Network Associates Announces Road Map for the Future of Macintosh Virus
Security

Outlines Plans of Continued Development of Virex, Anti-Virus Solutions for
the Macintosh Operating System

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 14 — Network Associates (Nasdaq: NETA) today
announced its plans for continued development of Virex, the technology
leader in Macintosh virus protection. Virex version 5.9, planned for
release next month, is the result of the Company’s continued emphasis on
the Virex development process, which began prior to Network Associates’
acquisition of Dr Solomon’s in June of this year. Virex 5.9 will provide
Macintosh users with a new scanning engine which will improve speed and
ease-of-use.

“Virex development is in full swing! We are very excited about the upcoming
release which promises to be the strongest and most stable release yet,”
said Ryan McGee, Virex product manager for Network Associates. “We will
combine the technical expertise of both Dr. Solomon’s and Network
Associates to provide customers with the most comprehensive anti-virus
solution available for the Macintosh.”

Virex is the first choice in anti-virus software among Macintosh users with
features including:

* Protection from macro viruses;

* Automatic scanning of files downloaded from the Internet;

* Patented SpeedScan technology;

* Scan-At-Download, scheduled and on-demand scanning technology;

* Compressed file scanning.

“Along with its bread-and-butter anti-virus features, Virex sports an
impressive level of integration with Mac-specific technologies — including
contextual menus, the Control Strip, and drag and drop — and this lets you
quickly scan volumes, files, and folders,” stated Macworld in its May 1998
review of virus protection software.

The Virex 5.9 release will include an updated scanning engine featuring
brand new technology, developed by Dr Solomon’s, to improve the ease and
speed of updating. Because Virex 5.9 features a new engine, it will not be
compatible with Virex 5.8.1 or earlier versions of Virex. Users of earlier
versions will need to upgrade to 5.9 to receive the latest in anti-virus
protection. Virex 5.8.x users will be entitled to one free upgrade to Virex
5.9.

The product roadmap details Network Associates’ plans to enhance the
updating features of Virex with the launch of version 6.0 later this year.
Network Associates’ SecureCast technology, which offers both push and pull
methods of obtaining updates, will be integrated into the product so users
can download virus definition updates with greater flexibility.
