BI software market to exceed $40 billion by 2018

According to TBR’s "2Q13 Business Intelligence Software Vendor Benchmark," the business intelligence (BI) software market will surpass US$40 billion by 2018 as vendors expand and integrate portfolios to capitalize on customers’ BI software investment plans.

TBR research shows customers’ BI software consumption patterns are maturing and broadening, with customers moving from stand-alone tools to packaged BI applications and then to analytic complements of business applications. TBR market sizing projects an average 4% year-to-year annual revenue growth between 2013 and 2018 -- a slowdown from the double-digit growth rates of 2011 and 2012 that reflects the rising maturity of this market and the extent to which customers can extend BI software deployments.

iPhone 5 not expected to have much effect in emerging...

The recently launched iPhone 5c is not expected to have an effect on overall smartphone adoption rate in emerging markets, while Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia provides a reason for cautious optimism, according to a new research note by Pyramid Research (www.pyramidresearch.com).

Emerging markets will be the driving force behind the global smartphone sales growth, with 70% of total smartphone sales originating in this part of the world in 2018. Projections provided in the Pyramid Point assume that the global smartphone average selling price will gradually decline and that this number will be below US$100 across the poorest countries in the emerging world.

Many companies face challenges moving to new revenue...

A new Gatepoint Research study (http://tinyurl.com/kllawxg), commissioned by cloud billing expert Aria Systems and released today, finds that a significant percentage (42%) of respondents from the high tech, telecom, and retail sectors are experiencing frustration with their current billing systems when trying to use them to support new recurring revenue models. Often at the heart of the problem are legacy billing systems that limit a business’s ability to adapt quickly and flexibly to changes in their marketplace.

According to the Gatepoint study, 33% of respondents report being “barely or less than satisfied” with their current billing system. Fifty-one percent of U.S. population watches streaming...

Call it a tipping point -- more than half (51%) of the U.S. population (ages 13 to 54) now watches TV programs or movies using streaming video at least once a week. Connected TVs, mobile devices, videogame consoles, and streaming services such as Netflix have helped turn a “tecchie” phenomenon into a mainstream entertainment source.

According to a just-released GfK report, "How People Use Media: Over-the-Top TV 2013," the weekly streaming audience for TV and movies in the US has risen from 37% three years ago to 48% in 2012, and edged over the halfway point in the past year.

Worldwide semiconductor market to grow 3% in 2013

The worldwide semiconductor market is expected to grow 3% from 2012 to 2013, according to ABI Research (www.abirsearch.com). There has been sequential market growth from 1Q13 to 2Q13 and the vast majority of the top 20 vendors are expecting 3Q13 to grow revenues again.

"It has been a tough few years for the semiconductor industry. While we haven’t seen a dramatic decline in overall revenues since the 2008/2009 period the market has been pretty stagnant since 2010," says Peter Cooney, practice director, ABI Research. Smartphone-based fitness users to approach 100 million...

The next five years will see a major shift towards smartphone- based mHealth, where hardware attachments link to companion app on the smartphone, according to a new report from Juniper Research (www.juniperresearch.com).

The report forecasts that by 2018 there will be 96 million users of app-enabled mHealth and mobile-fitness hardware devices, up from 15 million this year. Mobile phones becoming more susceptible to spam calls

NumberCop (www.numbercop.com), a mobile security company dedicated to combating phone spam, has announced research findings that reveal the amount of spam calls arriving on mobile phones is increasing on a daily basis.

Research among NumberCop's phone-spam-index for 5,000 subscribers in four countries (US, CA, UK, AU) from January to July 2013 shows that the most prevalent form of reported phone spam are sales agent-based spam calls (43%), spam text messages (11%) and automated robocalls (9%). Phishing calls seeking personal or financial details and other fraudulent calls, such as phone scams, have risen to 27%, an increase of 170% compared  to 2008 when NumberCop's phone spam tracking started.

Over 40% of U.S. broadband households subscribe to an...

Park Associates (www.parksassociates.com) has announced results of a 2013 survey of 10,000 U.S. broadband households, which shows 44% currently have a subscription to some kind of online video service, such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, or Amazon. Younger consumers are more likely to subscribe to OTT (over-the-top) video services, and 8% of consumers 18-24 have never subscribed to a pay-TV service.

"Consumers have a variety of viewing options now thanks to OTT content, which is dismantling the traditional TV business models," said Heather Way, Senior Analyst, Parks Associates. "Online video is now a common source of video viewing in U.S. households, while transactional VOD (TVOD) is near the bottom. According to a new research report by Berg Insight (www.berginsight.com), telecom operators had deployed more than seven million carrier-grade Wi-Fi access points worldwide at the end of 2012. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.5%, the installed base is forecasted to reach 15 million units by 2018.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 46.2 percent, the installed base is forecasted to reach 40 million units by 2018.

