used on almost two
million web sites worldwide and recently included by Apple with Mac
OS X Server. Tenon has taken this mature, integrated, scalable
software and extended it with performance enhancements, security, and
Macintosh-specific features to make a unique Apache for the Macintosh
platform. Tenon's Apache extensions are also available for Mac OS X
WebTen 2.1.10 extends the open source Apache with a point & click
interface, internet object caching, SSL 3.0 (for supporting eCommerce
with multiple secure certificates on a single machine), FTP (for
uploading web content on a virtual host by virtual host basis), NFS
(for offloading content), a state-of-the art DNS, a high-performance
search engine, and advanced proxy services. Tenon's Macintosh-based
Apache is running in a pre-emptive multitasking environment and is
able to sustain over 1000 hits/second.
