FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MACh Velocity 66 G4 MPe ships!
XLR8 Dual G4 MV66 ships with rave reviews from beta testers.

Atlanta, GA, USA. March 22nd 2001: XLR8, the leading manufacturer of
Macintosh upgrade and expansion products, is pleased to announce the
shipping of latest addition to its award-winning range of Power PC G4
upgrade cards: The MACh Velocity 66 G4 MPe.

Available Now, the MACh Velocity 66 G4 MPe (the 66 refers to the bus
speed of the beige systems) offers XLR8 customers a solution that
turns a standard Apple beige G3 PowerMac into a dual G4
multiprocessing powerhouse. The MACh Velocity 66 G4 MPe continues
XLR8’s commitment to address their primary customer base in
pre-press, graphics and design, and offer them yet more ways to use
its modular technology. Using the ZIF (zero insertion force) socket
and now for the first time the similar LIF (low insertion force)
socket, the architecture of the MACh Velocity 66 G4 MPe card means
that XLR8 customers can, at a later date, upgrade one or both of the
MACh Speed G4 MPe ZIFs that are shipped on the card. Although shipped
as matching pairs, the processors have no need to be balanced, i.e.,
it is possible to have a 500Mhz processor and a 733 Mhz processor
running on the card. The only requirement is that the processor
daughter cards be MPe enabled. Currently, MPe enabled ZIF processors
are only available from XLR8.

The ability to run different speed processors on MACh Velocity 66 G4
MPe makes it future proof. When the user wants to increase the power
of the system at a later date they need only to change one of the
processors, and not the whole upgrade. The removed “old” G4 ZIF can
then be used in any other ZIF-based system to increase its
performance, or with the new MACh Carrier MPe in any 7300 – 9600
class machine or clone.

For maximum performance, the XLR8 MACh Speed G4 MPe ZIF and the MACh
Velocity 66 G4 MPe card all support the full MESI cache state
identifiers (for more information on multiprocessing and cache
coherency refer to our Multiprocessing Performance White Paper at
www.xlr8.com/News/index.html).

The beta testers just love the simplicity, speed and productivity gains

“We had no idea you could upgrade these older machines and have been
holding off ordering new ones because of the time it takes to
configure them and have all the software installed,” said John Hart
of Maund & Irving printers, Tring. “It took just 10 minutes to
install and configure the MACh Velocity and it is running
beautifully. We have seen a 4x performance gain over an identical
machine, and our productivity is up by 2x. Maund & Irving will
definitely be buying more upgrades from XLR8 over the next few weeks”

“The MACh Velocity 66 G4 MPe solution has exceeded our highest
expectations in all of our tests” says Chris Cooksey, Director of
Engineering at XLR8. “The MACh Velocity G4 card has produced as high
as 1.92x the equivalent single processor speeds – even under Mac OS
9.1. As more applications are carbonised the greater the performance
gains will be, even before Mac OS X is released.”

The XLR8 MACh Velocity 66 G4 MPe will support Mac OSX and future
revisions of the MacOS whilst Apple supports the base platform. The
MacOSX XLR8 MACh Control Panel will be released to the public shortly
after OSX goes on sale (the new driver is required to run the second
processor under MacOSX).

The new XLR8 MACh Velocity 66 G4 MPe with dual G4 500’s was recently
demonstrated to the public for the first time at MacWorld Tokyo in a
standard beige Apple 266 G3 desktop.