SquareTrade (www.squaretrade.com), which offers a protection plan for electronic gadgets, says that a new study has found that that more than 50% of American parents say their kids have damaged a mobile phone, laptop, tablet or other portable device, costing parents more than US$2.8 billion in repairs and replacements.

"Just like their parents, kids use devices for an increasing number of things – from games and videos to research and homework. Our research shows that this increased usage also means that devices are more at risk than ever before, and we expect this trend to continue," says Ty Shay, CMO of SquareTrade. Emerging markets opt for smart TVs at greater rate...

According to the NPD DisplaySearch "Quarterly Smart TV Usage Study" (http://tinyurl.com/n7476y8), consumers in emerging markets are twice as likely as those in mature markets to purchase an internet-enabled smart TV in the coming 12 months. When asked about their planned TV purchases, 71% of consumers in Brazil, China, and other emerging markets reported they were likely to purchase a smart TV in the next 12 months, compared to just 37% of TV consumers in France, the UK, and other mature markets.

Nearly all Americans spammed with malware and viruses

Halon (www.halonsecurity.com) -- which specializes in email security, routers, and load balancers -- has announced the results of its U.S. survey," Email Spam and Related User Behavior," Conducted by market research group TNS Global, the survey discovered that 94.7% of Americans received at least one email containing a virus, spyware, or malware. 

About one in eleven (8.8%) opened the attachment and infected their computer. Almost a third (30.2%) came dangerously close to doing the same, opening the email but stopping short of opening the attachment. These spam emails bogusly claim to come most often from banking institutions (15.9%), social media sites like Facebook or Twitter (15.2%), and online payment services (12.8%).

The digital rights management (DRM) market will grow at a rate of 12% annually to become a $1.2 billion market by 2018, while the related conditional access (CAS) market will decline slightly to dip below $1.5 billion annually, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).

Cloud security reaches tipping point

Fifty-six percent of developers actively developing in the Cloud now say they are very confident about the security of their company's current cloud software development process, a forty-four percent increase from 39% a year ago who said they were very confident -- a number that was up from 36% in spring of 2011.

Additionally, 38% were somewhat satisfied according to the latest Evans Data Cloud Development Survey (www.evansdata.com), a survey of over 450 software Cloud developers conducted in July 2013. 51% of developers say lack of time the main reason for...

SOASTA, which specializes in cloud and mobile testing, has announced the findings of a series of surveys questioning American adults about their concerns when buying mobile apps, and the issues developers face with testing apps before they are released. 

Harris Interactive conducted an online survey on behalf of SOASTA among 3,130 American adults ages 18+ (the consumer study), while uSamp polled 1,309 information technology specialists and mobile app developers (the developer study). Both surveys occurred in July, 2013. SOASTA commissioned the research due to its position as the leading provider of cloud and mobile testing solutions for leading brands.

The results of the consumer study show that 77% of consumers who purchase mobile apps have concerns that would prevent them from buying a mobile app, while it appears that developers are not doing enough to ensure a high quality user experience for their apps that reach the market.

Storage market sees continued recovery


The worldwide personal and entry-level storage (PELS) market grew 10.7% year over year with 16.8 million units shipped in the second quarter of 2013 (2Q13), according to the International Data Corp. (IDC).

Shipment value experienced growth of 7.3% year over year to US$1.5 billion. This is the third consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth in worldwide shipment value.

"The second quarter of 2013 brought continued shipment and revenue growth, as well as a return to normal for the personal and entry-level storage market," says Liz Conner, senior research analyst, Storage Systems. Government cloud market worth $18.48 billion by 2018

According to new data from Markets and Markets (www.marektsandmarkets.com), the government cloud market will be worth US$18.48 billion by 2018.

Government bodies -- such as federal, state and local agencies -- are adopting private and community clouds internally or in a group of departments. Juniper Research’s latest report has determined that in 2017, over US$75 billion will be spent on consumer apps. This will be largely as a result of the in-app purchase model gaining continued traction across many markets, and the impact of new monetisation models used by developers and storefronts.

Most consumers will delete emails they can't read...

Mobile email has become a "make or break" communication channel for marketers, according to the latest survey from Constant Contact (www.constantcontact.com) and research firm Chadwick Martin Bailey. The survey of 1,497 consumers found that 80% of smartphone owners say it's "extremely important" to be able to read emails on their mobile devices.

The study also exposed what could be unfortunate results for marketers who have not yet taken mobile email display into consideration: 75% said they are "highly likely" to delete an email if they can’t read it on their smartphone.

Airlines are missing a major opportunity to drive more ancillary revenue from business travelers, according to a recent survey of 902 business travelers by FlightView, the day-of-travel information company.

According to FlightView's survey, more than half of all business travelers would consider purchasing in-flight amenities and services if offers were pushed to their mobile devices before they boarded the plane. Specifically, business travelers would consider mobile, day-of-travel purchases of:

In-flight WiFi 65.3%

Seat with extra legroom 55.4%

Business- or first-class ticket upgrade 50.2%

Early boarding privileges 43.0%

However, in the last 12 months, only 45 percent of business travelers have actually purchased a seat upgrade or add-on (such as in-flight WiFi) using an airline's mobile website or app.

ABI Research’s Device Portal sales channel analysis reveals tough times are ahead for smartphone vendors, as the balance of power remains with Samsung/Android and Apple.

The smartphone market is entering a new, more mature stage in its growth, where execution rules over innovation and Samsung is dominating the sales channel with more than double the number devices on offer than any other vendor across the 13 markets and multiple online retailers studied, according to the research group (www.abiresearch.com).

Almost 600,000 base stations to be upgraded to LTE-A...

Yota launched the first LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network in Russia last October; however, with the first compatible handset, SK Telecom was the earliest to make the technology commercially available in June 2013.

Within two weeks, the South Korean operator has already claimed over 150,000 subscriptions, roughly 0.6% of its total. The United States will have at least four LTE-A networks in service by the end of this year as well. This fierce competition will see more than half of the LTE subscribers in North America using LTE-A by 2017, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).

Simply Measured says 98% of top brands now have a Facebook fan page, with 60% posting at least one time per day. However, the frequency of posts is much less effective in engaging fans than a brand’s content strategy.

Visual content is by far the primary driver for engagement on Facebook, with photos accounting for 95% of total engagement. Overall, photos posted by top brands average more than 9,400 engagements per post, while video posts average more than 2,500 engagements.

Over the past few months, Facebook has made significant changes to benefit brands and users, including redesigning its News Feed to improve how visual content is displayed, and introducing clickable hashtags that allow brands to provide additional context with their posts. IDC: worldwide semiconductor revenue will grow 6.9%...

Semiconductor revenue worldwide will see improved growth this year of 6.9% and reaching US$320 billion according to the mid-year 2013 update of the "Semiconductor Applications Forecaster" (SAF) from International Data Corporation (IDC).

The SAF also forecasts that semiconductor revenues will grow 2.9% year over year in 2014 to $329 billion and log a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2% from 2012-2017, reaching $366 billion in 2017, according to the research group (www.idc.com).

Annual shipments of 802.15.4-enabled devices are forecast to grow more than 5X from 2012 to 2018, with a CAGR [compound annual growth rate] of over 30%, reports ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com). Mobile devices invade the workplace of the tech savvy

The adoption of mobile devices for personal use is well documented but less is known about their use at work. An "IDG Global Solutions" (IGS) survey found a growing overlap between home and work use among participants in 43 countries.

Forty-one percent use their private smartphone for business while almost as many use a tablet (37%). Private/business tablet use ran as high as 59% in Asia Pacific and Latin America to 36% in North America and 29% in Western Europe. As for smartphones supported by an organization’s IT department, Asia Pacific and Latin America led the way followed by Eastern Europe and North America.
The 25,601 respondents to an online survey fielded from March to May 2013 said they rely heavily on both devices to read email (93%-94%) and download or use mobile apps (67%-71%). According to the "Quarterly Multi-Screen Usage Study" from NPD DisplaySearch (www.displaysearch.com), 88% of tablet PC owners and 82% of smartphone owners in 15 countries surveyed use their devices at least some of the time while they watch TV. Email, Web browsing, texting, Facebook, and weather were among the top applications accessed while watching TV.

"The rise in connected mobile devices has changed the way consumers view TV and online content," says Riddhi Patel, research director at NPD DisplaySearch. "For many people around the world, multi-tasking with apps on smartphones and tablets while watching TV has forever changed the traditional TV-focused viewing experience."

The worldwide IT outsourcing (ITO) market is forecast to reach US$288 billion in 2013, a 2.8% increase in U.S. dollars (and 5.1% in constant currency) from 2012, according to Gartner, Inc. According to new data from Research and Markets (www.researchandmarkets.com), the total value of the global mobile marketing and advertising market will grow from 3.8 billion in 2011 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 31% to 19.7 billion in 2017.

ABI Research (www.abirsearch.com) has found that the overall 2012 wireless network equipment market was quite challenging for infrastructure vendors, but the incessant demand for 3G and 4G mobile broadband will continue to drive demand for mobile packet core equipment.
